Gameday: Marlins (31-23) At Phillies (32-25)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, June 01, 2008 12:00 PM

It’s a huge day for the Phillies, as they’ll try to take two of three from the first-place Marlins. If they win, they capture first again; if not, it’s 1.5 games back and more work to be done.

Cole Hamels had the opportunity to give the Phils a cushion last night, but pitched very poorly en route to a 7-3 loss. Now it’s up to Jamie Moyer to beat the Fish. He has a 3.05 ERA against the Marlins.

The Marlins counter with phenom Andrew Miller, acquired in the Miguel Cabrera/Dontrelle Willis trade from Detroit. Miller has struggled this season, bu has been effective in three of his last five starts. He’s the kind of young lefty against whom the Phils can sometimes wheeze. The alternate unis will be on display today.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (5-3) 4.45 ERA
Marlins: Andrew Miller (4-4) 5.53 ERA

Gametime: 1:35 p.m. EST
Weather: 80 degrees, partly cloudy
Television: TBS
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Feliz, Coste, Taguchi, Moyer

Whats up with the BandAid on Scott Palmers nose?

  2. chris m Says:

i live in south florida and they go nuts on miller on the talk shows bc he hasnt odne shit all year…..hes makin gus look like little schoolgirls… plus anyone else notice how rollins doesnt hustle that much on routine ground balls…it pisses me off

  3. Lewisauce Says:

Why does Ryan Howard swing at the first pitch? Why?

  4. chris m Says:

why isnt coste our everyday guy?!?!?!?

  5. NC Jason Says:

Howard should be shot for swinging at a 3-0 ball and then grounding into a DP. Note to Howard we are down 5-3 and we need base runners – please go to the plate with a plan and understand the situation.

  6. Geoff Says:

i need to check on this, but it seems like moyer almost always gives up 5 runs through 5 innings. i know hes had some good starts but this seems like the norm. thats unacceptable from your 3rd guy.

  7. NC Jason Says:

But lets be honest, he isnt really our thrid pitcher – more like 4th.

  8. chris m Says:

anybody else feel the ground shake after that dive

  9. chris m Says:

we needa article on liberthal retiring as a phillie today

  10. Mike W. Says:

There we go. Moyer stays undefeated against the Marlins and wins his 4th start in a row. Even when it was 5-1 i think we all thought we’d get right back in the game.

  11. Geoff Says:

yeah he is the 4th. i dont know how they get away with giving up 5 runs early all the time. that cant continue. ncie comeback but they shouldnt have to comeback. gotta stop giving up so many runs.

  12. Mark Says:

Way to go Phillies!! 2 of 3 from the Marlins and back into first place. Jamie hung in, Chase hit #20. Gordon got it through to Lidge Time and Lidge was, what Lidge seems to be all of the time — AWESOME!!

  13. Lewisauce Says:

I know he’s allegedly swinging the bat better overall, and his HR and RBI numbers ain’t bad, but Howard really still seems kinda clueless. Early in the game, against a (rookie? at least young) left hander, he swings away at the first pitch and flies out with a man on first. At least Burrell made the guy work and throw eight pitches the next at bat. And then swinging at a 3-0? DP?

I’m beginning to think the problem isn’t his eyesight, his timing, his mechanics or anything physical like that. I’m beginning to think he’s simply got shit for brains.

I’ll stop with the rant and take the win. Burrell once again proving his worth to the team and showing why he should be resigned. And how ’bout Jenkins coming through huge there? It seems like our bench is the best in the NL.

  14. Sean Says:

I just got back from the clearwater game in sarasota. Joe Savery started and gave up 5 runs in 6 innings. Snelling didnt do anything at all, but dang does his appearance look similar to John Kruk. Baez started at third base and had a great game with a home-run. Adrian Cordenas the 2B looked strong also.

  15. Clare Says:

Back from the game! It was fun (and hot!), seeing Mike retire was cool. I’m also going to the next three games, woo!

