Gameday: Phillies (41-29) At Cardinals (41-29)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, June 15, 2008 01:10 PM

Happy Father’s Day, dads.

Today marks the final game of a nine-game road swing for the Phils. Currently they stand at 5-3 on the trip after a 3-2 loss to Kyle Lohse and the Cardinals yesterday. Today Brett Myers will try to take the series, and he’ll have to pitch better than his last start, a five-run performance against the Marlins Tuesday. He surrendered three homers in that game, adding to his league-leading total of 18 given up. He has given up four or more runs in half (7/14) of his starts.

Myers and Co. will face Cardinals rookie Mitchell Boggs. Besides having a weird hybrid name, Boggs is a 24-year-old right-hander from Georgia. In his first start he went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits against the Reds in Cincinnati. According to scouting reports, Boggs will work his fastball to set up an effective slider, making him more of a late-inning bullpen type of pitcher. The Phils will need to be patient with Boggs and make him miss with the fastball.

Both Shane Victorino and Pedro Feliz are getting the day off — Jayson Werth and Greg Dobbs are in the lineup. Chris Coste, a father for the second time now, is back and in the lineup, as well.

Phillies: Brett Myers (3-8) 5.34 ERA
Cardinals: Mitchell Boggs (1-0) 3.86 ERA

Gametime: 2:15 p.m. EST
Weather: 86, sunny
Lineup: Rollins, Werth, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Dobbs, Coste, Myers

Your gameday beer: Time to pull out a win and finish the road trip 6-3. That would be nice. For today’s drink, go with Old Stock Ale from North Coast Brewery. It’s a long sipper, brewed with classic Maris Otter malt and Fuggles and East Kent Goldings hops. It’s the kind of sweet beer you should enjoy with your dad today, as you sit back and catch the Phils. (Then Tiger’s closeout on Torrey Pines, then the Celtics’ closeout on Los Angeles.)

Go Phillies!

  1. Brian Michael Says:

I figure you’re reading this so, Happy Father’s Day, Dad! I remember my first game with you when I was 6 years old – Ozzie Virgil hit a homer.

    Go Phils!

  2. Tim Malcolm Says:

Lineup posted. Couple guys get days off.

    Rollins
    Werth
    Utley
    Howard
    Burrell
    Jenkins
    Dobbs
    Coste
    Myers

  3. Phil Says:

    Why give Victorino off?!?!?!?!?!

  4. scot Says:

Is this the second time in a week that Dobbs has started for Feliz? Hopefully Myers doesn’t get hit too hard to the hot corner today.

  5. Bruce Says:

It’s interesting to note that there are two remaining players that have started all 70 games…. Utley and Howard.

I too wonder why Victorino is not in the line-up, especially with Rollins in a mini slump.

  6. chris m Says:

howard hasnt started all the games…hes probaly played in all of them but he was benched earliier for his lack of hitting … it didnt help though

  7. Phil Says:

Charlie has benched him a few times this year. Utley will start every game this year.

  8. Tim Malcolm Says:

My God this woman singing the anthem SUCKS.

  9. chris m Says:

    hes back!!!!!!

  10. NC Jason Says:

Myers NEEDS to shut the Cards down in the first – the most important inning is the one after you have scored. 1,2,3 then get back to hitting.

PS Jroll steals second – where has that been?

  11. Tim Malcolm Says:

Chris, not yet. Let’s hold off on the es-hay, ack-bay.

  12. chris m Says:

    he hasnt been on base

  13. chris m Says:

i know im messing around the guy has to have a couple good works before i officially declares hes back

  14. scot Says:

can any pitcher on this team have a shutdown inning after the offense scores? my goodness.

  15. chris m Says:

    weeks***

  16. Phil Says:

This game is over. A crazy phillies fan needs to assassinate Myers.

  17. scot Says:

huh. aaron miles profile pic on gamecast sorta looks like msnbc’s chuck todd.

