Gamenight: Phillies (42-35) At Athletics (41-34)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, June 24, 2008 09:27 PM

After the most disappointing stretch of Phillies baseball in a few years, the first-place (hangin’ by a thread) good guys will open a three-game set at McAfee Colesium, a cavern of basebally weirdness home to the Oakland Athletics. The A’s were the other Philadelphia team for a long, long time, so consider this a meaningful rivalry, or something.

Jimmy Rollins returns home to Oakland, where he has a homer and two ribbies (three games). Phils starter Jamie Moyer has an approachable 4.19 ERA in his 25 starts at the Mac. Or the Fee. Whatever. We’ll just call it the Internet Virus Protection Colesium, or the IVPC. Against Oakland, Moyer has a 4.46 ERA, but it’s not like he’s faced these same guys. Most of the A’s are guys in their mid-to-late 20s, and are guys you haven’t much seen: Kurt Suzuki, Mark Ellis, Bobby Crosby, Jack Hannahan, Daric Barton, Ryan Sweeney, Travis Buck. Billyball: Feel the experience!

The Phils face Joe Blanton, who has struggled so far this year. He’s one of the players rumored as a future Phillie. Two things: The A’s won’t be giving up anything if they remain this good; a guy with a 4.81 ERA is actually an improvement over most of the rotation.

Geoff Jenkins is your designated hitter; Jayson Werth gets the start in right field. This should be par for the course over these next six. By the way, it’s the first late game of the year. I love late games! I also love drinking Starbucks Iced Doubleshots at 8:10 a.m.!

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (7-4) 4.09 ERA
Athletics: Joe Blanton (3-10) 4.81 ERA

Gametime: 10:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 65, sunny
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Werth, Jenkins, Feliz, Ruiz

Your gamenight beer: Ladies and gentleman: The ultimate girl beer. Stella Artois — I’ve had it once. Okay, my ex-girlfriend ordered it and I took a hearty sip. It was okay. Pretty average, actually. (Like her. Zing!) But it’s usually on tap at most bars, kind of a cousin to Heineken, which markets itself to men. So tonight that’s the beer — average, just like the Phils have been lately. Okay, below average. Have some sushi with Stella tonight — chicken is more appropriate, but I had sushi tonight, so you will too.

Go Phillies!

Personal/related note: I’m now doing weekly beer/food pairings in my newspaper’s weekly food/drink lifestyle page (of which I am editor). So listen to me, bitches.

  2. Tim Malcolm Says:

Note 2: I don’t know if you guys saw the post I made a few days back, but I wanted to thank everyone for the amazing Chase Utley retro jersey. You guys are great readers.

  3. Howard Says:

Stella Artois? There’s better beer out there than this stuff for a game.

  4. Tim Malcolm Says:

Oh sure, I know that, but there are 162 games and sometimes you have to go with mainstream picks. It’s about variety.

  5. Tim Malcolm Says:

Updates: Mets got killed by Seattle, 11-0. Braves lost. Marlins losing in ninth to Rays. Big game here.

  6. Clare Says:

I haven’t been here in ages because I don’t read things after we lose; however, I feel a win coming on!

  7. chris m Says:

    anybody still want arroyo???

  8. chris m Says:

phil says our big game pitcher is moyer so here it is

  9. Tim Malcolm Says:

Never did, don’t want him now. Horrible outing tonight.

  10. Tim Malcolm Says:

Victorino and Kurt Suzuki are from the same town, oddly enough.

  11. chris m Says:

howard cant poke it through that left side? hed rather just try to pull it? dont understand

  12. chris m Says:

we need to have better approach at the plate bc our AB’s make me wanna cry

  13. Tim Malcolm Says:

They should be hitting Blanton around.

  14. Phil Says:

    PAT THE BAT!!!

  15. Jason Says:

    Go Burrell!

  16. Phil Says:

Yeah Chris M, he’s doing awesome isn’t he?

  17. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Fine. All. E.

  18. Julie Says:

Stella is a girl beer? Really? I think of it more as the Miller Lite of Belgians, but maybe this is because I am a girl.

Just got to my computer and it looks like this game has been boring as hell…

  19. chris m Says:

phil… i didnt forget. im giving you your cred…..good AB’s by jenkins. he mite have a better chance to hit the ball if its not in the dirt

  20. Jason Says:

Gotta love Moyer. Throws 81 mph and saws the guy off.

  21. Phil Says:

Oh, I thought you meant it like, let’s see if Phil is right?

  22. Tim Malcolm Says:

Maybe it’s me, but every girl I know likes Stella, and will order it when ordering beer. Either that or Mich Ultra or Miller Lite.

Offense needs to get going one of these decades.

  23. chris m Says:

nah it was more like phil needs his credit if he has a good game here bc i dont give it too you that much in thwe past lol

  24. danny Says:

Moyer is out of his mind!

