Gamenight: Phillies (37-26) At Braves (32-30)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, June 07, 2008 05:27 PM

Last night turned out to be a classic, playoff-style battle between two ultra-competitive teams. And our good guys won, 4-3, in the most miraculous of ways. They are now 3.5 up on the rest of the NL East and are 11 games over .500.

Tonight Kyle Kendrick will try and rebound from an OK start. Against the Braves he is 3-3 with a 4.24 ERA. Meanwhile the offense gets a crack at Jo-Jo Reyes, who gave up five runs in 6.2 innings against the Phils May 13. A lefty, Jo-Jo will get the righty lineup, including newly activated Jayson Werth, who comes back from a 15-day DL stint. He’ll start in right field.

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (5-2) 5.00 ERA
Braves: Jo-Jo Reyes (2-3) 4.78 ERA

Gametime: 7 p.m. EST
Weather: 91 degrees, sunny
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Werth, Feliz, Ruiz, Kendrick

Your gameday beer: It’s like, really, really hot outside. Here in Connecticut it’s 90 degrees. In Philly it’s a toasty 95+. Atlanta is hot, as well. For that, break out the great Summer favorite, Sam Adams Summer Ale. Light and refreshing, it’s a smooth lemony beer that lets you ease back and enjoy the slowness of summer anytime. You can eat a lot with it, but I’ll go with the American hot dog, a perfect summer combination.

Go Phillies!

  1. erik Says:

first base umpire’s bad call on howard just cost us a run on pats double

  2. Tim Malcolm Says:

Beauty-ful play by Rollins to close out the second.

Kendrick’s walks might come back to hurt him. And he’s thrown a boat of pitches already. Don’t want to use too much bullpen tonight.

  3. Tim Malcolm Says:

erik: Dunno about that. Franceour has a laser in right — would’ve been a tough score. Then again, would’ve been no out and two on if they don’t send him.

  4. NateB Says:

Rollins looks hot in the field, but why isn’t he working the counts this year? When he’s hot at the plate he works the counts.

  5. chris m Says:

howard fucking blows.period end of story. nobody try to defend this idiot bc hes hurting our team hitting and defensively…plus thats a phatom interferance call that just cost us a run

  6. NateB Says:

I really think Howard has been introduced to new ways of thinking at the plate by the hitting coaches/teammates. Working the counts, avoiding the strikeout, etc. Whatever was his approach at the plate in 2006 should definitely come back… even if it was brainless hitting!!! Well, .313 with 58 homers this year??? Just crush the ball like you used to please.

  7. NateB Says:

If it weren’t for the bad calls Ruiz’s homer would have made it 3-0 right now.

  8. chris m Says:

anybody that defend this idiot id a bigger idiot bc howard sucks ass

  9. chris m Says:

howard cost us atleast another 1

  10. Tim Malcolm Says:

Howard’s DP ball made a three-run lead a two-run lead. Good shot by Burrell. Seems to be heating up again.

  11. chris m Says:

howard doesnt even deserve to be on th AA squad bc he would make them look bad…if manuel actually used his head and had pat in the 4 hole we would have had that run

  12. danny Says:

LOL. a two run homer to chipper. who didn’t see that coming?

TIM PLEASE WRITE RYAN ANOTHER OPEN LETTER.

    Please……

  13. chris m Says:

dont bother he shit…ill trade him for 11 bats at this piont

  14. danny Says:

Hey everyone, what time is it?

  15. danny Says:

    [everyone] KENDRICK TIME!!!

  16. chris m Says:

madson effective?!? never thouught id say that in a big situation

  17. Tim Malcolm Says:

Tough catch-22 there with Madson hitting. I can see why — he has a low pitch count and you don’t want to tax the rest of the bullpen again — but it’s tough not to use the bench. Still, against Reyes, you don’t have great options (Coste maybe, and Bruntlett).

  18. Tim Malcolm Says:

Even when hot girls are doing it, I hate the chop.

  19. chris m Says:

the chop isnt even their original thing…it originated at florida state

  20. Tim Malcolm Says:

Don’t know if I’d classify Eaton as a “journeyman” starter. Journeymen don’t make $8M per.

And NOW Madson hitting doesn’t make sense if they’re pulling him with one out.