  18. NC Jason Says:

It has been the same story with both Myers and Eaton – pitch well enough to get a quality start but not good enough to dominate. It is almost like they wait for the offense to bail them out.

  19. chris m Says:

our situational hitting wasnt good yesterday and it hasnt started off well. werth has to get that guy over to third. it didnt hurt us here but yesterday it cost us the game… miles did the job…nice start by the fat slob myers

  20. NC Jason Says:

Memo to Myers – you suck

  21. NC Jason Says:

Over/under 45 pitches in the first inning for Myers

  22. scot Says:

    damnit myers.

  23. chris m Says:

well id say myers leads the league in runs in the first inning

  24. scot Says:

Tim, what are the chances that during Myers starts you switch the gameday beer to a stiff whiskey?

  25. Tim Malcolm Says:

    It’s possible, scot. It’s possible.

  26. NC Jason Says:

How about gameday cyanide for Myers?

  27. Phil Says:

If you’re drinking a stiff whiskey when Myers is starting that means there will be a lot of broken TV’s.

  28. NC Jason Says:

I think Myers drinks before he starts

  29. scot Says:

Ya know, the thing with Myers, and maybe it’s just in my mind, but it seems when he gets hit he gets hit HARD. I mean you can look at a Kendrick box score after the game and see that he gave up 8 hits in 6 innings, and it doesn’t really seem like it was that many. But the amount of extra base hits Myers gives up is just extraordinary.

  30. NC Jason Says:

I really do not know what it is with him – I think he is a real head case. I am just tired of his BS

  31. chris m Says:

good job helping your own cause

  32. NC Jason Says:

So glad he helped himself with getting the bunt down.

  33. NC Jason Says:

Why can Moyer (who has been playing since the umpires first said ‘play ball’) can get bunts down but that fat slob can’t?

  34. Mike T. Says:

    This umpire is absolutely horrible.

  35. Phil Says:

It’s because he’s a head case like you said Jason. Everyone keeps saying they want Burnett. He’s just as big of a head case as Myers. We don’t need another one of those in our starting rotation. Kendrick and Moyer are the epitome of what a pitcher should be if they let runs up or get guys on base. They have so much poise. Maybe Myers should stop thinking he’s a great pitcher and let Moyer teach him how to stop being a head case. Maybe it’ll help him to stop beating his wife too.

  36. chris m Says:

i dont even think he has a hit yet..he might of got his first 1 in his last start

  37. Phil Says:

i think Myers should get the Steve Jeltz award already and it’s only the bottom of the 2nd. I came outside for a smoke because I don’t even want to watch him pitch.

  38. NC Jason Says:

The thing with Moyer and Kendrick is that they are not gifted (as far velocity is concerned) so they had to learn how to pitch. With Myers he wants to throw heat and ‘announce his presence with authority.’ And he has not developed

  39. NC Jason Says:

Myers gives up a homer – there is something that does not happen often.

  40. scot Says:

at least florida is winning, and the mets are in the midst of a comeback. who wanted a stress free september anyway?

  41. Phil Says:

Moyer never had heat. From what I’ve read about him he was throwing 80 mph fastballs when he was 30. He just has a devastating change up and can confuse the hell out of batters. Myers has good breaking balls too. He needs to locate his fastball if he wants to throw it. If he doesn’t learn how to locate it he mine as well not even throw it.

  42. NC Jason Says:

Tim – Open letter to Myers time?

  43. Phil Says:

I quit smoking cigarettes a year ago, Scot, but I find myself buying a pack everytime Myers takes the mound(or when I go out to a bar.) haha I’m so sick of his shit, and it stresses me out. I don’t know why I get so worked up about it. It’s just a game and I’m cheering for a team I’m not even part of.

  44. Phil Says:

I hate Myers even more than I hate Ryan Howard. Myers deserved the open letter more so than Howard.

