Gameday: Diamondbacks (46-47) At Phillies (51-43)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, July 12, 2008 03:38 PM
Today the Phillies will try and continue their winning streak against Randy Johnson and the Diamondbacks. Johnson isn’t the pitcher he once was, but he has a 10-3 record with an impressive 2.61 ERA in 19 starts against the good guys. Among players with a lot of experience against the lefty, Pedro Feliz is hitting .217, Pat Burrell is hitting .154, Jimmy Rollins is hitting .167 and, somehow, Geoff Jenkins is hitting a respectable .273. Take that, lefties. Jayson Werth also has three hits in nine at bats against him.
Werth got the big hit last night, ending a 12-inning roller coaster. The bullpen was used a bit, but not too much to cramp them. Look for Ryan Madson to get into the game once Eaton is pulled, because Eaton will get pulled.
Phillies: Adam Eaton (3-7) 5.20 ERA
Diamondbacks: Randy Johnson (5-7) 5.18 ERA
Gametime: 3:55 p.m. EST
Weather: 88, partly cloudy
TV: FOX
Lineup: Victorino/Werth/Rollins/Howard/Burrell/Feliz/Bruntlett/Ruiz/Eaton

Your gameday beer: Was at Monk’s yesterday and tried some St. Bernardus Abt 12, an abbey beer from Belgium. Man, oh man, get it. It’s got a strong, dark color and has a bit of a nutty flavor, but it’s so light and smooth you won’t believe it. And it’s potent. Got me tipsy in no time. Eat some ol’ mussels with it.
Go Phillies!

