Gameday: Phillies (41-28) At Cardinals (40-29)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, June 14, 2008 02:46 PM

Kyle, meet the 2008 Phillies. Phillies, meet Kyle.

Kyle Lohse will take the mound against his former team for the first time, with the Phils coming off a 20-run explosion against the Cardinals Friday night. With the Phils Lohse was 3-0 with a 4.72 ERA, providing the Phils with a bunch of six-inning, three-run starts — you know, Kendrickian starts. This season, however, he’s baffling teams with six-inning, one- and two-run starts. He has won his last four starts (23 IP, 5 ER).

The Phils, meanwhile, have Adam Eaton on the hill. Eaton has been quite consistent with a string of Kendrickian starts, including his last, a six-inning, three-run effort against the Braves that the Phils later won. Against the Cardinals (seven starts) he has a 6.82 ERA.

Carlos Ruiz had a career game yesterday (4-for-6, 4 RBI) and is in the starting lineup again.

Phillies: Adam Eaton (2-3) 4.62 ERA
Cardinals: Kyle Lohse (7-2) 3.92 ERA

Gametime: 3:55 p.m. EST
Weather: 83, sunny
Television: FOX
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Ruiz, Eaton

Your gameday beer: A recommendation by Phil, it’s Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. I’ve heard varying opinions about this one, but a truth remains: It’s the right beer for a hot day in the Midwest summer sun. Well, it’s a hot day in Saint Louis, so crack one of these open. It’s very lemony (too lemony?), so it screams of dog day beer. Have some barbecue or jerk chicken with this.

Go Phillies!

  1. scot Says:

    C’mon Phils!!!!

  2. Julie Says:

Excellent beer selection Phil. Summer Shandy is delicious, but Berry Weiss is my favorite. Do yourself a favor and pick up a mix pack. The honey weiss and red are tasty too.

Can’t wait to see the game on TV… Go Phils!

  3. Phil Says:

I actually just tried the summer shandy yesterday because my friend is obsessed with summer beers and gave me a few to try. I happen to be a huge fan of lemonade, so I instantly fell in love with this beer.

  4. Phil Says:

Also Tim, if you need more beer selections let me know. I am a total beer snob.

  5. Rob Cowie Says:

    A to the E-Z , Adam Eaton.

    Honkiest moment of the day.

  6. Phil Says:

Looks like Ryan Howard is back!!! KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

  7. chris m Says:

scot might get mad if you say that. saying something about howard is like walking on eggshells with some people here. he says howard is paid to drive in runs which is true. but is it a part time job or is he there to keep a little rally going too? we know hes not paid to play defense bc hes cost us a loss or two this year with the glove.

  8. Phil Says:

Actually, Howard’s defense and base running skills really improved. You know what else improved too? His ability to strike out even more and break his own strike out record. I think 199 wasn’t good enough for him. He wants 200.

  9. Phil Says:

Also, no Eaton trashing. Neither of those runs were his fault. 1. Rollins should have caught that ball, 2. HOW THE FUCK DID THAT GUY HIT THAT OUT OF THE PARK!!! High inside fast balls never produce homers. They produce strikes or jammed pop ups, but everyone chases them anyway for some reason. Also, that was his 1st homer of the year. He got really lucky.

  10. chris m Says:

phil you remember the drops howard has had this year? i remember he did it at a costly time and we eventually lost the game. arguably his fualt. ive seen him drop at least 4 balls this year. not ground balls but balls thrown to him in the air. never seen it happen but to him

  11. scot Says:

chris, homeboy, how old are you? just conversation here about a baseball team. don’t take it to personally that I disagree with ya bout howard. i’ll be amongst the first to say he’ll break the k record this year. and then probably rebreak it next year.

  12. scot Says:

chris is pontius pilate to howard’s jesus of nazareth. :)

  13. Phil Says:

When your pitcher hits a lead-off double you hit him in. WTF!!!

