Gameday: Red Sox (45-29) At Phillies (42-31)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, June 18, 2008 12:11 PM
After Jon Lester baffled the Phils yesterday, the Phils face a rubber game against the Red Sox today at Citizens Bank Park. I’m more confident about this one than last night, that’s for sure, but the offense needs to get in gear. Chase Utley is in the midst of an 0-for-16, and Ryan Howard had his usual game-after-a-big-game 0-fer (If Howard has at least two hits in a game, the next game he is a combined 8-for-51 [.156].)
All in all, the O needs to step up today with Kyle Kendrick on the mound. He’s usually good for the Kendrickian start (6 IP, 3 ER), so the plan is to hit Sox starter Justin Masterson early and often. He’s a good prospect, and they salivate about him up here in New England.
It’s a BP special. The Phils are hitting .251 in day games this season. Manny Ramirez, who got an early benching yesterday because of a sore hamstring, is not in the lineup today.
Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (6-2) 4.54 ERA
Red Sox: Justin Masterson (3-1) 2.90 ERA
Gametime: 1:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 73, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Dobbs, Ruiz, Kendrick

Your gameday beer: To round out this Philly-beer series, we go with Yuengling and Yuengling Light. Not a bad light macrobrew, it’s a little watery, but for that special gal in your life — you know, the skinny one with the Hollywood Tan who giggles at almost everthing you say, that’s if you’re a guy with huge shoulder muscles and tight t-shirts from Diesel, and he drinks nothing but Red Bulls, and he’s a huge fan of “Boiler Room” and “Fight Club” but can’t appreciate the self-deprecating hatred for commercialization that Chuck Palahniuk brought to the story, so he just instead owns the posters and they sit right above his bed, probably beause he has wet dreams about Brad Pitt and Vin Diesel and Edward Norton every night — it’s the right beer. Eat some buffalo wings with the beer today.
Go Phillies!

Someone tell me why Ruiz is starting today.
Nice beer rant.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:24 pm
Ruiz always catches Kendrick…some pitchers prefer certain catchers. Hamels, Kendrick, and Eaton prefer Ruiz and Myers and Moyer prefer Coste. I’m actually kind of shocked Coste didn’t start last night.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
I understand the pitcher catcher preference. Ruiz just sucks.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
ruiz again? something has to wrong with coste for him not to be starting the day game after the nite game…chuck makes me wonder if he’s sane ALOT
June 18th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Coste should’ve gone last night, absolutely. For some reason Stewie was in my head, so my beer rant was very Stewie-ish.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
The french fries part is the only thing I don’t understand.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Yeah, I was stumped on that one, actually.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Yea, Coste should absolutely have started last night… And Yuengling is one of my top beers but Yuengling Light is just terrible. Way too watered down.
June 18th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
great summer beer: Leinenkugel’s Varity Pack
June 18th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
Great summer beer: Allagash White
June 18th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Yo Tim, I was expecting tight t-shirt guy for a New York series. For the Boston series, I would expect an “I went slummin once too” kinda guy a la Good Will Hunting.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:13 pm
Ahhh, of course. Well, Sully, who talks as if he’s the biggest shit in the world, is all about drinking Bud Lights, and he wears t-shirts and jeans cause it’s cool to wear them, but it ain’t too formal, ya know, but he has his going out clothing, which is always a shirt and a tie, which he usually wears when he goes to Foxwoods, always doublin down on 11 but he bets with like one chip each time, cause hes a pussy, but he won’t make you think that; oh, and he drinks Dunkin’ Donuts a lot too, and goes to Stop n Shop.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
Great start, Kyle. Just great.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
Ugh.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
This one is done. 3 series in a row. 90 wins seems like a pipe dream.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
You see, when we say that they dont have enough to win the world series. this is what we are talking about.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
what a day ruiner. Now I have to turn my attention to work to get my mind off of this slop, yay!