Note the lineup: Chase Utley is out of the lineup. He’s hitting in the derby Monday and playing Tuesday, so that’s one reason. The other: Hitting .000 against Randy Johnson.
Jimmy Rollins is hitting third; Vic is leading off (well done).
July 12th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
Also note: For those who can’t get the game on FOX (New Englanders, for one), the game is unwatchable. To which I say, THANKS A LOT, MLB.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
yes, this game is blacked out in new york as well, I’m watching it on gamecast. Eaton sucks on that format too.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
and Eaton blows the game wide open in the first quelle surprise
July 12th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
what a freaking downer. We’re all pumped after last night’s game, and before the Phils can bat, we’re down 2. Good God this man sucks.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
I think we should give eaton the old yeller treatment…. You know… the part in the movie where old yeller has rabies…
July 12th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
ITs a no brainer now. You have to get rid of this guy. Pay him to go away. I dont care what you do. He CANNOT be allowed to make another start for us. If he does, I will refuse to watch the game until they take him out.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
It’s unlikely he will, a starter will be traded for and now it’s just a case of whether Myers is going to round out the rotation or not… I like the idea of Eaton in long-relief, the pen has been overworked and I’d love to see him earn the rest of this years salary soaking up innings in the pen rather than in a severance package. Maybe he might suprise us like Lieber suprised the Cubs as their swing man.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I didn’t even know this was a 4 oclock game. Looks like I didn’t miss much besides Eaton sucking.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
What a shot by Vic!
July 12th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Aloha means goodbye
July 12th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
yeah, Shane!
July 12th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
So does anyone still want to see Vic relagated to a platoon…?
July 12th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
i’m watching on gamecast, did that one barely clear the wall?
July 12th, 2008 at 4:47 pm
No it was a blast
July 12th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
sweet, i love that hawaiian.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Eaton a good ball player?
July 12th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
You notice beane just plugs those new guys right there there and htey contribute right away…the problem with eaton in the pen is he gives up runs in the first two innings hes in there then settles in. whats the use of that in the pen? clay condrey is more effective in that role.
July 12th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
i can’t stand these announcers. give me harry the k!
July 12th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
vasgersian is actually decent. though tom mccarthy even is way better than he is.
the color man is dull though.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:00 pm
I want Eaton dead
July 12th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
randy johnson is the worst hitter ever in baseball. i cannot believe adam eaton let him drive in two runs.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
sitll think hell be on our team in two weeks?
July 12th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
now theyre breaking out rj swindle.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I bet Eaton still complains about run support
July 12th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
damnit. adam eaton is so bad. 5 runs 4 innings. if this is my team id release him today!
July 12th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
you cant trade him. he has no value whatsoever
July 12th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I have never been so happ to see a fat man who looks like the quakeroats guy/ elmer fudd
July 12th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for Adam Eaton’s unconditional release today…..
July 12th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
I have never been so happy to see a fat man who looks like the quakeroats guy/ elmer fudd
July 12th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Hey fellas. Anyone else want to go halfsies on a hitman with me to whack Eaton?
July 12th, 2008 at 5:08 pm
They take a guy who sucks out of the game for a guy who blows
July 12th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
I am so glad that we needed this guy to be our other lefty.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
PHUCK THIS GAME!
July 12th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
its not often i turn a game off before its over…that homer just put me over the edge
July 12th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
if adam eaton ever pitches again im gonna throw up, hes makin brett myers look real good over here
July 12th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Really underscores our need for another starter and more bullpen help, eh?
July 12th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
At least our newest lefty specialist is consistent – with giving up run-scoring hits with inherited runners
July 12th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Jesus, Mary and Joseph…Swindle sucks as bad as Eaton I think.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:14 pm
Where is the usual group of guys swinging from Adam Eaton’s nutsack? Come on, where are you fucking jerks that were talking about how underrated he was a couple weeks ago? Adam Eaton is a piece of shit. Oh yeah, swindle is a joke too. These cheap bastards in the owners box charge us 45 bucks for a tshirt at the team store and keep shoveling shit down our throats in return. Fuck them, and fuck the phillies.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
Swindle cannot face righties. This is just a bad situation for him. What does Charlie do? Ride Madson from the fifth to seventh? Ugh. Can they score eight runs?
July 12th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
charlie manuel is an idiot. pitching swindle against anyone that isnt a lefty is retarded
July 12th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH DOWN 8? I DO NOT CARE IF THE GUY IS ON FIRE 1 PITCH 1 OUT DUMB BASEBALL
July 12th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
