5 R-Phils Selected To All-Star Game

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, July 02, 2008 01:34 PM

Rosters were announced for the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game. The Reading Phillies have five representatives:

  • RHP – Carlos Carrasco
  • C – Lou Marson
  • IF – Jason Donald
  • OF – Greg Golson
  • OF – Jeremy Slayden

Carrasco has had an up-and-down year in Reading with more ups than downs; Marson has broke through and performed very well so far; Donald has been steady all hear; Golson started the season as Reading’s top offensive force but his Ks remain high; Slayden has more than 60 RBI so far.

Congratulations to those five. The R-Phils have the most players in the EL ASG.

  1. Phil Says:

I wonder if Bestrado would be on it too if he wasn’t hurt?

  2. Matt Says:

Reading is pretty talented, why are they so low in the standings?

  3. Phil Says:

I have no idea how we have such a bad farm?

  4. TJ Says:

These guys get me excited for five years from now, even though chances are only one from this group will become an everyday player in the bigs.

  5. Don M Says:

You just never know with prospects.. for every Johan Santana and Dan Uggla (rule 5 guys) there are the Homer Bailey’s and Brett Myers’ of the world..

Gavin Floyd… if we knew he’d be THIS good, we would have kept him!!

  6. Tim Malcolm Says:

The good players are good, but there’s a lot of sludge in the farm system, as well.

Rumor: Gillick might go back to Seattle next year: http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/07/02/is-pat-gillick-headed-back-to-seattle/

    Intriguing.

  7. TJ Says:

Its taken Gavin a little while to come to where he is today, I think Philly gave him time and couldnt wait any longer with the Garcia trade.

  8. Geoff Says:

Yeah i saw that on mlbtr. good for him. he should be their team president. and take ruben amaro with him to be their GM.

meanwhile we back a truck up onto the lawn of billy beane and beg him to be our GM.

  9. Geoff Says:

our top prospects are probably as good as almost anyones. but there are only like 5-7 of them. we cant afford to give up 3-4 of them for a starting pitcher. it will destroy our team for years if we do that.

  10. Gavin Says:

The Phillies fans are too mean. I like it in Chicago.

I agree with Geoff. Teams that win over many years do it with their farm. teams that trade the farm burn out.

  11. Geoff Says:

Exactly. If they unload the farm they will burn out and SUCK for like 5 years and it will be insufferably painful.

Thats why they need to preserve their system, so that they can keep bringing people up and infuse new blood every year and have a continuous young core that lasts long enough to win a championship.

tahts what youre supposed to do in professional sports.

  12. Gavin Says:

This on SI.com. Very true statement. Will that one pitcher make that big of a difference?

:::4. The fallacy of the one-player-away theory. Look at the biggest trades of the offseason: The Twins traded Johan Santana to the Mets, the Marlins traded Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers, the Orioles traded Erik Bedard to the Mariners and the Athletics traded Dan Haren to the Diamondbacks. Each of the teams that dumped the star player has a better record than the team that gave up young talent to get him.:::

  13. Geoff Says:

Precisely. Im all abobut getting another pitcher, but not at the expense of ANY of your top prospects. if the deal doesnt happen, then so be it they cant beat the red sox anyway

  14. Gavin Says:

Geoff. Thats how the Bravos did it.

  15. TJ Says:

I’m all about building from within. I’m a Packers fan, boo me if you’d like, I know the majority here are Eagles fans, but Ted Thompson (GM) emphasizes draft picks and sets his teams up to be great because of his drafts and utilizing every pick.

  16. Geoff Says:

Yep. I was all about going all out, which is ok IF they would have taken 2/3 from the red sox, angels, a’s, and ragners. then you know theyre really really close. but they didnt and theyre not close. so why widen the gap in teh future by gettin gsome jerk off who is going to be a free agent in the winter anyway?

  17. TJ Says:

With that said I’m not in favor of trading a couple of prospects for a Rent – a – Pitcher because as we all know we dont give pitchers deals for more than three years and no big name is gonna buy into a 3 year deal and we lose him and the prospects we gave up at the end of the year.

  18. Geoff Says:

The eagles used to do that, until they decided that first round picks arent important because andy reid is so great.

i was born and raised here, and i HATE the eagles because of andy reid. i only like a few of their players who i want to do well. but the coach and ownership are the WORST in professional sports. yes thats right. worst.

the phillies have more of a clue than those guys do

  19. Don M Says:

If all of our sports teams were run by Ed Sniper-Snider.. we’d have 10 Championships in the past 100 seasons… instead of 0.

How about the Flyers last season.. they were kick-ass

  20. Rob Says:

Andy Reid is arogant and I am not a fan of him, but that is no reason to hate the whole team. I do agree their Ownership is amongst the most Frugal EVER. They owe the city 150 million i believe while playing in a taxpayer finanaced stadium. Also I agree whole heartedly with Sal Palintonio, “Brett Favre is overrated”

  21. Don M Says:

rumors today have Brett Favre returning to the Packers this year, because “he has the itch” …. If i were him, I’d just go see a doctor about it…

  22. Geoff Says:

I agree about snyder. hes a shrewd businessman who i wouldnt trust to walk my dog but he wants to win and he does not tolerate failure.

they were awesome last year, next year is their year to get to the finals. the penguins lost liek half their team to free agency and marian hossa signed with the red wings.

  23. TJ Says:

I dont think Favre is coming back, this happens to all retirees. They have an itch when the season comes back around.

I’m a Devils and Clippers fan (Thank God for Baron Davis) to round out the four major sports.

  24. TJ Says:

Rob, I’ll take an overrated 3-time MVP anyday over anyone in the history of the position.

  25. MS Says:

i wonder if Gillick thinking about staying in the biz will have any impact on moves this year.

  26. Bruce Says:

Huh… am I on the “PhilliesNation” website? (laughing)

  27. Bruce Says:

Of the five names Tim gave to represent the Reading Phillies in the Eastern League All Star game, I think the Phillies may have a look at Lou Marson when the roster expands to 40 on September 1st. Especially if Ruiz continues to hurt the team offensively.

  28. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Yeah, football? Come on guys.

I’d love to see Marson brought up in September.