  25. Brian Michael Says:

Over in England, Stella (along with Fosters and Carlsberg) is the cheap beer. I used to buy 6 16oz cans (they sell most beers in pounders, since it’s about a pint) for 5 pounds or about $10. It was a good deal.

Jamie is dealing tonight. How soon before the wheels fall off…?

  26. danny Says:

Every Indie girl likes Stella, that’s for sure.

  27. danny Says:

4 BB’s and 29 strikeouts this month for Howard. That’s UNREAL!

  28. Tim Malcolm Says:

Wow. That was a ball beyond belief.

We need another few runs. And I need a drink.

Oh a double play because Howard pulled a grounder. What else is new?

  29. danny Says:

ANOTHER K! Have I been shrooming all night? Is this really happening?

  30. Jason Says:

    9 Ks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. Phil Says:

    Moyer is the man!

  32. Julie Says:

    I don’t even think Moyer believes this…

  33. Phil Says:

Thanks for giving me credit Chris M. You all know you wouldn’t mind seeing Moyer take game 1 of the WS…come on now? Who else is with me?

  34. danny Says:

course, Jenkins can’t get the runners over…

  35. Greg Says:

    Jenkins, you POS

  36. Phil Says:

Change the Jeltz award to the Ruiz award please.

  37. danny Says:

    HAHAHAH

  38. Greg Says:

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  39. PhillyFriar Says:

Haven’t been here for the game chat, but a brief anecdote: before Ruiz came to the plate, I said to myself, “I’ll bet my life savings (admittedly not much) that Ruiz grounds into a double play here.”

  40. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Boy, Ruiz is horrendous.

  41. Jason Says:

We all saw that coming from Ruiz.

  42. danny Says:

Seriously, there is no one I want up less in that situation than Ruiz, right?

  43. danny Says:

Now I understand why Charlie gives Pedro the light 3-0.. He’s got Fat Retard Ruiz following him.

  44. danny Says:

Really Jason? I expected a grand slam to the upper deck.

  45. danny Says:

It seems as though we are facing a line up as equally inept as ours! This is nice.

  46. Phil Says:

Manuel is a retard…shoulda put Durbin in.

  47. Jason Says:

One bad pitch at the wrong time. He had the A’s shut down.

  48. Tim Malcolm Says:

Great, the makings of yet another bad, bad loss.

  49. danny Says:

I’m excited for 6 losses in a row.

  50. Chris L Says:

Moyer’s pitching a shutout you keep him in — Manuel’s problem, as its been all year is not being willing to sit people when they don’t deliver — Ruiz is the prime example. Is there a chance he can be shipped off with a prospect or two to get us a pitcher?

  51. Greg Says:

What is this pussy “I can’t hit BS”? start bunting or something. Head out of asses, and get the F*&$ing bats out.

  52. danny Says:

Maybe Moyer will murder Ruiz tonight at the hotel.

  53. danny Says:

    RUIZ ISNT GOING ANYWHERE CHRIS

  54. Julie Says:

Yeah, I agree with Chris. Moyer has been great all night..you gotta give him the chance to pitch out of the inning. I bet Ruiz called that pitch…I blame him instead.

  55. Phil Says:

    hahahahaha danny.

  56. Tim Malcolm Says:

Ruiz blows. I’m absolutely sick of him.

  57. danny Says:

The best part is that Emil Brown totally sucks at baseball! HE’S AWFUL! 5 hr in 230+ AB’s

  58. Brian Michael Says:

Chris L, I disagree about Moyer and Manuel. One of Charlie’s worst traits since he became manager has been leaving pitchers in too long. I mean, if Moyer is pitching a shutout, wonderful, but he ain’t getting a complete game too. 6 innings is about his limit because batters start to figure him out by then. Sure he was cruising, so I won’t give Charlie grief for not getting the exact moment right of when to take him out, but figuring this part of the game out has never been his strong suit.

  59. danny Says:

Embree time? Luckily our lineup is designed to mash hard throwing lefties!

  60. Greg Says:

Why dont we give Rollins the season Jeltz? Where has he been ALL YEAR?
At least Howard has his stat padding games every now and then.

  61. danny Says:

Rollins has had a TON of clutch hits bro. Come on…

  62. Greg Says:

GODDAMMIT SOMEONE GET A HIT THAT MATTERS!

  63. danny Says:

Anyone else feel like it’s impossible that Howard hits one out here? What does that say about your 4 hitter? Shouldn’t have some feeling that tonight might be the night?

  64. Greg Says:

yes, im probably just exceedingly angry and haphazardly ranting

  65. Julie Says:

This ump is horrendous. He must be standing too close to Ruiz.

  66. danny Says:

I feel you Greg. I just resort to sarcasm to cope. Like: “Thanks for the single Ryan. Now we get to lose by only a run.”

