   Cabrera is a nice piece… IF… they do something else too.. If Cabrera is your #4 or #5.. that improves your rotation a lot.

   Its becomming more and more clear that the Phillies offense is going to be inconsistent the entire year. Its built too much like an AL team, relying on the HR all the time.. and when they don’t get that, they don’t win.

   I think Victorino is a very explosive player, but Werth can play everyday, and do a very good job. If we get the Bedard that pitched for Baltimore, instead of the Seattle-type then this trade is a steal

   were you able to find that link I sent you… Thats the thing with trade RUMOR websites though… they can just run with a story, and nobody has a name attached to anything.. its just all through “a source” …which is why I tend to believe the Starks, and Tim Kurkjans (however you spell that).. guys that are on TV and have to maintain a certain level of professionalism, and they can’t just steadily throw out random rumors.

   I would love to hear from one of those guys A) what the Phils plan to do with Myers and B) What the plan for Burrell and Lidge are …

   I overreacted about rollins. i just think he needs a good chewing out about his hitting. trading him would be to much when hes signed to a long term contract. im really pissed at him right now though.

   donald for cabrera straight up? they must have overpaid him. id prob do it.

    yes bruce, for once id agree that bedard is not our guy, nor is burnett.

    i do NOT trust the phillies trainers at all. what would happen if the ytraded for an injured guy that tanked out or got hurt again? that would be insane.

    if that injured guy is harden then i can make an exception, otherwise forget it.

    bedard cant throw compelte games even when healthy.

    if you think about it theres no a lot out there. thats why dan cabrera is enticing and thats why the idea of harang is both creative and the best option.

    if they had a good medical staff id consider it if he came cheap. but he wont even come cheap.

    i said happ and vic for bedard is ok. for a HEALTHY bedard, sure its a great deal. but when you cant go over 100 pitches because you dont want to get hurt again?

    honestly, jenkins is the worst move of the gillick era.

    worse than barajas, helms, freddy garcia, worse than all them combined. that fact that this guy gets 7 million to be an awful part time player boggles my mind. he’s the worst.

    I would trade Vic but no way am I trading Carrasco. Happ and Vic for Bedard would probably not be enough for the Mariners. Maybe toss Donald into that deal. The only way I am trading Carrrasco is in a deal for Harden, as Harden is under contract for two more years at a pretty cheap rate.

    its amazing gillicks been here 3 years and has a pretty long list of bad moves…but i cant trust gillick to make the right move. he has one foot out the door and probaly doesnt give a shit what he leaves behind. he makes me real nervous to make a blockbuster deal

    i dont know that gillick is actually calling the shots anymore. i think him and montgomery and tutoring amaro and theyll let amaro takeover next year which is a HUGE mistake. amaro is such a sychophantic lapdog.

    i heard billy beane might leave after this season or next seasom to pursue a new challenge….i would offer him MAD money to be our GM. i would seriously like make him the highest paid GM and ship him right in here.

    Geoff.. you said we “need a guy that can throw a CG” …. at this point, I’d love any pitcher that can get us 6-7 innings. They look FAR from a contending team right now, so I’d take any pitcher that can shut down the opponent for any stretch of time… Hamels has thrown 2 Complete Games.. I dont think anyone else on our roster has any.

    If we trade Vic, I say we go after Placido Polanco to play 3B and hit in the #2 spot. Talk about a shot in the arm for the offense. He’s hitting .320 and just makes things happen out of the two spot. I think he’d be a great guy for the stretch run on the field, and in the club house.

    their general manager actually knows what they are doing.

    when you dont have a big payroll and you put together a grea tteam. thats all the general manager and the coaching.

    theres no reason pat gillick shouldnt be able to put together a better squad than this by the trade deadline

    It all goes back to that MoneyBall concept… the way to win is to score more runs than the other team.. the best way to score runs is to have baserunners… so you need guys with a high OBP% runners, and then get some hits to drive them in …

    Not.. hope for a hit, and then pray for a Home Run.. which is what the Phillies do now…

    Victorino and Rollins are only helpful to our offense if they get on for Utley, Howard, Burrell to drive them in. This offense just has too many holes, and this ship seems to be going down right now… they are a better team than this, but there projected win total is now at 85.86 …. just two weeks ago it was at 92.something …. just taking their win% x 162 games…

    86 wins in a close NL East is going to make for another interesting September.

    yeah they really do need to focus on runs and baserunning thats exactly right. if you have a small ballpark you dont need to overpay for big sluggers. one of those guys in the future and now should in reality be an awesome contact hitter more than a power guy. in the playoffs its harder to silence contact/on base guys. teams like the rays will be able to get a few runs in the playoffs even if theyre facing studly pitching. the phillies basically cant get any runs off of stud pitchers.

