Gamenight: Reds (28-31) At Phillies (35-25)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, June 04, 2008 05:37 PM

The Phils could secure an 8-2 homestand, at worst, with a win tonight against the Reds. The Phils will tote Brett Myers out there. Myers had a nice start last time out against the Rockies, going eight innings while striking out a season-high 11. He’ll need to duplicate that tonight.

Why? The Reds throw out there Edinson Volquez, who pitched well against the Phillies this season and is the National League ERA leader. He’s a hard thrower and very deceptive at that, but with patient Phillie bats, he could be beaten. Meanwhile, the bullpen has been taxed with Tom Gordon and Brad Lidge seeing the past three games each. They might not be available tonight. The plan would be to get Myers eight, then turn it over to either Romero (in a close game) or Condrey/Seanez (in a blowout).

Ken Griffey Jr.? Not in the game. At this point it’s probably to get him 600 in Cincinnati. There’s rain (and a tornado) in the forecast, as it has been all day. With a day game set for tomorrow, it’s possible this one could be called.

Phillies: Brett Myers (3-6) 5.52 ERA
Reds: Edinson Volquez (7-2) 1.46 ERA

Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 77 degrees, isolated storms
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Feliz, Coste, Myers

Your gamenight beer: We’ll need something stronger tonight, something that’ll ignite the bats over flame-throwing Volquez. I suggest Sam Adams Honey Porter, a delicious, sweet but strong beer that you can cut some wood with. As the rain pours down and you think about an eight- or nine-win homestand, take comfort in this beer and eat some buffalo wings.

Go Phillies!

utley…strike out, maybe the world is going to end soon

  2. NEPA Says:

Whew. This kid is gonna be tough tonight. Hopefully Myers can keep it close long enough for our offense to figure him out, if they ever do.

  3. Brian G. Says:

When is Ryan gonna be productive again?

  4. Phil Says:

    Hopefully right here.

  5. chris m Says:

its starting to piss me off when rollins grounds out he doesnt run…with his speed one booble could lead to him getting on…i love him but you wont see utley pulling that bull shit

  6. Brian G. Says:

    Utley’s going yard here

  7. AP Says:

    Damn…I surely thought no-hitter.

    Don’t lose this one, Fightin’s. :-(

  8. Matt Says:

Brett – next time you need to waste an 0-2 pitch, throw it a little higher. Nice piece of hitting by Votto though..

  9. Phil Says:

Matt don’t bash Myers. The dude has pitched a gem.

  10. Mike T. Says:

Let’s see if that $10 Million buys us a solo shot in the 8th to tie it at 1.

  11. Phil Says:

    He won’t he’ll K.

  12. Phil Says:

    Dunn pulled a Pat Burrell!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Brian G. Says:

    CMON Howard.. just once, please!

  14. NEPA Says:

Howard or Burrell has to make this team pay for that huge mistake.

  15. Brian G. Says:

Well worth the $10 mil. Every penny.

  16. Andrew Says:

    swung on 3 straight balls….
getting real frustrated you know whats going to happen.

  17. Brian G. Says:

I can not voice me frustration of Ryan Howard any more… He’s had EVERY chance to break this game open! He failed every time. Every damn time.

  18. Phil Says:

    TRADE THAT FAT FUCK!!!

  19. Gavin Says:

the 3-1 pitch was the one that did him in. He is clueless at the dish. That aint Randy Johnson out there for Christs sake.

  20. chris m Says:

i think i know howards problem…he cant see the ball because his nostrils block his line of sight

  21. chris m Says:

too early to pull burell and hes not even the tying run

  22. Phil Says:

Well, Howard lost the game for us…fucking asshole.

  23. Gavin Says:

Chalk this one up as an L. I guess we cant win them all. Just hate that we’ll lose on such a great pitching perfoemance by a guy who needed some serious confidence.

  24. Greg V. Says:

I’m done with Howard. He is not coming through with anything plausible. I have done my best to hang in there with him but I’ve had enough. You could trade him tomorrow and I wouldn’t care at all!

    Great job from Myers.

    Caution: Dead bats!

  25. Mike W. Says:

Manuel, pulling Burrell for a pinch runner even though there was a runner already ahead of him…let’s hope this doesn’t cost in extra innings….

  26. Phil Says:

Looks like they’re about to score some more runs. This is retarded. WAY TO GO HOWARD!!!

  27. chris m Says:

great job by the fat fuck

  28. Mike T. Says:

    Feliz, Coste and Dobbs?

  29. roman Says:

1: Who would actually give anything for Howard that makes a trade worth it?

2: How can you only blame Howard when Charlie refuses to reshuffle the order. If Burrell was 4th, would Cinci have walked Utley yesterday?

  30. Greg V. Says:

    1. I have no idea.

    2. Howard’s job is to hit. Absolutely the order should be reshuffled but that doesn’t give Howard the right to swing at the crap he swings at! The pitchers are hitting better for crying out loud! I’ve had enough!

  31. Greg V. Says:

I knew once he ended up on a video game box, it would be a jinx!

