Gameday: Phillies (38-26) At Braves (32-31)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, June 08, 2008 12:29 PM

News: Chipper Jones is out of the lineup today with a right quad strain. He’s day-to-day.

On this scorching Sunday, the Phillies will attempt to sweep the Braves out of Turner Field. For a team that is 25-10 at home this season, we’re looking at rare stuff, indeed. Last night the offense hit when they had to, with Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins pacing a 6-2 victory.

Today Adam Eaton will try to ensure the sweep. He has been good lately (5 ER in his last three starts), and it would be great for him to get seven innings, giving a hard-working bullpen a bit of a rest despite the day off tomorrow. He has not faced the Braves this season. Jorge Campillo is on the hill for the Braves — the reliever-turned-starter has pitched 3.1 scoreless innings against the Phils this season. Bobby Cox is looking for Campillo to throw 100 pitches today.

All players will be feeling the heat — temperatures are set to stay in the 90s all day.

Phillies: Adam Eaton (2-3) 4.63 ERA
Braves: Jorge Campillo (2-0) 1.79 ERA

Gametime: 1:30 p.m. EST
Weather: 93 degrees, mostly sunny
Television: TBS
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Dobbs, Coste, Eaton

Your gameday beer: This is Lagunitas’ Maximus, an imperial IPA. Maximus is a grand beer, light but vocal in its stance. Maximus means ultimate, and the Phils should be shooting for an ultimate performance, especially from starter Eaton. To sweep the Braves at Turner Field would be tremendous — time to give the maximum, ultimate performance necessary to put a stamp on this series.

dobbsy and coste both in the lineup today. this is the best lineup we can possibly throw out vs a RHP.

  2. Mike W. Says:

    Howard delivers in the 1st!

  3. Josh Says:

I can’t find the game on TV. It seems like TBS is blacked out for some reason. Anyone else with Comcast having this issue?

  4. Greg V. Says:

    It’s on CW

Didn’t take long for the Braves to tie us! Still early though!

  5. Mike W. Says:

    Eaton’s back to normal.

  6. Mike W. Says:

    Howard again!

  7. Paul Says:

Howard waited a little too long to try to take third. Oh well… I’ll take his 2 doubles.

  8. Mike W. Says:

Ha, our 7/8 hitters are batting 360 and 315.

  9. danny Says:

    nice hard liner vic

  10. Rob Cowie Says:

    Eaton painting corners like Picasso

  11. chris m Says:

it took me a while to see the last 12 hrs of comments. i dont understand this whole negativity thing. were not allowaed to be negative on a guy like howard thats hitting .209? isnt this a blog? arnt blogs there to discuss diffeant opinions? THey dont see the negative comments in the dugout so i dodnt understand how our negativity affects the vibe like gavin says? i like this team and im excited about it but not about howard.(even though hes had a good game) this is a blog! express your feelings!

  12. erik Says:

well i guess it comes down to personality. some people see the glass as half empty, some see it as half full. i believe that is where our differences are coming from. so we as the positive understand you are expressing your feelings, it is just that we dont understand those feelings. like i said last night, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, however it does not mean that i have to agree with it. if you read closely, mike t has called people insane and idiots and chris was telling people to get their heads out their asses. they are hostile comments that are not needed. and the vibe thing has nothing to do with the players. you are killing the vibes of the fans. if you were ever at a phillies game or an eagles game, you would understand that the fan vibe is also important to the game. jroll on his comcast commercial has stated that the team feeds off the fans. so as i see it, it is important for the fans to be estatic as possible to help cheer this team along. so to sum it all up, dude you have your right to your opinion and please feel free to express it, but understand you are going to get a lot of opposing feedback.

  13. erik Says:

oh and ted turner is a piece of shit. he blacked out the game on his television network because he didnt want the team that he owns to be swept on national television. what a prick.

  14. Bill Says:

I can’t believe the game is blacked out in Philly! I am in Clearwater so I have the game here. If I was home I would be so PO’d! He really is an idiot. These television contracts all suck. Even Comcast not selling to Dish or Directtv is BS.

