My National League All-Star Team

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, June 30, 2008 11:03 PM

I’d like to know what you all think about a potential National League All-Star team. I’ll provide mine, taking at least one player on each team and counting on the current fan voting leaders to take the starting spots:

Starters

  • C - Geovany Soto, CHC
  • 1B - Lance Berkman, HOU
  • 2B - Chase Utley, PHI
  • 3B - Chipper Jones, ATL
  • SS - Hanley Ramirez, FLA
  • OF - Alfonso Soriano, CHC
  • OF - Ken Griffey Jr, CIN
  • OF - Kosuke Fukudome, CHC

The only arguments, really, are in the outfield, where all three shouldn’t be starting.

Reserves

  • C - Brian McCann, ATL
  • C - Russell Martin, LAD

Really hard to go against having three catchers; they’re all having great years. Apologies to Bengie Molina, but San Francisco is only getting one all-star.

  • 1B - Albert Pujols, STL
  • 1B - Adrian Gonzalez, SD

Despite an injury, Pujols is having another standout year. Gonzalez has been the guy for San Diego — its only rep.

  • 2B - Dan Uggla, FLA

Uggla is having a huge year for Florida and is the only other second sacker worthy of the game.

  • 3B - David Wright, NYM

It’s hard not to take Wright, who is having another good year statistically. Apologies to Aramis Ramirez, Garrett Atkins and Jorge Cantu.

  • SS - Jose Reyes, NYM

Reyes is playing well yet again for the Mets. And though Miguel Tejada is neck-and-neck with Ramirez, he shouldn’t get in the game with his numbers (10 HR, 43 RBI, .772 OPS).

  • OF - Xavier Nady, PIT
  • OF - Ryan Ludwick, STL
  • OF - Ryan Braun, MIL
  • OF - Carlos Lee, HOU
  • OF - Matt Holliday, COL

Nady, Braun and Holliday are your real starters to this point. Ludwick has cooled lately but has earned his spot. Lee was the last guy on the team for me (sorry Pat Burrell, Aaron Rowand, Nate McLouth, a few others).

Pitchers

  • SP - Edinson Volquez, CIN
  • SP - Brandon Webb, ARI
  • SP - Ben Sheets, MIL
  • SP - Jair Jurrjens, ATL
  • SP - Tim Lincecum, SF
  • SP - Dan Haren, ARI
  • SP - Ryan Dempster, CHC
  • SP - Cole Hamels, PHI
  • SP - Johan Santana, NYM

Most of these are no-brainers, but the final three were the tough ones. I skipped Adam Wainwright and Tim Hudson for Hamels and Santana, just flat better pitchers (duh). Dempster gets in because teammate Carlos Zambrano is hurt (and really, Dempster has pitched a little better). Lincecum or Volquez starts the game; either way it’s awesome.

  • RP - Brad Lidge, PHI
  • RP - Jon Rauch, WAS
  • RP - Kerry Wood, CHC

Lidge is the best closer in the National League so far. Rauch is your lone National. Wood has been sparkling in his new role and deserves the accolades. Sorry Matt Capps and Brandon Lyon.

By team, the Cubs have the most (deservedly) with five. The Phils, Mets and Braves have three each (East Coast bias?). One-man teams are the Nationals, Pirates, Rockies, Giants, Padres and Dodgers. For shoots and giggles, I’ll say Lee won the final-man fan vote, with runners-up being Burrell, McLouth, Tejada and Hudson. My designated hitter to start the game is Braun, though I can see Gonzalez taking that spot.

As for Phillies — Burrell was among my last cuts and Hamels was among my last in. I didn’t consider Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino or anyone from the bullpen. Or Carlos Ruiz. Ha.

Who do you got?

is it possible to have zero mets in the all star game??

    talk about christmas in July

  2. Clint Hurdle Says:

I will not be including Jose Reyes over Tejada for this team as that would be an atrocity. I will also do whatever I can to keep Ken Griffey Jr off the team. Volquez will be the only Redleg rep and he will start. He has been untouchable.