  21. chris m Says:

i thought the same thing after listening to these homer annoucers

  22. chris m Says:

charlie is a terrible in game manager

  23. chris m Says:

    another reason he MVP

  24. chris m Says:

howard had no chance at that ..why did he continue running over there like he did and almost got kkilled

  25. erik Says:

chris, we are in a good game with a good team who plays their best ball at home, and we a decent lead in the division and are playing the best baseball we have played all year long 10 wins out of our last 12 games, stop fucking complaining

  26. chris m Says:

shut the fuck up. u must be fat like howard and thats why ur defending him. y woulld u defend som1 thats been our worst player all year u moron

  27. chris m Says:

complacentcy or however u spell it…thats erics problem

  28. erik Says:

    chase is the man

  29. Tim Malcolm Says:

MVP, baby. And he gets to third. Unreal.

Also, Vic working the walk. He’s been on fire.

  30. danny Says:

CHASE I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BABY- PLEASE MAKE A MAN OUT OF ME.

    what a huge hit.

  31. Brian G. Says:

If Ryan can’t get this run in — I have officially given up on him.

  32. erik Says:

allright dickhead, since you have the audacity to be calling people morons and idiots, maybe you should be checking out your grammar and spelling, because it is pathetic. by the way i am 6′0 and weight 185 and I am a network administrator. so that should answer your comments about me being fat and a moron. but by all means, continue your 3rd grade level typing if you must

  33. chris m Says:

dont say that eric will be mad if anybody complains

  34. Tim Malcolm Says:

Nice job, Ryan. And guys, calm down a bit. Let’s be civil. This is a baseball game.

  35. erik Says:

good job howard, great clutch hit

  36. danny Says:

Yeah Ryan! I still hate you, but yeah baby!

  37. NateB Says:

thanks chris for calling me an idiot for defending howard… even tho i was critiquing him. ha ha intelligent. i think someone is drinking too much to understand intelligent baseball. we are winning this game. utley hits another RBI to show chipper who the real MVP is.

  38. Tim Malcolm Says:

I swear to God if I hear “Hi, dis is Victor Martinez” one more time …

  39. Tim Malcolm Says:

Also, Skip Caray just said “let a runner steal a base unmolested.”

  40. chris m Says:

so im not gonna start this kind of crap in front of everyone…sorry i dont capitolize everything and spell check everything…didnt know i had to but its funny when u criticize my grammer in ur statment when ur gammer isnt good either. only two network administrators i have met is one becuase he didnt wanna put the extra effort into any other better degree and the other didnt need a degree

  41. chris m Says:

nate you misread my comment… i wasnt adressing anything at you

  42. NateB Says:

ok no worries. Let’s go Phils!

  43. chris m Says:

its straight i was just venting on howard but found out it wasnt allowed

  44. Tim Malcolm Says:

Hey, vent all you want — I just don’t want personal attacks or anything. Let’s keep it on the team.

  45. Julie Says:

Tim, I was thinking the same thing about Victor Martinez…hilarious. I think mlb.com only has 1-2 commercials max.

Clutch hit by Howard, and it’s good to see Werth back in action. Come on, Flash!

  46. chris m Says:

i understand tim i was personally attacking howard( which i hope is fine) then some1 peronally attacked me so thats the only reason i fired back

  47. NateB Says:

Tim what’s this about writing another letter to Howard? You have his email address or something?

  48. erik Says:

chris, i dont understand all of the negativity when we are playing the best we played all year long. you have your right to say what you want and you are entitled to your opinion, however so am i. i was just trying to counter your point. be easy on calling me fat and a moron and there would be no problems. that kind of stuff pisses people off.

  49. NateB Says:

Gordon- 3 strike outs! What a bullpen!

  50. chris m Says:

when you tell people ” to stop fucking complaining” that pisses people off as well. i just dont think we are playing our the best that were capable of playing. we won by a dropped fly ball last nite… howard hasnt been doing anything… offense hasnt really done much lately. its fine to criticize howard bc he hasnt done anything. no need to get your panties in a knot. its a blog this is where were supposed to vioce our frustation. and thats all i did until u attacked me

  51. erik Says:

umm my last message was more than civil, yours however includes my getting my panties in a knot.. as per tims request i am trying to not be an ass. however, like i said before we have won 10 of our last 12 games, which is by far the best this team has been playing all year. in that stretch, we went from 1.5 back to 3.5 ahead. that to me seems pretty good. i am sure most would agree. and yeah we did win on an e-4 last night, but a win is a win is a win, and i will take the w in the win column. and the offense has been lacking a little over the last week, however, our pitching staff has been lights out. and being this game is a mixture of both offense and defense, the TEAM doing very well and i am happy with them.

  52. erik Says:

    utley is a ball magnet.

  53. Rob Cowie Says:

Lovin the 52 game day threads on a friday. Go phils!

  54. Julie Says:

Hey guys, take it easy. You both have good points, so let’s just move on.