Yeah, they can score the 8, but Chase better get in the game and the pen better not give up any more. I’d rather see Carrasco and Happ instead of Myers and Eaton at this point. I mean, seriously, can Cholly put Eaton back on the mound after the break? I just can’t see it.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Just think about this. The Dbacks are the worst hitting team in baseball. Adam eaton cant get them out.? Are tyou fucking kidding me? I was emabarrased he gave up two runs to them. he gives up 8 in 3 and 2/3? Adam Eaton deserves to NEVER PITCH ANOTHER BALL for the Phillies. If Gillick and Co. send him out there one more time this year they have no clue what they’re doing. I hat this prick. i’ve hated him since he arrived and I’ve never liked the smug fucker. Fuck him and fuck his career.
That shit all started when he pitched around the 8 hitter w/ 2 outs to get to johnson. You dont do that shit. he is the biggest pussy this tema has ever had short of Travis Fucking Lee.
I’m proposing that if Adam eaton starts another game, Phillies Nation should send a letter signed by everyone on the site to the Ownership that all they care about is money, not the bottom line of ………winning.
Fuck this shit.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Place your bets – What day and time during the All-Star break is Eaton released?
July 12th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
It wont ever happen. He’ll get sent down……thats about all we can hope for. They wont release him.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:21 pm
Just shut this one off. I am beyond disgusted with Adam Eaton. He is easily one of the worst pitchers this team has ever had and he has done absolutely nothing to help this ball club. I don’t care about his quality starts at the begining of the season, for they mean nothing now. The rumblings about the Phils seeking Burnett, despite my problems with him, I can only hope are true. It was never a good time for Eaton on this team. It is way past due for these two to part ways.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Sorry guys, I forgot to take out my tampon in the 4th and it starting irritating me.
hey, you guys know of any good place to rent in Allentown?
July 12th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
No I think they just release him, why ruin the kids down at the minors and Eaton has to agree to go to the minors
July 12th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Yeah ‘Adam Eaton’ it is in the middle of the fast lane middle on the turnpike. Lie down and someone will gladly serve you
July 12th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
I’m not sold on Burnett – he’s too injury prone. I’d rather see Paul Byrd for Christsakes. He’s more consistent and will be a lot cheaper to get than AJ. As far as Eaton is concerned, they can’t send him down unless he agrees to do what Myers did (which he won’t), since he’s been in the bigs for more than 5 years. They will have to either move him to the pen, trade him, or release him. If we traded him, about all we’d get is a case of shit beer like Busch Light and cheap Mexican whore.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
Jamie, maybe we can trade him and Jenkins to the Brewers for a keg of Beast.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
I bet Ruiz still finds a way to ground into a dp
July 12th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Ball on the ground and only 1 out??!?! WE should get a run for that
July 12th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
That would be better. Can we through Ruiz into the mix as well and still keep the whore? After looking at Byrd’s stats this season and the past couple, I guess he’s not nearly as good as I remember. Just bring back Happ and/or Carassco.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Swindle may end up with more RBI’s this season that Ruiz and Taguchi if he keeps his mad hitting up!
July 12th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Why not let the whore pitch he/she (depending on what part of Mexico you are in) could not do much worse!
PS Vic = my hero
July 12th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Wow, Vic can hit Randy Johnson.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:37 pm
Holy schnikees…that’s the power from Vic that we’ve been looking for the past two years. We keep this up and they may have a chance to get this thing close yet…
July 12th, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Bullpen gives up 0 runs and three more 2 HR by Vic and we’ll be right back in this game
July 12th, 2008 at 5:42 pm
The worst thing about today is, if the mets can finish this game off (they’re winning top of 6th, 2-0) and the Dbacks finish the phils off…then there will only be a .5 difference in the standings…thats too close for comfort.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
No the worst about today is Eaton is still a Phillie
July 12th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
lol, that too.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
How could Carlos Carrasco be a worse option than Eaton? Other teams bring guys up out of the minors all the time with success. Many times from AA. The Marlins just got a huge game out of Chris Volstad. The Rockies wouldn’t have won the pennant last year without contributions from Ulbaldo Jimenez and Franklin Morales in the second half. Rather than trade Carrasco for a high priced rental, it’s time to see what he can do. Kendrick wasn’t nearly the prospect that Carrasco is and he’s (surprisingly) held his own so far.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Vernon, I agree. Some may say that we need a proven vet to hold our lead in the 2nd half and make a bid for it all this year, but that will come at a steep price for a 1/2 year rental in my opinion. Most of the time, a good blue chip prospect that hitters haven’t seen before have good luck if they keep their composure. With our bullpen, we can afford for those youngsters to leave after 6 or 7 quality innings if they can just keep the game close (i.e. 4 runs or less over 6 or 7 innings). I’d hate to see us give up Carrasco, Marson, Donald, or Golson just to get AJ Burnett’s 5.00+ ERA and $13+ million on a chance that he rebounds the second half. Smells too much like Freddie Garcia all over again.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
I recomend the Steve Jeltz Award be renamed the Adam Eaton Award
July 12th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
If only the D-backs could have done us a favour enough to sustain a division lead enough for the Dodgers to have let Lowe go.
