Gameday: Angels (45-30) At Phillies (42-34)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, June 22, 2008 12:33 PM

No game recap today; it’s pretty self-explanatory.

The Phillies are now in the midst of a four-game losing streak, and they’re losing their grip on the NL East lead, now just one game ahead of the Florida Marlins. Today proves to be a huge day, with Cole Hamels on the hill to try and put a stop to this — and this is probably not the appropriate word — mess.

Hamels is coming off a fine performance against the Red Sox, which was the last Phils win. He pitched seven innings and gave up two runs, back-to-back homers by Dustin Pedroia and JD Drew. The Phils offense will face Jered Weaver, who stormed out of the gates with an amazing second half in 2006, but since has been roughed up a lot more. The Mets pounced on him Monday night.

The Phils are just 10-13 in day games this season. Hamels, as we all know, can put on a scary face when he’s pitching with the sun out. But this season he’s been pretty good in day games (2-0, 3.81 ERA). Whatever the case, the Phils need a big performance by the ace today.

Chase Utley is back in the starting lineup. And Charlie Manuel is shaking things up, putting Greg Dobbs in the 2-hole and Shane Victorino in the 6-hole.

Phillies: Cole Hamels (7-4) 3.23 ERA
Angels: Jered Weaver (6-7) 4.73 ERA

Gametime: 1:35 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, possible thunderstorms
Lineup: Rollins, Dobbs, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Victorino, Jenkins, Ruiz, Hamels

Your gameday beer: Today it’s Rapscallion Premier. Rapscallion means one who is mischievous or playful, and the word “scally” is derived from it (so is “scallion”). I’m a fan of the term “scally wag,” which I guess means someone who is playful to the extent of being a problem. And they’re only found on pirate ships. You never hear of a scally wag out in public. That’s kind of sad. While drinking, eat a light sandwich — maybe turkey and sprouts on whole wheat. Hey, we’re healthy here sometimes.

Go Phillies!

    Bat hamels 8th

  2. Phil Says:

I agree…Hamels is a better hitter than Ruiz.

  3. Tim Malcolm Says:

Vic is hitting sixth. Dobbs second. Interesting.

  4. Phil Says:

    Why?

  5. Tim Malcolm Says:

    I got no idea.

  6. Mike T. Says:

Giving Cole a lead after 1 inning would be huge – a great way to get out of this funk.

  7. Tim Malcolm Says:

Story of the homestand: Utley, Howard and Burrell all fail with RISP.

  8. joe l Says:

Hey, I live next to Concord, MA (once home of the said Concord Brewery). Is Rapscallion the one that has a kind of bubble gum taste?

  9. Greg V. Says:

And the hits just keep on coming! I’m turning this one off.

  10. Greg V. Says:

Victorino on base for Jenkins, Ruiz, and Hamels? 4 runs easily this inning!

  11. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

wrong guy got moved down to the six spot

  12. Tim Malcolm Says:

I think T-Mac loves saying “cyclical.”

  13. Geoff Says:

hamels is the only guy that gave vlad the chin music. thats what i expect to see done to him. scare him off the plate a little. then blow up the bat next time out.

its good to see utley get out of the slump. i think theyll win this game if they can get to the bullpen.

however these two series should set to rest the argument that the phillies have to go load up at the deadline to even be able to compete with those two teams. on top of that, in the offseason they have to spare no expense and boost payroll to stack this team as best they can. you just cant expect to win if you dont attract elite players.

elite players want long contracts and big money. if you dont buckle down and accept that reality, and stop trying to nickel and dime your way out of that, then youll never win anything.

the general manager just is not good enough to work with this payroll.

ruben amaro also isnt good enough to do that.

so, there are three options in the future.

    1) boost payroll to cover up for amaro’s inadequacies.

    2) hire someone REALLY good. someone who knows wtf they are doing. billy beane definitely does but hes not going anywhere. someone like him. he can work within a budget and build good teams while maximizing talent and balancing “cap”space.

    3) combine steps 1 and 2 but leave amaro out of it. grow a set of balls and try to make your business succeed by taking calculated risks

  14. Tim Malcolm Says:

Manuel is really wasting Vic with the Jenkins/Ruiz black hole.

  15. Geoff Says:

anyway, ill enjoy the ride this season and well see what happens. ill continue demanding action when i feel it is necessary. but this should all be clear as day now. we know what we need to do to get to where the angels and the red sox are. spend money in the offseason (you have to) and make good moves in season.

the guys that are here simply need to improve their play and do it consistently.

i hope they can get to weaver today. thats the minimum i expect here for the rest of this game

  16. Greg V. Says:

Is anyone else sick to these stupid segments T Mac puts into the middle of the game WHILE A DOUBLE PLAY JUST HAPPEND? CALL THE FUCKING GAME!

