Gamenight: Angels (43-30) At Phillies (42-32)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, June 20, 2008 06:37 PM
Interleague play continues tonight when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim invade Citizens Bank Park for a the start of a three-gamer with the Phillies.
The Phils are coming off a 1-2 series with the Red Sox. It seemed as if the last game of that series was a week ago — in the time since, Brett Myers and a lot of trade talk ruled the roost. Now it’s time to get back to business.
The Phils will face Ervin Santana, who used to be a horrendous road pitcher, but has cleaned up his act this year. The Angels, by the way, are the top road team in the Major Leagues. Adam Eaton gets the call for the good guys.
Phillies: Adam Eaton (2-4) 4.57 ERA
Angels: Ervin Santana (8-3) 3.40 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 79, mostly sunny
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Coste, Eaton

make us believe, adam.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
He’s due to implode.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Let’s go Phils!!!!!!! Start this series off on a good note.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Are you kidding me??? Already???
June 20th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
I saw that coming from a mile away.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
Vlad continues to kill us
June 20th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
I’m not even blaming Eaton on that homer. That was a fastball down. Vlad kills the Phils.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
ya know, after the fuckin euro cup result today this is the fuckin last thing i need. i’m about thisclose to throwing the tv into long island sound.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
I’m calling a sweep because Vlad will have 5 RBI’s in each game against us.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
It is really amazing at how much Utley is off his game right now. The pitches he is swinging at are way out of the zone. That is not like him at all. Hopefully he rights the ship soon.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I am getting really sick of Utley…
June 20th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Gotta love the doubles with 2 outs and nobody on — and Eaton up next.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
I am thinking this game tonite is going to induce me into drinking a lot of beer.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
I agree with you Jason. too bad I’m at my parents because it’s my sisters birthday, and the only beer they have here is Coors Light.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
adam eaton has no business trying to get vlad out. just walk him. youre not good enough to get him out
June 20th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
same old pattern. get behind early and against good pitching, DONT come back
June 20th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
likes, seriously, theyd be better off bringing up carrasco or bastardo and resting eaton because they should know eaton isnt good enough to shut these guys down
June 20th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
He actually has good career #s against the Angels. They’re lighting him up tonight though.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
And people got on my case for saying we’re not a good baseball team. We’re clearly not a good team – this is evidence.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
if bret myers tanks tomorrow, you think they move him to the pen? i think theyd have to. hes out of second chances. its do or die for him as a starter
June 20th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
mike t…id take issue. i prefer to say…fraud! good team but overhyped but still better than the cubs.
but still a fraud. not as advertised against real competition
June 20th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
good or bad is relative to your competition
June 20th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
im beginning to think they need another stabilizing bat to start occasionally
June 20th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
the ONE good thing they are doing here is making santana throw a LOT of pitches early. good job there. wear him down. thats encouraging at least
June 20th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Geoff, your right with the same old pattern. Get behind early against good pitching and we stay behind. I’m very close to turning this game off for a while because I can’t stand to watch eaton pitch and this offense is a disgrace right now. nobody is hot right now.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Yeah, they are being more patient. Utley blew it again. At least Burrell made contact and almost put the ball out of the park.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Chase Utley finally hits something that is almost a hit, but Torri Hunter is in CF…
June 20th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
I’m starting to agree with Mike T…
June 20th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
I wish these were the good’ol days when Ervin Santana sucked on the road.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
ok its time to go to the city and go get wested. be back tomorrow to recharge before going back out to the game
enough of this bullshit
June 20th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Cheers Geoff.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Drinking is not good for the body.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Haha I was just about to ask for some suggestions for a 12-pack. my buddy is pickin me up one in about 20 minutes something relatively inexpensive.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Allagash White, Abita Purple or Magners (cider). Inexpensive – go Yards.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Drinking is good for watching this baseball game though. My beer of choice, Coors Original. Nothing special, but very drinkable.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
I said it in the beginning…Eaton was bound to implode. The thing though is they were hitting bad pitches. I mean, Eaton isn’t the best pitcher in the world, but they hit everything.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Vlad can literally hit any pitch thrown near him. He is an extremely tough out. I find it funny when ESPN shows the Vlad Zone.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Conine rule strikes again.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
This is despicable. The Mets took 2 from this team. We suck.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
I’ve already run out of beer! I had to switch to scotch! This game sucks!
June 20th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
The Angels don’t score a lot of runs. Let them get it out of their system. Honestly, Eaton was locating his pitches, they were just hitting him all over the place. Let them do that tonight and hopefully Myers can pitch okay. He’s due for a good outing.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Luckily I have beer in reserves.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
They better win the next 2. This is disgusting me.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
0-23 WTG UTLEY!!!