If Golson can headline a deal maybe we make that move but your right it does feel very Garcia like, maybe we get luck and have Burnett walk to a team finishing high enough to get the two 1st round compensation picks and have Carrasco ready and able to take up his place in the rotation.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:09 pm
Wonder if Adam Eaton and David Bell take batting practise together to get ready for a season…
July 12th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
I second Greg’s motion for the implementation of the prestigious “Adam Eaton Award” of non-excellence.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
NJ, I heard somewhere that Toronto is looking for help at short, which of course means they would likely want Donald. Now, if we were able to keep Golson, Marson, and Carrasco, I’d say go for it. They’d probably want a pitcher or two as well in the package, and I’d try to avoid giving up Happ, Savery, or Drabek at this point until we can see more of them and determine if they can help us down the road. I wonder what else Toronto is wanting for the deal to happen…
July 12th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
they need to make a move like today or tomorrow to jump on it. this performance today was total fucking bullshit.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Keg of Beast? Sounds like my last flip cup tournament.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
I get the feeling Toronto want a major league ready shortstop but Donald could likely be a factor. I get the feeling if we play our cards right with Burnett and let him walk we could come out on top with a short-term boost to the pitching and some prospects in the draft.
The problem is when we try and cut corners with guys like Garcia and Eaton and Burnetts DL record looks reason enough to not want him hanging around.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
let’s face it, the Phillies are the 2nd best team in the division. The Mets were incredibly inept in the first half and after Haren shuts us down tomorrow, we’ll be in 2nd place (or 3rd depending on the Marlins). The Phillies have been terrible for over a month. Would another starting pitcher even make that much of a difference?
I’m just venting and this is such a day ruiner. Clint Hurdle’s boy brought their A games this weekend. duchebags.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Yeah, I’d like to give Clint a big heaping helping of steaming shit for shafting Burrell and Hamels too. Prick.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
It would make some difference but they regressed in the offseason excluding the lidge trade. they got much worse. aaron rowand and kyle loshe are difference makers this season for their clubs.
yes, theyre in first place, but this team isnt as good as the post trade deadline team of last season at all. again, excluding lidge.
they need a frontline starter
an everyday outfielder (shane and werth are platoon players, sorry but they are right now)
a setup man
thats the minimum of what they need excluding getting production from what they have. theyre a long way off. this arizona team is a disgrace outside of webb and haren and owings, and hudson.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
the mets rotation is way better than ours.
santana and hamels wash
maine is better than the rest of our rotation
perez is better than the rest of our rotation (when hes on, when hes not hes better than adam eaton and jamie moyer, but not kendrick)
pedro is better than eaton and moyer
pelfrey isnt
moyer is old and feeble out there and relies on tricks. i like him, and hes been good this year, but come on guys. thats not your answer next year.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:42 pm
8
July 12th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Pelfrey is a really good pitcher..he’s just coming around now..he won 5 straight decisions and hasnt lost a decision since may i believe….so i dont see how he’s not better then eaton??
July 12th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Hamels is a stud, Myers a disappointment, Moyer a band-aid, Kendrick average, and Eaton a douchebag shithead. They definitely need a starter or two, from either a trade or the minors. The offense is fine, other than I would like to see more production from behind the plate and at 3rd. The outfielders, platoon or not, are producing pretty well. It all comes down to pitching, and as long as we have average pitching, the offense will be there most nights to lift them. The Mets and Marlins rotations are either young and inexperienced (Marlins), or in shambles and could fall apart any given game (Mets) just like the Phils. Pelfrey, Maine, and Perez are New York’s Moyer, Kendrick and Eaton. Okay, maybe not as bad as Eaton. But, it’s not like they have five Santana’s. Their offense is not as good as ours, plain and simple. We are still the best overall in the East, although the young Marlins are getting better each year.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
this team just got humiliated by a .500 baseball team. thats disgraceful
July 12th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
yeah, I guess I’m just having trouble seeing how this team is going to win the divison. I’m not saying they CAN’T b/c anything can happen, but I don’t see right now how they’re a playoff team. The Brewers added Sabathia and are much better than the Phils and now the Mets are passing the Phillies and I just don’t see how we’re going to catch them unless they choke.
Disappointing but not altogher unexpected. I guess I just got my hopes up when we had an 8.5 lead.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
yeah hes better than eaton i just dont know about kendrick or moyer, pelfrey i mean. moyer always looks liek hes about to collapse and get pounded.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
Yeah, but there’s a lot of baseball left in the season, and Pedro just tweaked his shoulder and left the game earlier today, so they may be down another starter by the end of the weekend too. We’ll see what Gillick and the boys do in the next couple of weeks – they may surprise us.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
To be honest, I’d take Maine and Perez over any non-Hamels pitchers we have. Pelfrey is better than our 5th starter. Besides Pedro, their rotation is pretty good.
Our offense has gone missing for over a month now. We’re not the same lineup as last year. We’ve gotten shutdown by old pitchers, young pitchers, lefties, righties, it doesn’t matter.
The biggest difference from last year to this year is we lost an MVP. Rollins is just a pretty good player this year, unlike last year. We’re just not the same team as last year.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