June 18th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
Thanks, Tim! Much better…
Awful start, but let’s give the offense a chance before we call it a season.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:20 pm
this team falls behind early ALL THE TIME. you cant win the world series when you do that. starting pitching….
June 18th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Yep, this is not a championship team - this series defines that fact.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
hey theykll make the playoffs they just cant beat this team in the world series until the phillies improve personel and performance wise
June 18th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
they are the definition of a fraud team. aka a team thats good and makes the playoffs but isnt good enough to win a championship = fraud
June 18th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
At least they saved us the time of having to keep up with them today. God almighty. We’re one of the better teams in the NL, but I think BOS has proven that that doesnt mean much these days.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I guess games only last one inning now. Relax people!
June 18th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
4-1. Nice RBI Howard.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Oh for the days of a good ol’ Kendrickian Start.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
MUCH better, Kyle.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
How about a 3 run homer by Ruiz here to bring us back even…
June 18th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
We can only dream, Julie, we can only dream.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:39 pm
PANIC! at the BallPark…….. jesus christ people… its 4-1… the Red Sox are the defending champs and the best team in baseball over the past 5years. We beat the hell out of them on Monday. Last night we lost 3-0. and we are down today, You guys all hide under your kitchen tables when there is a thunderstorm too?? christ…
Even IF they lose today…they are still a legit team.. and anyone that says otherwise doesn’t know jack shit about baseball.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
step one to ruiz totally redeeming himself. check.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Itll be nice if they come back and win. But you CANT get behind all the time like they seem to do almost all the time. thats our point. thats unacceptable
June 18th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
they might be able to light up this kid masterson, but what about josh beckett or john lackey?
June 18th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
The Phils have holes man. Thats all we’re saying.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Don M, I’m sorry, but you’re clueless.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Dobbs looks so flat when he starts.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Kendrick has to lay a bunt down here. No questions asked, but them over and hope J Roll and single.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Well if we matchup with Cole Hamels vs. Josh Beckett…. I think we can still get more than 2 runs against Beckett… which would have given us the WIN.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Kendrick needs to walk here.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:47 pm
Even better than a homerun! I’m surprised Ruiz didn’t swing anyway.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Why does Mike T even pay attention to the Phillies if he is 110% sure that they will lose every game??
June 18th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
please tell me he got the bunt down.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:49 pm
That’s a pop out throw to second for a double play. Inning over. They can’t convert simple crap.
UGH.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
nice job Kyle, way to help your own cause. you bone.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
Don M….Paul…..Julie…..I love your optimism…..but I’ve watched about a bazillion hours of baseball in my life and if the Phils win this game I’ll send all 3 of you a six pack of your favorite beers. You dont give up 4 runs in the first then pop up a unt into a DP. That shits just unacceptable.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
Alright… but even if they lose this game… what does that mean?? They are still one of the top 3 teams in the NL.. if the miss the playoffs this year, then we can bitch. If they make the playoffs.. they have a shot to get to the world series… and then, who knows.
Everything about baseball is long..each game, each season.. so when people start crying about every run the other team scores… its frustrating. The Phillies (without the help of Utley) beat the Red Sox handily on Monday night.. which shows you how good the can be..
June 18th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Agreed. It is always important just to get to the playoffs. After that anything can happen. Hey I said it last week. We just have to survive this tough stretch into the beginning of July. If we can do that then we’ll be in great position.
This team has alot going for it. Alot of holes to worry about too.
June 18th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Hey…..trying to lighten things up a bit. Who would you put on an “All-Phillies Killer Team”?
I’d have to start with Jorge Cantu this year. JD Drew might have to be added to that list.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
No, if they DONT WIN THE WORLD SERIES we can bitch. i dont give a crap about the playoffs. just win the world series. thats all i care about.
to do that they need to improve a LOT.
yes theyre tops in the NL and theyll make the playoffs and may even get far. but i want to see more out of this team. a world series caliber team comes in, when the champs are in town and have evened the series at 1-1, and PULVERIZES them.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
If all you care about is winning the World Series.. there is a good chance that you will be highly disappointed this year… looks at the Cubbies and Red Sox fans.. sometimes it takes YEARS to win one. Phillies have a pretty solid team, and they should have a good chance to contend for the next few years.. they are by no means the favorite to win the world series this year.. but neither were the D’Backs, Marlins, or White Sox when they won it
June 18th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Mike Lowell has always hurt the Phillies.. David Wright seems to play well against us..
