Gamenight: Red Sox (44-28) At Phillies (41-30)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, June 16, 2008 05:31 PM
The Phillies jump into Interleague Play tonight with the first of a three-game set against the American League’s best team, the World Champion Boston Red Sox. It’ll be a doozy here in Philly; Red Sox fans will be invading the Bank, but Phils fans will show their spirit just as much. The series is being highly touted as a World Series preview, and no doubt it is.
Cole Hamels gets the start after a great performance in a loss to the Marlins. He’ll face Bartolo Colon, who has been pretty decent since joining the Sox and coming back from injury. He represented a possible addition to the team’s pitching corps at a low-risk/high-reward standpoint. Instead the Phillies took a flier with Kris Benson, who is still slowly rehabbing in Clearwater.
The Phils and Sox represent two of the country’s more glamorized franchises. Big-name players abound. Whose big-five would you rather take? The Phils’ Howard, Utley, Burrell, Rollins and Hamels or the Sox’ Ortiz, Ramirez, Lowell, Beckett and Dice-K?
Of course, Ortiz and Dice-K are both injured and not playing tonight, though Matzusaka is in Lehigh Valley pitching against the IronPigs in a rehab start. Enjoy this one; this series should be fun.
A thunderstorm watch is in effect.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (6-4) 3.27 ERA
Red Sox: Bartolo Colon (4-1) 3.41 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 81, thunderstorms
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Ruiz, Hamels

Your gamenight beer: Don’t worry, I won’t recommend anything from the Boston Beer Co. (Sam Adams) or the Harpoon Brewery. No, I’m staying local. Tonight it’s Flying Fish ESB Amber Ale. It’s a top-three for me, a dry but delicious ale that gets you tipsy quick. Good for warm nights. Eat a nice steak dinner with it.
Go Phillies!

You forgot Victorino who is the little engine that could.
June 16th, 2008 at 5:48 pm
ugh…can’t really afford a sweep, but i think it’s inevitable
June 16th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
Way to be positive Joshua. We’re going up against 2 youngsters and over the hill pitchers. Thank god we don’t have Dice-K and Beckett to face.
June 16th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
If you go to the game, ask each and every person around you wearing Red Sox gear where they’re from. I got a twenty spot that says fewer than 40% of them will be New Englanders.
June 16th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
My gf and me were trying to go to one of these games, and I told her if we some how managed to get tickets that I refused to go with her if she wore her Red Sox hat. haha
June 16th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Why am I the only person that gets shit for being pessimistic?
June 16th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
You say that the Phillies aren’t a good team, which is totally untrue. They are a good team, they just aren’t a great team. Let’s see how the Phillies do this week against the best 2 teams in baseball.
Also, is anyone watching Comcast Sportsnet? Reuben Amaro Jr. is on saying how Myers needs to get his act together. He said they are shopping around and trying to get another top of the rotation starter.
June 16th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
oh man, it drives me crazy how being a red sox fan is the in thing right now…i think it’s worse then the yankee bandwagoners of the 90s
June 16th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
So if we go 2-4 against the Sox and Angels, are we still a good team?
June 16th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
I’m excited to see how Cole does against a premier lineup like this. Of course he won’t have them at full strength, but they’re still dangerous. I’ll be there tomorrow night, just hoping and praying that they don’t tee off on Moyer. I think tonight is a must win for them. Between Moyer and Kendrick, we can probably split the last two games, so it’s up to Cole to get us the series win. I want to see him come out and prove that he should be on the NL all-star team tonight. Go Phils!
June 16th, 2008 at 6:32 pm
No, I said if we win 3 out of 6.
June 16th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Great pick on the beer! I am hoping the Phillies are so sick about that loss yesterday that they take it out tonight and get this homestand started right. I am a little worried about the next six games. Boston and the Angels are as good of teams as there is.

June 16th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
They are the best 2 teams in baseball. I’m contemplating whether or not I think the Phillies are 3rd. We’ll see after this weekend.
June 16th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
the phillies are not 3rd, haha
after this week, you’ll see why
June 16th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
They are the best in the NL, I don’t follow the AL enough to see if one of those teams are 3rd. The Rays might be.
June 16th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
The Angel are good, but I think they’ve overachieved a little thusfar. I’m a big believer in run differential, and they’re barely over .500 in that category. They just keep winning close games, like the Diamondbacks of last year. Not trying to say they’re a bad team, but 2nd best is a stretch. I’d say Red Sox, Cubs, and Phils could fill out the top three very easily.
June 16th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
i thought the chicago cubs were the best in the NL…but philly fans can dream, can’t they?
