Montgomery Taking Bull By Horns

Rich Hoffman talked with Phillies President Dave Montgomery, who wasn’t shy when speaking about the Phils prospects for 2008 and the possibility to strengthen the corps for a playoff run:

“The goal is always to improve the club. But I will say this: Shame on us if we sit back and say, ‘Everything is going fine. There’s no area where we can improve.’ That isn’t the nature of this business. That isn’t the nature of the general manager we have. He’s always looking, always challenging everyone in the organization, scouts, everyone. … You can’t stand still.”

“It’s a situational analysis. We might be in a place where we’re trying to improve a position instead of filling a need.”

The key point is “improve a position.” It seems as if the Phils think the 25-man roster assembled today is a good one, but might need some tweaking to get past the rest of the National League. What needs tweaking to me? They need a starter to slide toward the top of the rotation, and they need a bonafide LOOGY to allow JC Romero more of a setup role.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports writes the Phillies don’t have enough of a prospect package to grab a top-flight starter, such as CC Sabathia, but are looking hard for that LOOGY. MLB Trade Rumors doesn’t agree with Rosenthal’s assessment of the farm system, and neither do I. The Phils could package a few of their top guys, such as Carlos Carrasco and Adrian Cardenas, and get Sabathia for a few months. The Indians would be idiots not to give up a half year of CC for years of young prospects.

The other thing that strikes me when Montgomery says “improve a position” is it points to an external move, not anything from the farm system. I’d bet Montgomery thinks an RJ Swindle or a James Happ represents a direction change, not tweaking. That means this team is going for the strap now — World Series or death.

Frankly, I like it. This franchise only has so long before the foundation of Utley/Howard/Rollins/Hamels/Burrell is broken up (maybe after this season). You have to go for the ring now, even if it costs a couple pieces of the future. (Oh, and who would I look at? Besides Sabathia — Rich Harden, AJ Burnett, Gil Meche, Ben Sheets and maybe Paul Byrd.)

In fact, there could be a good reason the Phils picked Anthony Hewitt and Zach Collier to start this year’s draft. Maybe Cardenas, Greg Golson and Dominic Brown are more expendable than we think.

It does tell me what they are putting cardenas in a package. id tend to hold onto carrasco because i think he can be a solid starter for them next year. ill bet they put golson in there too, but i wouldnt, because they think they can have collier ready before golson. they also must think hewitt at third base will be ready sooner than the media projects.

i hope they do go for it. thats encouraging news from montgomery.

  2. Bruce Says:

Regardless of what top quality pitcher that may (or may not) be available out there, my question is are the Phillies willing to give up some of their best prospects for a THREE month rental service of a desirable starter? It is a gamble when unforseen circumstances (injuries, slumps, etc.) can roadblock the team’s path to the playoffs. Not to mention about the success of wild card teams (last six world series with three championships)… see my post on that subject in “on Gamenight: Phillies (39-26) At Marlins (34-29)”.

  3. Geoff Says:

i agree on taht one bruce…if you make a move like that you need to resign a guy. i ahte renting. i want that starter, and then i want him resigned. maybe some of the other player son this team will move on after the season, but to have a top line starter to add to hamels once you lock him up is key for the future. i HATE renting players. if you rent a guy, you rent kyle lohse like you said.

but i dont want a rental, i want a guy you can control for a year or two into the future and have a chance to lock him up

  4. Geoff Says:

it makes guys taht are under team control until 2010 much more valuable to me

  5. Phil Says:

If the Phillies win the World Series this year they can raise ticket prices by a few dollars. Now, I as a Phillies fan who try to make at least 3 games a month would have no problem paying extra money to go see a World Series team. Shit, I’d pay $3 more right now to go see the Phillies with the way they’re playing. I’m pretty sure most fans would agree, right? If you bump up ticket prices you can bump up your stingy pay roll. With that money you re-sign the rent-a-pitcher you’re hypothetically going to trade for. You lock up Hamels, Victorino, and Burrell. If Howard comes through 2nd half then you pay that primadona whatever he wants too. It makes me so mad that we have big market fans but not a big market pay roll. I’d say we’re selling out games at a similar rate than the Mets and Dodgers are. It’s ridiculous how these owners act. I for one have no problem seeing Cardeans, along with a few other prospects going bye bye if it means we’re going to win a world series this year. I just want to see this team win a world series already. We need a guy almost as good as Hamels.

  6. Tim Malcolm Says:

The flip is you don’t know what Carrasco, Golson, etc., will give you in the Majors. Either way you’re taking a gamble. What the gamble is about this year is worth much more than in years past.

  7. OZ Says:

Montgomery is a fraud, forever dangling a carrot….do u really think this ownership will grab CC AND sign him for a couple years?!