  17. Phil Says:

Noone cares about Sarge’s family album or the fact that T-Mac likes everyone loves Raymond. Who hires these guys? Sarge is good when he’s not talking about how great his son is and Harry Kalas is so old now and makes bad judgement calls. Chris Wheeler is annoying. They need better announcers.

  18. danny Says:

Geoff, maybe you need your own blog?

  19. Geoff Says:

see i like the sarge and t-mac and kalas. wheeler is a little bit of a dufuas.

t-mac is misused talent. someone like dei lynam needs to be out in the stands doing goofy reports. t-mac needs to stick to the game. whne he sticks to the game hes a very good announcer. kalas is kalas. the sarge knows tons of baseball. i think he gives you some good stuff sometimes.

i agree that they are misused.

  20. danny Says:

I would trade Howard straight up at the deadline for a Marlins scout

  21. Geoff Says:

i think whoever the producers of this broadcast are totally suck.

  22. Geoff Says:

    weaver has really good stuff.

  23. Geoff Says:

yeah those marlins scouts are awesome. i think mike arbuckle needs replacing

  24. danny Says:

Don’t the last few weeks reinforce the idea that the Phils got lucky to sweep the braves back a few weeks ago? And just beat up crappy teams?

  25. danny Says:

As long as we get to Francisco down 2 runs in the ninth we’ll be ok in this game.

  26. Mike T. Says:

    Absolutely Danny, absolutely it does.

Yeah, the Marlins have the best scouts since that group of scouts up in Montreal.

  27. danny Says:

Funny how Charlie finally alters the line up…

to the only line up that could be worse than the previous one!

  28. danny Says:

    RUIZ GETS ON BASE!

    RUIZ GETS ON BASE!

  29. Tim Malcolm Says:

Methinks the team will get a big dressing down after this one. I really hope so.

The problem is against good pitching (aka, guys who don’t just throw fastballs) this offense is not that good. They have to remedy that.

  30. Joshua Says:

Can the Phightin’ Phils beat the great K-Rod?? He has only 2 blown saves this season

  31. Geoff Says:

Yes indeed. Good pitchers make them look really bad. They just arent patient enough and they get overpowered. shields shpould be scared to death to throw to ryan howard but hes not. Theyre even farther away from being able to win the world series than i initially thought.

  32. Geoff Says:

I still think theyll make the playoffs and win the division because the national league is not good. they just arent. but against real teams like this and boston they cant get it done. winning one or two of six games against real competition shows an awful lot. its reality check time for this team. they have tow tough road series that thyd BETTER win. something tells me the oakland A’s might not be sellers at the deadline in a big way. maybe harden but thats it.

  33. Geoff Says:

that was a stupid idea. steal second base to theyre forced to wlak rollins and make so taguchi try to get a hit off of k-rod.

  34. Mike T. Says:

No chance and hell Taguchi gets a hit – no chance.

  35. Mike T. Says:

Yeah Geoff, I see what you’re saying — but I think getting the guy in scoring position outweighs an 0-12 Taguchi. But either way – we’re not going to win this game.

  36. Joshua Says:

I disagree Geoff, I DON”T think they’ll win the division. they’ll have a really great shot but i just think the mets are gonna get a timely run and end up getting that div.

  37. Joshua Says:

and Taguchi pops up to end the game..which means if the marlins win, tehy’ll be tied for first

  38. Geoff Says:

disgraceful. fraud fraud fraud. to get SWEPT AT HOME by ANYONE! charlie isnt usually hard on them, but i think they have reached a nadir in this season. you just dont get swept at home. its time for him to go in that clubhouse and lose it. its also time to DRAMATICALLY reshuffle the lineup AND shuffle the rotation. let alone personnel acquisitions. they cant afford to lose the next two series. and the athletics have pitching thats very good as well. not good.

  39. Greg V. Says:

Haha! I would have bounced once I heard the name So Tagguchi announced. What a joke this past week has been. Time to make the beer of the day the whiskey of the day! Beer isn’t doing the trick!

  40. chrism Says:

rah rah..scot says I shouldn’t get down on this team were still in first…well this shit is getting old…were a decent team that gets the shit beat out of them by good teams…scot what’s postitive to say now?

  41. Greg V. Says:

This team better be getting reamed out in the locker room right now!