June 16th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
I’m heading to the game shortly for some prime JD Drew heckling seats in RF.
I chugged a Flying Fish Farmhouse Ale at the bar at 30th Street Station – recommended as an alternate brew for tonight 6.5%.
June 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
Josh ~ no way the cubs are the best. out of the 19 games they play a year against the Pirates they have already played 12 and they have played more games against the NL West then most out of division teams. I know they have the best record but they have not played a tough schedule yet
June 16th, 2008 at 7:06 pm
VITAMIN WATER
try it… it worked for Big Papi!
June 16th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
Maybe Brett just needs some of that?
June 16th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
God I hate Manny and no yuk in the line up
June 16th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
It worked so well he is on the DL
June 16th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
Dude, if Linda Cohn gets word of what these analysts are saying about the Phils, she’ll have their asses fired.
June 16th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
I hope Drew and Manny die
June 16th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
please strike jd out
June 16th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
finally a lead off homer for jimmy
June 16th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
YEPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
June 16th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Not the time for Utley to slump…
June 16th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Yeah Ryan, you filthy asshole!
June 16th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
THATA BOY!
June 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Phils are definitely contenders for best team in the league right now.
Don’t let a 5-4 road trip make you pessimistic, especially since that’s better than .500 where there are only a handful of teams that have as good a record away from home for the season. Phils being one btw.
June 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Fuckin a Howard! That’s what I’m saying!!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Ryan Howard is starting to become my hero all over again. AND WHAT A CATCH BY HAMELS!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
YEAH RUIZ! WHATALOSER YOU ARE!
June 16th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Bartolo is one fat ass, ill tell you what boy
June 16th, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Okay Utley, time to stop slumping. Both table setters are on the bags.
June 16th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
And Utley blows it again!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Let him slump, it happens, just need everyone else to pick him up for another week or so
June 16th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
It’d be nice to ever have Utley, Howard, and Rollins hot at once. But that just doesn’t happen apparently.
June 16th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
That’s why I’m frustrated. I’m not as frustrated with Utley as I am the fact he’s slumping at a bad time.
June 16th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Dustin Pedroia has Hamels figured out and T Mac pisses me off with his stupid mid game interview. He almost makes me want to watch the game on ESPN.
June 16th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
HOWARD IS BACK!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
*maybe*
June 16th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
honestly, let us please put to bed this stupid “trade howard” bullshit. It’s so dumb. it’s the reason why we get a bad name as philadelphia fans. the dude is 2nd in the NL in RBI. 1st on the team in RBI. and has 18 homers and is only blatantly heating up with the weather. no more complaining.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:04 pm
I just think everyone was frustrated, myself included.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
I would still trade Howard for pitching….
June 16th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Depends on the pitcher(s) Danny.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Welcome to the National League Red Sox! Yes, you have to hit your pitcher after your 8 hitter doubles.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
I agree Phil
June 16th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
haha well said Danny. Anyway, onto trading Howard for a pitcher, he better net someone young like Lincecum or Volquez or someone extremely proven like Sabathia or Lackey.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
were to cheap to sign howard so get rid of him for a ton and sign cole….dont say hes back till hes back please…. 2 good games and 2 ok games and 40 bad gmaes doesnt mean hes back
June 16th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
2 good games and 2 okay games? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen 3 good games and 1 okay game.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:17 pm
howard isnt worth wat hes goin gto demand…200+ k’s each year aint worth close to a-rod number no matter how many homeruns. money could be better stuff then howard plus the prospects we’d net to stay good for years
June 16th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Well, trade him before 2011 not now.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
sry phil big deal…you can’t call him back after 4 games!! he did this in houstan…. how about we be inteligant fans and call him back when he actually comes back.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
why not trade him why hes worth more? were winning without him
June 16th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
I actually do think he’s back now. I think his dad grounded him when he was at home for being a choke artist.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
It depends on what we can get Chris…why trade him for prospects right now? I’d rather have Howard when we’re trying to win a championship rather than some prospects for the future.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
well then say you think hes back bc in reality hes not yet
June 16th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
id rather have the prospects… somebody in his spot would do half his production and that would be fine…plus the guy cant play d
June 16th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Oh great…Hamels just let up 2 in a row one to that asshole JD Drew.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
sign pat and cole….thats bbetter then having burell leave and still having howard
June 16th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
phil this is a good poll question….pat or ryno? i take pat and bring back prospects for ryno
June 16th, 2008 at 8:29 pm
i think that will the offseason question
June 16th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
I agree with you Chris M, but not right now. Offseason yes, not right now.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
ya thats what i mean to …im talkin offseason not now
June 16th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
thats the sign of a slump
June 16th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Oh, that’s what I was saying. I wouldn’t trade him for prospects right now. It’s not worth it. I’d trade him right now for an incredible pitcher though.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Exactly what I was thinking. Utley needs to step it up.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
howard looks confident though
June 16th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Yeah, I really do believe his dad said some encouraging words to him.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Jenkins is worthless
June 16th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
howard’s been great the past few games.