June 18th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
and that’s that. good night everyone.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
its funny how i get yelled at for criticizing this team when we win bc i could see were still fat from a championship team…but now looks whose right
June 18th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
IT HAS BEEN YEARS SINCE THIS CITY HAS A CHAMPIONSHIP
we need to hold them to the high standards of that.
also, theres some impending free agents on this team and its likley tjhey wont all be back. what if they go cheap on us again or do something stupid and they dont replace that production? what about lidge, burrell, etc.? all you can see is the core of the team. sure thats good but even some of those guys might not be here. im referring to howard and burrell.
there is no better time than the present to win a championship. they have all but 2 or so pieces. they almost have the whoel puzzle. get it done now.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
far*
June 18th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
this team just isnt for real right now in terms of a title contender.
if we take a lax approach and say oh well they have itme then the ownership will behave that way. if they notice the fans are pissed off and restless, then they might do something.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I like Jamie Moyer and Kyle Kendrick a lot, but the past two nights are Exhibits A and B of why we need to add a top-flight starter to this rotation.
We can get by in the regular season with Moyer, Kendrick and Eaton because they can get by against mediocre lineups and the offense can provide good run support against mediocre pitchers, but October is a whole different ballgame. You need to be able to stop GOOD lineups, and I don’t have the confidence in anyone in our rotation other than Hamels to do that right now.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
don’t flatter yourself geoff.
the idea of the ownership doing something because a dozen people on a (more than just a) blog are pissed off is a much higher level of delusion than thinking the phils are world series contenders.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
the playoffs is about pitching and getting hot at the right time(rockies)…we could get hot but we DONT have pitching…our 1-2-3 punch for the NLDS is hamels(great)-moyer-eaton or kendrick(ha)
June 18th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
eaton and kendrick are not number 3’s and moyer is not a number 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!our pitching needs help
June 18th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
obviusly you didnt extrapolate the necessary scope of that
June 18th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
geoff, talk scope all you want, you’re still delusional.
the park is selling out, ratings are sky high, and people are talking phils, REALLY talking phils for the first time in several years. thinking that acting pissed off or restless is gonna kill all that energy is foolish.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
its great that the only time we ould beat great teams is when hamels pitches…
June 18th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
Moyer will actually be really good in the playoffs. He’s a big game pitcher, has good post-season numbers, and has good enough stuff to get it done.
As for this game…you know they threw in the towel when they bring Condrey in. He let up a run of course. There’s not coming back from this. We’ll lose 10-3. Holy shit Howard made a good catch. Anyway, back to the point. This is BoSox light. Manny, Papi, and Youk aren’t in the line-up. God only knows what this would be like if they were.
As for Phillies killers Wright, Lowell, Cantu, Zimmerman, the Nationals starting rotation, and CHIPPER JONES!!!
June 18th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
kendrick is a number 5 starter and on this team is a 3…hampionship team huh?
June 18th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I HATE the nationals starting rotation!!!
June 18th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I think we all agree that they need starting pitching help.. even if Myers turns it around.. they still need help to be considered “favorites” for a World Series. But its not worth trading your entire farm system for one guy… unless its guaranteed he will win it for you. C.C Sabathia is your best chance, and he started the season out VERY poorly… to give up your top 5 prospects for him might not be such a great move.
Their best hope is that Carasco, Bastardo, Savery, etc.. turn out to be studs. Nobody knows if they will or won’t .. but if they are decent, we can bring them up and the Phillies will have them under control for a number of years.. the way that Utley, Hamels, Rollins, Howard, were/are under our control.
