Gamenight: Phillies (43-37) At Rangers (40-40)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, June 27, 2008 06:10 PM

Another series, another hope that maybe, just maybe, this team wins it.

The Phillies are coming off a brutal 5-0 loss to the Athletics, where Rich Harden basically demoralized them. Now the Phils play the Rangers, and are visiting Rangers Ballpark for the first time. With tonight’s game the Phils will have played in every Major League ballpark, and have hosted every team in Philadelphia. I believe that makes the Phils the first team to do such.

It’s also game No. 81. Folks, after tonight we’re at the halfway mark of the season. Wow.

The Phils go up against Kason Gabbard. Kason is an incredibly rare name, something like the 880th most popular boy’s name in America. I think Gabbard and maybe a couple kids in West Virginia and Texas have this name.

The Phils bring Brett Myers out, who needs to be shut down. And the offense has to be better. They’re hitting .181 in their last eight games.

Rangers stud hitter Josh Hamilton is a gametime decision after being hit in the hand by a pitch.

Phillies: Brett Myers (3-9) 5.51 ERA
Rangers: Kason Gabbard (2-3) 4.96 ERA

Gametime: 8:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 96, sunny
Lineup: Werth/Utley/Rollins/Burrell/Howard/Feliz/Victorino/Coste/Bruntlett

Your gamenight beer: The hoppy Berkshire Maibock comes from Massachusetts, but is a very German beer. It’s light and a good beer for this time of year. As we try to focus in on this team getting a few hits, let’s take some easy sips, chow on some fried shrimp and just enjoy the fine-looking Rangers Ballpark and the hot, hot weather in Arlington tonight.

Go Phillies!

    Phils break out tonight.

  2. Greg Says:

    MUST-WIN series.
We were looking pretty damn good two weeks ago. Now its a 86-88 win pace depending on tonights outcome. I hope the Phils are taking their batting practice seriously.

I suppose we get the question answered tonight: Do the Phils just suck or can we just not play with superior AL pitching staffs?

And why the hell didn’t we get to play Seattle when everyone else in the division did? Interleague scheduling is BS. I can’t even begin to fathom the low-gic used on TOR, BOS, LAA, OAK, and TEX. Can someone throw me a bone here?

If Myers shits the bed again tonight, I will personally drive up to Philly for his next home start, autograph a Duracell D-cell and bank it off his forehead.

  3. NEPA Says:

Brett Myers is so good, how did we ever get so lucky?

  4. Geoff Says:

brett myers is the greatest pitcher of all time…at giving up runs in teh first inning

  5. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Dick Clark: Ready. Go.

A Pedro Feliz first-pitch out. A bad-looking Ryan Howard strikeout. The Phillies stranding multiple runners on base.

Woman: Things you’ve come to expect.

    Dick Clark: Right.

  6. Bill Says:

Myers either needs to move back to the bullpen or off the roster. If Tom Gordon is indeed hurt Myers could take his place and the Phillies could have Benson take his place in the rotation or better yet make a deal for a better starter.

  7. Geoff Says:

    gordon = DL.

myers = setup man or closer.

  8. Geoff Says:

if they have the luxury of readjusting myers to a setup man role i think hed be awesome

  9. Geoff Says:

stares at a home run pitch and then whiffs!

  10. Tim Malcolm Says:

(Keeping my mouth shut about Howard.)

  11. Keith Says:

    Thank God

  12. Geoff Says:

    YES! salami for pete happy!!!!!!!!!

  13. Tim Malcolm Says:

    PETE HAPPY!!!

  14. Brian Says:

    Yeah Pedro!

  15. Geoff Says:

DAMN IT! incompetence! great job, give the runs right back

  16. Geoff Says:

you can tell. if he cant get out of this. this is the end of brett myers as a starting pitcher for this team. theyll try and trade him now. he wont make another start.

  17. Geoff Says:

carrasco will be called up to fill the void. and the trade is made as soon as they can do it

  18. Geoff Says:

and thats it. hes done. goodbye starting brett myers

  19. Tim Malcolm Says:

I don’t know if that’s quite the end of Myers as a Phillie pitcher. But there could be a DL stint on the way.