i do agree with chris on a few counts that if it’s between signing cole long term or howard, you sign cole. and i do agree to keep burrell next year over signing howard long term, especially if you can get value for howard in a trade.
but to say a guy has been awful for 40 games when he’s leading the team in rbi’s still makes me laugh. a lot.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
This is the type of pitching perfromance that can set Hamels apart. The 2 HR suck but solo jobs rearly hurt. Hamels has looked really good thus far.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
jenkins, more than any other phils signing is the one that drives me crazy.
we have people complaining burrell isn’t worth his money, myers, eaton, howard, you name it.
and we give jenkins 14 million over 2 years to be a bad platoon player. that’s the worst gillick decision to me, by far.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
damnit boys!!!! keep it going!! a howard cycle would be the most laughable cycle in history!!! 2 more at bats!!
June 16th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
in serousness, it’s good to see howard picking up slack when utley has been awful the past few games.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
FUCK JENKINGS SWINGING AT THE FIRST PITCH OF A NEW PITCHER – ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?
June 16th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
If I were Howard I’d try for that single so hard. haha
June 16th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Cole Hamels is a heartthrob
June 16th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
can we please get off of howards back a little, he is what he is with the strikeouts, but he is batting over 300 with RISP and he is now tied for the NL lead in RBIS. Also, do you remember how at this time last year Burrell was terrible and by the end of the year he was at his career averages. so once the year is over howard is going to have 40-50 homers and 130-140 rbis and bat somewhere around 260-280.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
came in batting .329 with RISP, and is 2-2 tonight i think
June 16th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
I dunno what it sounds like on tv, but there looks to be a lot fewer Boston fans than expected.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
thank you keith, i’ve been trying to be a voice of reason (in the wilderness) for several days now.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
It’s because of how incredibly hard they made it to get tickets. It helped pick out the Red Sox fans so that only Phillies fans could go.
To those of you watching CW not ESPN did anyone notice that they showed Hamels in the dugout and he was talking to Kendrick, Eaton, and Moyer, but Myers wasn’t with them? It was like that all game too. There were several times they zoomed in on the 4 of them chatting it up. They’re probably talking about how to pitch against these guys and other useful information, but the head case is probably in the clubhouse beating his wife.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
I was thinking the same thing, Brian. And I LOVE it. It’s Philadelphia DAMNIT!!! Hopefully all the Boston fans will stay home tomorrow and watch the Celtics lose, while keeping an eye on the Red Sox losing as well.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
no problem scot, also Durbin has to be one of the best signings the Phils have had in a long time. The thing that has been pissing me off with people on here, is the way that people complain here, it sounds like we are in 3rd place or something. This is what gives philly fans the bad reputation, which I always hear about. So how bout we talk about the positives more. Thanks!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I have one real negative to say…Brett Myers. Fuck that wifebeater.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
God, Utley blows.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
amen, keith. living just outside nyc, listening to ny talk radio and hearing teh mets fans talk i laugh my ass off. then i come here, and for some reason we sound just like mets fans, even though we are 6 1/2 up on them. it makes no sense to me.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
(sarcasm)…and Howard is now tied for the LEAGUE LEAD in RBIs.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
What the hell is up with Utley? he looks completely fucked up at the dish. When Howard looks better, thats pretty shitty.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
mike I am not sure what you are saying with that comment?
June 16th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
It seems like Utley and Howard just can’t be hot at the same time. It’s like they pick up eachother’s slack.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Phil, I noticed that too. Where is Myers? It’s great to see our starters teaching each other stuff (and not just Moyer mentoring Hamels and Kendrick since even Eaton was there and they all seemed to be discussing things with each other). I don’t know what to do with Myers but I think that trading him would probably be the best for both the Phillies and Myers. I think he may turn it around someday as a starter or a closer, but it will never be here, like what has happened with Gavin Floyd.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Victoryyyyy!!!! Shut up, pessimists, quite frankly, you piss me off.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Great win. Great job by Hamels. Howard and Rollins are picking it up. I’m loving this.