Once you have to start paying a few players $10+ million per season, you loose the ability to make moves.. the Yankees can’t sell off their bad moves, and now don’t want to trade their prospects for quick-fixes like Santana, Sabathia, because the way to get better in baseball now is through developing your young talent, and holding on to them..
June 18th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
ok fine. if you think thats good enough for you then so be it. thats not good enough. the flyers sell out all the time and that doesnt take away my demand for a championship.
OBVIOUSLY people will still go and that wont change anything. but acting like a deluded fool on medication saying all is well doesnt work either. you shouldve heard the interview the yesterday with montgomery. he understands that its crunch time and if they fail this year then people will be REALLY pissed off.
make no mistake the pennant is there for the taking if they have what it takes. but do they?
June 18th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
moyer should not be a number two for any team in this league!
June 18th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
Noone talks about good defense wins you championships. Look at the plays the Red Sox are playing. They don’t miss routine plays at 1st base in the bottom of the 9th against a crappy Cardinals team.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
don m im with you on the piont of keeping prospets.no need to trade the farm for a rental….all thius should of been handeled in the offseason…that gillicks fault…lohse for cheap at the end would have put us in good shape
June 18th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
youre right about that don m. its abetter idea to still go after that number two guy without giving up too much. but derek lowe can help you win a championship, guys like that. you dont have to gve up a lot for them and hell fit nicely in this rotation
June 18th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
This Masterson kid doesn’t even look good. He looks like a really crappy pitcher. This inconsistent offense is pissing me off. Utley has been so streaky this year. There is noone that is consistent in that line up besides maybe Burrell.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
This one has been a hoot so far.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
Q: Are we a good team right now?
A: No - we’re just not.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
well burell started off hot and went cold so he hasnt even been consistant the whnole year….the only consistant player this year has been ruiz…just on the bad side
June 18th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
Mike T…we are a good team, we’re not a great team. To say we’re not a good team is implying that you think we’re a bad team, and that’s a bit absurd. God, if we’re a bad team I guess the 93 Phillies were a bad team too and they got to the World Series, and we’re a much better team than the 93 team.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
True or False: We’re just not a good team right now.
True.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
moyer is not a good number 2 starter in the playoffs…he has 29 carreer postseason innings in 22 years… who knows what he can do…on any given nite we know he eligable to get bombed or go 7innings giving up 2 runs….
June 18th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
17. Complete the following sentence:
“The Philadelphia Phillies are ________________.”
a. very solid
b. a complete team
c. just not a good team right now
d. championship contenders
Correct Answer: c) just not a good team right now
June 18th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
When do you ever see Moyer get bombed in big game situations? Mike T. you’re right the Phillies have never been a good team. Even the 80’s Phillies weren’t that good of a team considering we have better numbers than them. The only difference between the 80’s Phillies and the 08 Phillies is Steve Carlton.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
I can’t take it…. I’m with you Phil! The inconsistency and utter lack of hits with RISP is unacceptable. So many blown opportunities due to the inability to execute.
The Phillies only have 1 hit. That’s all they have is 1 goddamn hit (against this bum). (to quote Major League)
June 18th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
why is mike t’s name red?
June 18th, 2008 at 2:43 pm
E. National League East champs 2 years in a row. They’ll be lucky to get to the NLCS.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
Mike, I’d go with A, C and D.
Also, Chris, Mike’s name is red because he listed a Web site link.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
Ruiz will ground into a double play.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
phil hes pitched ONE big game for us…postseason and 1 more to finish the regular season…your going off 2 games!!!!!!!! he has 29 big innings(postseason) in his LIFE…not big enough sample size to say hes a big game pitcher…phil you agree he not a number 2 though?!?!?
June 18th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
o thanks tim
June 18th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
HOLY SHIT RUIZ GOT A HIT!!!
