Gamenight: Phillies (40-28) At Cardinals (40-28)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, June 13, 2008 06:50 PM

Jamie Moyer rescued the Phillies from a sweep at the hands of the Marlins, giving the Phils a three-game lead in the National League East. Now they’ll get a three-game series in Saint Louis against the Cardinals, who sit with the Phils at 40-28, the second-best record in the National League. It’s the treasured “only NL series during a bunch of Interleague series” series of the weekend.

Todd Wellemeyer goes for the Cards. He has a 2.93 ERA, but has never pitched more than seven innings in a game. Who has he defeated? The Giants, the Nationals, the Pirates, the Padres and the Cubs (he threw five innings of 2 ER ball against them). Needless to say, the Phils could bash this guy into next week. The Phils will throw Kyle Kendrick out there. He trudged through 5.1 innings, giving up two earned runs against the Braves in his last start. Kendrick gave up four earned runs in 13 innings to the Cardinals last season. The Phils are 6-1 in his road starts with a five-game winning streak.

Ryan Howard returns home to Saint Louis. He’s been slumping hard all season (duh), but he can hit at home. He’s hitting .333 with 3 HR and 14 RBI at Busch Stadium II.

Rain is pouring throughout the Midwest. We’ll see if they get this one in.

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (5-2) 4.87 ERA
Cardinals: Todd Wellemeyer (7-1) 2.93 ERA

Gametime: 8:15 p.m. EST
Weather: 74, heavy storms
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Ruiz, Kendrick

  5. Keith Says:

i meant back to back to back

  6. Mike T. Says:

Told you Wellemeyer is a fraud.

  7. Phil Says:

I’m not watching the game, but I just heard what happened. I hope that was a wake up call for Ryan Howard. I bet he’s thinking, it’s pretty pathetic that Burrell and Utley have more home runs than me.

  8. Tim Malcolm Says:

    HOW ABOUT THAT SHIT.

  9. Rob Cowie Says:

    Tiger is 1 1 back

  10. chris m Says:

    does 1 1 stand for 1 back?

  11. chris m Says:

wow does ruiz have to have runners on to hit. but they have to be in scoring position or its a DP

  12. Rob Cowie Says:

Typo on the cell phone. My reguards.

  13. chris m Says:

i thought it was 11 back and he was gonna miss the cut so i figued i had to check myself lol

    Also, I told too.

  15. Rob Cowie Says:

    He’s roaring a comeback

  16. Tim Malcolm Says:

The FSN scorekeeper is all kinds of fucked up.

  17. chris m Says:

    good call tim

  18. Mike T. Says:

“It’s time for the offense to feast on an overrated Wellemeyer. Wellemeyer is straight junk. He had one good game against the Cubs this year, faced the Pirates 3 times, and the Giants twice. He hasn’t faced an offense like the Phils. The guy usually doesn’t go more than six innings, and he’s a righty. I like this match up tonight, I really do. If we can’t get to Wellemeyer, we’ll definitely get to their bullpen.” 10:27 AM

  19. Tim Malcolm Says:

I mean, we’re both right Mike.

Time to go out for the night, but kids, this has been a pleasure.

  20. Geoff Says:

I cannot believe wellemeyer has the record he has. he is TERRIBLE. i knew he was bad but hes worse than i remember. how does this team in general have the record it has? their division is a fraud. has to be. this cardinal team is GARBAGE without albert pujols. back to back to back homeruns in the first inning? three letters for you: D-F-A wellemeyer once i saw that. 12-1 in the 4th. kendrick is one of the worst hitters ive ever seen and HE has an rbi. the offense needed an outburst like this. time to go to the casino at harrahs for a little while.
this ones in the bag. good one tonight.

    where were we?

so what about derek lowe? anybody think hed be a great fit here?

  21. Mike T. Says:

This is a pretty good remedy to that series in Miami. I’m out also, have a good night everyone. Go Phils!

And yes, Derek Lowe would be great here.

  22. Rob Cowie Says:

I think the point spread was the Phillies laying 3.5 . After 4 they are up by a touchdown and a field goal.

  23. chris m Says:

    i like lowe…sinkerball…is he a rental though?

  24. chris m Says:

i would love to know the last time a pitcher has two hits in the same inning

  25. Phil Says:

They are up by 2 touchdowns but missed the extra point.