  32. Phil Says:

Burrell should be clean up. You know he’s a joke when Utley is getting walked to get to Howard.

  33. Phil Says:

p.s. Give Myers the Asburn award anyway.

  34. roman Says:

hey greg v: dont think im giving howard a pass, i know every time he steps up in a clutch sitaution he will either reach for a pitch low and outside or swing at the first pitch and pop up. i’m just saying the problem extends beyond him.

It is a shame that Myers gets an L for his hard work tonight.

  35. Phil Says:

Myers should beat Howard instead of his wife tonight.

  36. Geoff Says:

Myers really pitched well tonight, awesome in fact, and it looks like he and adam eaton have both starter to turn the corner and find a string of consistent play. dare i even say that? i hope thats the case. i want to sure up this rotation anyway and itll only get easier if these two guys pitch well every time out.

meanwhile…wonder what the yankeed would give up for ryan howard?

would the yankees give up robinson cano or melky cabrera and either phil hughes or ian kennedy for ryan howard? maybe you can figure out a way to get chien ming wang off their hands? i know they wont give up joba chamberlain. you know the yankees will start to get desperate and go after ryan howard. maybe thats selling low, but im really disgusted right now with howard. its june, hes still not mashing, hes definitely busted. im ready to move him for some pitching and overall team depth. chase utley can probably play any position on the field. if he keeps struggling they very well might consider an offer for howard.

im just really frustrated with him already, im sick of this guy.

  37. Phil Says:

Dude, Joba is overrated and so is Cano. I’d go after a nice young starter like Lincecum or Volquez(not that the Reds need another Dunn.) A young stud righty to 1-2 punch with Hamels would be really nice. You can send Kendrick down to the minors and let him get better. If Eaton starts pitching poorly again or Moyer dies of old age you can bring Kendrick back up.

  38. Geoff Says:

Yes it would be. if the giants would give up lincecum id do it, but they would be absolutely insane to do that. really. other teams will offer for howard for sure. well see what happens. i would trade howard for lincecum straight up if theyd go for it. seriously.

  39. Geoff Says:

i still predict that ryan howard will be a yankee next season. they are desperate enough to give up a lot for him especially if they fall off the wagon this season. i would prefer he goes to the angels though because they have more to offer us (jered weaver, ervin santana, jon garland, casey kotchman, chone figgins, matthews jr, etc.) some other guys i know have no chance of moving so i wont bother.

  40. Phil Says:

We could probably get Howard and a 3rd base prospect. The Giants want a new Bonds in SF.

  41. Phil Says:

I mean lincecum and a 3rd base prospect for Howard.

  42. Bill Says:

I can’t imagine them trading Howard next season. More like 2010 if they do not sign him before.

  43. Phanatic74 Says:

Howard and Rollins needs to step it up . . . . . For once Myers comes thru for us and they strand 5 guys on base in scoring position !!

  45. Mark Says:

The Phils need today’s game bad. It makes the difference between a fine homestand and a mediorcre one. And going into series against Atlanta and Florida, with a good Cardinals team in waiting, the Phils need this one for momentum.

  46. Phil Says:

    7-3 isn’t mediocre.

  47. Rick Says:

I don’t know that I would want Lincecum. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great pitcher! But how long can that last with his size? He’s a pretty small guy with a rocket arm. His durability worries me…. I see him eventually in a closer role like Billy Wagner where he doesn’t have to throw 100 pitches per game.

    What do you guys think???

  48. Geoff Says:

Im just saying that they really need to start thinking about moving howard for a pitcher to help us now and position players to now. if the move is made in the offseason, then you can make it for mlb-ready prospects. if its done in season, i want people that can contribute now. you can move him and solve many of the teams problems. anybody can play first base so thats not a problem. sure, this lineup is great when theyre all hitting, but people shouldve taken away from yesterday that it is all about pitching. a good pitcher completely shut down this lineup, and hes not even the best pitcher in the national league. thats what happens in the playoffs! your offense gets shut down by the best pitching, it almost always happens that way. they need another guy to go third or second in the rotation and shut down teams completely. no, its not adam eaton. if adam eatons pitching well then he can be the 4th or 5th guy, but we still need another guy. we have all seen how this rotation can implode for two weeks and lose games for us just as easily as they can win games for us. we need more stability.

  49. Rick Says:

I agree with you Geoff whole-heartedly about them being shutdown by good pitching! They need to hit better for contact. Especially in a game where the opponent fielding is as suspect as the Reds looked last night.

That was one thing I really liked about Polanco in their line-up. He could still be their third baseman right now? Who did we even get for him? I can’t remember.

Anyway, they can move Ryan, bring up Cardenas, and move chase to 1st. But, I don’t think this should happen for at least another year or so. I think the Phils will wait until 2010-11 to move him unless something drastic happens between now and then. I just have to believe Ryan will have a monster season after the AS break. Until then, hopefully Chase can keep carrying the ‘O’.

It seems like Cardenas is going to be a solid contact hitter as long as he continues what he’s doing now. How many years off is he from coming up?