June 18th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
No, he’s #3. Moyer pitched great for us down the stretch last year. He’s better in big situations than he is on everyday plays.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
phil the games over what do you expect…the guys a jk…and that big game to fininsh the regular season was agianst the nationals when they were already packing their bags
June 18th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
We can still win this…I know that’s a lot of optimism, but our offense is that good and this guy Masterson isn’t good. They figured him out.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
ya hes a number three…but right now hes our number 2 in the postseason…thats not good… im not for trading the farm for a guy but we need a number 2… lowe is not the answer for a number two but hell fit as a 3…b ut i think the yankees need him so theyll give up a lot for him…this should of all been handled in the offseason…thanks pat!
June 18th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
I’m just trying to get some laughs. Geez, sorry for being so highly spirited during a blowout game like this.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
And what about the game against the Marlins on Thursday? Or the game against the Rockies in the playoffs?
3 1 2.43 5 5 0 0 0 — 29.2 22 8 8 2 1 6 19
numbers in the playoffs. I trust him.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
The first thing and the common thing in every sports is that playing a match with true heart and I think this has happened wrong. According to me Red Sox has played the best.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
0 for 19??? What do you guys thing?
June 18th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
yo, moyers a 3. hes NOT EVEN close to being a 2
June 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
FUCK YOU CHASE UTLEY!!! Way to blow a rally. Bench his ass.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
Ok chase time to hit a homerun and make it a game again
June 18th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
thankyou geoff….hes pitched 29 innings phil….3 years in the postseaon in 22 years that is not a big enough sample size!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
June 18th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
fuck utley(just for his slump) and victorino
June 18th, 2008 at 2:57 pm
It’s official, someone has finally agreed that this is not a good team right now - and that someone happens to be Mr. Tim Malcolm.
June 18th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
phil i dont understand why you defend howard when hes in slumps but go nuts on utley who has carried this team during howards slumps…when i go nuts on howard you say look at his rbis…so this is what i gotta say to you….look at utleys rbi’s
June 18th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Chris M I never backed Howard up, that was a bunch of other people. I expect it of Howard, not Utley. Howard his also never gone 0 for 19, and his numbers with runners in scoring position are better than Utley’s this year.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
Kyle Lohse wanted 4 years and $40 million… the Phillies were trying to offer him like 2 years.. if they weren’t stubbourn, they could have signed him, but they had already passed on him by the time he wento to St Louis.
WHO WAS GILLICK SUPPOSED TO GET IN THE OFF-SEASON????????
June 18th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
im not defending utley but im just lettign you see the other sides of things
June 18th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
they offeres him 3 years 21 million and he rejected it and they said screw you youre blackballed to him.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
They got Lidge…and kept Romero… they have the best bullpen in the NL. EVERYONE thought Myers was solid going into the season, so you can’t fault them there… Moyer is a decent #3, and just last week we were all talking about him making a bid for an All-Star appearance if he can get to 10 wins by then… Kendrick did a good job last year, and Eaton has like 4 quality starts in a row…
They would have to give up a lot to get Derrick Lowe too since EVERY team wants starting pitching…
June 18th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
don m get your facts straight you gillick lover….lohse was avialable in spring training for four mil and gillick didnt want him and now look what he would have offered
June 18th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
don m are you gillicks boyfriend bc you love to defend this prick
June 18th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
i think they took it personally or something because they acted really shady after that. after he didnt resign, THEY MADE ABSOLUTELY NO EFFORT THAT WE KNOW OF TO ACQUIRE ANOTHER SOLID STARTER
June 18th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
too much pitching doesnt hurt…we should have lohse right now
June 18th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
They shouldn’t have gotten Jenkins. I think Werth could be an everyday player. Shoulda just went for another starter like Loshe, not that Loshe is a number 2. We’d still have 2 #3s a #4 and a #5.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Chris M… if you could read… you would have seen this, “if they weren’t stubbourn, they could have signed him, but they had already passed on him by the time he wento to St Louis.