F*** our prospects. I’ve said it before, only the Phils think they are big-time. Carrasco is the only one you see in Baseball America or the like, and it ain’t like he was top 10….

i would trade our propsects in a heartbeat. this team is close, despite those millionarie, inept, cheap, chimpanzee owners….

  8. Geoff Says:

i think at least one of the owners, probably montgomery and not the others, understands that they can rake in more money if they win a championship than the way theyre doing it now. tahts taking into account the boost in payroll and ticket prices as mentioned earlier. thats so obvious that it doesnt even need to be stated. some of those shadow owners must really be terrible human beings if all they want to do is suck money off their fans and not deliver them a championship in the process. most money grubbing owners want to win so bad that they throw all kinds of money around and win a championship. these guys need to have it spelled out for them that yes you can spend extra money, win, AND still make more money off of a championship season

  9. PhillyFriar Says:

Tim, I like your list but would certainly include Bedard. Unlike the others (with the exception of Harden), Bedard is team controlled next year as well, which means you’re giving yourself a chance both this year and next to really go for it with this core.

Oh, and Harden is the ultimate tantalizer. I don’t think our prospects would really interest Billy Beane, but even if they did, we’d have to give up all of them for a pitcher who can’t seem to stay healthy for more than a month at a time.

  10. Geoff Says:

harden would be a terrible gamble. i agree with that. thats why beane is marketing blanton as a lot more than he really is. would love to have a guy under team control until the 2010 season like bedard.

  11. Phil Says:

I’m pretty certain that the Phillies could sell out 75% of their games this season. They’re over 50% right now and it’s June. They’ve sold out more games this year than they did combined last year. If you get a pitcher that you know is taking you to the world series most games will sell out the rest of the year. If they get to the world series and win, then you’ll see 90% of the games get sold out next year because you know next year with the core plus this pitcher(assuming you sign him) you’re going to continue to contend, and everyone will want to go see their world series champs the Phillies try and get a repeat. You can boost up the cost of tickets and make more money because tickets cost more and you’re selling out all of your games. These owners have to be the dumbest people ever.

  12. Greg Says:

get a starter and ship Myers to the ‘pen. He’s the only guy not picking up the slack. He’ll ease some of the pressure on Romero and he can be LOOGY

  13. Tim Malcolm Says:

The more I think about it, the more Harden is a scary move. Normally Beane knows what he’s doing with his young arms. Bedard should be in there.

  14. Phil Says:

What is Myers going to do in the pen? He’d be a spot starter/mop up man at best. What is he going to do, replace Condrey? Condrey pitched better than him last night. Keep Myers in the rotation. He’ll eventually come around at our cost unfourtantly. He has incredible stuff, but I still think he wants to be the closer. He’s such a baby. Maybe we can trade him off for someone needing a closer? He’s a good closer.

  15. Geoff Says:

Hardens very scary. you could give up a haul to billy beane and then harden goes down and your franchise is F’D hardcore.

I think were stuck with myers for now unless hes included in the deal for the top elvel starter but 90 percent of the time those types of deals are prospects only coming back in return for the star going out

  16. ryan Says:

good to hear dave montgomery say something like that. however i’ll believe it when i see it. he’s been the face of the of the most pathetic ownership groups in all of sports for the past 20+ years. His actions have spoken louder than his words. It’ll be a dramatic turnaround in ownership philosophy if he actually means what he said there.

  17. Geoff Says:

i think its time. theres no better time for the phillies to win it than this year

  18. Geoff Says:

BUT they have to go out and do what it takes

  19. Steve Says:

    Is Gavin Floyd available? :-)

  20. chris m Says:

do not rent a player… the new babseball is to win with young talent…id rather keep them for 5 years from now then make a push into the playoffs with a rental piece that makes our team a little stronger but if we get hot at the right time this team is already championship quality with or without that player. i want the player but dont overpay like we did for garcia bc gillicks an idiot. our farm is pretty depleted. dont take what little we have to make it depleted for the next four years.. i dont mind trading for a player but make sure we lock him up for what were giving away

  21. scot Says:

The Phils Ownership group is as ususal gettin a bum rap here. We are 8th in the MLB in payroll. 8th!!! Not nearly as cheap as we’re being made out to be here. And payroll isn’t everything. Seattle is ahead of us by several million, as are the Mets. Who would you rather be right now? The Dodgers are 24 million ahead of us. The Yanks, well you know how that goes. So for the record, the only one’s ahead of us in payroll and in the standings are the RedSox, Angels, and Cubs. And we are at the least competitive if not better than those teams. The payroll we have now allows us to have the flexibility to make a move, IF it makes the team better. We’re in a damn good position.

At the end of the day, baseball is a business, and the Phils, contrary to belief have been really damn smart about how they’ve run theirs.

  22. Phil Says:

We’re 14th in payroll, we’re able to be 10th though, we’ve just got a lot.

  23. scot Says:

Phil, where are you getting 14th?