  26. Fran Says:

    this is insane

  27. chris m Says:

little chipper got hurt agian….hell probaly hit .400 bc he never plays

  28. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

The Bruntlett sub is weird. Isn’t Jimmy the one who is coming off of an injury and has been somewhat slow with that ankle? Why take Utley out instead of Rollins?

  29. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

What happened on that Howard HBP. There was a big break on cbs.sportsline. Was there a fight, or just an ejection?

  30. Phil Says:

Ejection. I’m not watchign the game because my gf doesn’t have cable, but I hear it was on purpose.

  31. chris m Says:

ya it was then seanez threw behind one of there guys and didnt get ejected….aaron miles pitched(position player) and became the only pitcher for the cardinals not to get scored on

  32. BillyPenn Says:

The Rays dropped Florida like a bad habit tonight

  33. tom Says:

the dodgers are good, why would they trade lowe? they could win the west/wild card

  34. Greg V. Says:

Great game, esp from Howard who I have been ripping a lot lately. Sometimes you just have to come home. He’s a long way from making me comfortable this season though!

  35. philspan Says:

The Dodgers are currently 5 games behind in the NL West with the Giants and Padres only 1 and 1 and a half games behind them. The dodgers aren’t good, but they aren’t bad either. If they get into a bad losing streak they could be out of it before the trade deadline. Lowe is a free agent next year and they have the pitching depth to survive trading him, so it is possible they might trade him. I would like to see the Phillies try to get him or Aaron Cook.

  36. Phil Says:

Hey, does anyone think this might have been what Howard needed to get out of his slump? I really hope it was. Man, they made the Cards look like a really, really bad team. I think tomorrow is a sure fire win too. I’m sure these guys know what kind of stuff Loshe has after playing with him last year.

  37. Geoff Says:

I read that theyre not trading aaron cook no matter how bad they are…dunno why but thats what i read. lowe will be a free agent but i think they could resign him to a safe contract given his age and the fact that im sure hed like pitching here with his sinker. he could eat innings for sure. would be very effective this year i think. i think he wouldnt cost a lot either. i just get that feeling. its a safe move if the bedard sabathia sheets type move fails to come to fruition.

  38. Lewisauce Says:

Good to see Howard come through, though I’m far from “apologizing” for ripping him. In fact, every time someone really rips into him on this site (I don’t mean “oh he struck out again what a surprise” comments, I mean really digs into him), he seems to come back with a monster game.

If that’s what it takes, I’ll torch the guy every day. ;)

  39. scot Says:

Damn, that was fantastic. Good to see PhilliesNation fan favorite Carlos Ruiz have a solid game as well!

  40. chris m Says:

common howard had 1 good game and so did everyone else. wait to say hes comming through until he has a couple good weeks. this guy has done it several times and continues to slump. i want the guy to do well but its ONE game relax everyone, we have had this conversation 10 times this year

  41. Rob O Says:

Damn fellers you got it right. An old fashiponed butt kickin’ And it could not happen to a nicer guy in Tony LaRussa. I jsut wish scottie Rolen was still here to enjoy it.

  42. scot Says:

While I don’t think Howard is playing at an MVP level this year, chances are if you are fourth in the NL in RBI’s you’ve had more than “one good game”

  43. chris m Says:

well when you constantly have runners in scoring position you tend to pick up rbi’s. scot if you havnt checked lately hes hitting below .210. if that is sufficient sign me up

  44. Tommy A Says:

Hey scot — agreed, Howard has 17 dingers and 54 RBI, nothing wrong with those numbers — but the answer for the .212 batting average isn’t completely clear. Obviously, we’ve all seen him lose several hits to “the shift,” but that’s when a premier hitter makes adjustments. Dislike and steroids aside, Barry Bonds adjusted to the shift teams put on him and went the other way. Howard tries to hit over it, that’s going to work ten percent of the time.

Imagine cutting down on the strikeouts by one third? 60 instead of 90 at this point. Even if he’s hitting .260, he’s most likely leading the league in all the power catergories. Milt Thompson or Charlie needs to pull the kid aside and find a solution to get him to put the ball in play more. Burrell’s learned to go the other way. As good as this season’s been so far, Howard at .260 (let alone .290-.310) would probably give us 2-4 more wins at this point.