*****
They should have grabbed Lohse when there was a chance to get him for a year or two… they were right to not sign him for 4 years…
WHAT OTHER PITCHER SHOULD THEY HAVE SIGNED???? Because Lohse is a career .500 guy..
June 18th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Geoff, they went after Bedard. They offered Victorino among a lot other players for Bedard.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
geoff i think gillick took it personal…and didnt show any interest when he lowered his demands…we knew we need more starters eventually…remember last year and we made Zero effort asfter trying to resign lohse….
June 18th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
Yeah, I do agree with Don M that Loshe is just having a career year. I don’t think he’s as good as he’s been pitching. Pitchers do have career years.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Gillick got us to the playoffs for the first time in 15 years you douchebag…
You don’t want to give credit for getting us the best bullpen and the best bench in the entire NL..
You just proved to everyone on here that you don’t know dick about the game of baseball… go back to playing XBOX, where im sure you created yourself and you are the star of the Phillies. And you can tell all your friends how awesome you are
June 18th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
actually, all i heard about bedard was media speculation,. i dont ever remember reading anything that said that they offered that for him. i think they sort of just said that after the fact to make themselves look good
June 18th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
livan, sliva which we wouldnt have got but we didnt make an effort, saito, leiber, with more guys…benson wasnt the answer to our problems
June 18th, 2008 at 3:13 pm
I figured Don M to be about 40, 45 years old. Then he used the word “douchebag” — nice.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
lohse is having a career yhear but it could of been with us
June 18th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
dude, take it easy don m.
if you knew anything about baseball youd also know that ed wade build the core of this team. gillick filled in the peripherals. lidge is obviuosly clutch but that wasnt enough. ed wade was TERRIBLE too and he still built this core.
gillick is OK. not great, not terrible.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Kyle Lohse …. career 71-76, 4.75 ERA…
Adam Eaton… career 66-59, 4.69 ERA…
after giving Eaton that much money for 3 years, you can see why they didn’t want to go crazy with Lohse. Once they had a chance to get him for a year or two.. they should have… but they didn’t …so let’s move on, cause he sure isn’t the difference between winning a World Series or not !
June 18th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
gillick got us to the postseaon? ou bullpen was the best last year? how bout our offense dominating and our pitching coming through in big situations…gillick didnt do that…the best bullpen this year…he signed durbin as a starter and is now having a career year he couldnt of predicted that…lidge career year…last year rowand had a career year…gillick hasnt done shit
June 18th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
gillick made some bad trades and signings…garcia… and eaton for as much as he gave him…great moves gillick
June 18th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
We can all solve our problems on agreeing on one simple quote, “We are just not a good team right now.”
Can we all agree?
June 18th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
True Chris M. I wish Loshe was having his career year with us. I wish we were like the Sox and horded starting pitching. They have Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Colon, Masterson, Wakefield, Schilling, and Bucholz. If someone goes down, like Dice-K they have a competent replacement. They have all #1-#3 type starters. It’s sick. Most people in baseball have to struggle to get #3 guys.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
gillick didnt build this team that got to the postseason…get your tongue out of gillicks ass then you can see
June 18th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
this is crazy…this team wont have a chance in the playoffs without a number two startter. period.