  16. ryan Says:

fantastic game today!!!! i really enjoyed myself watching it. thanks phils!!! you are one of the best and most exciting teams to watch in the majors. this has already been a really fun season. i can’t wait for september

  17. Clare Says:

So I’m graduating tomorrow and me and two of my friends are going to the game afterwards and we’re wearing Phillies gear under our graduation gowns and making a sign to hold up, it’s cute. So if you see that on TV it’s totally us!!

  18. Geoff Says:

congrats clare. well keep that in mind

  19. Clare Says:

    Thanks!!!

  20. Bruce Says:

    Clare~
Congratulations to a real Phillies Phan. Be looking for your sign. What will it read?

  21. Bruce Says:

    Lewisauce~
I was amused with your “rant” on Howard. After you calmed down, I’m sure you took another look at Howard’s contribution in today’s game. He had a great at bat in the 1st inning with Utley on 2nd (after his stolen base). He came through with a clutch RBI single up the middle. Nice to see a run “manufactured” this way. Howard also took a hit in the ribs by an errant pitch in the 7th inning and later scored in the inning.

Oh.. Howard also played some defense. A few lines from game report:
” Howard grabbed a sharp liner by Mike Jacobs and turned it into a double play in the sixth. Howard also made a sprawling catch on a sacrifice attempt by Jacque Jones in the seventh. ”

Definitely a good day for Howard and a important win for our Phillies. ;-)

  22. Clare Says:

Thanks, Bruce!! It’s not huge since we only have 4 people since it’s on my partial season plan, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be something along the lines of:

The Heading: 2008 To Do List

Go to prom (With a check next to it)
    Graduate (With a check)
Go to College (With a box ready for a check; Pitt by the way!!!)
Win the World Series (With a box ready for a check andddd with much more emphasis than the others) =)

So maybe with our caps and gowns on and our sign we’ll make the TV! My seats are along the third base line, 135!

Haha I kind of want to make a sign sometime that says “Chase, I’m a History major too!!!) since that’s what I am and that’s what he was and since I love him. And no, I don’t just love him for his looks! And I’ve loved him since he first came up, so I’m not just the typical girl Utley lover. Plus I know his stats and such!! =)

    ANYWAY. Go Phillies!!!

  23. Phil Says:

How can you not love Utley. He’s going to go down as the best Phillie of all time.

  24. Clare Says:

I know, he’s simply amazing!!! I remember when he was just a utility player and I would get so excited to see him in the lineup playing 1st haha.

  25. Phil Says:

It’s ashame we had Polanco because he coulda came up a couple of years earlier.

  26. Phanatic74 Says:

Utley – You even have Mike Schmidt saying that he wishes he were more like Chase while he was playing. Who’s next Carlton? Utley is freakin off the hook . . . . .

  27. Lewisauce Says:

    Bruce,

    **grumble grumble**

    You make good points.

    **grumble grumble**

  28. Jay Says:

Well its good to see the Good Guys can still pull a lil Magic out of their hat as in Today’s Gamedaw Brew. Good job guys!

  29. erik Says:

    lewissauce
howard did not fly out with a man on first your rants are bullshit becasue your facts are not legitimate. he flew out to the wall after chase took the guy deep and they almost went back to back. get you facts straight before you start blasting people

  30. Phil Says:

People need to stop trashing Howard. The guy has been in a slump(not as bad as of recently) but he’s going to come around when we need him most, after the all-star game. He’s still gonna pound over 40 homers and 120 RBIs. He puts fans in the seat. The most exciting thing about baseball is the long ball, and he does not fail at providing those for the Phillies. He’s been having much better at bats the past few weeks. He is a staple to the Phillies and a key reason that we have a chance at winning a championship. I don’t understand why people think we should trade him.

  31. Geoff Says:

nice there, clare. i am a pitt alum from 2004 and 2006. great place to go to school.
