Gamenight: Angels (44-30) At Phillies (42-33)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, June 21, 2008 05:50 PM

Hmmph.

We’re all waiting for the bats to explode again, for starting pitching to be dominant, for a win, a couple wins, a streak. Of course, when your team is in first place and a bunch of games over .500 you tend to get restless when little hiccups occur. The good thing is it’s June, and there’s plenty, plenty of time for the Phils to take off and separate from the division. I’m confident they will, so does it start tonight?

Let’s put eagerness aside and hope Brett Myers patches together a solid start. Fantasy gurus say he’s a smart second-half play, since he’s throwing good pitches but just getting raked. Jim Salisbury called him out earlier this week, saying he’s the real key to the Phils future success. Everyone has an opinion of the guy, but the problem is — nobody knows why he’s been so bad. We just have to sit back and hope it comes together.

Myers will face the Angels’ Joe Saunders. Yes, they don’t let up. The lefty Saunders is 10-3 with a 3.06 ERA; the former Phils draft pick (he elected to go to college and thus became a first-round pick) has been fantastic this season. He has a brutal sinker to go along with his mid-90s fastball.

This could be the night Charlie Manuel finally sits Chase Utley; however, he did hit the ball hard yesterday. I might wait until tomorrow to sit Utley, as it’s a day game, Cole Hamels is on the hill and Utley can hit lefties relatively well.

Phillies: Brett Myers (3-8) 5.58 ERA
Angels: Joe Saunders (10-3) 3.06 ERA

Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 83, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Burrell, Howard, Werth, Coste, Feliz, Bruntlett, Myers

Your gamenight beer: Moorehouse Brewery is deep in the heart of England, and they make Black Cat, a dark mild ale that is long on taste and soft on alcohol. Black Cat is a rich, very supple-tasting beer. But I’m recommending it tonight because it seems there’s been a black cat lurking around the Phils clubhouse, making the hitters struggle and the pitchers look diseased. We need to get that cat outta’ here and start winning ballgames.

Go Phillies!

huge game!!!! myers needs to come up big… we need a win

  2. Gavin Says:

Myers is the key to us winning……oh and utley mixing in a hit or two every 23 AB’s or so.

If Myers has an actual set of gonads in his jock he’ll come through tonight. Didnt the fucking Braves take two of three from these chumps?

  3. Rob Cowie Says:

I saw Steve Carlton in the HOF Club. I gave him a ‘what’s up’

  4. chris m Says:

anybody have a link to that article about ownership somebody posted weeks back?

  5. griffin Says:

wow, a Vlad homer. What a shocker.

  6. NC Jason Says:

Fuck Rollins! Myers walks and Jroll swings at the first pitch and pops it up. Nothing like trying to get a big inning going, nothing like trying to get the pitcher to throw more pitches, nothing like having a good approach at the plate. This is why we score 20 runs and then go 40 days and 40 nights without scoring more than 3. Frustrating I am sick of this shit. Myers is pitching a gem, he should take a night off from beating his wife and beat Rollins!

  7. Mike T. Says:

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? DO WE NOT HAVE FILM ON THIS GUY?

  8. NC Jason Says:

Tim, is it possible for the entire team to the Jeltz award? (actually, in this game, everyone except for Myers)

  9. NC Jason Says:

    Finally a timely hit!

  10. andrew Says:

    figures.

  11. Mike T. Says:

I would like to take this time to say goodbye to the division lead. After tomorrow, we will no longer be in sole possession of the division, as we will be tied with Florida. I hope you’ve all enjoyed this season as much as I did – and even though we didn’t get into the playoffs this year, it was pretty gratifying to have a division lead for a few weeks.

  12. Joshua Says:

    ^ hahaha..sad but true

  13. chris m Says:

fuck howard he sucks….hes back alright…hes real clutch…he leads the league in rbis bc he has 5 rbi’s in each 20 run game….this guy fucking blows. im so over him. hes a piece of shit. hes made contact with one ball in his last 3 AB’s..didnt see his first one to know…

  14. chris m Says:

sry howard lovers but hes NOTTTTT back!