The pbhillies bullpen is limping into the break. they need another outstanding arm in there to lighten the load.
the rotation has become swiss cheese. anytime moyer doesnt get shelled is a bonus. yes, tahts right. i dont know how he gets anyone out, but he does it. so ill take it for now as my 5th starter. kendrick is my 4th guy. actually, happ can be my 5th guy and moyer can retire.
i need a secnd and a third guy on this team. theyre totally missing.
moyer stuff is garbage, i know hes having a good year but you know what? i need more than taht. eaton should have been released immediately after the game. total dog shit pitcher.
burnett is a 3, bedard can be a 2 when healthy. where the dan haren on thsi team?
July 12th, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Let me put it this way folks – if the Phillies are 7 games behind the Mets with 17 to play again this September, I have no doubt that the Phillies will win the division the same as last year. The Mets just aren’t that good, and Billy Wagner has never been in a big game that he didn’t try to cough up. They have a revolving cast of clowns in their outfield corners and Beltran may be the most overrated player in the game. Giving a four year deal to Castillo was one of the worst contracts ever. Delgado and Pedro are done, and Oliver Perez is a meltdown waiting to happen. Let’s relax with the Mets talk. They have no heart, and they always fold when there’s pressure on them. The only team in this division that I worry about is Florida.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
theyd BETTER surprise us. without legitimate reenforcements they will NOT make the playoffs. i used to think that but not anymore.
if gillick goes to the b list or stands pat forget about it, its over.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
fuck the mets. their rotation is better but thats it.
florida will win the division if the phillies dont act. all florida needs is a healthy rotation, maybe another depth starter, and a live arm in the bullpen and theyll win the division IF the phillies dont act.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Vernon, i just dont see how u can say they have no heart and ALWAYS FOLD? obviously that’s not true or they wouldnt of just gained like 6 games in a matter of a week? in fact, i think this was all just a lack of confidence and now that the mets have gianed it back, they are certainly gaining momentum…tehy now score w/ 2 outs and tehy are now able to come back from a run deficit
ANYTHING can happen, but all i’m saying is don’t count out the mets.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
the phillies let the mets back in it, they should be done now but the phillies are overrated and choked the lead away
July 12th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
They’ve gained six games in the middle of the season when there is no pressure. This isn’t even a pennant race yet. Let’s see them do something the last six weeks of the season.
By the way, Pedro left the game to day with a shoulder problem. I guess it’s back to Tony Armas Jr.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
I predict the Phillies panic …..now that the “Adam Eaton” experiment has proven unsuccessful……and trade some good prospects for Burnett on Wednesday. Once they do that they release Eaton. They wont release Eaton until they have locked up a starter.
As much as it makes sense to let Happ and Carrasco get a chance at that 5th starters spot, it wont happen. Happ will join the club in the pen and replace RJ “Whiplash” Swindle. Carrasco doesnt get a tour of CBP until Sept. 1.
Myers returns and pitches respectfully the rest of the year….but not overly impressive… and they trade him in the offseason and bump Carrasco in next year, along with Happ to replace Moyer.
BTW, Moyer has made it clear he doesnt want to be the Phillies pitching coach. He wants to retire with his family in the subs of SEA.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Geoff you are absoultely right, the phillies let the mets back in..in fact the mets should be like 12 games back but that didnt happen..if you actually think about it, it’s exactly the same shit that happened last season, only reverse.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Can you believe that if we lose tomorrow and the Mets win, then we’ll be in 2nd place at the break? I wont be able to watch one second of the all-star shit b/c you know the announcers will all have hard ons for the Mets and talk about how great they are.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
^^ LOL, but whats funny is prior to this week, the only convo about the mets is how they choked last season, now its gonna be how the mets are coming back.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
>> I guess it’s back to Tony Armas Jr.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
The Phillies were in third place at the break last season and five games out. If I remember correctly, things turned out pretty well. The Mets spit the bit down the stretch and the Phillies had a great September. Relax folks, this is part of the normal ebb and flow of the season. It’s the reason why the season is 162 games long.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
In some aspects I’d rather trail for a little bit. We play better ball when under pressure. I will probably get jumped all over for saying that, but we’re used to chasing, and when we’re chasing we’re playing better baseball. Luckily we’re a 2nd half team. There is roughly 70 games left in the season. Let’s win 40 of them. Let’s also hope that the Marlins lose tonight to keep them off of our tail. .5 games back from the Muts is scary. I agree though, we need to take Eaton out back and shoot him. Who ever suggested the Old Yeller thing is a genius.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
yeah i can believe that. the phillies are frauds. they need like 3/4 moves. to be legitimate. some internal, some external. one starter wont magically fix this mess.
i do think theyll jump on burnett because they cant afford to wait too long. moyer better retire in the offseason. we cant afford that in the rotation next year. i hope myers can fix himself but i dunno.
carrasco and marson arent going anywhere, we do know thjat.
the phillies dont already have burnett because theyve been trying to get him to waive his opt out clause and stay here or something like that. so some difficulties there. happ will stay in the rotation. eaton should be released, knowing that we have to eat his contract. NOBODY wants that contract