  14. chris m Says:

i didnt personally attack you or take it personal. were having a baseball debate. btw dont call me homeboy, i dont associate with people that talk like that and i dont appriciate people talking to me like that. im 21 years old. dont get so defensive dawg

  15. chris m Says:

well im sure howard would get him in

  16. NC Jason Says:

I want in. #1 I do not care who you are if you are trying to make a case for Howard’s defense you are an idiot no two ways about that. #2 Howard sucks at defense and I have seen paraplegics run faster. He is the worst defensive 1B in the NL – name one everyday starter that is worse. We have had two runners picked off in the past week but because Howard is slower then balls they steal second. And I do not care if the Phillies pay him to hit the ball out of the park his approach is horrific (last week he swung at a 3-0 ball and then struck out). So lets make this clear – Howard blows. If you need more of an opinion just ask managers like Booby Cox who INT. WALKED UTLEY TO GET TO HOWARD.

  17. chris m Says:

pat the bat! howards back!!!!!!!!!! wait its 1 at bat

  18. chris m Says:

but jason he had a good game yesterday…doesnt that mean hes changed his approach over nite adn hes back for good. ..its mid june and this guy is hitting .212 terrible. for a 3 hole hitter to get int walked for the cleanup hitter that is bad, espescially to LOAD THE BASES!!
the sad part is i want him back too, everytime he gets a hit he sees dollar signs, i see more prospects from the angels.
everyone thinks im rooting agianst him, i want him back! but im not goin to say he back until hes back, not after 1 game!!!

  19. NC Jason Says:

Sure I would like nothing more for the guy to start mashing – but right now people need to realize that this is not a slump – it is a piss poor year – hitting .209 is not a bad start it is sucking worse then a whore with herpes. And I do not walk around with a cubby because he hits two home runs infront of his family – get the average over .240 and then I will start changing my tune.

  20. Phil Says:

Um, Howard runs slower than paraplegics? Dude, Howard is actually really fast considering his size. Secondly I’ve seen him make some really bad dropped ball plays, but I’ve seen him make more awesome diving catches than those this season. He’s not nearly as bad at D this year as last year. The problem with Phillies fans is they only want to point out negatives and never want to point out positives. His D has sucked his whole career so it sucks this year too. Just like Eaton. He was horrible last year so he’s horrible this year eventhough he’s having a good year. Howard is faster than Burrell, Coste, and Feliz, so if he runs slower than a paraplegic then they must run slower than a dead person.

  21. Phil Says:

Also, when are people going to jump on Rollins’ shit. He’s been hitting like shit. I’m starting to think Victorino should bat lead off.

  22. chris m Says:

his 2nd homerun was in a clutch situation right? o wait it was when the game was 14-2. i like the metaphors jason. and it is soooo easy for him to raise his average since hes hitting so bad…1-4 and hes raising his average significantly

  23. NC Jason Says:

Phil what would you rather Howard make the runtine play or make the highlight play 1 out of ever 15 chances – come on dude. WOW Howard makes a web gem and then he shits his pants on a pick-off play – but you want me to praise him? Are you serious?

And the parplegic comment is a joke stupid.

  24. Phil Says:

Chris, I pointed that out earlier. He loves to hit his homers and get his RBIs when it doesn’t matter at all.

  25. chris m Says:

i would like a switch with rollins and vic bc rollins could drive in runs…rollins is still hitting .273 not.212

  26. NC Jason Says:

    Thanks Chris.

PS I actually do not know if Howard shits his pants. That is a joke too.

  27. chris m Says:

no i agreed with u earlier phil…someone else was riding you over that

  28. Phil Says:

NC Jason you’re being a dick. You’re right, I’d rather him make routine plays, but his defense is getting better. Also, don’t joke about something that is false information. On any given day there are 2-3 players slower than him, and that’s not including the pitcher becasue they usually don’t try and run fast either. I can totally see you all being negative about his hitting because I agree with you all and am just as frustrated as everyone else with his hitting, but his fielding IS getting better, and his base running skills are good considering how fat he is.

  29. NC Jason Says:

    Phil = Big Brown

    Kidding – but seriously

  30. chris m Says:

hahaha… man you dont gotta clarify EVERYTHING!

  31. Phil Says:

Rollins hits better with runners in scoring position too. Victorino hits a lot of extra base hits and if he hits a single he can steal well.

  32. Phil Says:

    How am I big brown?

  33. NC Jason Says:

When I joke I have to be accurate? Were you picked on as a kid? Did you cry to your mom when the bullies hit you? Did she tell you that it was okay and to be the bigger man. Shut Up! And why are yolu taking me bashing Howard personal? He sucks we all can agree to that.