this red sox team hasnt even hit their stride yet. theyve got tons of people slumping or injured and they humiliated this team today and yesterday.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
phil…the red sox didnt trade for santana thats how they have these guys…thats the new baseball…if we didnt trade for garcia who knows
June 18th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
Nope Mike T. I can’t agree considering we have 3 of the top 25 best players in the game right now and 1 of the top 10 best pitchers and the best closer.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Actually, I’ll just say 4 of the top 50 best players.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
I said something similar earlier Geoff. We’re facing BoSox light right now. Papi, Manny, and Youk aren’t even in the lineup. Dice-K is on the DL.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
good point chris. thats why they cant give up carrasco or guys liek that to get their starter. its gonna be tough, yes. gillick will feel pressured to do a last hurrah and he will. i hope it doesnt wipe out the farm system. just please dont move carrasco or marson or golson or savery. tahts all i ask. and resign whoever the guy is that you trade for.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Silva last year had a 13-14 record, with an ERA close to 5… this year, his numbers are about the same as Brett Myers…
I don’t love Gillick by any means… until we have new owners, it doesn’t matter who the GM is because they are always going to have their hands tied, and not be able to get the Santanas, and Sabathias… Gillick if anything, has done a good job… people need to realize that we are closer than most teams to the World Series.. we all want to get there…the owners do too.. (I think)
June 18th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
don m how bout you give us eatons numbers as a philly…the era might be a little differant….not a good signing for the money we gave him…period
June 18th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
exactly phil. this team cant play with guys like that yet. theyre not ready yet. they ahve to break out in the second half of this season and really hit a stride. monday night we wouldve faced beckett instead of colon. we wouldve been shut out.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
we are close to a world series but we were at the same piont with wade…we got hot at the end of last year and the mets choked….thats not gillick…
June 18th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
No Don M the owners just want to line their pockets by tricking a majority of Phillies fans into thinking we’re a great team. In all honesty the diehard fans know we’re not, and the diehard fans are the ones sitting on a message board complaining about how bad they are. The other 2 million Phillies fans think this team will win the WS.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:25 pm
we are closer don, ths correct. thats not when you rest on your laurels. tahts when you work extra hard and go the extra mile. this organization has no concept of that yet. they need to find it soon.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
ahhh….what we would all do to have Gavin Floyd and Justin Germano back right now? We released Germano! WTF???
June 18th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
thats is so true phil, i couldnt have put it much better. theyre better than most of the nl but not a real contender. they HAVE tricked people into thinking that we are a contender.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Rally time!!!
June 18th, 2008 at 3:29 pm
geoff ypu got a ton of knowledge from realistic stand point then most of us…we need that number two with keepiung the key guys on the farm and i cant see it hapening…and on gillick that abreu trade didnt do us any favors other then unloading salery…they won on that…and didnt he throw in the towel after that on us…he didnt even know his own team…we came back and almost made the playoffs
June 18th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
June 18th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
geranamo was one of our top prospects we didnt release him we traded him and he was an all star in double a
June 18th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Chris M clearly has homosexual tendencies… always talking about guys with boyfriends…and tounges in asses…
But besdies that, Im sure he’s a great guy.. he obviously loves the Phillies and the moves they make…
So Gillick didn’t have anything to do with the following…all which were HUGE last year.. Brett Myers to the bullpen, Kyle Kendrick call-up, the signing of Dobbs, the signing of Werth, the trade for Aaron Rowand, the trade for Jamie Moyer..
you guys are right, he had NO IMPACT on this team. I can’t believe I ever gave him any credit..
June 18th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Let’s face it, the AL teams are far superior to the NL teams. The pitching in the AL HAS to be better because they have to face 9 hitters instead of 8. The AL has more patient hitters, therefore AL pitchers have to be more deceiving. They can work on being better pitchers because they don’t have to spend time learning how to bunt, run the bases, swing a bat, etc. Hopefully we can be a fluke like the Cards who should have gotten owned in the WS in 06.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
June 18th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Here we go Phillies, here we go (CLAP - CLAP)
June 18th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
he tradefd gavin floyd for garcia, when the white sox SAID garcia was injured. they fleeced the hell out of us. that was an ed wade trade it was that bad
June 18th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Hansen is shook. Gotta get some ribs.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
PETE HAPPY, HERE WE GO!!!!!!!!
June 18th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
RALLY TIME!!!
June 18th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
brett myers to the bull pen wasnt him…dobbs and werth helped us get tp the playoffs but wernt the key figures…kendrick was good and moyer was good…but what about all the bads
June 18th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Top of the lineup, here we go - about to get 10 runs this inning then turn it over to the pen.
