Prospect Report: Tyson Brummett

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, June 20, 2008 12:46 PM

Prospect: Tyson Brummett
Position: Right-handed pitcher
Birthday: Aug. 15, 1984
Dimensions: 6-foot-2, 180 pounds
Level: AA Reading

Brummett was the Phillies’ seventh-round draft choice last season, and is already in AA Reading. He had his first start with the R-Phils last night and was brilliant:

8.2 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 2 BB

By the way, the three runs all came after Brummett was lifted with two outs in the eighth inning. He almost — almost — had a complete-game shutout.

With Clearwater he posted a 3.59 ERA in eight starts, striking out 39 while walking 13. He gave up a hit per inning. Not too shabby at all. This after a pretty dominant performance in Lakewood for a couple starts.

At age 23, he’s finally near where he should be in Reading, and it’s possible he’s on the fast track to Philadelphia. He was ranked 27th on the Phuture Phillies top-30 , tabbed as a likely back-end rotation guy. He has four pitches, nothing that great, but all workable.

Estimation: Add Brummett to the list of guys who could replace a starter in Philadelphia this season. In fact, I’d rate him above Antonio Bastardo as your next Kyle Kendrick. Does he have the chops to last in the Majors? Possibly, but he’d need to develop a dominant pitch.

this guy is serious about winning and being successful. my buddy is dating his sister and she talks about how focused he is to make the club ASAP. he would be a great addition to the rotation.
