Gamenight: Phillies (44-38) At Rangers (41-41)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, June 29, 2008 04:17 PM

The first really well-constructed Phils win in some time put the Phils two games up on the East. Now the Phils will try to win a series for the first time since they were in Atlanta. Jamie Moyer — who seems to find ways to win big games — will be on the mound in a favorable matchup, as the Rangers counter with the barely tested Eric Hurley.

I originally wrote that Geoff Jenkins should have a big game, but he couldn’t unless it’s off the bench. He’s sitting for Jayson Werth tonight while Greg Dobbs is DH. Last night Chase Utley had a big game, netting three hits (all extra-basers) while knocking his 23rd homer of the season.

After this one the Interleague schedule will close (thankfully). This season the Phillies are 4-10 against the American League. Yowza. Then it’s onto Atlanta to start a giganormous 10-game stretch to close the first half unofficial.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (7-5) 4.09 ERA
Rangers: Eric Hurley (0-1) 4.24 ERA

Gametime: 6:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 87, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Burrell/Howard/Dobbs/Feliz/Werth/Ruiz

Your gamenight beer: Yesterday I gave you my favorite beer, now I’ll give you my fallback option, my tried and true go-to when there’s nothing new or great to be had. It’s Blue Moon. Really, it’s the perfect fallback beer: A good but not great style beer made by a microbrew. It’s popular, but not too popular to be everywhere. Yet a lot of bars carry it. Eat a nice salad with it. That’s how you do it.

Go Phillies!

  1. fred Says:

jenkins absoloutley shouldn’t be in the lineup. Howard should DH and dobbs shold play 1st

  2. Geoff Says:

thats what im talking about. what is he doing on this roster at all?

  3. Tim Malcolm Says:

Wow. Everybody’s so harsh on Jenkins (there is reason to be, but still). He isn’t in the lineup tonight and I changed the descript to show that.

  4. Geoff Says:

if theyre so concerned with saving money there are players in AAA and AA who can give you what he gives you and who has upside. all he is doing, with taguchi, is holding back the development of younger players with more upside. totally pointless, worthless, waste of a signing along with So-So.

  5. Mike W. Says:

Anyone have a report on Benson today???? If he was good, let him pitch, sit myers.

  6. Mike T. Says:

    1. Yo Tim, how much does a case of UFO Raspberry Hefeweizen usually run? I’m thinking about grabbing a case or two for the beach this coming weekend. Can’t believe it took you this long to do Blue Moon - one of my top 5’s.

    2. This is a question to all: When the Phillies win a game, and the following game is at home, they play a re-cap video on the jumbotron after the top of the 1st inning. They’re always perfectly edited, and they’re usually tracked with some John Williams, Pirates of the Caribbean/Jurassic Park type music — just great stuff to watch seconds before the Phils bat in the bottom of the 1st.

Does anyone know where to find these videos?

  7. Mike T. Says:

    Here’s the Benson line:
IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA
    4.0 5 4 4 0 1 0 9.00

  8. Geoff Says:

    wow. thats horrible.

  9. Geoff Says:

why would you want taht on your mlb team? thats a 33 year old veteran.

  10. Mike T. Says:

Q: “Does Benson have anything left?”
    A: Apparently not.

  11. Mike T. Says:

There goes J Roll swinging on 3-0, and dogging it to first.

  12. chris m Says:

why doesnt directv have this game!!!! damint

  13. Geoff Says:

jroll has fallen far and fast. it may be useful to get rid of him. this guy hasnt contributed at all this year really. they could get a TON of guys for him, maybe solve their depth problem. oh the little retard gets caught stealing and the inning is over.

any AL teams need a shortstop?

he has become willie mays hays in the beginning of major league 2

  14. Geoff Says:

    kris benson should retire.

  15. Geoff Says:

shit. this is going to be a high scoring game. moyer is not the guy to send out against this team.

  16. Your Beer Knowledge Is Week Says:

Blue Moon is a macrobrew, not a microbrew. It’s made by the terrible Coors company.

  17. Mike T. Says:

    Your spelling is weak.

  18. Brian Michael Says:

Blue Moon was first brewed by the microbrewery inside of Coors Field in Denver.

  19. danny Says:

    Hahaha:

    “Your Beer Knowledge Is Week”

I love we bloggin’ Phillies fans.

  20. Greg V. Says:

Blue Moon sucks and so does this game! Drink Hoegaarden.

  21. danny Says:

Ah, the Phils get schooled by another teenager.

  22. Geoff Says:

    this is bad man.

you have to pound young inexperienced pithcing like this. hes only made 4 starts before today.

totally unacceptable. if they cant win this then they better reevaluate the entire team and make changes accordingly.

  23. danny Says:

    YES RYAN YES!

  24. Geoff Says:

good situational hitting by ryan there. fights off a jam pitch in on his hands and gets it into the outfield.

  25. Geoff Says:

time to jump all over this rangers bullpen slop.

