Commentary: Time To Hit Reset
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, July 25, 2008 02:29 PM
A short rumination on the current state of the Phillies:
Say you’re playing MVP Baseball 2005, and your dynasty team is doing pretty well. It’s realistic enough that your team is in first place, but by a couple games. Your ace pitcher, meanwhile, has something like an 11-3 record with a 2.98 ERA.
It’s an early July tilt and your ace, for some weird reason, gives up eight runs in the first inning. You know that would never happen in real life, and you know that while you want to play the season with integrity, you shouldn’t be completely cheated by the computer. So you decide, “OK, just this once this year, I’ll hit reset.” So you do. You re-play the game.
The Phillies are right there, right now.
It’s time for the Phils to hit reset. Time for them to return to Citizens Bank Park, arrive early, communicate, laugh, forget the worries and play baseball. Time to take a strong batting practice, field some balls, lift a little, jog a little. Time to take in the fresh air of the ballpark and feel at ease.
It’s time for the fans to hit reset. Time to breathe in and breathe out. Time to recognize that while this team doesn’t look destined for great things, they’re a game out of first place. Time to take a jog, refresh the mind. Time to grab a cold one, sit back and enjoy the game.
It’s time for the Phils to play light. Time to lay down a bunt. Time to steal second. Time to watch for location. Time to focus on the ball. Time to do jog and stretch between plays. Time to run out every play. Time to focus on the at bat at hand and the play at hand.
It’s time for the fans to renew. Time to get your frustrations out early and once, then support the team. Time to cheer on the big at bats at all times. Time to give due where it’s necessary. Time to hope for victory, and if defeat, time to bow the head, reflect and carry on.
Tonight, hopefully, we all hit reset and more victories follow. We can only hope.

Or MLB08 The Show in HD….
in any event, it is time to his reset. pressure is off, theyre out of first. no more excuses, no more lateness or tightness or swinging at bad pitches or leaving it out over the plate. can they play funadamental baseball? we shall see
July 25th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
I used MVP 05 because I had been playing that since 2005 and had a Phillies dynasty (that was in 2009). Sadly the fire destroyed my XBox (probably time to upgrade anyway), so I lost the dynasty. But oh, those memories.

The question should be “Can those who are meant to lead, lead indeed?”
July 25th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
its time for Burrell to admit he thinks Victorino is cute……..YEAH SHOW HIM THE REAL REASON THEY CALL YOU PAT THE BAT!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!
July 25th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
david sounds like a cool dude.. I take back all the bad things i ever said about Mets fans
July 25th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Tim,
I still rock MVP 05.. the one with Manny on the front, right?? I got the college baseball too, but didn’t really like it that much because the graphics were crappy.
Bretty Myers is NASTY in MVP 05 once you get a few seasons in.
I wish EA would get those rights back and be able to make the baseball games again, i never played the other ones, but im an EA SPORTS buyer
July 25th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
That’s the one, Don. Myers was OK, but Randy Wolf was a stud. Won four consecutive Cy Youngs for me. ERA hovered at 2.60. Here’s how you win with him: Fastball outside … curveball inside to righties; outside to lefties … knucklecurve low (away to righties; inside to lefties).

The Show is awesome for ps3. but mvp 05 was great. id liek ea to get some baseball rights again. they cant get exclusive rights though becaue they ruined madden once that happened.
however, nhl 08 was one of the best sports games ive ever played, as is the new college football.
but mlb the show looks real on an hdtv, CBP looks awesome.

i remember trading for roy halladay in that game. i also had chan ho park in the rotation, and he was mad good for some reason
July 25th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
my rotation was roy halladay, randy wolf, brett myers, chan ho park, and brad penny.
totally unrealistic. i traded abreu and prospects for halladay. traded glanville and prospects for penny. picked up park after he was released by the rangers.

It’s pretty much now or never! We should be able to take both the Braves and the Nats. In the event we lose both , I’m prepared to declare the season a loss. No play offs, no NL title, no World Series. Just a bunch of wasted talent.
On that note, GO GO GO!

Wes Helms was NASTY for me last season… he had crazy power. I hate the game makes Jamie Moyer and others retire, so you have to create players, but then you always make them too good cause you don’t want to short-change them
In college, i was buying every game every other year… now im left with Madden ‘04, College Football ‘05, MVP Baseball ‘05, Tiger Woods 2005, NHL 2004… its just not worth the $50 per game every year when you can just continue your dynasty stuff and create and trade players anyway.. I def need to get a newer Madden but the last couple weren’t that great anyway so i didnt think i was missing much.
NHL 2004 took me a while to get good at too.. that is a game you can play for days on end cause the computer is actually pretty good and will randomly beat you a few games in a row
July 25th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
it is pretty much now or never….i hear victorino is on the trading block, so pat just tell him your true feelings….you know you will feel better. howard did after he told j roll and now they both get to enjoy the vibrating bed.