  3. Steve Says:

That list is pretty hard to criticize, it seems pretty solid. I’d consider Brandon Webb over Haren though it’s close, and it’s a disgrace that the starting outfielders will likely be Griffey, Fukudome, and Soriano, I’m not sure that any of the three should even be on the team let alone start. Griffey is getting in on name alone (it’s certainly not by virtue of his .236 average) and Fukudome has only been above average, Soriano is probably the only one of the three who should even be on the team.

  4. Julie Says:

Nice list, Tim. I’d still take Tejada over Reyes though. Reyes is OVERRATED.
He is quick, but he’s not a smart baserunner. Plus, his errors this year are almost the same as all of last year combined. Maybe I’m biased because he’s on the Mets, but he’s just not an all-star to me.

  5. Bill Giles Says:

I’d have to put Rowand up there. Everyone in Philly thought he had a career year last year, and that he wouldn’t be able to duplicate his numbers (especially BA) this year. But he is duplicating; he’s putting up huge numbers (well, at least huge BA) on an absolutely crappy Giants team.

  6. Lewisauce Says:

Oops. That last one was me. I’d apologize to Mr. Giles, but I don’t really give a shit if I insulted him.

  7. Tim Malcolm Says:

You could go either way on Reyes. I also think he’s overrated, but the shortstop pool is small (surprisingly) and Reyes has the name recognition; plus, Tejada just doesn’t jump out at me this year. I thought he had much better numbers.

Rowand is another toss-up, but it came down to how many Giants make the team. Lineceum obviously gets in.

  8. Brook Says:

This year is the reason why they need to do something about taking the vote out of the hands of the fans. Its a popularity contest. They should make the fans vote count as 1/2, the players vote count as 1/4, and the managers vote count as 1/4. That outfield is horrible, there are moer deserving players.

Some players that are making league minimum can recieve a very nice bonus for making the all star team. Why should the fans vote for basically who gets paid? Some teams out there are running promotions for voting 25 times or more. I believe the Rangers have a promotion where they will give fans a free ticket to a future game if they vote 25 times or more. Something needs to be changed. You suck, you dont play.

  9. Troy Says:

Xavier Nady???? Yeah, he’s missed some games in June but he’s been the 3rd best OF on the Pirates so far this year!

Bay and McLouth are both having better seasons so far. Yes, McLouth has been slumping lately but even still….look at the numbers:

    Nady .315 | 37 R | 10 HR | 49 RBI | 1 SB (257 ABs)
    Bay .284 | 56 R | 16 HR | 43 RBI | 6 SB (292 ABs)
    McLouth .280 | 59 R | 15 HR | 52 RBI | 9 SB (318 ABs)

If I were picking anyone to represent the ‘burg at the All-Star game it’d be McLouth.

  10. Phil Says:

I’d say Tim Hudson over Jair Jurrjens.

  11. Tim Malcolm Says:

You’re right that the Pirates can go any way, Troy. But Nady does have 61 fewer at bats than McLouth and only three fewer RBI. Pretty good. Still, I’d be satisfied with any of the three making the team, so long as it’s probably one of them.

  12. Phil Says:

They have the best outfield in baseball and that whole outfield should start the NL all-star game.

  13. chris m Says:

i dont see reyes making the team. hurdle picks the reserves right? if so hurdles man was willie randolf and he got canned. eillie supposedly didnt like reyes immature crap and how he doesnt always play with the same intensity. so to stand up for his man randolph, hopefully he leaves reyes hanging. that would make me feel good!

  14. chris m Says:

anyways i hate this popularity contest for starts. This games is supposed to “mean” something. still think the homefield advantage is stupid but it is what it is so why don’t we field the best team with the players having the best years that we can. i thin k the whole voting process is stupid. common, ken griffey? i wouldnt mind if he was retiring at the end of the year if he got the start sort of like ripken but this guy doesnt play everyday and hes not the same player he has been. i wish set up men had a couple spots on the roster but obvisiously not enough room. durbin would definatly have a spot

  15. rob Says:

    Kerry Wood 40 inn 26 h 9 bb 2.43 era 20 out of 24 saves

    Billy Wagner 33 inn 23 h 8 bb 1.91 era 18 out of 23 saves

Can’t argue with your selection of Wood, but that’s close.

