Lohse Confirms Phils’ $21MM Offer

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, June 14, 2008 01:13 PM

Kyle Lohse was an integral part of the Phillies playoff run last season, and his free agent status made him a commodity for many teams in the offseason. The Phils, according to Jim Salisbury, bit early.

Lohse, who will pitch against his former teammates for the St. Louis Cardinals today, confirmed yesterday that he received a three-year offer in the neighborhood of $21 million shortly after last season ended.

“It went away early,” Lohse said. “It was gone less than a month into the off-season. It’s not like we had extended talks — one time, that was it.”

Phils Asst. GM Ruben Amaro said the talks extended throughout the offseason, but the Geoff Jenkins and Pedro Feliz signings changed the Phils mentality and took the deals away. I’ll believe a little of both here.

Lohse is 7-2 with a 3.92 ERA for the Cardinals. He’s probably not worth $21M for three years, and he was dumb for not taking the deal (it was the most he’d be offered all offseason), but it would’ve been nice to have him in the rotation this season (to help, you know, if a certain starter-turned-reliever-turned-starter had problems).

God dammit Loshe!!! You know you’d rather be pitching in Philly.

they pulled it after a month…haha thats so their MO. he should have fired his agent for that. although if he is consistent this year hell get more than that in free agency. thats the one thing this offseason the phillies did that REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. that was not a good idea. not we have to go make another trade to get a guy that we might be renting again.

The Phils offered the money and he turned it down. That was Lohse’s mistake or maybe his agent’s for missreading his market value. He would take that deal ina heartbeat now.
I think the Phils offense should punish him today. Show him what a contender looks like.

    GO PHILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On his contract, Lohse said after a masterful performance against his former team mates….”Obviously, they felt they didn’t need me bad enough,” Lohse said. “I didn’t mind going out there and beating them today, I’ll tell you that.”

Lohse’s agent is or was none other than Scott Boras. I don’t think I have to describe his reputation for salary demands. It was not till March of this year that Lohse and/or Boras realized time is running out (spring training) and have to accept much lower offers. My question is when news circulated in March that Lohse/Boras were viewing offers of $4-5 million, why Gillick didn’t come back with another offer of that range?
