Eaton’s Quote: No Biggie Or Black Eye?
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, June 04, 2008 10:45 AM
After 6.1 innings of fine work and a standing ovation from the fans, Adam Eaton went to the clubhouse where Tom McCarthy interviewed him. What seemed like your run-of-the-mill “good start” interview took a turn at the very end.
Jimmy Rollins had doubled to put runners at second and third with nobody out. McCarthy told Eaton about this new development.
McCarthy: “So Phils coming on now.â€
Eaton: “Makes sense. I’m out of the game.”
Then he grinned right into the camera.
I’m very steamed about this quote by Eaton. Yes, Eaton has the worst run support of any Phillie starter (3.89), but that’s no reason to make a jab at your offense during a TV interview. What’s worse is Eaton had just come off an ovation from the fans — finally Eaton had pitched well enough for us to accept him as one of our own. And what does he do? Open his big mouth.
Last year Eaton got 4.87 run support, yet crapped it away with a 6.29 ERA. Don’t talk, Adam. Pay your dues before the offense shuts down on you on purpose. Now, maybe I’m alone in feeling this heated, but there’s just something not right about Eaton saying this.

I’m thinking he was trying to make a funny.
Maybe if it becomes a controversy, the Phils will stop in-game interviews, which wouldn’t bother me much as it’s always nice to follow the game instead of a talking head.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:59 am
Nope not alone at all. He was the worst starting pitcher in all of the majors last year and still ended up with 10 Wins. I watched this interview 2 or 3 times to make sure I heard what he said and how he said it correctly and each time it pissed me off more and more. He clearly wasn’t joking around in any way when he said it, instead he sounded and looked bitter that the offense wasn’t supporting him as much as others. He just got an ovation from the fans, his team is looking to continue their dominance and they just put 2 runners in scoring position with no outs – he should be thrilled. Instead, he came off as a selfish prick who only seems to care about his own run support. Totally inappropriate.

Braves and John Smoltz have an 11:30 news conference. Smoltz needs season-ending shoulder surgery. Could be a retirement announcement in there too. We’ll have more when it’s official.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:00 am
eh, lame joke attempt that didn’t fly so well and he comes off arrogant…
At most it deserves a behind doors apology to his teammates. At least…forget about it.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:03 am
I understand your frustration and, personally, I’m a big fan of the whole “If you’re not that good, then don’t talk crap” school of thought. But I get the sense that Eaton’s well-liked in the clubhouse (it’s anecdotal evidence, but he does always seem to be one of the first ones out there for a walkoff), and he’s generally been forthcoming in his time here (he plain and simply said “If I was doing my job, we’d be in first place” at one point last year).
Basically, I’m saying that I think his rapport with the other guys is good enough that he can say this and everyone knows he’s kidding. Still, you’re right in that he would have been better off just not saying anything.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Yea, as a fan it pissed me off because he didn’t appear to be joking and he has no reason to say it. But on the other hand, his teammates know him best and maybe they understand this is his type of humor and they take it with a grain of salt. If not, and there’s some pissed off people on the offense, its in his/our best interests if he makes that behind doors apology.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Well it could very well have been a joke, and I’m sure Eaton has good rapport with the guys, but it still doesn’t sit well. I mean, this is a guy who has excuse after excuse with every poor start, and NOW he’s saying something like this?
June 4th, 2008 at 11:10 am
He said it with a big grin. He was joking. The Phillies seem like the kind of team to have a sense of humor. Myers with that prank on Kendrick was way worse than this. haha
June 4th, 2008 at 11:11 am
I think it’s pretty funny. Does no one else make wisecracks about their friends and co-workers? If we didn’t do that at my job, we’d basically have nothing to talk to each other about.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:27 am
eh, i think that was pretty harmless. pure gallows humor.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:37 am
I agree that it was a poor attempt at a joke. I wouldn’t worry about it and I don’t think his comment will affect the team at all. If Eaton keeps pitching like this the rest of the season, he can say whatever the hell he wants to.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:42 am
I think you are letting your dislike of Eaton show. He’s done a good job this year. I thought he was just busting on his teammates and enjoying the moment.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:44 am
jburd: I dislike no Phillie. If Eaton continues to pitch as well as he did yesterday, he’s one of my favorites. I just found the quote very inappropriate.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:47 am
That’s all it is really, everyone is an Eaton hater. They can’t get last years season out of their minds. He was hurt last year, but this year Eaton’s leading the team in quality starts. Not saying he’s our ace or anything, but in all honesty, he’s our 2nd or 3rd best starter right now. That’s actually really sad and it shows how much we need to get another 1 or 2 pitcher.