June 20th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
howards on his way back….back to the mendoza line….this team needs a kick in the ass…mets are on there way back
June 20th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Gillick said they’ll have to move guys on our roster to get another starter. He said they don’t have anyone in the minors. I think we value our prospects higher than they actually are.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Chris M, it’s not just Howard…it’s the whole offense.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
by the end of the week expect the phils to be in 2nd place, Marlins 1st, Phils 2nd and a very close mets right behind
June 20th, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Yeah, I’m expecting that too Joshua.
June 21st, 2008 at 12:56 am
Tonight was one of those games where I had a bad taste in my mouth at the end. Last Friday was a success because the whole team played well. Tonight was a failure because the whole team played poorly. Nobody did anything to write home about except a fairly decent 9th inning from J.C. Romero.
I think it will take a drop to 2nd place for the phils to get back to normal but we shall see. I would rather not see that happen.
June 21st, 2008 at 1:17 am
Hey, did it occurred to anyone that Johan…. err… Ervin Santana was not only dominant tonight with electric stuff against the Phillies but he had the same kind of success against other clubs this season (9-3)?
While Utley’s hitless streak continues (0 for 23), he did hit the ball hard a few times including a sac fly for one RBI.
Manuel is considering giving Utley his overdue day off with this comment:
“It might be time to give him a rest,†Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of Utley, who has started every game.”
Here’s an interesting little fact that Utley could take encouragement from:
In 1958 Richie Ashburn won his second batting title (the other in 1955; .338 BA) with a .350 BA. During that season he went through 28 consecutive at bats without a hit (0-28)!
“To cure a batting slump, I took my bat to bed with me. I wanted to know my bat a little better.†….A quote by Richie Ashburn
June 21st, 2008 at 1:42 am
ok not that i agree were playing good at all because were not .. & i was at this game tonite and it was pretty brutal to watch, but its called a slump, its a 162 game season, every team goes into slumps, in the beginning of the year the red sox lost 7 games in a row, do they suck? are the the worst? no its called baseball..mwere not going to win every game/series. Yes I agree we do need to change some things if were going to win anything in the playoffs but comeon everyone its june!
June 21st, 2008 at 8:09 am
Amanda, you need to look at the infrastructure in order to tell they’re not a good baseball team. That’s the problem with clueless fans – you see the game and base your opinion on the things that are easily visible. You can’t do that, you need to go beyond “slumps”.
June 21st, 2008 at 10:17 am
Mike, I wouldn’t call anyone else clueless. You’re the one who is not seeing beyond a slump. The majority of the year they’ve been playing outstanding ball and have one of the best offenses in the game. It’s just a rough patch right now in a long season. Obviously the holes in the rotation are seemingly bigger than one would have imagined starting out. But I’d rather be one starter away from being a great team and two starters away from being an outstanding team, rather than have no core whatsoever. The Phillies are built to win now and are one of the most exciting teams out there to watch. The fact that they’ve done so well with such a questionable rotation shows that.
June 21st, 2008 at 10:18 am
I said it before last night’s game: Eaton should have beaned Vlad in the face with the first pitch of Vlad’s first at-bat. It’s dirty, but I’m sticking to it.
I’ll be at tonight’s game. Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure we’re in for another dose of Evil Brett.
June 21st, 2008 at 10:27 am
Mike, I defended you when people started name-calling in your direction. Now, you’re doing the name calling. I’d really hate for this to degenerate into the forums on FoxSports.com, where no one argues sports. They just hurl invective.
Don’t tell us we’re clueless. Tell us what specifically is wrong with the “infrastructure” in your opinion that makes this a bad baseball team. You’ve been harping on this for like two months. Give us the analysis before you start calling all of us clueless.
June 21st, 2008 at 10:57 am
phil i think its fairly evident its not all howard
June 21st, 2008 at 11:14 am
This whole teams bats need to pick up. I think Utley will be benched today. They’re facing a lefty, a good lefty. Play Bruntlett he’s been clutch.
June 21st, 2008 at 11:16 am
I think it’s time bring Durbin into the rotation.
June 21st, 2008 at 11:22 am
Ped that’s retarded. He’s such an integral piece to that bullpen’s success. I also don’t think he has what it takes to be a starter of the calibur we want.
June 21st, 2008 at 11:31 am
I’ve been looking at the schedule. It doesn’t get much easier after this. I mean straight through the all star break we play very good teams.
I really think the key date is July 7th. If we can get out of that series vs the Mets with a division lead of 4 or 5 games over the Mets and Braves, then I think we may have survived our rough patch. Of course, that isn’t gonna be easy at all. The Mets are resurgent and have much more pitching than us, and the Braves will run off a streak at some point.
The team has got to pull itself back together.
June 21st, 2008 at 11:45 am
the daily news has Gillick saying that they move someone on the current roster for a pitcher. Who do you all think he’s thinking about? An outfeilder? Dobbs?
ps. Phil you’re right about Durbin, my bad.