Do we bring in Lidge tonight for a non-save opportunity given his shaky performance last night?

  55. chris m Says:

i am happy as well even though we played the reds and the rockies and a decent marlin team. but howard is a liability. put dobbs there and this is a better team offensivly and defensivly. ur mad that im complaining about howard when im sure most people are dissapionted in his preformance

  56. chris m Says:

would rather see someone else close to save him

  57. Julie Says:

Yeah that’s what I was thinking…I guess Charlie doesn’t agree.

  58. erik Says:

gordon and lidge striking out both of their respective sides, great. clinch the first series in a tough 3 series road trip, great. continue to build our lead in the division, great. i love it.

  59. chris m Says:

im gonna be the bigger man and say sorry for the response i gave you to your comments. its tough to see how i meant the words over a computer. but nothings wrong with a little disagreement. however howard preformance has sucked this year. i know he had a rbi tonite but also a big double pay and an error

  60. NateB Says:

We were wondering this winter which Lidge we’d get this season. WE GOT “LIGHTS OUT LIDGE” FOR BOURNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 more stike outs… what a bullpen!

  61. erik Says:

i apoligize as well, like you said nothing is wrong with a little disagreement, in fact i take this blogging as a chance to debate the opinions of others. but honestly, the only thing that matters is that we won. great job phils, lets hope the reds can hold on and we can gain yet another of the fish..

  62. chris m Says:

well we cant build a lead until the marlins lose

  63. Gavin Says:

Chris, its impossible for every guy on the team to be hot at the same time. This team is on a roll…..quit fucking around with the vibe dude.

  64. Gnomicide Says:

We are not a good team right now.

  65. danny Says:

We just are not a good team at this point right now.

  66. Mike T. Says:

It’s funny that you mock me – but it’s true, we’re just not that good of a team right now. Move Howard, get me another lefty in the bullpen (Romero’s hurt), and try to make moves for a number 1 or 2 starter – that will make us a good team. These wins are good, but they’re not convincing. No decisions by the pitchers the last 2 nights, offense showing up late against mediocre pitching tonight, Howard looking absolutely horrible, Jimmy in a slump, Dobbs beginning to fade, and a steady platoon of average outfielders. We’ll see what Eaton does tomorrow, but I’m telling you we won’t be a good team unless will fill in our holes, like all championship teams do.

  67. Mike T. Says:

And that’s not me trying to start shit by the way, that’s the truth – ask Geoff.

  68. NateB Says:

It’s true. Now is the time to spend the money to fill in our holes. We have a chance this year, but need a few more tweaks to make this work in the playoffs.

  69. Mike T. Says:

Also, about the new poll. If you’re insane enough to think our biggest need right now is “Ryan Howard circa 2006″, you have completely lost your mind. We need another starting pitcher, no questions asked. I knew there were a lot of idiots who visit this site, but not that many. Get your heads out of your asses – PITCHING WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you don’t believe me, see the ‘01 Diamondbacks, ‘02 Angels, ‘03 Marlins, ‘04 Red Sox, ‘05 White Sox, ‘06 Cardinals, and the ‘07 Red Sox. I don’t know about you, but I want a championship, not a division title. Morons.

  70. Mike T. Says:

If you notice, the most intelligent people who comment on this site regularly, agree with the points I make. That says something about the people who consistently disagree with me. Get a grip on how the game of baseball is played, listen to sports talk radio, read some fucking articles, visit baseballreference.com, pay attention to the game.. whatever you need to do to stop sounding like an idiot —- or just stop commenting. I’m tired of you morons who don’t know anything about anything. Goodnight.

  71. chris m Says:

gavin are u kidding me….im messing with the vibe? they read my stuff in the lockerroom? howard sucks get ur head out of ur ass gavin….thats alll i complained about tonite and im right

  72. chris m Says:

mike t’s right theres a lot of room for improvement starting with howard and pitching…gavin dont jump on me if you dont know the situation

  73. Jay Says:

I have a HUGE “man crush” on Chase right now!

  74. Clare Says:

I have a huge non-man crush on Chase all the time!

  75. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

    Mike-

Just thought this would be interesting to point out.

The ‘01 Mariners (League Record 116 game winners)
    -ERA 3.54
    -Runs/Game 5.2

    ‘08 Phillies
    -ERA 3.88
    -Runs/Game 5.8

If my math is correct the Phillies actually have a better differential this year than the ‘01 Mariners. So how is it possible that they are not a good team when they are essentially playing better than the best team ever (by numbers/wins). I understand that you will come back with the fact that they did not win the world series, but my point is just to say that this team is very good, actually they are elite, so saying they are not a good team and that they are not winning convincingly, but they are, on average winning more ‘convincingly’ than the ‘01 Mariners.
    These numbers are from baseball-reference.com

-interesting note, both Freddy Garcia and Jamie Moyer were on that ‘01 Mariners team.