  15. chris m Says:

good move chuck…………..i say it all the fucking time taguchi sucks on defesne

  16. chris m Says:

im sry im so negative to those who get mad at anyone that doesnt say this team is tht ebest in the world (you know who u are) but we cant beat good teams…we sure did roll agianst the rockies and reds…now look

  17. thom Says:

Charlie is a moron and im tired of him giving myers the 1 more batter and if this continues chuck might be the randolph of this week.

  18. Greg V. Says:

This game made me sick. Done with Myers, and the Phillie of the Week sucks!

  19. chris m Says:

agreed thom…we were talking about that at the when he didnt make the change…with his lack of pitching changes and steve smith not sending some1 home with 2 outs and taguchi on defense…burell is a bettr defender then tag

  20. thom Says:

I think maybe the phillies need to change the lineup so it looks maybe like this:

    RF: Werth
    CF: Victornio
    2b: Utley
    LF: Burrell
    1b: Howard
    ss:rollins
    c:coste
    3b: feliz

Maybe this is worth a try if not and if the mets go ahead of the phillies i will be first to call for chucks head because im tired of him screwing up its been 4 years of this.

  21. ryan Says:

once again negadelphia overracting like a bunch of whiny little babies. take a deep breath and calm down. there’s tons of ups and downs in the season, we were way up, now we’re on the way down. there isn’t a single team in the history of baseball that doesn’t go through this. relax. it’s june for god’s sake.

  22. chris m Says:

im glad your nice and complaceant ryan bc most want more…our ups were agianst shit ass teams…how bout we beat someone decen…we lost both serie to the mets too

  23. scot Says:

don’t worry, ryan. see, chris is still learning that rational is not a synonym for complacent.

see, chris and some of the other guys here have bought into the sterotype that you aren’t a “true fan” unless you constantly point out the negative.

it’s okay. we’ll still toast beers to them in october, unless they have entirely given up or boycotted the team by then. again.

  24. chris m Says:

ya im glad your happy with this team and being ahead in 1st place….guess we cant improve…i could tell u guys didnt watch the game bc u didnt give any imput on it… so tell me what good comes out of theses last 12 games…

  25. chris m Says:

scot how bout your a true fan when you talk about the games..it seems to me you dont post shit about the games and you only post for trade talks and other stupid stuff…how bout you start talking some baseball

  26. scot Says:

nobody is saying the team can’t improve. I think everyone on here wants to trade to bolster the roster in some way.

as you were saying though, in the last 12?

There was the 2 wins against one of the NL’s top 2 home teams at the time, in their place.

There was Moyer going to 9-0 career against the Marlins, a valuable win in division.

There was the 20 run game in St. Louis.

For all your hate of Howard, his better moments over those games have helped him to be hitting around .270 the past month or so. which is moving in the right direction, not that I would expect you to see or admit that.

There was Hamels shutting down the best offense in the AL.

Moyer again showed huge guts against the same team in his performance.

If you stepped away from the red bull you’d admit that Myers start tonight exceeded your expectations.

The fact that Utley can go through an 0-23 and we’d still be in first place.

There was werth coming of the dl to give us a bit more depth.

all these happened in the last 12 games.

contrary to popular belief, the season is not yet over. and in fact, the phils are still in first place.

i’m as frustrated as anyone else here. i just choose to write in complete sentences (more often than not), and not be an alarmist.

  27. chris m Says:

its cool to correct someones grammer on a blog…last 11 games sry i gotta be so polittically correct… were 3-8. you mention a 20 run game. is that better then a 1 run game…not really. wow howard is still batting .215 with NO clutch hit. wouldnt expect you to know that since you talk NO baseball. utley goes 0-23 and were still in first place…yea we are when the other teams arnt winning and we had a nice buffer…wow moyer 9-0 agianst the marlins…thats a fact i wipe my ass with bc it doesnt help our record…baseball scot…watch some and youll learn

  28. scot Says:

    chris,

i forgot to mention when we were talkin baseball, that over the last 11, 12 (or whatever random number you want to choose) the bullpen continues to be excellent. outside of gordon’s little escapade in st louis, they have done what’s been asked of them. i noticed tonight while watching and learning that even tonight’s two runs against durbin were unearned.

    xoxo,

    scot

  29. scot Says:

Wait, Jamie Moyer, the guy who pitches for the Phillies, being 2-0 vs the Marlins this year doesn’t help the Phillies record?