  34. chris m Says:

phil…eaton is not having a good year.hes having a decent year but good to HIS standards…his ERA is 4 .71…average not good

  35. NC Jason Says:

Because people he been on you since you started typing

  36. chris m Says:

where did scot go? he was the one taking the howard bashiing personal…calling me homeboy…who the fuck is he to call someone homeboy

  37. NC Jason Says:

Lets also remember that he is one of the league leaders in quality starts – just saying

  38. NC Jason Says:

I love this site it gives me people to vent and bash while I am in NC listening to the game on XM – PS why the fuck does fox ALWAYS show the Red Sox?

  39. chris m Says:

didnt know that… i accept being wrong then…but i think hes been what we need from a 5 but hasnt been ‘great’, but unlike last year he has kept us in games, i guess that what we need a 5 to do

  40. chris m Says:

i always get the braves games which irritates me more. but today the red sox are on pisses me off that i even got the extra innings package and it still doesnt show it

  41. NC Jason Says:

I will give him the whole lack of run support thing – but he needs to pitch better from start to start. Consistancy – that is what we want from most of the players! Myers Eaton and Howard!

  42. NC Jason Says:

Last week on espn Stark released a new stat for pitchers who get terrible run support and the Phillies were amoung the team leaders with Hamles and Eaton in the top three pitchers.

  43. chris m Says:

hamels has got screwed a lot this year… eaton has to earn it

  44. Phil Says:

Eaton is our #5 starter!!! He could be most peoples #4 starter. He had 3 really bad outings in a row and it killed his ERA. This is his 8th quality start this year, or 9th maybe? As for Howard, his offense has been horrible, and I think his at bats suck, all I did was say his defense has improved which it has and that he is fast for how fat he is, and you’re jumping all over my case. Now I realize why, you’re a fucking red neck from North Carolina. I guess you haven’t been watching the Phillies enough to see Howard’s defense and speed increasing. I’m not supporting Howard, I am simply making a statement and you’re being a total douche bag about it. Why would it matter if I was bullied or picked on as a kid, and what if I was, or someone else on this site was. That would make you even more of a terrible human being for picking on people’s insecurities.

  45. NC Jason Says:

HAHA Phil, I bet I have a higher degree then you. And I am from Philly. I have said before that I have XM and listen to just about every game. And I really believe you get the shit kicked out of you every day for the way to take things personal! You called me a terrrible human because I bust ball. Wouldit make me more horrible if I called you a retard for not relaxing and taking a joke or would that be too much for your eyes to read? AND I STUCK UP FOR EATON DUMBASS Apperently you are insecure which would explain the lenght it took you to respond.

    Howard blows and you suck.

  46. chris m Says:

i said eaton has pitched well for a number 5

  47. NC Jason Says:

I gave him credit for pithing well

  48. NC Jason Says:

Phil when you go to Eagles games do you yell at the fans to stop being so mean?

  49. NC Jason Says:

Odds Howard ties the game in the 9th?

  50. NC Jason Says:

Three pitches for 2 outs? Are you kidding me?

  51. NC Jason Says:

Should have saved some runs from last night. Eaton gets no support again.

  52. chris m Says:

    4 pitches in the ninth….nice pateint hitting…what a jk.

  53. NC Jason Says:

They said the ball Jenks hit, hit the ground and then the fieldeer trapped it with hit bare hand? Was it?

  54. chris m Says:

btw everyone… hhes back….howard is on his way back. still…..1-4 his average is on the way up

  55. chris m Says:

i think everyone left? i didnt see it

  56. NC Jason Says:

Shitty for Eaton. Time to watch the golf and CWS.

  57. Brian G. Says:

Yea it hit the ground, no question about it. But what can ya do? Next time hit it over the fence, and we won’t have that problem.

  58. chris m Says:

NO to the CWS im in tallahassee right now and we just tied it and gave up 11 run inning… my roomate is our 3rd baseman and i know shits gonna hit the fan with him

  59. Phil Says:

Actually NC Jason, you probably do have a higher degree than me. I’m getting my bachelor’s in civil engineering. Higher IQ, probably not. I’m getting defensive because I don’t know you. You’re just a stranger on a website and you’re getting on my case over a fact, not an opinion. I don’t want my “balls broken” by someone I don’t know, it’s as simple as that. I don’t know you, I don’t want to know you, and I don’t like you. The Eaton thing wasn’t directed towards you. It took me so long to respond because I closed my laptop to watch the game.