  45. scot Says:

Phil, if i wasn’t in training for the Philly Marathon, I’d be right with you. Instead, I’m just waiting till I can get home from work (on a sunday) and drink down my last 3 dogfish head ipa’s in rather quick succession.

  46. Matt Says:

For all the good things that the Phillies have done this year, they really made a terrible decision bringing Myers back in the rotation this year. This year is too important not to admit their mistake and send him back there, what a shame. I’m sure Happ, Carasco or Mazonne could pitch better than this every 5 days.

  47. Steve Says:

somebody needs to put Myers out of his misery – it’s a sad day when Adam Eaton is more consistent and reliable.

  48. NC Jason Says:

But Matt brinning in Lidge was one of the best moves the Phils have made in a long long time. If they kept Myers in the pen there would be no need for Lidge

  49. Tim Malcolm Says:

I would love to hear what Coste says about Myers’ stuff today. If he was throwing good pitches or not. Because in my view, he stinks today.

  50. Mike T. Says:

That’s it, I’m done with this guy. I gave him a chance, and this is what he does. He’s done – he’s terrible – get him off my team.

  51. chris m Says:

    he phuking sucks!!!!!!!!!!

  52. Tim Malcolm Says:

    That’s it. He’s done.

  53. scot Says:

just give the team a chance to win brett, thats all anyone is asking. damn it!!!

  54. Steve Says:

Oh for the love of god. His fastball is just terrible today – absolute meatballs.

  55. NC Jason Says:

The Phils should put him on the DL for life

  56. Phil Says:

Figures, I come back to watching Myers let up a 2 run homer. Hopefully the offense can bail him out, but I don’t see that happening. It would be nice to have a 6-3 road trip, but Myers is garbage. He doesn’t even have trade value anymore. At least Howard’s trave value can be that he’s 4th in the league in RBIs.

  57. Steve Says:

I wonder if his poor performance could be connected with the fact they were running him out there every day at the end of last season… he’s not hurt, so the only thing I can think is dead arm.

  58. Phil Says:

Steve, that’s no excuse. I know there’s a pitcher in baseball, forget who, that moved back into the starting rotation from the closer role and is having a tremendous year. I think it’s someone on the Cubs maybe? Smoltz did it a few times in his career(although Myers is no Smoltz.) I don’t even want to hear that excuse, especially now that it’s half way through June.

  59. Matt Says:

NC Jason – I see your point about Lidge. I should clarify and say that I think the move to bring Myers back in the rotation was the right move at the time, however, its apparent that Myers is too much of a selfish headcase not to pitch for the team instead of pitching for his own stats. You can see in his pitching that he has no clue how to adapt to the kind of stuff that he has for the day, its always the same gameplan – rear back and throw as hard as you can.

  60. chris m Says:

well he had a great spring so its recent bs

  61. 85 Says:

This is terrible. He just doesn’t give them a chance to win anymore. You can’t give up extra base hit after extra base hit, homer after homer, every time you take the mound and still warrant a spot in the rotation of a team with this much talent and potential. Myers, more than anyone, is keeping the Phillies from grabbing the East by the throat because they just don’t have a chance to win every fifth day.

  62. NC Jason Says:

Matt I think what both of us are saying is that Myers sucks a big one

  63. Tim Malcolm Says:

And now guys are swinging for the fences. Well, I guess I can go for a run, shower and get ready for Tiger’s big day.

  64. Steve Says:

Clearly Myers has to pitch better – I just can’t explain how he’s throwing his fastball straight down the middle (if not up in the zone) and with such limited velocity – for a guy who was a top closer last year, and who has been decently reliable as a starter (though I’ve never felt he was a top guy starting), it just doesn’t make any sense. I agree though, if they’re going to let him go out there every 5th day, he’s gotta wake the hell up.

  65. NC Jason Says:

Here is a open question – I hear all about how Moyer prepares with video, pitch charts, etc. What is Mayers pregame / time between starts like? Does he put forth the time or does he just sit on his fat ass because he said earlier he does not like to long toss?