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
Let’s go Phillies (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)
June 18th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
and helms florished as an everyday 3rd basemen
June 18th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
then, then gillick traded helms for one dollar only to have him come back and beat us in one game ALREADY thi syear
June 18th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
and gillick has loaded our farm system up
June 18th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Manny Delcarmen, oh man what a bum. Need to hit this guy, he is terrible.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
were paying helms right now…the marlins only have to pay next year…so we traded him to beat us why were paying him
June 18th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Really Chris? Who did we get in return for him? I don’t remember him being traded for anyone. I seem to remember him being released and claimed off waivers by the Padres.
Phil that’s hilarious about the Cardinals. I was thinking the same thing. All that matters is you hit a stride and have a little luck. Who knows what can happen after the ‘06 series?
June 18th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
well at least the score is resopectable now
June 18th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
rick i meant gio gonzalez io got mixed up
June 18th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Shouldn’t Vic bunt here? No?
June 18th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
fuck geranomo
June 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
manny delcarmen, as stated, is SLOP! smoke this fool.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
i meant gio was one of our best prospects and he was an all star with us in the minors
June 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Good job Vic…
June 18th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Vic was 0-2 already, he needs to bunt there, move em over, get 2 RISP.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
I swear if the middle of this lineup doesn’t get any runs….
June 18th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
0-20 gj…
June 18th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
up, the “little retard rears his ugly face again”
June 18th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
bad situational hitting…should have had a sac fly already and moved them over
June 18th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
Horrible, absolutely horrible.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
come on howard
June 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
And Howards K’s…at least he does have 1 RBI this game. The bottom of the line up is producing.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
And naturally Howard strikes out to ruin the rally.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Utley and Howard are killing this team right now.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
AND they fail AGAIN and leave EVEN MORE RISP!!!!!!!
June 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I’m glad that they at least made the last couple of innings interesting. But dang… what a way to kill a rally.
June 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm
thats GARBAGE this RISP problem has gone on far too long. fire the hitting coach
June 18th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
Utley choked twice with RISP and has been choking really bad in general lately. 0 for 20. How many times in that 20 at bats did he have runners in scoring position?
June 18th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
another tease by this team…when you think were getting blown out they lure you back only to kick you in the nuts
June 18th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
This game could be/should be tied right now.
June 18th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
well, then the starting pticher gives up 4 RUNS in the first inning these things will happen
June 18th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
that would of been fine if only he could kepp us in the game and he couldnt
June 18th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
yep.
June 18th, 2008 at 4:15 pm
Looks like the ump wants to go home.
June 18th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
my gamecast says were in the bottom of the 8th with coste up for the past half hour?
June 18th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
the mlb.com one was bad today i switched to the fox one for today
June 18th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
one thing i noticed about the red sox that sans josh beckett, francona uses this bullpen a lot
June 18th, 2008 at 4:21 pm
and so ends a well deserved loss
June 18th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
the phillies AS OF NOW are a fraud. they might do better against the angels they will win this division but theyre a fraud
June 18th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
kendrick pitched bad to a weakened linup today…he should of been able to keep us in the game but instaed he gave up 1 or 2 too many
June 18th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
They’ll do worse against the Angels. The Angels have even better pitching.
June 18th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
they angels have pitching i envy and want to get our hands on
June 18th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
howaard holds that key but i think wait for the end of the year. anybody change their minds on that after seeing that preformance agianst a good team
June 18th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
The Phils are a fraud? Wow… this site gets negative when they get into a slump. If they lose say 5 in row, I’d get the suicide watch started up in Philly! YIKES!!!
June 18th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
I didn’t have my “A” game today, but I would like to thank all of you for sticking with us!
June 18th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
well weve played 3 good teams in a row and weve lost alll three series…before we were playing shitty teams and winning by slim margians witha couple good wins in there…this shows we need just a tad more to be legit contenders…
June 18th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
The Phillies are a good team. they will make the playoffs and win the division. they are not good enough to win the world series at all as of right now.