Screw you Boston!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
WE WIN GAME 1 AGAINST THE CHAMPIONS!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
That was a great win. THey gave hamels run support tonight and howard mashed bartolo colon pretty hard. quality. it will be harder tomorrow and wednesday with lester and masterson. im going to be there tomorrow night for moyer vs lester. looking forward to that. they need to pickup the win for moyer tomorrow night.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
im in too much of a good mood to think about brett myers
June 16th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Brett Myers leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I can’t believe noone noticed what I noticed with him not talking to the other 4 in the dugout. There were several times times they showed Eaton, Moyer, Kendrick, and Hamels talking in the dugout and Myers nowhere to be seen.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
I’m going Wednesday!!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
I wish my broke ass was going.
June 16th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Who is our set-up man? Time to rethink Flash, I don’t think we make a serious run at a championship bringing him in the 8th. Durbin? He’s throwing great. If, and I admit a big, big if, ownership is serious about our team, sign all three, Hamels, Burrell and Howard to deals. But, next up, Sox tomorrow night. School ‘em Jamie!
June 16th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Phil, I have a question for you. A little earlier you said the Phils were the best in the NL. I just want to see what makes you say that when we just got done losing a series to the Cards when they were w/o Pooh-Holes? Also, what’s your thoughts on how the Phils compare to the Cubs?
June 16th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
i cant believe that eaton isnt the weak link. thats insane when you think how bad he was last year. myers is so bad they have to address it. cole was solid as usual tonight getting his 7th win
June 16th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Our ace better beat their journeyman spot 5 starter in our house.
But I am glad to get the W tonight. I’m most impressed that Phils fans came out in full force and drowned out any Boston presence.
Let’s go, Moyer tomorrow. He’s been gutsy as hell this year.
I agree, Clare, the doom-sayers certainly aren’t enjoying our time at the top, are they? Can we rename this site MalcontentNation?
June 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Durbin should be considered for the 7th and 8th of close games. Flash needs some fucking rest.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Hahahaha thank you, Greg!!!!
June 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Pat, for starters we lose 2 to the cards without Pujols when our bats got cold after embarrassing them 20-2. We left 15 men on base on Sunday. They just weren’t getting things done. Myers actually single handedly lost us the game yesterday by pitching like shit. As for the Cubs, go look at who they’ve beat to have the best record in baseball and that’ll explain their record. Also, look how many games were at home and how many were away and what their home and away records are.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
I’m not happy unless I’m pissed
June 16th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Oh, not to mention we “swept” the cubs already this season. I know it wasn’t actually a sweep, but the ump made a horrible call. Not only that, but the Phillies are 1 of 3 teams that have a winning record on the road.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Yes, Pat, those two games against the Cards did not demonstrate our best baseball and the Cubs have been helped by their schedule.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
it seems to me utley is trying to pull everything…cant remember last time utley had an opo hit…good to see howard pick up his slack though
June 16th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
scot… just from earlier i said he had 40 bad games…thats my fualt hes only had 34 no hit games this year…my bad…hamels battle nicely through this game
June 16th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t want Utley and Howard to get hot at the same time until October.
It’s BASEBALL, UTLEY IS NOT GOING TO HIT A HOMERUN EVERY NIGHT!
God, I love Phillies fans. We’re awesome.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Come on Seattle, sweep those fish! SHOW SOME SPINE!
June 16th, 2008 at 10:27 pm
The Marlins have an easy sweep.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Initial thoughts on the game before a post:
- Great crowd tonight. Mostly Philly fans. I’d say about 71/29.
- Dustin Pedroia and Julio Lugo know how to hit Hamels. Just time the fastball.
- Utley had a bad game, but he’ll bounce back sure enough.
- Howard’s mashing righties now. He’s opening up against lefties, though.
- Jimmy looks like he’s turning a corner.
- Cole pitched fantastic and worked his curve wonderfully toward the end.
- Carlos Ruiz had the key hit in the game; Cole had a very key sac bunt to help blow the game open.
- Very big win. Lester’s the kind of guy we’ll have trouble with tomorrow.
June 16th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
So, who’s getting the Asburn award? There are a few candidates tonight. I’m thinking Howard.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
stop stop stop!!! stop with the negativity already. you people are miserable. we are the best team in the national league for god’s sake! lighten up. we could win the world series and the next day you guys would be complaining about brett myers stinking in 2009. sit back and enjoy this great exciting team we have here.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Thank you, Ryan!!! Everyone listen to him!
June 16th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Tim,
I was thinking it was more like 72%
June 16th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
You bastard.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:22 pm
Phil, Howard has to get the Ashburn award tonight. 2 HR’s – 4 RBI’s, no doubt.
June 16th, 2008 at 11:23 pm
I will enjoy this game tomorrow but im going to be edgy on saturday because BRETT MYERS will be out there. see? myers has become a joke. all im asking for is someone who is not a joke to take his place.