  67. danny Says:

By the way, Tim will rename the Steve Jeltz award either the So or Carlos award about the same time the Phils aquire CC.

  68. Tim Malcolm Says:

I can’t take this crap. Charlie better go apeshit on these guys after the game.

  69. danny Says:

At least we got 6 hits tonight, I can hang my hat on that!

  70. Brian Michael Says:

Ruiz will have a chance for redemption in the 9th…

  71. Tim Malcolm Says:

Good time to say I don’t touch the Jeltz/Ashburn awards. Brian changes it.

  72. danny Says:

Please, in a year or so when Ruiz is a bad memory, please Brian rename it the Carlos Ruiz award.

  73. Chris L Says:

What will it take to get the FO to see Ruiz the same way many fans do, a decent/good backup but not an everyday starter? Even two years ago, Ruiz got the call over Coste more than once despite the numbers Chris put up. Why is he so great in their eyes?

I think Coste should be playing at least every other day. I know that he’s 35 or whatever but he doesn’t have catcher’s knees because he didn’t start catching until like 2000 and even then it wasn’t everyday.

  74. Greg Says:

I think Coste may call horseshit games. Ruiz is better defensively.

  75. Chris L Says:

By the way, Brian I think pulling pitchers is Charlie’s second biggest problem because it’s once again not wanting to tell someone they aren’t producing even if they’re trying their hardest (which is something that Charlie pushes for as he should)

  76. Greg Says:

    dear God.

  77. Phil Says:

Wow, Romero does not pitch well in the bay area.

  78. Chris L Says:

greg, what are you basing that on? A number of pitchers (current and past Phillies) are recorded as saying they love throwing to Chris. And i’ve never noticed a clear difference in terms of throwing arm, etc.

  79. Adam C. Says:

I can’t believe I stayed up for this crap. 2 outs in the 9th, and Romero serves one up…

  80. danny Says:

Jenkins should watch Cust’s instructional hitting video

  81. danny Says:

    That’s it! Give up Phillies.

  82. Adam C. Says:

I just want Feliz to get on base, so this can end with a Ruiz strike out or weak ground out…just get him out of town, please.

  83. Adam C. Says:

ok it’s done. time to be positive now…a 5 game winning streak starts tomorrow! What do you think?

  84. Phil Says:

This offense is pathetic right now. Everyone has been bashing Howard all year, but he’s been the only one doing anything lately. Then he has 2 bad games in a row and everyone bashes him again.

  85. Phil Says:

Hamels should be 11-3 and Moyer should be 9-3 right now, but this offense fucks so much up for them.

  86. rob Says:

    Phil:

    Try again.

As recently as two starts ago, Jamie Moyer led the league in run support.

  87. Phil Says:

Yeah, he did, but he shoulda won his last 2 starts. His offense didn’t help him out those games. He was also part of a 20 win start, which will boost his run support. He had a good streak there, but look at the game against the Marlins where he shut them down through 8 innings on 3 runs support. Only 1 of those 3 runs were earned too. He let up 6 runs in 12 innings in his past 2 starts. That’s not too shabby if you ask me, especially for a 45 year old man.

  88. fred Says:

coste calls a good game, according to many of the pitchers who have thrown to him. If you read his book then you’ll see just how many pitchers have requested that he starts behind the late when they start a game. Anyhow, he could call an absoloutly horrible game and still be more productive than Ruiz right now. If you go on baseball prospectus and check out their VORP’s than you’ll see that Coste is 11.0 or something and Ruiz is the least productive Phillie, with a VORP of -4. Jenkins and Ruiz both need to be benched, but i think Feliz has done ok this year, actually exceeding my expectations offensively whilst being as good as advertised at the hot corner.

  89. scot Says:

    I actually really like Stella.

I actually really hate this losing streak right now.

I actually went to bed with the Phils up one and Moyer cruising, and wake up to this. Ugh.

  90. AP Says:

Stella is good. This losing streak is KILLING me.

Can we sign Chuck Norris to a one-day contract?

  91. Brian Says:

There was no doubt Ruiz was hitting into the DP…….Moyer is the number 2 on this staff that’s not going to get it done.

Is there anyone who can explain what Coste did to deserve the shitty treatment he gets……I thought for sure he would start with Moyer they usually work well together.

Luckily the whole division continues to get its ass kicked Great to watch that tool Scott Olsen lose his decision after the Maroone Call to the Bullpen blew up in Florida’s faces last night. And looked like the same old mets again last night

Time for the Phils to wake up start hitting and build a division lead. Bench Ruiz cut Taguchi and let’s go!

  92. ryan Says:

never understood why stella is so expensive and overrated. i’d rather have bud light for god’s sake. and i’m a beer snob

  93. fred Says:

Not sure why but in england most people refer to it as the wife beaters drink. Maybe next time Myers starts it should be the beer of choice
