Gamenight: Phillies (25-22) At Nationals (20-27)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, May 21, 2008 06:27 PM

The Phillies will try to take the three-game set from the Nationals tonight at Nationals Park Jamie Moyer goes for the Phils, while subsitute starter Matt Chico pitches for the Nats. The lefty means the Phils will trot out the left-handed lineup, complete with Jayson Werth, Chris Coste and Pedro Feliz, all good against lefties. Ryan Howard, 1-for-8 against Chico, will start.

Chico has only notched six innings twice this year, and both starts were very early in the season. Lately, Chico had been throwing from the bullpen, but Shawn Hill was scratched from the start, moving Chico back into the rotation for this game. He’s been known to give up four-six runs per outing, so the Phils bats need to be ready. They’ve only scored one run in 18 innings against the Nats in this series.

I’d like to predict an offensive outpouring, but I can’t. It’s too uncertain. It would’ve been nice to see Jayson Werth slide into the three-hole with Utley, Burrell and Howard hitting four-six. Then put Coste in the seven with Feliz hitting eighth. That would’ve been nice, but Charlie Manuel likes sticking to his guns. Here’s hoping the guns work out tonight.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (3-3) 4.89 ERA
Nationals: Matt Chico (0-5) 6.07 ERA

Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 67 degrees, light rain
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Werth, Feliz, Coste, Moyer

Your gamenight beer: Let’s go with a local winner: Yuengling Black & Tan. Strong like a stout but smooth like a pilsner, it has the best of both worlds. Very hearty drink that you should have with some mini chessesteaks, like I will be doing tonight.

Go Phillies!

Tim, great pick with the beer. I live in pottsville so i have obviously my fair share of the yuengling famly. If i could make a suggestion, for a nice friday night game where hangover wont be too serious the next day, possibly one day you could post Lord Chesterfield ALe also of the Yuengling Family. 4 of these will make a fastball look like 12-6 curveball.

howard finally…. we could now say hes on his way back until he strikesout the next three times he comes up

  3. Mike T Says:

We’re going to need some runs - Moyer’s not going to be able to stop the flooding much longer.

  4. Mike T Says:

Nice work, Jamie! Experience over youth.

  5. erik Says:

great job victorino, he really seems to be coming around

  6. erik Says:

i think howard might have read tim’s letter.

  7. erik Says:

i do believe the offense is getting its wake up call…and i LOVE it

  8. Brian Michael Says:

    Ryan Howard responds!

  9. erik Says:

now is a great time for condrey and seanez

  10. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Thank YOU, Ryan.

  11. Mike W. Says:

Howard is still on pace for about 40 HR people, despite the 190 avg.

  12. Tim Malcolm Says:

The point is he needs to improve the average, but if he starts socking the ball like this, no more open letters.

  13. Geoff Says:

what was more encouraging than the homers to me was to see him shorten the one swing and go the other way with it. thats what made him a great hitter before was his ability to do that without warning. then the pitcher has no clue what to throw him

  14. Joe DiMaggio Says:

Hope you guys finally get off Moyer’s case as he has been and continues to be one of the most consistent performers on the mound for the Phillies.

This guy is a class guy who I am happy to see on the mound any night and a great stabilizing influence for the team.

  15. erik Says:

geoff i agree with that and i would like to add another point. i like the fact that he didnt strike out on an 0-2 count. instead he lined one over the fence. confidence is what i think is key for howard. tonight i think is going to be the spark that lights this team. look out here we come.

  16. Paul Bearer Says:

Doesn’t the world just seem right with Burrell’s average in the low .270s?

    WELCOME BACK PAT!

  17. Geoff Says:

small complaint: clay condrey is painful to watch….

good outing by howard tonight. he REALLY needed something like this. badly needed it.

  18. Greg V. Says:

Great game tonight and definately something I think a lot of us felt like we needed to see. Where the bats have been dead the past few games, they came alive here (with the unfortunate exception of Mr. Burrell). Howard’s home runs tonight had some extra bash in them which made them really exciting to see. Moyer pitched like a true veteran tonight. Watching him get out of the jams he was in was truly a lesson that Eaton could stand to learn. Even Condrey looked alright, even though he shattered the shut out, he still pitched 3 half decent innings. Where the past few days I have been rather frustrated, this was a great game all around!

  19. Tim Malcolm Says:

I think tomorrow I’ll write an open letter to Mr. Burrell.

  20. Fran Says:

Tonight was the best thing that could happen to the phils this season

  21. chris m Says:

well lets not get to excited with howard hes 3 for the past 12

  22. Geoff Says:

Yeah. If they lost tonight it would be serious panic time because the washington nationals still suck. this is what i expect from the phillies when they play teams that suck. total domination. just like theyre supposed to. yes.

i want to see them knock around someone like oswalt now, that will make me feel a LOT better. i still need more pitching, but i think i can lay off that for like a day. hopefully, providing gillick doesnt make another asinine statement.

  23. Lewisauce Says:

Mike T. posted a compliment. A compliment of Jamie Moyer.

The end may be nigh …