  66. Phil Says:

Between his crappy pitching and the Phillies lack of scoring runs for Hamels and Eaton, this will be a rough road to September. I wish I could email Pat Gillick and tell him bring Carrasco up or something. Honestly, at this point, a 4 year old could go out there and throw better than Myers.

  67. Phil Says:

NC Jason, he probably beats his wife.

  68. Steve Says:

haha, i was just going to say that, phil

  69. NC Jason Says:

Probably? I am not sure there is any question about that.

  70. NC Jason Says:

At least the Mets are getting blasted 7-2

  71. Phil Says:

Whoa!!! He got a hit. He’s better at hitting than he is pitching apparently. Maybe he should bat clean-up for Howard and let Howard pitch. That might be better for the both of them.

  72. scot Says:

Good news guys, Maine gave up 5 runs today too!!

Of course that was over 6+ innings, instead of Myers display.

  73. Phil Says:

If Ryan Howard hits a grand slam right here it will restore all of my faith in him, but chances are he’ll K.

  74. NC Jason Says:

    Hey big hit for Howard!

  75. Steve Says:

ryan howard has a pulse – not over yet

  76. scot Says:

Good stuff from Howard again. Nearly single handed he keeps the team in the game.

  77. NC Jason Says:

How clutch has Burrell been this year?!?!

  78. NC Jason Says:

Doesn’t matter Mayers will give up 15 this inning

  79. Phil Says:

haha NC JAson. I don’t even know why he’s in still. What is Charlie thinking? If he can get a 1-2-3 inning I’ll feel very confident considering Victorino can lead off next inning pinch hitting for Myers.

  80. chris m Says:

Pat the Bat: Man or Machine?

  81. Phil Says:

Machine. See, Myers loves to settle down later in the game. It’s unacceptable. If he let up 2 or 3 runs early in the game I think I’d be okay with that, but he let up 5. So unacceptable.

  82. Phil Says:

NOOOOOOOOO!!! Why is Myers still in!!!

  83. 85 Says:

Why the hell did Myers just bat? Let’s hope Chollie’s gut is on point again.

  84. Phil Says:

Howard needs to hit a homer to lead off the next inning for Father’s Day.

  85. Phil Says:

    ANNNNNNNNNND Charlie’s gut wasn’t right.

  86. scot Says:

i’m about ready to bomb texas’s bullpen.

    disgraceful.

  87. NC Jason Says:

    Fantastic defense by Howard

  88. scot Says:

Howard giveth, howard giveth to the other team.

  89. chris m Says:

    phil….its those routine plays

  90. NC Jason Says:

Did Howard just steal a base?

  91. chris m Says:

    rangers BP sucks!

  92. scot Says:

yes he did. he’s a unique player.

  93. scot Says:

seriously, the rangers bullpen is the worst. i’m about ready to throw my monitor out the window here.

  94. Phil Says:

Okay, so I’ll eat my words about the routine ground balls, but not about the speed.

  95. scot Says:

wow, man the rangers made that game interesting. but the mets lose the first of the dh. thank god.

  96. NC Jason Says:

And I shall eat my words about his speed

  97. chris m Says:

    ha…..rangers made that interesting

  98. Phil Says:

Glad we can both come to terms NC Jason. Other than his error he’s had a good series against the Cards. It’s probably because his mommy and daddy are in the stands.

  99. NC Jason Says:

    Would anyone walk Utley here?

  100. Phil Says:

IS La Russa stupid? Utley has more homers against lefties than anyone in the majors. I’m smelling a game winning homer right here.

  101. Phil Says:

Howard has been hot this series, he’s not gonna walk Utley to get to Howard, also he woulda walked Utley with the last pitcher if he was gonna walk him.

  102. chris m Says:

    o shit!!!!>…….

