Gamenight: Phillies (43-38) At Rangers (41-40)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, June 28, 2008 07:28 PM

Break out the flotilla.

Vicente Padilla starts for the first time against his former team. In David Murphy’s Phillies notebook today, Padilla tells us it was the weather that made him so bad — when he was bad — for the Phils. A quick look at his splits with the Phils showed his ERA was a little better in July and August, somewhere around 3.40. Oddly enough, he had an amazing 2.97 ERA in 32 starts at Veterans Stadium. So is the heat? Maybe. This year he’s been pretty good for the Rangers — better than 4/5 of the Phils rotation.

Luckily the best fifth is up there tonight. Hamels is coming off a strong start against Los Angeles, a start where he couldn’t get a win. He could use one, and so could this team.

The lineup tonight is somewhere between normal and crazy. Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino are back at the top, but Pat Burrell is still in the cleanup spot with Greg Dobbs getting the six-hole. Chris Coste gets the start at catcher and Dobbs is your DH.

Phillies: Cole Hamels (7-5) 3.27 ERA
Rangers: Vicente Padilla (10-3) 3.74 ERA

Gametime: 8:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 95, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Burrell/Howard/Dobbs/Feliz/Werth/Coste

Your gamenight beer: We’re starting the second half with my all-time, No. 1, top-of-the-shelf favorite beer. That’s right, this is my favorite — better than all the 100+ I’ve drank in my young drinking life. Ladies and gents: UFO Raspberry Hefeweizen. Yes, a fruit beer. The raspberry taste doesn’t overwhelm at all, and it doesn’t quite taste like a beer, but you know it’s a beer. It’s refreshing, can make you a bit tipsy after a couple and is perfect for a summer evening. Like this one. What to eat? It goes with a lot, but I recommend pouring some in baked chicken and going with that. Enjoy. And come on Phils!

Go Phillies!

here we go again another really bad start and what is up with csn tonight the broadcast is crap and the scorebar at the top stinks.

  2. Tim Malcolm Says:

That’s how you score some runs.

  3. Geoff Says:

dont like the scoreboard. you gotta stick with the yellow squares man. nice alert baserunning by pete happy! hes been decent this year actually when i take a look at what hes done. i think ive been a little too hard onhim.

great clutch hit by jayson werth

  4. thom Says:

way to go werth!!!!!!!! lets go cole get atleast 8 tonight from u cause myers killed the pen.

  5. Geoff Says:

impatient hitters always ignore the pitchers trends and get fooled by sinkers

  6. Geoff Says:

    nice!!!

  7. Tim Malcolm Says:

Safe to say, the Utley slide is over.

  8. Geoff Says:

how is padilla a 10 win guy in the american league? that guy hasnt gotten any better, hes garbage just like he was when he was here.

the biggest phony ace weve ever had

  9. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Ho baby!

  10. Geoff Says:

    nice one by howard

  11. thom Says:

big man big power i love it lets keep on the gas tonight.

  12. chris m Says:

nice…scares me how this team lives on the long ball though…6 out of the 7 last nite and half tonite

  13. thom Says:

they live and die on the longball but i think this lineup will maufacture runs later in the year like last year when they made the run.

  14. Geoff Says:

yeah i would tend to think maybe one of the lesser regulars in the lineup needs to be moved just to get a more patient regular hitter to change the culture and mentality there. aaron rowand wanst a whiffer, he made contact a lot. they definitely miss that element.

i htink jenkins, though he has no value, has to go and be replaced in a platoon/4th man role (someone who plays a lot) by someone who is more patient a hitter. the GM has to shake things up a bit and say that hes not going to tolerate impatient hitting with all of the legitimate talent in this lineup

  15. Geoff Says:

coste is so much better than ruiz at the plate its like night and day

  16. Geoff Says:

i go back and forth about shane victorino, but hes really impatient. he has trade value though. i think having someone more patient than him of similar ability is a nice thing to have..

  17. Fran Says:

Howard hit that ball a mile

  18. Robbi P Says:

They fixed the scoreboard, now you can know the balls and strikes. Got freaking monkeys working the scoreboard!