  42. Phil Says:

I’m starting to get sick of this team. They’re disgusting me and they’re making themselves out to be a mockery. You know people are thinking the Phillies are a joke now. At least Utley got a hit, but he’s not out of his slump. Howard had a good game, so did Rollins. I wonder how the 9th woulda turned out if he pinch ran Taguchi instead of Bruntlett and let Bruntlett pinch hit for Lidge…I am so fucking sick of this shit. I might stop watching them for a while because I’m getting really stressed out. They should be running with this division, but instead they’re choking.

  43. Geoff Says:

the mets need to be blown up and rebuilt. if the phillies allow the mets to catch and pass them charlie should get fired and THIS team should get blown up (save 5 guys) and rebuilt!!!!! amaro fired, arbuckle fired, AND real owners invited to buy the team. that is how disgraceful it would be to me. that is how fragile things are. you think this team is as good as advertised? obviously not. the mets are garbage. they should keep santana wright and maybe reyes and maine the rest of the mets can go for prospects.

with the talent in this lineup and cole hamels and the bullpen theres no excuse to fail to win a weakened nl east.

if they cant do that then heads need to roll hardcore.

  44. ryan Says:

what’s positive to say is that this team has had a terrible homestand……… BUT IS STILL IN FIRST PLACE. FIRST! F….I…..R….S….T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111!!!!

there isn’t a team in the history of the game that doesn’t go through stretches like this. i bet you could go back through the 1927 yankees season and find a stretch exactly like this one. the bats are cold right now, but they’ll heat up. if you are ready to jump off the ben franklin bridge over this then i say go ahead. the city’ll be better off without yas!

  45. Geoff Says:

i have a conference in DC tomorrow through wednesday. so ill only be able to follow on the internet. maybe thats a good thing

  46. Andy Says:

Ugh. Taguchi… worthless. I realize his was a strong pinch hitter last season, but he’s shown nothing so far with the Phillies (including defensive advantage over Burrell). That f-up in left field was embarrassing, and does anyone have confidence in him at the plate?

  47. Phil Says:

I’m sure the 98 Yankees and 01 Mariners didn’t go through stretches like this.

  48. Mike T. Says:

I’m not watching any of the games this week.

  49. ryan Says:

the ‘01 mariners went through a stretch like this in the playoffs for god’s sake!

  50. Phil Says:

Me neither Mike T. I could use a stress free week.

  51. Phil Says:

Yeah, and you really think with the Phillies amazing rotation that we won’t go through a stretch like that in the playoffs.

  52. Greg V. Says:

This is a good week to give the Phils a break. The games are all late at night and Oakland has some decent pitching right now. We’re not doing so hot off of good pitchers right now. There is no credit to be given to anyone right now. This team is playing some piss poor baseball.

I’d like to say I’ll tune out the Phils this week but this is my game and I’ve certainly watched worse streaks than this. But they were also worse teams. This team should be playing better.

  53. Phil Says:

I never minded watching the Phillies lose when they were expected to lose. It sucks they’re playing the west coast this week. I like late night games.

  54. Joshua Says:

well, the mets aren’t playing like garbage lately, they’ve been winning series and if they keep the lead today won another series. Reyes is currently batting almost 300 with a 487 slg. Beltran has picked it up lately, not to mention that they have some good pitching going for them, Santana, Maine, and even Pelfrey has stepped it up and has had great starts and currently shut out the rockies through 6, top of the 7th mets leading 3-0.

remember baseball is a long season, so anything can happen..i wouldn’t be surprised if the mets end up lapping the phils by the end of next week..with the mets playing seattle and NY and the phils playing Oakland and Texas.

  55. chris m Says:

ryan you say some stupid shit…we CANT beat good teams. i dont giv a shit about first place we should be with this division… i want a championship… im not satisfied with the playoffs anymore. but we all know you are…and wheres scot today saying some stupid comments like ryan and how were just fine and nothing to worry about

  56. Joshua Says:

yea, Ryan is an idiot..with that mindset, you can go talk to the mets who were in first all the way to the last week of the year.

  57. Bill Says:

Awful game. How can a team that scores 60 some runs in a week not be able to hit. The entire team is not hitting. They need to stop pressing and relax or this is going to continue.