Aside from that. Is anyone else sick of the Phillies offense being totally impatient at the plate? Even Chase Utley was tonight. I’m really frustrated about the inning where Eaton had the lead-off double. There is no reason at all that he shouldn’t have scored a run. Rollins, Victorino, and Utley should have tried to do a better job scoring him in. Even he was trying to help his own cause because of the lack of run support he gets.

  60. Geoff Says:

of course kyle lohse beats them.

  61. scot Says:

Chris, I left to buy a fathers day gift and listen to the game on the radio while in the car since it wasn’t on tv here. Sorry that you missed me. I thought of ya though when as soon as I got in the car the espn radio commentator mentioned how he thought Howard’s defense had improved this year, and that Howard is an underated defensive 1b. Good stuff.

  62. Phil Says:

Scot, read this whole thread. It’s me getting bashed about thinking his defense improved.

  63. chris m Says:

well i know how scot likes the facts. phil now you got a partner. you got pretty lonely and you needed some help. heres the facts howard is on pace for more errors this years then last year and even the year before. facts!!! so hes underated. maybe…maybe hes not the worst in the nl by a lot but by a little… and hes obvisiously not improving. theres the facts for the two of you to chew on

  64. Phil Says:

Hm, and his range is down too. Maybe I’m not seeing it because I’ve seen him make some good plays this year.

  65. chris m Says:

ha your taking the advice of someone that doesnt watch them everyday but someone that gets to watch their game once a month..busch league scot…get the facts straight

  66. chris m Says:

of course hes made some good plays…he made good plays last year and the year before… if you play everyday your gonna get some plays hit to you where you gotta dive. some you make some you dont. but its the routine plays. you dont get errors for extremely tough plays for hes gotten the errors on fairly rountine plays. and he doesnt make our infield better. pujols makes his team better. he digs balls. occasionaly hoaward will but not as much as he should.

  67. chris m Says:

and his range factor is down this year!so your saying how is range is getting better well its way down this year. i dont like those type of stats but thats what you guys get to be proved wrong

  68. Phil Says:

Pujols is a way better play than Howard all around, besides natural power. That’s like comparing apples to oranges. Howard isn’t the leader of this team. He just wants money and his picture on the box of video games. It’s ashame because I don’t think he had this mentality until his dad drilled it into him.

  69. scot Says:

Yeah, this was a brutal read. I remember when reading the comments here was enjoyable.

  70. Phil Says:

I mentioned earlier his range is down. I checked it to look at his errors this year compared to last year.

  71. chris m Says:

well pujols is better but howard wants to be compared to him with the paycheck so im comparing him to the same guy his agent does!

  72. Phil Says:

haha Howard really compares himself to Pujols? He should compare himself to Adam Dunn with more pop in his bat.

  73. Phil Says:

And more k’s and a lower average. The Reds don’t bat him 4th for a reason. We should follow suit.

  74. chris m Says:

phil i like the debate with you. scot on the other hand called me homeboy! he doesnt know what im like. but phil it was been fun throwing knowledge back and forth!but scot likes to throw stats out there that have been scrolling accross espn ALL DAY

  75. chris m Says:

thats what he should compare himself to but with more POTENTIAL….during arbitration he said he should get paid Pujols money bc their comparable

  76. danny Says:

I wish we could win every game :(

  77. Phil Says:

Thanks Chris. The debate on Howard’s defense after looking at the stats does rule in your favor. I honestly didn’t look at his numbers, just the fact that I’ve seen him make some good plays that I’ve never seen him make before. Anyway, at least he got a hit tonight.

  78. Phil Says:

What is Pujols’ pay day anyway? Is Howard retarded? Did he just pick the best 1B in baseball and compare himself to him? He should look at what Dunn gets paid and say, pay me that, I’d respect that at least.

  79. chris m Says:

no he compared himself to pujols when they had the same experience… their first arbitration experiance…

  80. scot Says:

no worries, chris. no offense taken. i hardly consider our discussion worth of the term debate anyway.

  81. Mark Says:

This is what always scares me about big scores — that the offense burns out and takes the day off in the next game.