  103. chris m Says:

    o ya

  104. NC Jason Says:

Best ab of the game! Nicely done Howard

  105. scot Says:

If only howard had a bigger glove, he’d be player of the game.

  106. chris m Says:

thats a little cred to howard…never seen him that patient…..his last AB he swung at 2 pitches in the dirt

  107. chris m Says:

    hahahhahahahha

  108. Phil Says:

Does anyone else think this game is the biggest nailbiter of the season thus far?

  109. scot Says:

    hell yeah, burrell!!!

  110. chris m Says:

man or machine…..dont pull burell! his run doesnt mean enough

  111. Phil Says:

This sucks too, I’m out of beer. Myers forced me to drink it too fast.

  112. chris m Says:

    fuck jenkins

  113. Phil Says:

3rd time they left the bases loaded…I shouldn’t be biting my nails off right now.

  114. Geoff Says:

Great teams dont leave runners on base with this much frequency. IF they want to go deep into the playoffs one of the things theyre going to have to learn how to do, among the other pitching issues, is to STOP punching out with runners on base. Just reach out there and flick the ball into the shallow outfield and you have the lead now.

Also, can we all agree now that bretty myers is NOT a starting pitcher? this is a weak, candy-ass, phony lineup without albert pujols and he gave up 6 runs. thats garbage.

Can he find some utility role in the bullpen when we trade for another starting pitcher in like two or three weeks? i dunno maybe, i think you could get a better starting pitcher, maybe one under team control for two years, if you throw brett myers into the deal to sweeten the pot with a package with him being that teams new closer. the indians need a closer…

  115. chris m Says:

do we still want penny…bc im sure we could do a one for one…. thats a jk

  116. chris m Says:

    wtf coste….i want ruiz!!!!!!!hahah

  117. 85 Says:

You have gotta love Greg Dobbs… get him home!

  118. NC Jason Says:

If you are going to bunt why not pinch hit Brunlett? He can handel the bat better?

  119. chris m Says:

    well he got it down

  120. chris m Says:

i remember franklin as the madson….ALWAYS giving up homeruns

  121. chris m Says:

    bull shit

  122. chris m Says:

    nice job rollins..you fucking blow

  123. 85 Says:

Molina didn’t tag Bruntlett, bad call. Doesn’t look good though, looks like he got knocked out cold.

  124. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Brunt was never tagged there.

  125. chris m Says:

he wasnt out cold bc he raid=sed the ball a little after he went down

  126. chris m Says:

situational hitting will probaly cost us 2 games in a row

  127. Gavin Says:

why is the game delayed? Watching on the computer.

  128. chris m Says:

catcher was getting carried off on a stretcher

  129. Gavin Says:

    Ok.

Hey Werth’s up…….2 outs 9th inning…..great time for a bunt……. No one is expecting it.

  130. Phil Says:

GOD DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!!!!!! How many times are they going to leave the bases loaded? I’m sick of this shit.

  131. NC Jason Says:

4th FUCKING TIME WE HAVE LEFT THE BASES LOADED!

  132. NC Jason Says:

    Mets losing already

  133. Phil Says:

Good piece of hitting Rollins and Utley. At least it’s Durbin pitching and not Gordon.

  134. Phil Says:

Oh great, here comes Tom Gordon…game.

  135. Phil Says:

    WTF!!!

  136. Phil Says:

Is anyone else just as frustrated with Utley as Myers right now??????????

  137. 85 Says:

Are you kidding me? That was Mets-esque.

  138. Tim Malcolm Says:

And another bad loss. Chad Durbin should have been pitching in the 10th. No excuse.

  139. philspan Says:

You can’t blame this loss only on Tom Gordon. Utley screwed up the first throw in that inning, the Phillies left 15 men on base, Coste swung at a pitch that would have been ball four and a run, avoiding extra innings and giving the Phillies the win, and Myers gave up 6 runs in 6 innings but is still our “ace”.

