20 Part II: Phils Demolish Cardinals

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, June 14, 2008 09:54 AM

The Phillies thoroughly pounded the Cardinals, 20-2. It was the second time this season the Phils scored 20 in a game; between 1957 and 2007 the Phils scored 20 runs just three times.

Yes, this team can be incredible.

Ryan Howard hit two home runs (now 17) and drove in five — his first homer was part of a back-to-back-to-back run with Chase Utley (ML-leading 22) and Pat Burrell (17) in the first inning. Those were all the runs the Phils needed. But they poured it on. In the fourth inning the Phils brought 15 to the plate, scoring nine runs. Kyle Kendrick had two hits in the inning, a double and an RBI single. The last Phillie pitcher to get two hits in an inning? Omar Daal in 2001.

Kendrick also pitched very well, going seven innings and giving up merely two runs on eight hits. Rudy Seanez and Clay Condrey mopped up.

Carlos Ruiz had a career day with four hits (two doubles) and four RBI. Shane Victorino went 3-for-7; Pedro Feliz went 3-for-5. The hits were plentiful and the runs came thusly. The Cardinals got a little bitter at the end, hitting Howard to bring forth an ejection, so it’s possible these teams will mix it up today or tomorrow. And they brought Aaron Miles in to pitch, giving him a standing ovation for getting the Phils 1-2-3. (Honestly, is there anything more annoying than these uber-positive Cards fans?) Regardless, the Phils set an early tone to this series. Howard was spectacular back at home and the rest of the team followed suit. And a 20-run game is a good way to wipe off a 1-2 series against the Marlins.

  1. Phil Says:

The best part about this is that they did it to the team with the 2nd best record in the NL(tied with themselves of course.) When it happened against the Rockies I was just thinking, wow the Rockies really blow this year, but when they did it to the Cards, I was like, wow the Phillies offense has so much potential.

  2. Bill Says:

I am amazed how the Phillies succeed against these so called best teams in the division in the central. To me the Cubs and Cards records are so good because they face the Pirates and Reds while we face the Mets and Braves. I really think the Phils are better than both the Cards and Cubs.

  3. Greg V. Says:

Best part about this game was that the whole team played a role!

  4. Bruce Says:

“…these uber-positive Cards fans… says Tim? Geez, lighten up a little. The fans were sitting on their hands with built up frustration all night as they watched the ridiculous 20-2 bashing their team received. Finally they were able to release some of that frustration by cheering a positonal player on the mound who retired all three hitters without further ado and which in turn mocked their team’s pitching inepititude.

  5. Phil Says:

I’m surprised the stands weren’t cleared by the 5th inning.

  6. erik Says:

The Phillies are 41-28. That is 69 games. 81 games is half a season. With 12 games until the half way mark being played at their .594 winning percentage, that would be an additional 7 wins. That puts them at 48 wins halfway through their games. That would be a 96 win season. Could Jimmy be right again?

  7. Sam Says:

If the phils were losing 20-2 and chase utley pitched a 1-2-3 inning, we would go ballistic.

  8. Mike W. Says:

well, another complete horseshit blackout on the game today, where the Red Sox- Reds is being shown on fox, and MLB.tv is blacked out b/c we are technically a fox game. This needs to be fixed.

  9. Phil Says:

Wait, so we can’t watch the Phillies game on fox?

  10. chris m Says:

BRUCE, howards rbi numbers are bc rollins utley and victorino. you say thats what table setters are for? then why doesnt everyones cleanup hitter have more rbi’s then howard bc all their averages are better? bc we have the BEST table setters and thats the reason a .212 hitter has so many rbi’s. my piont rested.

  11. Mike T. Says:

No, Jimmy will not be right again. We’ll win 90, 92 games – still solid.

  12. Phil Says:

What channel is the game on if it’s not on Fox?!?1?1?

  13. scot Says:

Chris, you seem to rest pretty easily.

Rollins OBP is 340, Vic, 350, and Utley 404.

Let’s look at the Mets. Reyes 350, Castillo 347, Wright 366.

Not a huge differential. By your standards, the Mets shouldn’t still be searching for a cleanup guy to come close to Howard’s RBI output, but they are.

The reason of course being that Howards numbers improve with RISP. And of course the fact that he isn’t as shit as you are trying to make him out to be.

