Deja Vu: Eaton Serves It Up Against Arizona
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, July 12, 2008 08:10 PM
Thanks, Adam, thanks a ton.
Adam Eaton followed up his disastrous performance against the Mets with an atrocity against Arizona, an eight-run, seven-hit, three-walk massacre that never left the fourth inning. In fact, the Diamondbacks — who have scored more than a half-run less than the Phillies this season — plated eight in the fourth alone, six off Eaton and two off left-hander RJ Swindle (though he let some inherited runners score). Basically, it was a whitewash, a clearing house, a blue-plate beatdown.
The whole affair killed a class game by Shane Victorino, who homered twice off future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson. He really provided the only offense for the Phils, as Vic had three of the team’s five hits. It’s possible, of course, that they just turned the whole thing off after the fourth.
Going back to Eaton, because there’s no one else to go to — it’s high time to kick him out of the 25-man. Now back in his comfort zone (a 5.71 ERA), Eaton surely hasn’t improved much since last season’s debacles. Sure he’s tempted the 4-ERA gods this year, but these previous two performances have showed he can’t be trusted or left anywhere near a five-man rotation. Couple him with Brett Myers’ entire head-drama, and suddenly the Phils have a tremendously troubling issue at hand — they have three starting pitchers.
And of course, the Mets won. And the Phils are back to a 0.5-game lead with just one to play — a match with maybe baseball’s best slinger — in the first half. Nothing would taste more bitter than a deficit heading into the break, especially with the blue-and-orange ones in front.

Part of me, sadly, actually wants the Soul to lose in the ArenaBowl. Does that make me the most ridiculous Philadelphia fan ever?
July 12th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Victorino showed up, thats nice.
July 12th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
As if the league didn’t all ready know how desperate for starting pitching we are Eaton had to show them. I’ve got a feeling the other GM”s are really gonna put the screws to Gillick to give up Corassco or Marson.
July 12th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
This bum CANNOT make another start for the Phils again…He is nothing but a disaster…Let Chad Durbin start in his place if you have to for right now,he can’t make another start…Please buy out his contract and let him go after this season over…Gillick better be working up some kind of trade soon.
July 12th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Gillick better get off his ass. Adam Eaton has to be released now. LET ME BE CLEAR: THere is absolutely no excuse to start adam eaton anymore. none. i dont care what you do. you get him off this team immediately even if you have to pay him to go away. JA Happ is far better than Eaton.
Also, this should not drive up the cost of pitching for us IF they move NOW. if you wait until the deadline then gillick will get taken advantage of.
wheres bruce at? now that adam eaton has clearly shown, against inferior NL hitting, that hes done. hes all quiet all of a sudden.
im so tired of this shit. we watched it ALL of last season. i cant go through that again, noone can. it has to stop now.
July 12th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Adam Eaton has sucked his entire career. I can’t believe he is still being run out there every 5th day. And why does Charlie feel he needs to keep him in the game until it is lost? They still are a second class organization when slop like that is on the roster. Bring up the kids. They cant be worse than what we saw today
July 12th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
The Adam Eaton disastor cannot be allowed to continue. It is ESSENTIAL that this be resolved QUICKLY!
July 12th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
call up happ and make him take eatons spot in the rotation after the break. myers will be back soon, although i suspect gillick is burning the midnight oil trying to get rid of him too for some kind of long term help at another position. im thinking theyll take burnett on board here within one week. i guess thats ok, but id have preferred harden and i think we couldve gotten him.
typical phillies GM, scared to take a risk. what if rich harden stays healthy now? you look pretty fucking silly for failing to take advantage of that opportunity. that guy has the best stuff in the NL outside of maybe CC or lincecum. definitely better than johan santana. that splitter is awesome.
thanks gillick, you sat on your fat lazy ass while the best two pitchers get snapped up and we have to pick between burnett and bedard basically. unless someone else awesome creeps up.
if we have to go to the B list then mail this season in and might as well just forget about it.