    Okay, okay…

  30. chris m Says:

11 is not a random number to u it is to a phillies fan its the last three series weve lost and these two…the bullpen???i never mentioned them. our bullpen is just fine…i laughed bc u thought 11 was a random number…ha but i could always count on you for some good stats that have scrolled across the bottom of ESPN ALL day

  31. chris m Says:

2-0 does not 9-0…sry you get so defensive…its funny wen u do your xoxo and okay okay… i own you

  32. griffin Says:

the Phillies losing is tearing this blog apart!!!!

ok, seriously though, I’m glad we’re in 1st place and I know being 13 games over .500 was too good to be true. Please, if there is a God, don’t let the Muts back into this thing. Please. I will not be able to handle it living in NY. Muts fans are giddy right now (even though Pedro sucks!!!).
Hopefully, we’ll start hitting again and we’ll continue to lead the division. Myers did look good tonight though. Now, back to drinking for me…

  33. Mike Says:

For godsakes people! Yes, this is very frustrating, but it is very early in the season, and every team goes through funks like this…..even the best of them.

I am glad Chase sat out the whole game – Jen, please bang him more often! :^)

Brett pitched an awesome game until the eighth inning! It is always that one extra batter that does him in. Vlad’s first homerun was a great pitch. Second homerun pitch was horrible – piped down the center – no brainer.

I agree with the comment on the lineup switcheroo. Jimmy is to comfortable as lead-off. Howard has waaay to many LOBs It is time to mix things up a bit.

As frustrated as I am, I still hang on all of the commentary, listen to every bit of radio, and read all of the blogs and watch every pitch of every inning of every game – luv my Phillies!

Sh!tcan Chris Wheeler and hire Mitch Williams – PAleeze! Mitch is the best commentator in the game today!!! I am so tired of hearing comments like “You know, they have a really low batting average because they are just not getting any hits.” Comment after comment after comment like that! I am so sick of that POS!

    Go Phillies!!!!!

  34. chris m Says:

just as it looks like the mets are going on a roll they have a big loss tonite…3.5 would not be good considering it was 7.5 last week…

  35. chris m Says:

i dno bout rollins as 6 but i wouldnt mind him at 2 or 5…who would bat 2 when werth is on the bench? i think howard could be moved down. he doesnt need protection bc hes not doing it with burell behind him.. so it would be good to see burell as 4 to break him and utley up for late in the game when there able to put a lefty agianst both of them.

  36. chris m Says:

gotta roll out for the nite…sry scot ill get back to ya in the mornin

  37. Robbi P Says:

Love when Wheeler says “No Doubles Defense”

  38. Jason Says:

Philly fans by its very nature bring out the most negative views ever, no matter how the team is doing. Can anybody, on here for once, look at the glass half full for a change. Yes the team is not playing well, but they are still in first place. It is nice to play like shit and still be leading the division. Way too many negative views on this blog. I really like to come on this site to read the articles and commentary, but the commentary is WAY to negative against this team. And these are our so called supporters. Lets do something good and really get behind this team.

    LETS GO PHILLIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. AP Says:

What is going on?! I’m really worried.

Ugh. 4 games in a row lost. It’s tough times like these that make me remember why I love the Phillies so much.

Hopefully we can bounce back..please don’t let me down.

And, not to sound weird or anything, but I had the luxury of actually getting to watch a Phillies game – since I’m out here in Pasadena, CA and they were playing the Angels. They brought up Gary Matthews Sr. for commentary in the 7th..that was cool – but what bugged me was that they kept showing So Man’s face after he missed that fly ball. He looked super sad..I felt sorry for him.

Anyhow, let’s pull for a win tomorrow. We’re still in first place, let’s start playing like a first place team…don’t let me down another time, Fightin’s.

Die Hard Phillies fan forever – just very discouraged about if we’re even going to MAKE the playoffs :-(

  40. Gavin Says:

I said two weeks ago we just need to survive this stretch. I anint happy and this team is royally pissing me off, but I agree that too many people are jumping off the deep end.

Unfortunately we still have a bunch of tough games ahead, so if the players dont get a clue we could be in trouble.

  41. ryan Says:

some of the people posting on here remind me of the type of fans that say things like “i don’t want this team to make the playoffs because i don’t like the manager”.