high heat baseball 2002 for the PS2 was always my favorite. Mainly because swinging was simply pressing a button, other games made that way too complicated.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
That’s what makes MVP so amazing. They just created new prospects and the farm systems were so rich. I traded in the Minors for this kid Brett Mulder, who foudn his way up and was hitting like 20+ HR with a .305 AVG in July (before the fire). I was ranking prospects and all that.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
Hmmm, not a bad idea.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
the last madden was horrrible. nhl 04 was a great game. it was the best one since nhl99 for n64 which is an all time classic, announced by bill clement, who they brought back for this one along. now the nhl games are ill for ps3, i played a bunch of seasons on that one.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
yeah this new mlb the show restocks farm systems with the draft, even though it only has 5 rounds, and it creates undrafted free agents from other countries to bid over. you can scout like a 16 year kid and he wont declare for the draft until hes like 20 so scouting ahead is key.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:07 pm
I kept renaming all the prospects in the phillies farm.. so that I had a Carlos Carrasco, a JA Happ, Josh Outman, Scott Mathesion.etc..
I hate playing other people in baseball games though cause its so easy to throw JUNK and the other guy swings at every pitch anyway..
July 25th, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Are supposed to be talking about our fictional lineups or the one that we’re going to be agonizing over for the next nine weeks?
July 25th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I still have my ps2.. got a house and bills to pay now, so my days of spending all my money of video games and getting drunk are MOSTLY gone
nhl 94 on sega was amazing.. and madden 2001, or 2001… whatever one had the players blinking and you could see the holes in their jerseys.. that was crazy
July 25th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
yeah it is. they made moyer horrible in this mlb game. they constantly updadte the rosters though, liek every other day, to reflect growth/decline. lou marson is liek, God when you bring him up. carrasco is ok when he comes up. kendrick: ok. im in year two and happ is 12-4 with a 3.2 ERA and 145 K’s at the all star break!!!!!!
July 25th, 2008 at 3:11 pm
Nice work, MetHater. Maybe one of these days I’ll compose the official talk about your video game dynasty thread.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
It’s funny that you question the loyalty of these Phils Fans when it seems you’re already looking to hockey season.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
well said tim, well said.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
1 game out of first and you already calling it a season…..you should all be embarassed…………..
July 25th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Tim,
there has to be a way to filter out fictional names.. or you have to be registered or something.. it gets out of hand when these Muts fans try to take over this site..
July 25th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Thanks Tim. If I wanted to talk about video games I’d get in my time-machine and go back to 1994 when I was 13 and finding hair where there was no hair before.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
I said before I liked that people will post as fictional or famous names sometimes. It’s kind of a fun little aspect of the blog. Good posters are good posters, and they’re recognized, respected and known. You’re there.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
The purpose of all this, anyway, is that I think we should all take a breath. I wouldn’t be surprised if Charlie laid into the guys before coming back here. I think we all need to get set for the final 60 and a fun stretch drive.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
not to be a pain or anything but who is this So Iguchi making 1.05 million……does Taguchi know this guy is stealing his money?
July 25th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
nhl 94 was legendary.
yeah i hate those bills. fortunately i already have a ps3 bc i cant afford tha tstuff anymore.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
Let me assure all of you. In no way, shape or form am I a met fan…shea smells like garbage and I’m from South Jersey.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
True dat… it was fun a couple days ago heading into the Mets series..and talking smack about each teams weakness.
but when everyone starts calling each other pussies and acting tough it takes away from the fun of it…
and when Mets fans start posting under Phillies fans names, it makes you not want to read through all the garbage posts…
That said.. I though whoever was Darren Daulton was pretty funny today.. and I really think you guys do a great job with this site.. and it gives us all a spot to vent, or praise the Phillies on a regular basis..
July 25th, 2008 at 3:26 pm
hey Don M. YOU ARE OK….you will never be welcome in Citifield but still you are ok
July 25th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
Wasn’t the internet created so people who couldn’t intimidate a kid on the short bus in real life get the opprotunity to be bad-asses?
July 25th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
yea.. and to look at midget-porn and stuff too
July 25th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
well midget-porn is understandable…it’s like looking at a car wreck. eventhough you’re repulsed by it you’re unable to take your eyes of them…they’re so cute! I want one!
July 25th, 2008 at 3:32 pm
Heard you boys need an outfielder? I am only 40 and I will bring that spark back that we had in 1993
July 25th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Tony. I think that the lack of response should be enough of a response for you.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
yeah tony…YOU’RE NO NAILS!!!!!!!! The only player us Mets fans and you stinky Phillie fans both love.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
You know, these comments seem to slow down once four o’clock rolls around…I can picture everyone at their desk scrambling to get their day’s worth or work done in the last hour.
July 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
the reset analogy was good stuff… and some of these posts make me laugh out loud at work. I have to be honest, I never put too much thought into pushing reset… when i started saying to myself, “you just don’t have it today…” I knew it was time to snap right back into reality and turn the thing off.
July 25th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Hey somebody call Bill Giles….I am available
July 25th, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Don’t attack me, but as a Mets fan, believe me, I know how Phillies fans are feeling right now. The bottom line is this: You guys need to make a lot of noise with your front office and demand a solid starting pitcher. Right now, the Mets are winning because they are getting good, quality starts for the last month from just about all of their starters. You guys have a scary lineup and a great bullpen, but starting pitcher is what wins ball games consistently.
July 25th, 2008 at 4:27 pm
DONT BE HELPIN OUT THE PHILLIES!!!!!! JIM DONT MAKE ME HAND IN YOUR METS FAN CARD!!!!
July 25th, 2008 at 4:45 pm

July 25th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
david please get a freakin life and stop being an asshole. oh and an obvious sign that you no idea what your talking about: I remember a certain tobacco chewing center fielder that both teams fans love. do you know who that is?
July 25th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