  19. Geoff Says:

you would think the comcast graphical interface team would have a better overlay

  20. thom Says:

csn road games should all be in hd like csn chi with the cubs and whitesox and sny like the mets insted of the widescreen.

  21. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Good. Game is official.

  22. Tim Malcolm Says:

Oh, not yet since the Rangers are losing. Is that an AL rule?

  23. Geoff Says:

the only thing that is keeping rollins form being trade bait is you really cant lose someone who is that good of a defensive player

  24. Geoff Says:

good point my the sarge: you dont feel like a true athlete if you cant take at bats as a pitcher

  25. Geoff Says:

for whatever reason, the sarge and t-mac have better chemistry than some other combos

  26. thom Says:

i agree i think harry and wheels is the wheels know it all session and harry ignores him making it annoying.

  27. Geoff Says:

4 runs? what the hell is wrong with cole

  28. Geoff Says:

    yeah i cant stand wheeler.

  29. Tommy A Says:

It’s 9:36 and we need more runs. C’mon Phils, don’t blow this one.

  30. thom Says:

i want to get a few more

  31. Tommy A Says:

Coste should play as much as humanly possible. Bring up Jaramillo and make Ruiz the bullpen catcher. What? I can’t dream a little?

  32. thom Says:

i want marson more then jaramillo.

  33. Tim Malcolm Says:

Boy I love when grounders are hit to Feliz.

  34. Tim Malcolm Says:

Marlins losing 6-2 in the ninth; Dan Uggla left the game with an apparent ankle injury.

  35. chris m Says:

nice to see utley go the other way with a line drive…i dont mind rollins trying for that with 2 outs

  36. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Oh, shit Chase!

  37. chris m Says:

feliz has really stepped up his D…the beguinning of the year i was skeptical about it with all his error to start the season but hes come along way

  38. chris m Says:

this is howards fault…he had all day to get in front of the ground ball….r-o-u-t-i-n-e

  39. chris m Says:

instead of dobbs dhing he should be playing in howard position…his defense is not getting better! its an insult they dont give him an error on that…thanks jc for making that so interesting…maybe they did give him an error

  40. Phil Says:

Lights out Lidge!!! I miss him.

  41. chris m Says:

“lights out lidge” phil jinxed it

  42. Phil Says:

I’m starting to think I may have. :(

  43. Phil Says:

Oh no…Milton Bradley is up…mark him up as another Phillies killer.

  44. Phil Says:

YES!!! Didn’t jinx that shit!!! He is Lights out Lidge. He gives a new definition to lol.

  45. chris m Says:

is milton the same jackass that came into philly last year as a padre and started showing up the fans? if so he got what he deserved

  46. chris m Says:

    ha

  47. danny Says:

    YES! phil ain’t jinxed nothin’

  48. Tim Malcolm Says:

    … And BREATHE.

  49. chris m Says:

howards defense is a disgrace…i almos cost us the game

  50. danny Says:

just got home. finally manual puts burrell between utley and howard.

  51. Phil Says:

Thank god they won…it looks like our offense is waking up too.

  52. Geoff Says:

at least they beat up on padilla. hes total garbage. nice win

  53. Bruce Says:

Great to see Howard continue to produce those all important RBIs… now has 67 to lead the NL!!

    Utley appears to be back!

Rollins continues to be an enigma; often impatient at bat. I thought he ran through a stop sign and was a dead duck at home plate in his attempt for an inside the park HR in the 6th inning.

Great to see Victorino back in his no 2 hole. An offensive catalsyt who laid down yet another successful drag bunt and later scored. As a baseball purist, it’s a beautiful sight to see.

Hamels pitched well enough in spite of having command problems with his pitches at times.

Bullpen managed to hold one of the best offensive clubs in the majors culminating with Lidge’s 19th save. He did allowed 2 hits in the 9th inning but was clutch for the third out.

  54. Tim Malcolm Says:

Rollins has to see more pitches. But that’s always been his MO it seems. Still, it was good to see him look interested with that attempted Inside the Parker. I love Vic — even when he doesn’t get hits he seems to do good work. Perfect two-hole hitter.