  42. Phil Says:

I’d rather be cold now and get hot when the Mets come to town. I honestly think the Phillies are having trouble handling the pressure of being in 1st place. They’re used to chasing not being chased. I didn’t watch the game last night, it was my little sisters sweet 16 birthday party and I had to DJ it, but I kept checking the score on my cell phone, and I’d assume Myers pitched great. I guess Vlad is back to kill us again. He’ll probably knock Hamels around too. This team needs to step it up. I knew this would be the hardest stretch of the season. A’s aren’t going to be any easier. Their pitching is even better than the Sox and the Angels. Luckily one game is against Blanton who blows. Today we’re facing Weaver who blows too. Let’s get this win. We can pick it back up again when we face the Rangers who have horrible pitching. Their rotation makes ours look like the greatest thing ever. As for Eaton imploding last night. It was expected and about time. It’s hard for even great pitchers to get 6 Q’s in a row. We need to be in 1st place after the all-star break. Our 2nd half of the season is going to be a lot easier.

  43. clicheguevara Says:

I may be nitpicking here, but why doesn’t Victorino hit leadoff and Rollins move to the 2 spot? Victorino gets on base more frequently (.345 to .340) and Rollins hits for way more power (.450 to .382). Vic is also a switch so we would get a favorable start every time. Wouldn’t it just make sense for Jimmy’s leadoff homers to turn into 2 runs?

Is there something I am missing here?

  44. Phil Says:

Rollins has always hit better in the lead off spot than anywhere else they have ever tried to bat him.

  45. chris m Says:

as i said yeaterday vic should be leadoff bc rollins would fit better as a 2 and vic cant situational hit not that rollins will be much better but rollins is a better fit at 2 as hoard is at 5….and for ryan. sry but thats the stupidest quote ive ever heard and NEVER heard anyone say that

  46. clicheguevara Says:

This is the lineup I would throw out to maximize our potential, at least against leftys:

    Victorino
    Rollins
    Burrell
    Utley
    Werth
    Howard
    Feliz
    Coste

There’s no doubt in my mind Vic should occupy the leadoff spot. Although breaking up the leftys would be nice, Burrells OBP is just too sick not to use earlier, ESPECIALLY with Utley hitting with so much power this year. Howard needs a wakeup call badly and won’t hurt us so badly at 6. Also, he will almost always have people on base for him to rake in with the way the three in the front of him get on base. Of course this is all too logical for it to ever happen.

  47. clicheguevara Says:

and scratch what I said about the leftys

  48. Geoff Says:

I was there last night and i was certaintly pissed.

first of all, myers pitched well for most of the game. double digit k’s i think.

he shouldve been pulled after going 7 so he could have left with confidence and a positive attitude. scratch that because erick eybar went yard on him in the 8th when someone else shouldve been on the mound.

scot shields was throwing straight cheddar.

again, the pattern continues with this team. this is what they do against good pitching. they get behind early and they dont win.

but they DID come back, and promtly botched it in a brand new way. ok, now i know feliz is slow. in that situation you have to pinch run for him. they need another speed guy off the bench. michael bourn was great in that role and perhaps golson can do that. so taguchi doesnt count because he dropped an easy fly last night. no excuses, DFA’d. you have to be able to catch fly balls to be a professional baseball player. bring up golson or even TJ bohn would do better than that.

WHEN they get another starter theyll need to reshuffle and move someone to the bullpen.

in all honesty though, this teams needs a whole lot more than one starter. they probably need two more solid starters. one more solid bullpen arm. AND a better 5th outfielder. AND the guys that they are committed to in this lineup need to just improve because theyre not patient enough. this lineup needs to improve because it was exposed by good pitching and it will continue to be until they fix that.

  49. Bruce Says:

    Source: Boston Globe

“The Boston Globe, citing an unnamed team official said the Philadelphia Phillies are beating the bushes for one more starting pitcher. They’ll be in on just about anybody who becomes available, perhaps a No. 2 or No. 3 type.

They would also be in on a No. 1 such as C.C. Sabathia if the Indians are serious about peddling him or Erik Bedard if the Mariners rip things apart.

They are also taking a good look at A.J. Burnett, who has an opt-out, as well as Bronson Arroyo and Derek Lowe. The official said the Phillies see this year as a prime opportunity to make it to the World Series.”
