Benson To Start Sunday For IronPigs
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, June 27, 2008 10:46 AM
Yesterday it was reported Kris Benson has been promoted to AAA Lehigh Valley after a successful start in Clearwater.
Benson will start for the IronPigs Sunday against Syracuse.
I’d think if Benson excels in two to three starts he could see his way on the big league roster. My blind guess is July 11 against Arizona or July 18, the first game back from the All-Star break, in Florida. He’s lined up with Jamie Moyer, so don’t look for Benson to immediately be pushed into the rotation upon hopeful arrival.
It’s nice to have Benson as a possible contingency plan. Of course the Phils will still need that elusive No. 2 starter. But Benson could provide a boost to the back end (though we can’t really say Eaton, Kendrick and Moyer have been bad). Really, this is the best kind of rehab news you could have.

Can never have too many live arms. But as you say, this is not the solution to the rotation. The No.2 must be found.
June 27th, 2008 at 11:03 am
I know you guys are frustrated, and believe me, so are the owners. We promise to do everything in our power to improve this club and keep revenues high. If that means signing Jared Washburn, Freddy Garcia, Kevin Millwood, John Lieber or Jose Mesa, then that’s what we’ll do. As long as it falls within the parameters of our small-market budget, we won’t hesitate to pull the trigger.
Hope to see you all at the home games!
(p.s. Please lay off So Taguchi and Jeff Jenkins. If they’re doing poorly now, imagine how much worse they’ll be if their feelings get hurt.)

Exactly right. He can come in, maybe be the long man in the pen to start out. Then WHEN eaton or moyer need a break you can let him start and go from there. kendrick wont be getting replaced anytime soon or at all. If you go get a number two starter myers would probably be part of the deal, but oh well. with the number 2 starter in the rotation, benson ready to come in after the all star break, and some young arms called up to mix things up if need be, then youve really started to begin hoarding pitching. which is what i like to see.

Latest team report on Benson:
“…Benson, who was 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in two starts for Class A Clearwater, will face Syracuse in his third minor league start. It’s still too early to predict when he may be ready to pitch in the majors. Benson’s fastball velocity was clocked at 88-89 mph Tuesday night when he allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings for Clearwater.”
I don’t share the optimism expressed here by a few. Even if Benson can slightly improve his velocity during his rehab, I don’t see him as a upgrade over anyone in the Phillies’ current rotation or the league leading low ERA bullpen. If you’re just adding him as an insurance against a possible injury to another pitcher, then who goes off the 25 man roster? Best bet for Benson’s call-up is September 1st when the active roster expands to 40.

I have a feeling that The Phils are waiting to see how benson does before they make a trade. That seems like something they’d do. Try and go with a cheaper “bandaid”. Why else would they bump his ass to AAA after he’s struggled in A ball. I dont see benson going to the pen….too much ego and too delicate.