  14. Phil Says:

Scot actually just made a convincing argument. I still think Pat the Bat should be clean up though. Look at his numbers with RISP. also he has 42 RBI’s would be way higher if he was batting 4th.

  15. chris m Says:

scot remember werth was there and bruntlett…rollins hasnt slumped till lately. i never once said he was shit but he is playing like shit. i just find it funny that you guys are saying hes on his way back after 1 game. thats the only thing im arguing is that you need to see more than 1 game to officially call someone back after hes fooled us numerous times this season.

  16. scot Says:

Werth and Bruntlett being there in Rollins abscence only makes Howards rbi totals more impressive.

I’m not saying he’s on his way back at all. I’m just saying he’s not playing as terribly as people here want to make it out to be. You want to focus on his poor stats being the k’s and batting average, thats fine. But look at the whole picture and realize he’s still on pace for over 40 home runs and well over 100 rbis. I just don’t see the point in burying the guy (especially a potent run producer), or anyone on the team after a 20-2 win with, “Yeah, but’s!!!!” It’s just silly to me.

  17. dan Says:

burrel shouldnt bat cleanup because hed get so many rbis that utley wouldn’t have a shot at the triple crown

  18. chris m Says:

ya bring up my quote of me burying the guy scot bc you wont find it. its unbelievable how complacant some of you are. i hope the phillies arent bc we’ll bow out of the playoffs in 3 games agian. the guys batting .212 but hes not doing all that bad. ha. he’ll tell you hes not having a good year himself. burell was producing last year and 2 years ago with a .240 avg and he was getting buried by the same guys defending howard. dont understand

  19. chris m Says:

and bruntlet was playing better then jroll has been in this slump once he got going so not more impressive

  20. chris m Says:

dan i like your piont. but he wont get the avg part bc chipper will have it bc hell play just enough to be eligible for avg part. what a little pusssy he is

  21. Tim Malcolm Says:

It’s a blackout for we out-of-area fans. BOOO.

And Bruce, I know I’m berating a bit about them, but do they know the word “boo”? They don’t get angry when their team loses 20-2, but they cheer Aaron Miles. Come on. I bet those cheers were “good job” cheers. Maybe I’m still bitter because of the “Baseball Heaven” comments.

  22. Tim Malcolm Says:

So since I can’t watch the game, I’m sitting on a porch overlooking the beautiful Long Island Sound. A little iced tea, a laptop and a nice breeze on a warm day. Ahhh.

  23. chris m Says:

i love seeing aaron do that last nite. the only pitcher not to let the phillies score

  24. Mark Says:

There is DEFINITELY something special about this team. Tim Malcolm concurs with the thought that I have; that not in my 60 years on this earth and my 50 years as a cognizant Phillies fan, have I seen a Phillies team score 20 runs twice in a season, let alone twice in 17 days. Everyone recalls that they pulverized the Rockies and then went on a 45 run 3 game spree sweeping the Rox. Hopefully, they haven’t burned out the offense this time and that we see another Phillies sweep. 43-28 would look awfully good headed home to play the Red Sox.

  25. scot Says:

Is it okay to point out that Howard is actually leading the NL in RBI’s over the last 30 days with 33. And that’s with Utley being right behind him, often clearing the bases with with 31 RBI’s.

My point of view on Howard is we pay him to be a run producer, not a triple crown threat. He’s never gonna hit 300 again. The league has adjusted to him in that regard. He’s a .260 – 280 hitter tops. So he’s got a ways to go to get there. But as far as the run production, to have only his teamate, and two other players in league ahead of him. THAT’s what we pay him to do.

  26. Phil Says:

Utley wouldn’t win the triple crown or even 1/3 of it. I mean that by no disrespect. Utley is arguably the best player in baseball right now. Howard will have the most RBI’s and homers. I know how much we all hate him, but those are the breaks. Chipper will have the highest average.

  27. chris m Says:

good stat scot….its only been srcolling on the bottom of espn ALL DAY. ya we pay him to hit .212…..stats are fun when there unique and original….not when theve been scrolling on espn ALL DAY

  28. scot Says:

okay, chris, thats a unique perspective. i didn’t know that facts were so offensive to you. my bad!

i’ll take away the RBI stats if you take away the batting average. in the pursuit of originality, i guess. deal? i mean you’ve harped on that more days straight than espn has the rbi’s.