  20. Paul Says:

Wow Myers. Guess you don’t really like getting handed a 5-1 lead… WTF?!

  21. Geoff Says:

its time to get out of the hosue for a bit. condrey is intolerable to watch

  22. Paul Says:

I’m glad they yanked Myers. That’s so poor. However, I don’t trust Condrey at all… I’m with Geoff, time to take a break from this one.

  23. Geoff Says:

you know what. mike t..NOW its official. this team FUCKING SUCKS BALLS! ONLY Shitty teams do stuff like that. theyll go back and beat up on national league garbage but they cant even beat a shitty american league team right now.

  24. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Ugh.

  25. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

I thought Condrey was only for mop up stuff. Aren’t guys like Madsen and even Durbin good for long inning stuff? I understand not using Durbin since he is probably the set up guy tonight, but why not Madsen for a couple innings?

  26. Tim Malcolm Says:

Yeah, maybe Madson should’ve been in there, going two innings or so.

  27. Tim Malcolm Says:

Moral of tonight: Brett Myers = Kason Gabbard.

  28. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

Good point. However, this does show, as much as people complain about the starting pitching, that the bullpen is still that good even with a guy like Condrey in there because those 3, 4, and 5 guys really haven’t failed to go 5 innings at least for the most part so there hasn’t been much reason to use condrey. And as I’m saying this, why doesn’t Coste play more again?

  29. Tim Malcolm Says:

That has to be the biggest frustration I have right there. WHY JIMMY. WHY?

  30. danny Says:

    Oh Jimmy. Ouch.

  31. danny Says:

I’m so happy with Myers start tonight and I can’t wait until he pitches against us some time in the future.

  32. Keith Says:

the reason why we dont play coste more is he has said that he will play worse if he plays more and suprisingly they are 15-17 when coste starts and 27-19 when ruiz starts.

  33. danny Says:

Jimmy Rollins is the slowest short stop since A Rod

  34. Keith Says:

I really think we should sit Howard against Lefties from now on

  35. Greg V. Says:

I’m boycotting the Phillies if I see Myers start again!

  36. Mike T. Says:

    Told ya.

  37. Rick Says:

This was undoubtedly myers last start as a phillie. He will be transitioned back to the pen to setup Lidge. Otherwise he will be hitting the DL. He’s always been a headcase and i’m not sure he can even close for awhile after this half. Bring on carrasco. I Don’t think it’s a coincidence that benson is starting in syracuse on sunday either. In buffalo now and may hit the game on sunday if there’s time. If so, i’ll try to post my take on his outing for anyone interested.

  38. Greg Says:

get him OFF my team. ANYONE can pitch better than him at this point. JD Durbin would have a lower ERA

  39. Greg Says:

This is where the old Phillies would have won it

  40. thom Says:

    the phillies need help quick

  41. AP Says:

The Phillies a few weeks ago would have won this game.

    What is going on!?!??!

  42. Tommy A Says:

Right now 7.5 on the Richter Scale couldn’t shake up this team. Something’s gotta give. I don’t really blame Seanez or even the “not quite enough” top of the ninth…I blame the guy who was on the mound at the start of the game.

So long Brett. Not so nice knowin’ ya.

    Bring on Carrasco!!

    Somebody…DO SOMETHING!!!

  43. Greg V. Says:

    ABM

    ANYONE BUT MYERS

Not that the bats deserve any credit except for Feliz and Coste. This was it for Myers. It has to be. Even Mitch Williams is saying it now! Ken Mandel is hinting at it! Time for ANYTHING ELSE!

  44. PhillyFriar Says:

Just to state the obvious, there’s something very wrong with this team right now.

If I were Pat Gillick: I’d DFA Taguchi to send a message to the team that this crap won’t cut it. And I’d seriously consider marketing Myers as a bullpen piece and calling up Happ to replace him. The fact is, when you feel more comfortable about a game when Adam Eaton is taking the mound than when your Opening Day starter is, you know there’s a problem.

    Please, Cole, save us…..