  58. Phil Says:

    Harang, Sheets Available?
The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that Reds’ ace Aaron Harang may be available as the trade deadline approaches, although it would take multiple top prospects to pry him away. All of the teams interested in C.C. Sabathia and Erik Bedard figure to keep their ears open regarding Harang. In other news, the Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that a Phils special assistant has been in Milwaukee the past few days, giving him a chance to take a look at Ben Sheets. Sheets is in interesting player as the deadline nears as he is very injury prone but can be a devastatingly good pitcher when he stays healthy. With the Brewers hot right now and only 5 games out of first place, I don’t see them dealing him unless they received an overwhelming offer.

Read that on an mlb rumors blog.

  59. ryan Says:

last time i checked, championships are won in october, not june!… and you don’t know anything about me. and yes, we are just fine and there is nothing to worry about. we need to pick up a pitcher for the rotation, but other than that we have to let it ride and let this season play out, not make irrational judgments on the team in June before the season is even halfway over. no wonder you guys don’t wanna watch the games this week, you’re getting an ulcer over one bad homestand. i wouldn’t watch if i was you either. but i tell you what, i’ll sure as hell be watchin every game this week just like every other week. because i’m not some lame ass bandwagon fan like you that only watches when they’re winning. you obviously don’t watch that much or else you might know that there are ups and downs during the course of a season and you don’t win every game or series. its people like you that are the reason players take less money to play other places than philly.

  60. Joshua Says:

Ryan, you just contradicted your self. in the post before you said “we’re still in first..blah blah blah” yet, you just said championships are not won in june.So by that theory you shouldnt be so giddy over the fact we just lost 3 consecutive series including a sweep…because as you said, championships arent won in June. so being in first witha .5 lead means crap right now.

  61. chris m Says:

last time i checked you could loose championships in june(but im not saying that) but if you cant win in june u cant win in october…who takes less money to play somewhere else. lowell? he wanted to stay in boson its not like he didnt like philly… you know nothing. players love philly bc we are so diehard…burell? he got booed for years and wont let us trade him away bc he love the fans and the city so much….you need some knowledge

  62. chris m Says:

its now at 4 series in a row

  63. Geoff Says:

Come on man. Everyone knows the phillies owners are taking us for a ride. theyre shorting us at least 10-30 million for a payroll that needed it badly. theres no excuse for passing on torii hunter or showing aaron rowand the door. that place gets awesome attendance and its a money vaccum. its a theme park down there man. friggin joke.

oh, and except for kyle lohse. good players DONT take less money. they take more money AND/OR longer contracts. the phillies GM/ownership openly brags about how they dont give out more than 3 year contracts to any pitcher!!!!!

guess what? good players are just going to laugh and say “fuck you” when they call and offer 3 years to anyone with a reputation of good play. you CANT win like that. they wont come and play here.

thats why torii hunter didnt come. thats why aaron rowand left.
thats why they DIDNT offer mike lowell that contract but lied and acted like they did. lowells people even said they didnt. thats why youre stuck with GEOFF JENKINS PEDRO FELIZ AND SO TAGUCHI! those guys FUCKING SUCK! so taguchi should be cut IMMEDIATELY! he totally sucks.

jenkins is homerun or strikeout. same with feliz. thats GARBAGE!

sure, all of these guys can hit slop junk pitchers that dont belong in MLB but are still there because theyre in the national league. when they face good pitching they cant get it done! its as simple as that.

theyre good. because in relation to their competetion in the NL there are teams much worse than they are. but theyre just not good ENOUGH.

  64. Geoff Says:

good point. burrell has been crucified here for years! but he loves it here. maybe not enough to say no to a DH role for 16mm per year though.

  65. Phil Says:

I wouldn’t say Feliz sucks by any means dude. AMAZING glove and has a .260 BA which is respectable.

  66. Phil Says:

I should say .260 BA is respectable for a 7th hole hitter, not to mention he has 8 homers and 20 something RBIs. He’s a huge upgrade to the Dobbs/Werth platoon.

  67. Geoff Says:

feliz isnt bad if you have more production from the right field platoon or from venter field (rowand).

  68. Joshua Says:

you know what i was thinking? what does it say for the phillies knowing that the mets were capable of taking 2 of 3 from the halos away from shea

  69. Phil Says:

Joshua Halos actually play better on the road than at home. Also, we’re just in a huge slump, the Mets are coming out of a huge slump.

  70. danny Says:

ryan, you really put everything in perspective for me. What have you been my whole life?

Gosh, I feel so refreshed having read your posts.

    Gives me chills.

  71. james Says:

May the 2008 Phuckin Phillies have the same year as the 2007 Mets!!!!!
    Amen, Amen Amen.

  72. Tim Malcolm Says:

Where were these Mets fans last week? Geez, guys, it’s June. JUNE.
