Homers Plague Myers, Phils In 5-4 Loss

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, June 11, 2008 10:08 AM

When the first inning dust settled Brett Myers had given up three runs from two home runs and the Marlins were up 3-0. That wasn’t enough. The Marlins would score five in total, and the Phillies would only garner four, leading to a 5-4 loss in Miami Tuesday.

The Phils are now three games ahead of the Marlins in first place. Myers now stands at 3-8 with a 5.34 ERA. He walked four and struck out five, but the homers killed him. Mike Jacobs, Hanley Ramirez and Jorge Cantu all went yard off the faltering righty, who was leaving fastballs and hanging curveballs in the zone yet again. Two steps forward. Two steps back.

Jimmy Rollins and Pat Burrell hit homers to cut into the Florida advantage, but the Phils couldn’t accumulate enough with runners on to seize a tie or the lead. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard combined for an 0-for-8 night; maybe more important, Shane Victorino went just 0-for-5. When he doesn’t get on base it spells trouble.

The bullpen did a nicejob cleaning Myers’ mess, with Clay Condrey lowering his ERA to 4.26 and JC Romero pitching another full-tilt inning.

Blame this one on Myers. The offense wasn’t completely on point against Ricky Nolasco, but Myers was just missing. Now we just don’t know what to expect from him — five runs in five innings or a no-hitter through seven.

Moreover, the whole game just felt lost. Maybe it was my vantage point — the sound was low most of the time because of the grating Marlins broadcasters; the broadcast itself reeked of a stadium auction; the Marlins quickly took the wind out of the Phils’ sails. This one was a first — a game that just seemed lost from the top. The Phils were due for one of those.

Im really liking going after ben sheets as an option too. i wonder what the brewers would ask for. id have to resign him though. you cant rent players in MLB because you cant afford to urinate away prospects.

I agree. This game just felt lost after the first inning. Cantu’s home run signaled that Myers wasn’t the same guy we saw againt Cincy. The most disappointing thing about last night wasn’t the loss, it was that Myers last performance may have been a mirage.
Also, did anyone bid to play catch with Mike Jacobs?!?!

  3. Don M Says:

They battled back… it just sucks when we make it 3-2…Myers gives up another jack..

Hamels needs to be solid again tonight.. Marlins aren’t that good of a team, and we shouldn’t struggle in Miami as much as we do.

How about that righty coming in and getting Utley and Howard to strikeout… that sucked..

  4. Phil Says:

Marlins are a good team. Their offense is really good. They’re like the Phillies last year. Crappy starters(they don’t have Hamels or a Kendrick miracle like we did) and their bullpen is better than ours was last year. Their defense is ridiculously bad unlike ours last year. Our defense is superior this year. I love it. We have 3 gold glovers in the infield, Howard is playing better D this year, and Victorino is ridiculous. Jenkins has been really stellar too.

  5. Sam Says:

I completely agree about the game feeling lost…very intresting, because the phillies are always down 3-0 in the first inning, but definitely a bad feeling about that game.

It sealed the deal for me when meyers popped out trying to bunt Coste over to 3rd with no outs. He got left on base, and I just knew we were going to need that run.

    Brett Myers’ fastball sucks

  7. Brett Myers Says:

…even my wife hit me last night… I was not on top of my game.

just when everyone thinks howard is out of his ways he starts a new slump. we cant count on him to help this team right now. we gotta figure the rest of the team is going to continue to pick him up and just hope he comes around like weve thought for a while but his BA is in the same place. The reason i give him so much blame and a lot of people disagree is bc hes a MVP. MVP’s need to carry there team in strecthes but i dont remember when hes done that this year. maybe a little in houston.

  10. Geoff Says:

Yeah hes gotta be better than this. if he doesnt pick it up by the end of this month you have to really worry, even though you should all be concerned now about him. youre going to need that run production EVEN IF you get another SP. do you go get another hitter? can they afford that AND a SP? not without giving up people from your roster now.

if he fails this year they really are in deep trouble

pat burell got tortured for hitting .240. he wasn’t even an mvp. seems like the same people that did that to burell are now suporting howard when I put blame on him?