  45. Tommy A Says:

When Myers’ “Japan Trade” prank went down this spring, Kendrick said he wouldn’t seek revenge. Well, maybe Kendrick’s actually gotten his revenge on Myers by outpitching his sorry fuckin’ ass all season!

  46. Rob Cowie Says:

Put this one in the L column for the fightin phils.

This team needs to send out the SOS immeadietly

  47. chris m Says:

ryan where you at bc i wanna hear what stupid shit you gotta say now

  48. danny Says:

It seems like a long shot that we’re in first come the all star break.

  49. Geoff Says:

Oh, now they WILL go back and beat up on their own shitty league/division. but the texas rangers? theyre not even coming close to making the playoffs. they have shit ass garbage pitching. they cant beat that slop? whaaat?

this team is a total, complete, FRAUD! they cant beat crappy AL teams, let alone they dont even belong on the field with the good ones (except when hamels starts)

i like kendrick and moyer sometimes is ok. but lets face it, hamels is all theyve got that really scares people all around mlb.

the lineup cant hit good pitchers when they come across them. although nobody hits good pitchers. but they can still get a few runs off them. like 2. how do you do that? dont swing at the first pitch. that doesnt even work in videogames. its not going to work in real life.

theres no one on the bench that is worth a damn against good competition, except dobbs who usually is better than that. these guys need to be reamed hard by charlie. i dont think hes done that yet. go get thrown out of a game or two. i dont need to see myers, jenkins, taguchi, or eaton anymore. eaton just doesnt win games even when he pitches well.

  50. Geoff Says:

they will still win the division and still make the playoffs. because the national league is THAT weak. especially NL east.

  51. Bruce Says:

Not to belittle Phillies’ hitting woes but they are not the only NL team struggling in interleague play against the AL. So far in tonight’s interleague play, the AL teams won NINE of eleven and have dominated in a hugh majority of series played this month.

Texas is no slouch on offense as they lead the majors in runs scored with 445 (counting their score tonight). There are no easy outs in the line-up except for the catcher tonight. The team as a whole is hitting .278.. third in the majors behind Bosox and the Cubs.

Tomorrow night will see how Hamels does against that line-up and hopefully he has some run support.

  52. Rick Says:

So now that interleague play has nearly come to an end (thank-god), what do you people think is the reason the NL has been slapped around by the AL in ILP for the past several seasons?

Do you attribute it mostly to the DH, expansion teams, drafting and scouting, etc? I’m just curious.

Hope you don’t mind my post Tim, but this is something I’m interested in hearing other people’s opinion’s about. It’s obvious that there is an imbalance and I have some ideas why, but would like to hear other’s.

  53. Geoff Says:

The DH is important. However, I think the AL has had better pitching and higher payrolls. the DH leads to more offense. More offense leads to the need for more pitching. More pitching and more offense to counter that pitching can only be had by higher payrolls.

  54. doubleh Says:

I think the AL teams are better because they have overall better pitching. Period. They have to because of the DH. They can never take a batter off in the AL like NL pitchers can. Save for a few pitchers who can hit, an NL pitcher can throw a mistake pitch to a pitcher batting and (most) times, not get burned.

  55. NateB Says:

It’s all about MONEY. High payrolls in the AL. 5 of the 6 top payrolls are American League teams. The teams in that league buy all the All-Star players. Unfortunately the DH produces more fans because the non-baseball-thinkers can enjoy a game of all offense. Too much “ADD” these days to enjoy a pitcher’s duel. It’s not even pure baseball when the pitcher doesn’t bat. I hate that league. I’m so glad the Phils are in the pure league. Strategy is the name of the game here.

  56. Tommy A Says:

NateB — For the first 30 years the DH was around, I was a staunch NL rules supporter –No DH for the exact same reasons you mentioned. But now, I’m on the other side of the fence. The AL is passing the NL by. I love strategy, but I’m not running back to my seat to watch Kyle Kendrick hit.

The game has changed. And although I wish both leagues had remained “pure” as you say…when one clearly has the advantage offensively, it’s time for the other to wake up and catch up.