  45. Phil Says:

Who’s getting the Asburn Award tonight? I say give it to Ruiz as it might be the only time this season he’ll play good enough to get it. hahahaha

  46. scot Says:

I agree, Tommy. I am one of the few who was/is a huge Bonds fans because of the adjustments he continually made to his game. Steroids or not, he was a very smart player. I’d love to see Howard think that much but I just don’t think he’s the same type of player.

Chris, I believe last night brought him up to .212!!!! At the end of the day, there are hundreds of players in the MLB who put in Howards position wouldn’t have his homerun or rbi totals. You know that as well as I do. Am I happy he’s hitting .212? By no means. I don’t even think the Phils should give him a long term deal at this rate. But, at the same time I don’t throw players under the bus on a first place team just for the sake of doing so. Howards homeruns and rbi’s are a large part of why this team is where it is right now. It doesn’t take a PHD to realize that.

  47. Phil Says:

Has anyone ever noticed that 50% of Howard’s RBIs/homers come when we don’t need them, and he doesn’t get them when we do. Like for instance we were up 8-3 against the Marlins, not saying a 5 fun lead isn’t something the fish couldn’t come back from, but he hit a 3 run homer to make it 11-3. I’d rather see him get the 3 run homer when we’re down 8-3, you know what I mean?

  48. Tommy A Says:

Phil, I hear ya man…but 50% of almost everybody’s homers come when nobody needs them. I can’t tell you how many times I see a team up 7-1 in the eighth and their cleanup guy jacks his first bomb of the night when it’s merely window dressing. It’s the nature of power hitters, the get a lot of meaningless homers over a 162 game schedule.

  49. Phil Says:

haha I guess someone took my advice about Ruiz and the Ashburn Award.

  50. Phil Says:

Hey, Tim. I have a new beer for you to post. Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. It’s a lemonade flavored summer beer. It’s very very good. Very refreshing. It’s the kind of beer you’d want to do after coming inside after sweating all day outside. I don’t know if you’ve posted it or tried before, but if you haven’t I highly suggest it.

  51. chris m Says:

well A-rod is the king of the piontless homerun. if rollins was in the cleanup spot hed have more rbis then howard(but maybe not if howard was leading off bc he never gets on base) the reason for hoards power numbe being up is rollins victorino and utley. phil that DOESNT take a PHD to realize

  52. chris m Says:

you guys are the same guys that then get on him when he goes 0 for 12. each day your on a differant side. ill get on the other side when he becomes consistantly good. im not going to flip flop everytime he has a good game when we win 20-2! i want to see him hit consistantly and with clutchness.

  53. Phil Says:

I never said anything about Howard being 4th in the league in RBIs. I said that 50% of his RBIs aren’t helpful to the team. He would be leading the majors in RBIs if he didn’t k with runners in scoring position so often.

  54. Bruce Says:

“….the reason for hoards power numbe being up is rollins victorino and utley. “….says Chris m. Those tablesetters are exactly what the no 4 hitter needs for RBI production (54 and fourth in the NL for Howard).

Also to you Phil… your mythical percentage of 50% for meaningless HRs doesn’t jive with Howard’s current stats for his clutch ability with RISP. If you did your homework, you will find that Howard is hitting .313 with RISP (25 for 80 with FIVE HRs and 39 RBIs). In addition, RISP with 2 outs, he is hitting .300 (12 for 40 with TWO HRs and 16 RBIs).

As I previously posted several times, I’ll be satisfied if my no 4 hitter is clutch with RISP and on pace for 100+ RBIs. I rest my case.

  55. Phil Says:

No, I’m saying he’s not hitting them when the team needs him to. Like the game against the Reds with bases loaded and down by 2. Or going 0 for 12 in the Marlins series when we lost a game by 1 run and another game we coulda won if we gotten the lead and put Lidge in. Instead he’ll hit a 3 run blast when we’re up by 5 or more runs.

  56. ryan Says:

all you guys ripping howard need to get a grip. Ryan Howard, no matter what his average is this year, is still probably the best pure homerun hitter in all of baseball today. He’ll probably lead the league in HR’s and RBI’s again this year. yet you guys will all bitch and yell about how his numbers are so hollow. whatever, you want a clutch guy, put david eckstein in the phils cleanup spot, see how much he produces for ya.