The Phillies are still in first place by 3 games, there is plenty of time left in the season for the Phillies to make up this game Hopefully they will play well at home in Interleague play.

  140. Phil Says:

Leaving 15 men on base is despicable. 4 times with bases loaded. There is no excuse for how bad they played the past 2 days along with the 2 games in Florida. Chase better get his shit together because that was 2 games in a row where he coulda helped us win and didn’t. As for Rollins and Howard…glad to see them hitting the ball. And then there’s Myers. WTF is that guys problem?!?!?!?!?! I don’t even know.

  141. Rob Cowie Says:

I’m reminded of ‘for who, for what’ during that last play

  142. Geoff Says:

Myers is injured..in his dome. Thats his problem. He melts down and starts hyperventilating and leaves balls over the plate. The broadcasters try to brighten the mood up by being like, oh well th ephillies are used to coming back theyre a late inning team and so forth…

    guess what?

that shit isnt going to work in the playoffs. if they do this shit in the playoffs and leave men on base like that they WILL be swept by WHOEVER they play. this is professional fucking baseball and you leave the bases loaded 4 fucking times!!!!!! they need a new hitting instructor or something. if they cant fix that then you need to get someone in there who can hit in a tight situation.

i looked at ryan howards stats, and his HR and RBI are fine. his problem is he whiffs too much which fucks up his average.

but im tired of seeing them trot brett myers out there. that guy sucks as a starter. he has no mental discipline. they really REALLY need a number two starter. how theyre going to get him with their farm system without leaving it bare? i dont know.

  143. Phil Says:

Surprisingly enough it was Howard getting the job done today. It’s sad when not even Chase Utley can get it done. The whole team is in a slump.

  144. Greg V. Says:

Throw Myers in the pen and start Dubrin. Or bring up Happ or Carasco! Something different has to happen, because we are not winning any games in this spot! I don’t care if he pitched the pitch that won us the NL East last year, he isn’t helping anyone this season except the rare occasion where he pitches good.

  145. Phil Says:

Don’t bring Durbin into the rotation. He’s too awesome in the pen. Myers needs to get traded to someone that needs a closer. The Brewers need a closer. How about this trade if they fall out of contention. Howard and Myers for Fielder and Sheets, or better yet Howard, Myers, Werth, and Cardenas for Sheets, Braun, and Fielder? I know that would never happen, but how awesome would that be?

  146. Phil Says:

Also, I agree with bringing Carrasco up. That kid seems to have good stuff. My friend just told me that his brother told him that the Yankees want Myers really bad as a set-up man. I don’t know how true that is, but maybe we can dump him for a couple of prospects.

  147. chris m Says:

brauns not going anywhere… hes signed…

  148. chris m Says:

i called it at the beguinning of the game and agian later… situational hitting has cost us 2 in a row…..rollins has equal blame as utley

  149. Phil Says:

    I can dream, can’t I? haha

Anyway, more of an update about Myers going to the Yankees. My friends brother lives in NYC, and he listens to their version of 610 WIP, and they’ve been saying for over a week now that the Yankees are close to locking up Myers. Now, we all know that it’s probably a rumor, but we could probably snag some pretty decent prospects plus a salary dump.

  150. Phil Says:

At least Rollins got hits. haha That whole team fucked up on situational hitting today other than Burrell and Howard.

  151. Geoff Says:

What would they get for Myers form the yankees? i dont know if the yankees have any good prospects. do they have a near-mlb ready starting pitcher? would they give up phil hughes or ian kennedy?

id ask for an mlb-ready starting pitching prospect for brett myers. maybe you get another hitting prospect to throw in AAA for next season if their lucky. its worth it to make some room for whoever that starter they go for at the trade deadline will be. is hughes doing better in AAA? hes not the answer right now but itd help to get a good prospect and make room for a REAL number tow guy.

it does sound too good doesnt it? we can unload brett myers and make room for our savior, whoever that may be.