July 12th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
thats exactly right rjz, the kids are better than him, like almost any of them.
they are a top 5 media market team who behaves like a bunch of feeble, second class low rate cheap ninnying, chicken-necked crooks.
its time to grow some balls over there. looks what the flyers and sixers do when they see someone they want. they make it happen.
its time for the phillies to do that. we got lidge because we lucked out that ed wade is a complete moron (boy was that a bad move for houston or what? valverde has been a bust there and lidge has been PERFECT in saves).
July 12th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
I know they made a run for Sabathia, but Cleveland wanted Marson or Carrasco who they refuse to give up…They prolly could of gotten Rich Harden and not had to given up any of those guys, but their too scared to take a risk with him.
July 12th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Eaton must be DFA, and if not Tim, you and Mike T need to send a letter from Phillies nation demanding answers. No one here is dumb enough to say that Happ or Carrasco will be ROY’s or anything, but there’s no way in hell they are as bad as eaton. His game is tired.
Good bye Adam, thanks for nothin’.
July 12th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
exactly, scared like bitches. harden was my guy. wanted him in philly, he has ill ass stuff.
July 12th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
I predict the Phillies panic …..now that the “Adam Eaton†experiment has proven unsuccessful……and trade some good prospects for Burnett on Wednesday. Once they do that they release Eaton. They wont release Eaton until they have locked up a starter.
As much as it makes sense to let Happ and Carrasco get a chance at that 5th starters spot, it wont happen. Happ will join the club in the pen and replace RJ “Whiplash†Swindle. Carrasco doesnt get a tour of CBP until Sept. 1.
Myers returns and pitches respectfully the rest of the year….but not overly impressive… and they trade him in the offseason and bump Carrasco in next year, along with Happ to replace Moyer.
BTW, Moyer has made it clear he doesnt want to be the Phillies pitching coach. He wants to retire with his family in the subs of SEA.
How about Randy Winn? We need more guys like him.
Also, why the hell doesnt Dobbs get any starts in RF when we face a RP?
July 12th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Randy Winn
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3837
and
Benji Molina
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3865
for Harmen, Golson, and Castro.
July 12th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
It doesnt make sense to put happ in the pen, that will ruin him. total waste of stuff.
July 12th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Geoff…I agree, but that doesnt mean it wont happen.
July 12th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
On the bright side… The Eaton Era is Over!!!!!!!!! It can only get better from here.
Here’s to a big second half without the worst starting pitcher in baseball!
July 12th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
I agree NateB. They also might get Paul Byrd
July 12th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
I’m doing it here first folks. I am announcing my retirement from Major League Baseball. I was hoping to become a fan favorite so we could give away Adam Eaton DVD openers as a promo item but I guess it just was not to be!
July 12th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
I’m buying an outfieder’s glove, too. Maybe the Mets will take me.
July 12th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Adam Eaton will not be released. This is a team that saves leftover hotdogs and sells them at a “bargain” for a dollar. The chances of gillick and the owners paying Eaton 12 million to leave are 0%. They will make him pitch. He will be the long man ala Jon Lieber. Its time to start Happ, Carrasco, Durbin, Condrey, Outman, or Bastard. They might be mediocre in a starting role but they can’t be shittier than Eaton. They would have to allow over 26 runs a game. This is not a joke. 26.00 is actually Eaton’s era over the last few starts.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:08 am
Eatons done in the rotation. If they do not release him THIS season or AT THE BARE MINIMUM demote him to AAA, then they are not interested in winning.
That Guy: he gives up runs early before he settles in, so hed be EVEN WORSE in the bullpen. which is frightening. its sad, but clad condrey is better than him seriously.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:47 am
i read on mlbtr that we are on aj burnett’s 16 team no trade list. when it rains it pours.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:49 am
i say leave happ in the rotation and promote carrasco to join him, beacause we don’t have very many options now.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:51 am
oh yeah cleveland wanted matt laporta, not marson or carrasco, so i don’t think we could have got it done.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:56 am
Harden was very gettable i think.
So no Burnett now, who isnt optimally desireable but we cant even get that. Its Bedard or B list stuff. which means no world series rins unless happ or carrasco explode onto the scene.
July 13th, 2008 at 1:15 am
They’re comparing Carrasco to Josh Beckett with no confidence. Bring him up. That’ll give him confidence. Bring up Lou Marson to catch him as well.