    1) If they wanted Happ and Vic for bedard you have to do that deal. My bet is that they trade Vic, Happ, and Carrasco for bedard. Not a big fan of that one.

    2) Geoff and Don M are right. The Phils have to get on base. period. Someone talk to these pricks about making some solid contact. Shit. Looking at the Rangers and A’s lineup….I know baseball and there’s an assload of guys I’ve never even heard of and they whooped our asses.

    3) I think Werth could be as good a #2 hitter as Vic.

    4) I think its truely time for Myers to go, and I was one of the guys in his corner a month ago. Gotta shake this team up right now.

    5) Cabrera is an Oliver Perez type. Would be a good #4, but would drive us all crazy. he’ll pitch 8 innings of 2 hit ball then have 3 starts where he doesnt get out of the 5th. then he pitches lights out for 5 straight starts, etc.

    6) Logical short term solution. Myers to pen, Condrey to AAA, Happ/Carrasco into rotation. This is right up Phils ally. Cheap solution…..but it might actually work.

    I think if you pull myers from the rotation you maybe can showcase him for a trade in the pen a bit. but you really have to get him out of this organization.

    I agree with that Gavin. There were a bunch of guys on the A’s and the Rangers that I dont know much about it at all and they just made contact and drove in runs.

    I dont think bedard is going to be worth his pricetag. i think hes injured and he hasnt been able to go more than 6 innings regularly this year. i dotn want any part of some injured guy.

    burnett is always injured and he also is an asshole who has no heart.

    i think you have to look at some off of the radar names that might not be in contract years. harang, harden, and others. harden at least has supreme talent when he is healthy.

    i dont like a lot of the other names tossed around. arroyo? garbage. byrd? roided up garbage. wolf? eh if you have to take him back you can. if you HAVE to. sabathia? costs too much and wont be able to resign him.

    gillick will have to be very creative with his decision here. im not a fan of giving away carrasco. that bothers me. happ is 26 but carrasco has an entire carreer ahead of him. you dont throw guys liek that out the door for rentals.

    option 6 is the ideal short term fix gavin. its happ or carrasco. chad durbins having a career year in this role. i dont want to screw with that.

    number 7 is dead on. milt thompson has to go here. theres no reason why a lineup THIS talented from 1-5/6 cant produce.

    No! No Bedard… That’s just asking for trouble and paying for the privaledge, he looked very good without eating enough innings with the O’s and looks like a club house cancer who will miss enough starts for it to be a problem with the M’s.

    Cabrera could be a good move as he could be brought in for a prospect that’s expendable and Donald fits the bill wheras Carrasco really doesn’t as despite all the negative chatter he’s worth the benefit of the doubt for a shot as a mainstay in the Phils rotation.

    Let’s be real here, an impact starter would be nice but the door isn’t closed and we have two solid years before the face of the team starts to change with pitching prospects likely ready for next year including Mathieson, Happ, Carrasco, Outman and Savery that could fill the holes with upside.

    Two sure facts, Santana wont be a Phil and Bedard won’t look like a good Phil.

    Mets still suck because Jose Reyes is the most overrated player in all of baseball…. Beltran and Wright are both very good, but their team isn’t built to win anything… Marlins have no pitching… Braves are just too knocked up, and I’m wondering if they are going to move Texiera to get something for him.. and the Nationals… well, I’m sure they are nice guys…

    Hate to sound like a broken record but I spoke to my buddy from Washington state. He confirmed that Bedard is an asshole and is a locker room cancer. I agree with NJ. An impact starter would be great but there is no reason to dump Carassco, the other guys I would be more inclined to trade, but there is no reason to sell the farm for a impact starter.