  16. rob Says:

    Chris M…

It would make you feel good if a shortstop that goes .292 / .354 / .478 while stealing 28 bases was snubbed for the all-star team because of politics?

You must be a hit at parties!

  17. OZ Says:

Here comes the great second half ladies and gentlemen!!!

for those who follow local news, i feel the need to distance myself from this fool…

  18. Angelina Jolie Says:

    OZ,

you silly, dreamy hottie. no one could mistake a dashing knight like u for that simpleton. Brad’s away this week. Get over here now!

  19. Matt Kwasiborski Says:

I think the All-Star voting should be left alone. It is the one completely free time we get our vote counted 100%. It is ours and ours alone. And yes, I think the electoral college is antiquated and the\at vote should be based upon popular vote.

And here is my thing about Griffey: I think the fans are rewarded a first ballot HOFer who most likely never shot up and all of his homers are 100% natural. Plus, he just hit his 600 and it is unlikely he will hit 700. I think it is the right thing to let him represent the NL, Cincy and all young players on how to play the game correctly and that staying off the juice showed just how much integrity he has. I am sure it crossed his mind and he knows he probably would be the HR king if he went the Bonds/McGwire/Sosa route.

And I also support the home field advantage the leagues play for. Growing up Puckett and the Twins were my favorite AL team. The only reason they won 2 WS was because they had home field advantage. They never won a WS road game.

Reyes is not an All-Star and Tejada is not a good example either. My choice would be Eric Bruntlett. (The rest of the post is serious though).

I’d have to put Rowand up there. Everyone in Philly thought he had a career year last year, and that he wouldn’t be able to duplicate his numbers (especially BA) this year.

EVERYONE IN PHILLY? Who the hell said that?

  21. danny Says:

By the way, enough about Griffey already. Anyone else tired of hearing about him? Please, espn, can we bring back some Roger Clemens stories?

What do you mean most likely never shot up? How do you know? Also, what does it mean to play the game correctly? And you’re sure it crossed his mind?

Tim Kurkjian, is Matt Kwasiborski just your blogging pseudonym?

  22. danny Says:

While I’m being mean, can anyone else here just not watch baseball tonight anymore? Seriously, I cannot stand that show anymore. Maybe I’m just getting too old for it (25), but I think I’d rather watch america’s best dance crew.

    John Kruk

    Chris Singleton

    Orestes Destrade!

  23. chris m Says:

where do they find these people for the show i wonder…bring back harold reynolds!

  24. chris m Says:

    rob,
are you a phillies fan. you want mets in the game? weird but anywyas if your a baseball fan you want reyes? do you watch the guy play. he doesnt play the game the right way. he mopes around the field, throws his glove when he makes errors and cant run the bases (other then steal).
sounds like you arnt the hit at parties

  25. jay Says:

I would have to agree that Griffey didn’t shoot up. Especially if the other guys say that they did because they needed help recovering. Griffey spent the last few years hurt. If he shot up he would have been able to “play through the pain”. Just my view tho. He could have shot up like everyone else in the game at the time.

  26. The Man Says:

Reyes overrated? The guy’s on pace to hit rougly .300 with 76 XBH while stealing 50-60 SB

    It’s something like .300 20 HR 40 2B 16 3B 60 SB

  27. Brook Says:

What does shooting steroids have to do with the All Star Game??? If Griffey wants a reward for not shooting up during his career its called the Hall Of Fame. He did his job. That spot on the All Star Team should go to a player that proved himself during the first half of the year. Stats are the basis for becoming an All Start, you dont get voted in for having a great ass.

  28. Griffin Says:

I was wondering who the Natinals representative would be and you’re right, it would have to be Rauch. Lidge and Wood are definites and if they want a 4th closer, it’d have to be Lyon, right?

  29. marissa Says:

agree with no ruiz but coste is one of my favorites and could atleast be a reserve, I would think

  30. jay Says:

Hard to not consider Wagner. Reyes is on pace to have an incredible year. I hate the fan vote because griffey jr. starts. It’s not fair.

  31. A-Rod Says:

I’m not participating in the HOME RUN DERBY only because Brett Myers won’t be pitching to me. I would hit at least 64 long balls off of that fat clown. And my performance would make Bobby Abreu look like Booby AbreWHO?