  76. Geoff Says:

the bullpen era is the best in mlb this year thats why the team era is low. that wont continue unless the starting pitching improves in personnel or performance. i guarantee that, even against the national league. they can pitch better and meet that requirement, but id rather be sure about it.

nice win tonight again. some of you guys get all arrogant when theyre on a roll like this and start making fun of mike t or some others. id say take it easy guys. yes, enjoy these wins. they were god wins. however, the braves re-exposed some glaring deficiencies with the pitching staff. kendrick pitched well tonight and when the fifth starter gives you that then you get him out of the game like charlie did at that time. the problem with this team is still starting pitching. its still not enough for the playoffs. this bullpen is overworked and they should not have had to use lidge tonight. three of your give pitchers are really only safe to use for 6 innings. thats killing this bullpen. they need one of the 3,4,5 starters to go 7 regularly. they arent getting that and they need to bring someone int here who can do that. period. myers needs to start giving you seven or 8 every time out there. hes beeen much better lately and he needs to keep it up. romero is a little out of whack, id give him a rest but they dont have anyone who can should his part of the burden. they DEFINITELY need another left-handed bullpen arm to take the burden off of romero and allow him to regain his form. someone that you can send out there in a key situation and not cringe on every pitch.

this team is fully capable of winning a championship and i expect them to. in order to do that, they need better pitching. the american league is more hyped on tv because they have the offense AND the pitching that has dominated the national league for far too long now, generally speaking. guys, jamie moyer is not going to hold the red sox or some team like that IN THE WORLD SERIES to one or two or anything less than 5 runs if hes lucky. adam eaton wont even be allowed to start in the playoffs even if hes in form i trust kendrick more than him. cc sabathia, chien ming wang, and john lackey all got shelled last year in the playoffs at various points in time. even those guys get smoked in the playoffs sometimes. you dare think the phillies rotation can shut down some of these offenses in a world series matchup?

give me another guy thats as good as myers is supposed to be. then you have a pretty good rotation to bring to the table.

starting pitching needs to be effective consistently so that your bullpen can be more rested and effective when youc all upon it. the philies had the same problem last year and they didnt fix it in the offseason.

the offense this year is just as good and probably better than it was at the end of last year. the bullpen is better than it was last year. the starting pitching is probably a little better than last year but its not good enough from top to bottom to get it done. all we are asking for is one more guy. you can even rent him for all i care, ill let up on that requirement. just get me a guy that can win game 2’s to setup myers for game 3and i will feel a lot better. there will be some available at the deadline if the general manager cares enough to go and get one.

anyway. they played well lately despite all of that and now we shall see how eaton fares against chipper jones and mark texiera and co. if he holds this lineup to 3 or less runs then i will rest easier tomorrow.

  77. Geoff Says:

and trade ryan howard for someone that makes contact with the baseball. anybody can play first base. hes there for his hitting which he isnt doing enough of.

how dare other teams walk chase utley to get to the cleanup hitter. thats so arrogant and they got away with it because howard swings at anything that looks liek a breaking ball low and away

  78. Paul Says:

“It’s funny that you mock me – but it’s true, we’re just not that good of a team right now…”

Exactly Mike T, the Phillies have the 2nd best record in the NL, and 5th best in all of baseball. Not good at all. I can’t imagine what you would say if they are were playing .500 ball…

  79. Geoff Says:

where i disagree with mike t is making the distinction between not good enough to win a championship and not good. not good is the new york mets. bad is the washington nationals. the phillies are a good team. im not sure whether they are a great team. great teams win the world series. to be great they need to be good enough to win the world series. right now most of their team is good enough except there is a hole in their starting rotation. you need one more solid and consistent starter at the front of the rotation. i dont trust jamie moyer and adam eaton to provide that stability between them in the postseason, particularly if this team gets to the world series.

great – last year’s red sox or any other world series champion
    good – phillies
    average – braves, marlins
    not goods – mets
    bad – nationals

thats my scale in a divisional setting. they can probably get to the world series as they are because of the lack of good teams in the national league. but they need more pitching stability in the rotation and in the bullpen to win the world series. maybe another bat that doesnt strike out as much as ryan howard would also help this team.

  80. Paul Says:

Good point Geoff. The Phils are definitely a good team, time will tell if they are great. Sweeping the Braves at ATL would help! Go Phils!