  15. danny Says:

the tbs announcer said eaton has been our whipping boy because of “a few spotty performances”

    hahaha

  16. danny Says:

i vote for a 10 spot here in the top of the 7th

  17. erik Says:

    i second that motion

  18. erik Says:

not a gem, but i will take eatons performance today. that is what you expect out a 5th starter.

  19. chris m Says:

erik, i still dont see how im being negative, i see how others are… me saying howard sucks when he does suck is a fact. anybody at this piont would be better. since the team is playing pretty good ball should i bite my tongue about howard or what?imagine this team with a good starting 1B defensivly and offensivley

  20. chris m Says:

btw chipper is a pussy… hes trying to delay his inevitable slump

  21. bob Says:

eaton’s performance today was ok, but you’ve got to remember that he was facing ATL-lite with McCann and Chipper out of the lineup. The Phils, on the other hand, should have put up more damage against this pitcher.

  22. erik Says:

agreed chipper is a pussy. i see your point about the batting average and i agree he needs to pick the average up. but going into today he is 11th in the mlb with rbis. his job at the cleanup spot is to hit people in. as long as he stays in the top 15 in the majors in rbis, i cant really get on his case too much.

  23. erik Says:

bob i like the atl-lite. very creative.

  24. chris m Says:

good piont but think about all the oppentunities he blown. look at the people in front of him and often he has people on base. he has blown alot of situational hitting chance this year with people on 3rd nd less the 2 outs. he could easily be leading the league in rbis by a ton if he hit situationally. plus his a feilding has cost us this year. everytime he comes to the plate they give him the whole left side to lay down a bunt and get a single. not once have i seen him do it and not once have i seen him do it when were down in a game and need baserunners

  25. erik Says:

ok but doesnt the bunting idea come from the coaching staff. and honestly, maybe he cant bunt. he probably never bunted all the much from little league all the way up to the majors.

  26. erik Says:

not to mention, chase has eaten up at lot of those rbis before howard even got a chance to get them. but then again, utley is the best ball player in the majors

  27. chris m Says:

i could turn into a pro bunter if i work on it. hes a pro hitter. instead of all his commercials he could do some practice bunting. he has better hand eye coordination then me and i could go in there and do it so i know with a little practice hee can do it

  28. erik Says:

how many 4 hole hitters do you know that bunt? that is all i am saying.

  29. dan Says:

Why does it seem like the Braves and Phillies are waiting for the other team to win the game? We need to want it!

  30. chris m Says:

well ive seen delgado do it… its for the team. if he could do it theres a ton of times weve could of used it. i know were all about the team so how bout this guy puts his pride and price tag aside and help the team out when a solo homerun isnt gonna do it

  31. chris m Says:

i know jrolls been slumping but it seems like hes always able to get on when the games on the line

  32. chris m Says:

    ya baby shane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. chris m Says:

alite well howard could really shut me up here

  34. erik Says:

well chris, lets see what howard can do

  35. Mike W. Says:

    HOWARD BABY

  36. erik Says:

that will do pig, that will do, quote from movie The replacements

  37. dan Says:

    count ‘em, 3 doubles

  38. chris m Says:

well he did shut me up for today..hopefully this kick starts things but im not gonna get too excited bc he fooled us in the houstan series

  39. erik Says:

    and 4 ribbies

  40. erik Says:

i agree with your houston comment, but one can hope

  41. chris m Says:

i wish we rested lidge last nite…now its pretty important

  42. erik Says:

depending on how other stacked up today, this could put howard up to number 5 in the majors with rbis. with utley tied for second with 56 and howard possibly at 5th with 49, i would say the heart of our order looks pretty good

  43. chris m Says:

well if howard hit like hes shown in the past then we would be fine….he would be in the lead in rbi’s by 15

  44. chris m Says:

    how nice is that sweep

  45. erik Says:

great sweep, the phillies have accounted for 27% of the braves losses at home in one 3 game series. this team is fucking hot and i love it. chris, nice having a civil debate today. i enjoyed it.