    Also is that THE Ricky Battlico, as an Iron Pigs commentator.

    make a trade for any starting pitcher…everyone needs to realize that half the time maybe more these prospects dont pan out…trade for bedard have asolid 1a 1b combo with hamels and win the division and move towards the series…like carrasco or happ isnt gonna help us this year or maybe not even next year…the only prospect i would deam untouchable is harmon the catcher just becuase or GIDP is the worst hiter in the world

    i used to thin kjust one starting pitcher would solve it all too. but they have MANY more problems than that.

    theyre going to need the best of their farm players before the season is over. ill bet carrasco gets the call and does well. and then adam eaton craps out and hes the guy that gets replaced by the number tow starter

    Not to say that its anything big but Matt Smith made his first appearence of the year in the GCL today gave up nothing in the inninng and he struck out 1. Just thought that I would inform you guys about him. Hopefully he can get back to his 2006 self where he was 0-1 with only giving up 2 ER in 20.2 IP

    Bedard may be a dick in SEA, but i never heard that when he was in Balt and he was considered one of the top 10 pitchers in the bigs the last 3 years. I dont see any reason not to trade for him unless you give up to many blue chips. Sea is desperate to deal.

    he may be a frontrunner, but if he comes to a competitive team, maybe he brightens up a bit.

    It would be great to see Happ come up.
    I am Chad Durbin’s father. When Chad was born we lived in the same area as the Happs in Illinois.
    Chad’s mom was from the same High School, and I was from a rival school a few miles away.
    I played basketball against Happ’s father in league play.
    He was a good athlete.
    Happ deserves a shot too.
    I am sure Chad will do whatever is asked without worrying about it.
    He expressed to me that he needs to be stretched out to start and go more than four innings effectively though.

    Chad Durbin has been a quality pickup. It was a good move by gillick. Im hard on gillick but I think that Chad Durbin has been a great addition to this team.

    Isnt he having one of his best years in this role?

    I think that it would be messing with a good thing to move him into the rotation right now.

    i gotta admit i tend to agree with gavin. i hadn’t heard anything about bedard being a cancer in baltimore. in Seattle there are also rumors of the asian players not getting along with everyone else. that whole atmosphere there is toxic, and everyone is pointing a finger at someone else and scapegoating them. put bedard on a contender, let him pitch every 5th day, and he’ll be fine. nobody is asking him to be a leader, the team has chase and jimmy for that. we just need a guy to go out every 5th day and get the job done. bedard is one of the best options out there.

    this guy turned down a 3 year 21 million offer. well guess what? players under 30 dont want 3 years! they want 4, 5, 6 year deals and you have to cough it up. disgraceful that they allowed that to happen

    Lohse at anything more than 21/3 wasn’t a good deal, he’s a very average pitcher having a good year with one of the best pitching/coach manager duo’s for pitchers there’s ever been. 4-6 years and a year or two down the line we’re talking about how this guy hasn’t worked out and we’re stuck with an inflated salary for a guy we want rid of as has happened with the majority of recent Philly FA starter acquasitions.

    If we’re sending our top prospects for Bedard we better be damn sure we’re getting a frontline pitcher who’s going to help the team and right now Bedard is looking like Jason Marquis with an inflated value, a trade’s being talked up at a time he’s making Harden look like a viable candidate for a healthy starting pitcher. In his last 10 outings he’s only made 4 quality starts while Seattle are scrambling to dump the guy before arbitration we seem to be scrambling to off-load our top prospects for him. Do we really want to pay a premium for a guy who scouts and analysts say needs to be in the NL because he can’t handle a full line-up and needs easy outs at the bottom of the order to be effective?

    Remember the 2004 rotation of everyones good but who’s great…? Bedard certainly doesn’t look great and do we really want another Eric Milton?

    To Joe Durbin~ your wish is about to come through. See latest team report on Gillick’s comments regarding choice of options for probable replacement of Myers in rotation. Gillick also stated a decision will be made today on Myers.

    Finally someone talks about the real issue: bedard is having a bad year. i dotn trust him to come out and perform at a high level. even though burnett is healthy hes either a salary black hole or a rental. hell opt out if he pitches well and be gone or if he pitches poorly hell stay and eat 15million of your salary. hope we dont get ourselves in that mess either.

    ill bet the rays acquire cc sbathia. they have a deep farm system and would rather take the first round picks than sign him anyways.

    Tim, any word on Gillick/Charlie’s decision about who will start thursday?

    Im feeling a call up. I havent been able to track down what they decided.
