Gordon Feels ‘Balky,’ Reliever Still Wanted
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, June 25, 2008 11:21 AM
Todd Zolecki reports the Phils may still be seeking bullpen help, especially with Tom Gordon’s shoulder “situation.”
Asst. GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said Gordon has a “balky” shoulder, but was available for Tuesday night’s game against Oakland.
References to outlandish 1980s sitcom characters aside, this whole covering up by the Phils’ front office illustrates a definite need for bullpen reinforcements. Chad Durbin was warming up for the Phils last night before Emil Brown socked the three-run home run. He — not Gordon — was in line to bridge Jamie Moyer to Brad Lidge. Gordon is not an option right now.
It would make sense for the Phils to shuttle Clay Condrey to waivers and bring up an arm more suited to throwing the later innings. Maybe RJ Swindle (21.2 IP, 2.08 ERA, 27/5 K/BB) should get a shot? Or Josh Outman (56 IP, 3.70 ERA)?
Before hitting the panic button and trading a prospect or two for Brian Fuentes or whomever, why not try out the young guns?

hold on, I’ve got Ugueth Urbina on the line.
June 25th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
I think they should bring Jose Mesa back. Or maybe Rheal Cormier. I bet both are still looking for a job right now.
June 25th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Screw Fuentes he will not get this team any closer to a World Series.
June 25th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
They have phone lines in the prison Urbina is in right now?
June 25th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
if anyone can get through to a south american prison, it’s brad.

Back now…why dpo they always do this? if hes hurt put him on the DL. give him two weeks off and try out josh outman to find out if he is any good.
also, GREAT suggestion about carrasco. its the time to do that now. myers to the pen, carrasco gets a try out for a few starts or six-man it till the all star break.
i noticed they lost again last night..against the 3, now 4-10 joe blanton. nice one guys.
in DC the angels were in town playing the nationals…too painful to watch on tv so i went to espn to watch the college world series. good to be back. i also love late games.
i think they need to tell gillick to NOT stand pat and make some moves right now. bring some young guns up. see what theyve got.
also. can we please cut so taguchi and trade geoff jenkins for a shitty prospect already?
is he not a terrible signing who contributes next to nothing?
just get him out of here. bering up a couple kids to replace the 4th and 5th outfield spots. seroiusly, theyd be cheaper and better than that BUM.
June 25th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
your designated hitter should at least be able to make CONTACT
June 25th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
oh yeah i almost forgot…after yesterday, does anyone ACTUALLY still want them to get bronson arroyo?
June 25th, 2008 at 6:31 pm
I checked on Urbina’s availability and apparently he has an appointment with a firing squad in rural Venezuala real soon. Apparently he massacred a whole village with a machete. I told the government down there that I would trade Geoffy Jenkins, Adam Eaton and 11/12ths of his salary, and the negotiating rights to Chad Ogea for a stay of execution on Urbina. We had a deal and then I tried to substitute Brett Myers for Eaton and they said “Fuck it”. They said they were looking for used goods not trash. Oh well, I guess I’ll go back to spelunking in Dave Montgomery’s ass for colon polyps.

Anyone know the status of Kris Benson? Can he help us this year?
June 25th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
What do you think?
June 25th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Hell no. wed be lucky if he could even be a reliever this year for the phils.
also. i have to go out of my way to commend the phillies for something, believe it or not.
was watching the CWS tonight and when i was in DC…the WAC player of the year and the fresno state MVP is steve susdorf. whom the phillies selected in the 19th round this year. that might turn out to be a god selection. he has a nice swing. hes patient too!
June 25th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
he is also a left fielder…