  46. Clare Says:

    Woooooooo!!!

  47. chris m Says:

good to see some fans chatting it up with me through the game we need more of it

  48. Geoff Says:

solid sweep, but shouldnt have used lidge yesterday, that was retarded. you cant overuse your bullpen like that.

it was kind of funny though, because you could tell he really didnt want to be out there because he pitched to contact just so he could induce some easy outs and get out of there in like 3 minutes.

this team has that swagger that you need to win a title, now all they need to do is plug one or two final holes at the deadline and theyll be good to go. im tired of arguing about the rotation, its really obvious as it has been for years.

hey, there was a ryan howard sighting today. he and victorino stepped up to show that they should still be on this team today. victorino has pretty much redeemed himself from the three or so games he cost us earlier in the season.

if they can put some distance on the division i think the owners will approve the bolstering of the rotation and the bullpen so that we can all feel better about a legitimate world series run. if you cant get a number two then get a number three. just get another solid starter in there that you can rely on in the playoffs. just improve the rotation. improve the bullpen. add to it. you dont have to get carried away. just make an improvement to give these players the help they need.

theyve been playing well for a few years now and i think they deserve the support from management to go all the way and end this championship drought. thats the only thing i care about in regards to this team. i dont care about winning another division title and blowing it in the playoffs because good pitchers bring this lineup back down to earth. i want it all, i want the drought to end and this is the best chance for it to end. this team can do it. all im asking is just please make sure that they have what they need.

PS. fantasy baseball is stupid. so is fantasy football or fantasy anything, its the biggest retard waste of time ive ever seen. thats teh equivalent of playing world of warcraft. please…go outside and get some sun and go to a real baseball game.

  49. Geoff Says:

also, im not negative. i just understand the game of baseball in the postseason. think of it like playoff hockey. everything is ratcheted up. everything is harder and more intense. no room for error. the boston red sox won the world series last year and they still went out and make sure that they loaded up on solid starters.

they have beckett – dice-k – lester – bucholz – colon – wakefield – masterson and schilling is still waiting on the dl out there. thats insane! when theyre all healthy thats frightening. im just saying yknow, it wouldve been nice to have hoarded starting pitching so that youre in a position like that instead of relying on someone that pitched in the bullpen alst year, someone thats 45 years old, and someone that had an era of over 6 last year to fill the bulk of your rotation.

but hey look on the bright side, they are executing the plan i laid out for them to get a world series ring some months back. theyre well on their way and thats encouraging as long as the rest of the plan falls into place.

  50. AP Says:

4 in a row! A great time to be a Phillies fan! And I got to actually SEE the game today.

    How much is MLB.TV?

    - AP

  51. Geoff Says:

Also, Im so negative that i just bought another 4 game pack.

  52. Tim Malcolm Says:

MLB.tv is $120 per year. I got it, it does the job.

So I just got home from a day at the beach (amazing girls in Old Lyme, Conn.) and have been on the horn with my pops all day about the score. My dad was napping when it went final, and I phoned my mom, who relayed to me “the guy whose name starts with ‘L’” got the third out.

How good I am: I wrote that gameday lineup at 10:30 a.m. today, and I got it right. Good day, guys, good day.

  53. Geoff Says:

also, how is the entire boston red sox series not sold out? i should not have been able to get tickets to any of those games. come on guys

  54. Brian Says:

That series was advertised as a sell out, but the phillies were holding back some tickets to sell for packages which I assume they have given up on selling.

  55. Geoff Says:

i bought anotgher of the 4 game packages. i had alreayd bought some of the six game packages they sold at the beginning of the year.

  56. Geoff Says:

theres still tickets left for some good series. the braves in september like in the alst week of the season has some good seats left, among others

  57. dan Says:

most people dont want sox tickets because they dont like interleague play. ill be there though. is the next mets series sold out?

  58. Phil Says:

The Sox games are sold out unless you get a package thing, and the Mets tix aren’t sold out yet.
