No Rhyme Or Reason For Outfield Shuffle

Last night Charlie Manuel started Jayson Werth in center field and Shane Victorino in right field. It was going fine until the ninth inning, when Werth misplayed a fly ball by Brian McCann for a double. One run scored. Though the Phils hung on to win, the play could’ve cost them the game.
Manuel’s reason for putting Werth in center field was merely that he wanted to:
“I want Werth to play center field every now and then. I said before that Werth will play some in center field. I said it in the winter. I said it in the spring. I said it right before Victorino came back [from the disabled list]. That way, we’ve got two guys. If you notice during the season, I usually give [Victorino] a rest. I give him a blow every now and then. And when I give him a rest, Werth will be the guy to go to center field.”
Yeah, Charlie, when you give Vic a rest. But last night Vic was starting. Victorino has a better arm, more range and is quicker than Werth. There was no reason not to start Vic in center field if both were playing. If Victorino is on the bench, that’s fine, but if there’s anything Shane has done well this season it’s play his position. He needs to be out there in center field if he’s playing.
If there’s any reason the team is hiding it could be they want to expose Werth as trade bait who can play all outfield positions. But that’s a fairly ridiculous thought.

I totally agree with you. If Manuel wants a better read on Werth’s capability in CF, do it only when resting Victorino. Besides, Werth has not yet shown he can be a regular in the line-up; not when you’re hitting .230 against lefties. I like to see Jenkins have more opportunity to play. Platoon Jenkins (vs righties) with Werth in RF.

I agree that defensively Werth probably doesn’t bring a whole hell of a lot to the table. I’ve watched that tall feller allow a homerun just squeak over the centerfield wall with out even an attempt at reaching over for it…specifically in Colorado. That being said, I also watched the WWE’s EDGE doppelganger come up and hit a homerun to erase his mistake in his very next at bat.
Hindsight being what it is, I’ll still take a 5-4 victory with Werth’s 4 RBIs in exchange for the solitary run Lidge now has against his ERA as opposed to a 4-1 loss because Victorio makes that play with Jenkins standing to his left.

Yeah. Lidge actually walked somebody too, which i cant remember him doing that often this year. i think they were pitching around the guy though so it was semi-intentional.

If I had to move any of the outfielders via trade I would rather see Taguchi packaged not Werth - he is a great insurance if the Phils do not sign Burrell.
Last night was a great win because the Phils proved that they can win without a home run! Also Howard got a huge 2 out hit with a runner on third - a situation that he k’ed in earlier in the game.
Tonight is a huge game for Myers - Eaton’s last start was billed as D-day on this site and I think that start is getting close for Myers.

how much longer can we really afford to give myers before he gets consistent?
dude, what team in their right mind will give you anything for taguchi? nobody will even want him thrown into a trade (or id be surprised at least). he has to be released or DFA’d/claimed on waivers in order for him to go anywhere.
werth isnt going anywhere. not unless they want to bring up golson or some outfielder and include werth in a trade for a number 2 starter. even then, though, i still would rather not trade werth. find some other guy to trade.

i completely agree with werth in center and shane in right. shane has an absolute cannon of an arm that is much more valuable in right field than it is in center seeing as how there are way more opportunities for outfield assists from right than there are from center. I also said before that i think they should play werth in center and have him shade over towards left to help out burrell the way gary maddox used to do to help out the bull. they

Agree that Victorino is better in center—but it can’t hurt to give Werth some playing time there if only to keep him sharp and also to increase his overall value as a player. Also Werth has definite defensive value in both right and center. His height helps make up (somewhat) for less speed compared to Victorino.
In the right deal no Phillies outfielder is untouchable with regards to trading (in fact the only untouchables on the whole team are Utley and Hamels)
If Werth stays healthy and plays as well as he has—he basically will have gotten his career back on track as a legit starting major league outfielder. I’d say keep him—cause he prob will be cheap for a while.

Might want to add Rollins to that untouchables list… he did win the MVP and carry our team to the playoffs last year…
Werth in center is fine… but one of Victorino’s most valuable assests is his arm… someone made a great point about how many more chances you get for assists, or to stop a runner going 1st-to-3rd on you when you have Victorino in RF… Werth isn’t Rowand…or Victorino… but he’s a very good player.. a great addition to this team, and I think he’s getting the correct amount of playing time right now… If Jenkins wants more starts, he needs to get his bat going and make it impossible to sit him…

Ryan, you’re right about Victorino in right. His arm is great, and that’s what you need in right field. Werth if more than adequate in center.

I like Werth on the team because hes that guy that the GM always brings someone in to replace every season but every season he finds a way to keep getting good PT. theres one of those guys on every team.

Last nights 9th inning misplay aside, Werth should be playing every night in CF and Victorino should be playing every night in RF. Jenkins would be the #1 bat off the bench and play once a week.
That lineup gives them the best chance to win, especially with their starting pitching woes.

If Myers doesn’t get a W tonight, throwing at least 7 - he’s done, and I will be bashing him, along with Ryan Howard, the rest of the season.
May 14th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
honestly, why all the bash talk all the time. i am a true and true philadelphia sports fan(was sitting in the stadium for 4 consecutive eagles nfc championship games, 3 losses, 1 win) and the only thing i dont like about philly fans is the constant bashing on our own players. has anyone ever got the fucking idea to support our guys a little bit. players have cold streaks, it happens. if we were losing right now i could understand this a little more, but for gods sake we are a game and a half back from first. how often do you remember that in the last 15 years. maybe a little positive reinforcement from the fans would make the players just a little bit more hungry to play harder and better for them.(you dont think mcnabb doesnt get sick of his hometown constantly on his case and that this does not affect his performance) to say you are going to bash someone for the rest of the season is immature and asinine. and i gaurantee by the end of the year you will be singing praises for both howard and myers.

Are you freakin’ kidding me? Howard, maybe. Sluggers slump, and if he picks it up come July, fine. But Myers? Unless he goes on a tear of 10-straight quality starts, there’s no way in hell I’m singing his praises.
The team has tried everything with this guy. They made him the opening day starter. Gave him a huge contract. Stuck with him through his personal problems.
But he’s still an immature child. That stunt on Kendrick in spring training? Well, who the hell would you rather trade to Japan now? The guy with five quality starts (Kendrick), or the guy with, what, one? And the part about all that that really cemented Myers in my mind as a pissant frat boy was his punch line of the joke: “You’ve been PUNK’D!” he told Kendrick. Punk’d? Ashton Kucher? Are you fuckin’ kidding me? Responsible adults don’t even know who Ashton Kucher is, let alone imitate him. High-paid team leaders on World Series contenders don’t act like drunk fraternity boys.
Myers is supposed to be our ace, one of our team leaders. He couldn’t lead or pitch his way out of Lakewood right now. He’s consistently demonstrated that he has an $8 million arm and a 10-cent head (i.e. doesn’t have two brain cells to rub together). He’s stinking it up as I type this — against the Braves, a team we MUST consistently beat.
I’ll give him respect when he grows up, but not a minute sooner.

Great play tonight by Werth in CF. However I hope victorino gets the start in CF tomorrow.

Sorry—Rollins as valuable as he is to the team—is not untouchable in my book. He’s already had his peak years. If they got the right package (and only if) I would consider it. Look they already proved they can win over the short term without Rollins—they have a leadoff (Victorino) and 2 hole guy (Werth) to fill in at the top of the order.
This is relevant just because Werth has emerged as a probable everyday type player. Also I will emphasize that a trade only makes sense if you get value and improve weaknesses that the team has.