  26. Geoff Says:

    aww dobbs. come on man

  27. danny Says:

    Back to the bench Dobbs

  28. thom Says:

well madson is out there to long.

  29. fred Says:

why the fuck is howard not DH. Dobbs is clearly a better fielder yet he’s DHing. That’s just negligence by Manuel. This is embarrasing and i’ve stayed up till 2 in the bloody morning for this in England. What the hell has gone wrong with this team

  30. Tim Malcolm Says:

My fault, Blue Moon is a macro, and that is what I meant to write. Please, don’t ever question my beer knowledge.

  31. Phil Says:

    This offense is a disgrace.

  32. Phil Says:

I’d rather have the fucking bad new bears playing instead of this team right now…

  33. Geoff Says:

and they wrap up a feeble showing in interleague play with a disgusting performance today

  34. Ron Washinton Says:

Thanks Phillies. You guys have given our shit for arms pitching staff some well needed confidence heading into the 2nd half. Enjoy your time in 1st now, it wont be long before you’re in 4th like us.

  35. Geoff Says:

this team is not even close to being good enough to win the world series in its current makeup. the national league is garbage so theyll win their division again, after that i dont know.

  36. Gavin Says:

If they continue to play .200 baseball they won’t win any division. God almighty what the hell has happened to our fucking hitters? Ever since that 20 run game in St. Louis they haveto be the worst offensive team in MLB. How does a whole fucking team go into a slump? Milt Thompson needs to head out with Myers.

  37. Joshua Says:

Geoff, You are delusional. If the phillies keep losing every series, they will never win the division. The mets/Braves/marlins, whoever gets it will only have to win like 88 games to get that division

  38. Geoff Says:

theyll win their division because it SUCKS! all fo the teams suck. if they cant win it, then they suck too

  39. Geoff Says:

if they fail to win this division and make the playoffs in THIS division in the nl, the team has to be compeltely blown up from the top down and sold to owners who want to win

  40. Geoff Says:

keep chase utley brad lidge cole hamels and a couiple other guys. if they dont win the division, everyone else goes.

  41. Keith Says:

Dont talk bad about Benson yet, it was his third start of any kind in a year and a half. He is just trying to work on getting his control down. Now if he were to go out and walk a whole lot of people then yes panic, these first coupe of games he has pitched would be like spring training.

  42. Joshua Says:

you’re saying tehy’ll win the division becasue the division sucks, but ur not realizing the mets are playing 500 ball, yet the phillies are not right now. if this was to continue, then mathematically, the mets end up lapping the phils

  43. Groty Says:

This game is more deserving of a bitter IPA.

  44. danny Says:

    Perhaps Arrogant Bastard.

  45. Geoff Says:

i think golson can give you everything vic does. even if hes a little rough around the adges. brandon watson can help too. if you can get a good starting pitcher with more than one year on his deal ill go for that. in soem kind of package deal

  46. Geoff Says:

they need to take impatience out of the lineup.

  47. Bruce Says:

    I repeat….

“Some here have suggested calling up Greg Golson from AA. That would not be the right move at the moment. He is on the DL with an wrist injury and hasn’t played in over two weeks. His strikeout-to-walk ratio remains poor (77-14). It was reported in the past, he has struggled with off speed stuff and that’s in double A. No… bringing him up simply to be a fourth outfielder isn’t the way to go.”

I think you will see the first major move by the Phillies before thursday’s game vs Atlanta. Myers, who is scheduled to start will go to the bullpen. Chad Durbin will exchange roles and start in his place. There is an another possible option that Happ or Mazone may be called up from AAA with Condrey going off the roster. Let’s see what happens.

  48. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

You guys have got to be kidding me with the talk of trading Jimmy Rollins. I almost caught on earlier in the year with the trade Howard stuff, but trading Jimmy is just a ridiculous idea. You cannot take small parts of a baseball season and extrapolate that much, you have to really take the whole thing to see what is going on, and like Tim said Jimmy is really right on his averages accounting for the injury. I was also going to say something about Golson but Bruce did it for me, he seems to come to bat like Ryan Howard without the occasional HR and RBI. The whole idea that it can’t get any worse is kind of ridiculous when it comes to many of the comments (although I am there with Myers), but, for the most part the guys are in the Minor Leagues for a reason.

This team needs another starter and they need to jump start that offense, I expect them to have an offensive run after the all-star break that runs parallel to what they are doing now and it will even out and it will once again be fun to watch games.

  49. Geoff Says:

Actually if they had someone in their farm system ready to come up and play defense as well as he does id be all for getting rid of his arrogant ass. but they just dont so you have to tolerate willie mays hays until he gets his act together.

shane victorino is not a 2 hole hitter. jimmy rollins is a 2 hole hitter. they dont have a leadoff hitter. leadoff hitters get on base. they dont swing at the first pitch and they are patient. when they get on base they do damage which he does. but hes gotta get it together and work a few leadoff walks.