June 4th, 2008 at 11:57 am
Don’t take it so seriously Tim. I agree with Phil and Jeffrey that it’s a “locker room” joke. Obviously, his team mates know him better than us and understand that kind of humor. It was a spontaneous and euphoric moment of feeling good about his performance that allowed him to toss off a harmless joke.
My complaint is why Tom McCarthy allowed to do a interview DURING a inning when the Phillies are mounting a threat with consecutive hits. It’s a HUGH distraction; at least for me. I have seen WAY TOO much of this with McCarthy all over the place providing anedotes/stories/interviews that are NOT directly related to game situations at hand. I want to stay focus on every pitch of the game. Period.
June 4th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Here’s a link that I just saw that writes about the Phillies signing of Larry Bowa… thought I would share
http://www.cardboardgods.com/LarryBowa-1975.html
June 4th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
I think he was just making a joke. I mean, how could a pitcher in his right mind actually chastise his teammates for run support? Does anyone possibly believe that an offensive crew tries less hard for runs because a given pitcher is on the mound?
What Eaton said was the baseball equivalent of “Of course it’s going to rain this weekend. I’m going to the beach!”
June 4th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
I thought it was hilarious. Here is a guy that is leading the team in quality starts this year, and walked into the game with a 1-3 record and still was routinely crucified by the fans and media.
Last year when he was terrible, he never ran from the press or camera and took full responsibilty for his failings. He made a joke, when he had the lead and was already in line for a win.
Not a big deal at all, and in fact I think it shows the looseness of the clubhouse, and the comfort Eaton has with the guys in the clubhouse. Let’s not be Mets fans and look for subtext in everything. Let’s enjoy this good run that the team and Eaton is on, and hope it continues.
June 4th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Good to see most of you guys think it was a joke.
June 4th, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Eh, I’m not too worried about it – no biggie.
June 4th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
screw eaton…i celebrated my 21st last nite and i dont remember how it got there but my dinner was laying next to my bed when i woke up and the caroet cleaners are here rite now
June 4th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Not a big deal.
Heres my big thing though: its ok to be critical as I am, even harsh at times, during the season and stuff. But once the playoff rosters are set and the playoffs begin, I really dont like to get all negative until after its all over win or lose. Thats really annoying. It annoyed me when people got that way with the flyers. If you listened to some of those people, they said theyd lose like every game. thats so annoying and childish.
once the playoffs start ill be behind them completely because i know that the players are who they are and theres nothing that can be done. regardless of all the shortcomings they have, of which there are certantly some holes to fill here, once they get there then i expect them to win and will approach the situation as such.
June 4th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
but thats sort of my playoff rooting philosophy to throw out there
June 4th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Not a big deal to me, but I hate the in game interview in general. How many times this year has Tom McCarthy been interviewing some random doofus or giving a report when something big happens in the game. Then he steps all over it and Harry is left to either give a late call or describe what already was described.
It’s a disgrace what the organization is doing to Harry. Look at other broadcasts like I do every night on the extra innings package and you’ll get a better sense of how poorly he is treated.
June 4th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
i’m fine with it. this is a loose bunch in the clubhouse.
and harry is treated like shit by this management. he should be allowed to call the shots and do whatever the fuck he wants. he’s a legend. he should have joe paterno – like powers with this organization.
June 4th, 2008 at 4:35 pm
I thought McCarthey thanked Eaton for doing the interview when I heard it. Then Eaton said what he said…I guess I should stop doing dishes during the late innings.
June 4th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Rosco, make your wife do the dishes. And if she doesn’t, just slap her around a little. She’ll get the hint!!!
June 4th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
I’m the reason that Adam Eaton’s win-loss record sucks.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
No, Adam Eaton’s been getting no run support in his well pitched games.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
As much as I appreciate the sackriders on this thread wanting to give me the Cy Young for a 4.63 era, you don’t have to cheer me up. I was paid $265,000 to pitch last nights game.
June 4th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Wow, a 4.63 ERA…it’s 2nd best on the team.