July 13th, 2008 at 1:32 am
Must bring up Carrasco if hes ready. I read about him. He is Josh Beckett. The Phillies need to show support and promote him so he can get that confidence. Now, you say what about Moyer and where does the room come from? Well…If Jamie Moyer wants to retire in Seattle then SEND HIS ASS BACK TO SEATTLE.
Honestly, at this point, I would be totally fine with a rotation of
hamels
number 2
kendrck
happ
carrasco
myers traded
eaton dfa
moyer gone
July 13th, 2008 at 1:33 am
THIS season
July 13th, 2008 at 1:37 am
Dude, Moyer has been pitching great this year. You’re insane. I want that experience in the post season.
July 13th, 2008 at 1:39 am
You’d really rather have the 2 kids in the playoffs over Moyer? I agree with 99% of the shit you say on here, but that just made me think you’re hitting the crack pipe.
July 13th, 2008 at 1:45 am
Im pretty pissed at them right now. How the fuck do you give up 10 runs to that bullshit offense? even with eaton in there.
Carrasco isnt ready this year. So Moyer can stay. If carrasco was ready and confident and dealing down in AA id ship moyer out of here so fast top make room for him itd make your head spin. happ already would be repalcing eaton if i was running shit. and i wouldnt found a way to get harden in here if i was gillick. im so pissed about that. watch, harden will be healthy now from here on out and wel regret that shit. so pissed.
so this year youll have
hamels
number 2
moyer
kendrick
happ
eh i guess thats ok. but the al beat the shit out of moyer when thye saw him. what eh hell good will moyer do in the WS? the angels will blast shit into the parking lot against moyer.
July 13th, 2008 at 1:46 am
Im not on crack, but i have been drnking earlier
July 13th, 2008 at 2:08 am
I thought Philly was the “City of Brotherly Love”.Seeing you kids complaing about your Phillies sounds vaguely familiar……….it sounds like the Mets fans as far back as last week. Also,I do remember a time Phillies fans LOVED Adam Eaton.
July 13th, 2008 at 2:19 am
By the way…….can you hear the footsteps, they are getting very fast, close and noisy……can you hear it? Sounds like the Amazin Mets and the Fighting Fish closing in…..can you hear it?Sounds like phillies fans are up in arms and question their teams destiny and throwing poor Adam Eaton under the bus……….can you hear it? I know the NL East can……can you see it? Looks like there is blood on the water, and the Amazins and the Fish are ready to pounce.
July 13th, 2008 at 2:50 am
Yeah, Mets are my favorite to win the World Series!
Mets are as flawed as anyone. Their bullpen has been lights out over 8 games, but historically has been trash. It’ll even out, as will the Mets currently overachieving hitters and bench-journeymen.
The Phils are not this bad offensively, though the pitching is suspect. They’ll pick it up.
The Fish have been overachieving all season, which suggests that they might be the favorite–i.e., if you overachieve long enough, you instead might simply be playing to potential. I’m more afraid of the Fish playing consistently decent than the Mets staying hot or the Phillies crashing and burning. My guess is that it’ll be Florida 1 and the Mets/Phils in a dogfight for 2/3 the rest of the way out.
July 13th, 2008 at 5:13 am
i would much rather the phillies go after maddux, wolf, or lowe than burnett. he is not worth anything significant and honestly to me feels like adam eaton II just waiting to happen. people like to complain “if they go to the B list the season is over”… no, no it’s not. going to the B list worked very well for them last year and the phillies are a better team this year. people seem to forget that we didn’t get swept by the rockies last year because of our pitching… we got swept because the rockies were red hot and we couldn’t hit them.
happ will probably have a starting spot in the rotation for the rest of the year unless he totally blows it, which is fine by me. myers has done well in his minor league starts and will probably come through with a better second half (although still nothing great). hamels kendrick and moyer have all pitched very well. if the phillies can trade myers or eaton and get a better starter in the mix, great, but i don’t want to see them move any serious prospects to do so, because there aren’t any starters available based on the trade talks that are worth a carrasco, marson, or even golson. but no matter what, there’s no reason adam eaton should ever start another game wearing a phillies uniform.
July 13th, 2008 at 7:19 am
New on the wire… The Phils interest in Burnett is less than has been made out and more importantly as well as being able to opt out of his contact (probably best for the team that has him to let that happen and take the draft compensation) we are on the list of teams he can veto a trade to…
I really think we can solve addressing the bullpen in house but fear we will overpay in that area.
July 13th, 2008 at 7:25 am
the NL East is still open.. but c’mon… saying the mets suck is absurd especially when they have taken the Phils in series at home twice… the problem with the Phillies and also their biggest advantage is the little league field called Citizens Bank Park… if everyone is hitting the ball hard the place is a joke a thirteen year old could hit bombs out of there.. so basically when the Phils are on and the other teams off expect the other team to get shelled and vice versa… its going to leave the Phillies around the .500 mark most seasons even if they are good just because any team can come in and have a HR onslaught in that band box… i cannot see the Phils ever being a premier team with a premier record because a routine fly ball in citizens bank is a “bomb”… its a joke and although the stadium is gorgeous and produces great games for fans because of its offensive nature it sucks down the home team who plays there 82 games a year and can get absolutely destroyed on a few fly balls
July 13th, 2008 at 8:26 am
The following ball parks are as good or better hitter friendly parks than CBP
Coors
Wrigley(depending on the wind)
Fenway
Yankees Stadium
Chase Field
Great American
US Cellular
Minute Maid Park
Camden Yards(the park that CBP was designed after)
July 13th, 2008 at 8:38 am
The jays GM says he and Gillick havent even spoken about Burnett. Fuck him.
Bring up Myers, Happ/Carrasco and lets get this shit going. Maybe we can add a guy like fuentes.
July 13th, 2008 at 8:44 am
I kind of want to see Carrasco come up. If he’s being compared to Josh Beckett without the confidence, then god he’s going to be good. Promoting him will give him confidence.
July 13th, 2008 at 8:47 am
reading this page today was a real treat! phils lose this afternoon, and the mets take the field tonight as the First Place Mets. That would make this first half the mirror opposite of the 2007 second half.
July 13th, 2008 at 8:48 am
On mlbtraderumors.com they describe the Phils interest in Burnett as Minimal
July 13th, 2008 at 9:17 am
bigtimemetsfan you have to win and we have to lose. There’s no guaranteeing we’re going to lose. Webb vs. Hamels will be a good match up.
July 13th, 2008 at 9:54 am
Please get rid of Eaton… Please Please!!
July 13th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Grrrumpy Miner, you are obviously not a phillies fan, so stay the hell out of this blog asswipe. You can keep you chocking mets or your GAY Marlins. We in Philly state our opinions as enthisiastic fans who see a need for an improvement in pitching and want the best for our team.
Isn’t it amazing that Philly fans are clearly aware of the need for better starting pitchers but the GM, and coaches are sitting around with their thumbs up their asses? the pitching staff should apologize to our hitters for dragging them down. Yeah, I know that they are not hitting as well as they can but you should not loose a game after even scoring only four runs. GET BETTER STARTING PITCHING NOW. My dad loves the Phillies and is not getting any younger.
July 13th, 2008 at 10:02 am
Hey BigTimeMetsFan, do you remember last year? Deja vu, will be the only treat served this year.
July 13th, 2008 at 10:57 am
Grrrumpy Miner, please explain when any Phillie fan loved Adam Eaton, except maybe way back when when he was a prospect in our system. He was a dumb pickup last year and we know it…..
As for you, Mr. Met. Just worry about your inflated payroll and arrogant players that do some goofy salsa dance when they score one run. And think about how really good Scott Kazmir is. There was a time that all you Mets fans loved Carlos Delgado, and now all you do is bitch about him. Go back to your bandwagon jumping blog that only two weeks ago contained a bunch of whining bitches..
July 13th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Well said PhilliesDiary!!! We will see who has the last laugh when the season is over. We however are a very compassionate group at Philadelphia and will be there to kindly perform the Heimlich maneuver when the Mets once again start to choke.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Bruce and Don M like Eaton. Don M even likes So Taguchi as he has sung his praises on numerous occasions.