youd rather be behind? no, this team needs to play with maturity and discipline. this team is SO immature and sophmoric. they dont hit or act like professionals like 70 percent of the time and they think their talent can solve all problems

we need to matt morris eaton. just say, hey, we dont even want to look at you, just go away

Vernon,
Are you saying that the Mets losing a pitcher that is averaging less than 5 innings per start, with a whip of 1.70 and an era of almost 7.00…
hurts them?

If its any comfort, Jimmy Rollins has you guys going 49 – 18 from here.

Other people keep saying how great the Mets rotation is with Pedro in it, not me. He was done three years ago. Delgado was done two years ago. Castillo is done (with three years left on his deal). Alou’s career is over, and Church may be done for the year. You guys are worried about a team that is trotting Fernando Tatis out there on a daily basis? Are you kidding me? They’ve had one good week out of a season that is now 14 weeks long. Worry about the Marlins – not the Mets.

With how poorly these guys have been playing recently its had to find any optomisim with how well these guys will play in the second half. i find that the mets have found there stride and will continue to be tough team to beat in the second half. the marlins i find cant hit anything but homeruns and have terrible defense, but it is what it is and lets hope they can pull something out of this pitchers due and go into the break on a positive outlook.

Vernon you’re wrong.
It was reported today that Church is NOT done for the year, in fact he was right all along and only had migraines..so as soon as his dl stint is over, he’s back in the lineup.
Pedro is done done, why do people keep insisting, jerry manuekl just reported that it’s nothing serious…he was just being precautionary and pedro WILL make his next start.
and what makes everyone so confident the mets wont make any moves?? you make it sound like this is the roster they are sticking with the rest of the way through.

no one should worry about the Marlins. They’ve been exceptionally lucky to have the record they have. They’re the 4th best team in the division. They have no pitching and will make no moves to add payroll. They’re pretenders.
how do the Mets “always choke”? They did that last year and the year before were in game 7 of the NLCS. The Phillies haven’t won a playoff game in 15 years. I’m a Phils fan and don’t want to pick on them, but facts are facts. The Mets are better and are favorites to win the division.

Griffin, thank you. I just keep wondering why they keep insisting the mets always choke…it happened once and its over with and seems like the team has gone on.
the phillies are not out of it, anything can happen, but to say that the mets are a horrible team and they always choke, have no heart etc. is ridiculous…they are good enough to win the division, end of story.

Worry about the Mets because they do business like a spoilt child who’s not quite happy with the toys he has, the Mets will acquire a leftfielder and we should be worried because their going to win enough games win take the division unless we wake the hell up and start worrying about our clubhouse.
It’s just occured to me the Gillick ‘retirement’ situation has become a distraction and there are too many mixed messages and indecisions. We do not have a direction, we coast and hope for the best.

I totally agree Joshua, the Phillies CAN win the division, but it’s silly to say that they definitely WILL win the division. The Mets will acquire a corner OF now that Alou is out for the year. They’ll get a Nady or someone like that. I don’t think they’ll go for Bonds, but that would make them significantly better despite the fact that everyone hates him and refuses to acknowledge that he can still play.
Anyways, let’s beat Haren tomorrow. That’ll mean we’ve won 3 of the last 4 series and we’ll come back refreshed for the 2nd half of the season hopefully with a new starting pitcher.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
It’s time to do the Burnett trade…He can’t be any worse than Eaton a were desperate for pitcher in the rotation…It sucks all us loyal fans have to suffer because this organization is too cheap to go out a get pitcher like CC Sabathia…He’ll be a free agent along with Ben Sheets this off-season,so they better make a big offer for one of em.

I like that the Mets suck and they’re half a game out. I’d love for a 1st place swap to happen tomorrow but I’m not worried about it if it doesn’t. If the Mets suck so much and they’re neck and neck with the Phillies, one of two things is true:
1. The Phillies suck, too.
2. Anyone who says the Mets suck is delusional.
Personally, I believe #2. Even as a Mets fan, I don’t believe the Phillies suck and I don’t need to comfort myself by pretending they do. The Phillies are a strong team. I know its going to be a big game every time the Mets and Phils face each other. Both teams have had a bad first half (I won’t allow the Marlins into this discussion since I agree with the poster who says they’re lucky… although its hard to STAY lucky for 3+ months so I may end up eating crow… who knows?). Both teams are looking toward a better second half. Momentum is with the Mets… but this is baseball and momentum is fickle… and there’s a big break coming up.
I won’t point to last year’s collapse as proof of anything any more than 1964’s collapse is counterproof of anything. Living in the past is as delusional as saying the Mets/Phils suck. This is a new year. You can HOPE for the same result but predicting it is… well… dumb. I wouldn’t count on an event that’s only occurred twice in 30+ years happening in back to back years.
Good luck defending the NL East championship. I know, from 2006, it was a lot more relaxing watching my team run rough shod all over the division… but this is a really fun ride to be on. I’ll confess my hypocrisy, though. I’m sure I feel a close race is fun because MY team is in 2nd place. If the Mets take the lead, I’ll be the first to say “Ride’s over!” and want everyone to just start losing so the Mets can easily coast to the playoffs… and no, that’s not a prediction, just a desire. On the grand list of desires, I’d prefer someone pay off my mortgage, car, college education for my 3 little ones and maybe send me to Hawaii for a vacation… never been, would love to see.

good post Mets fan, good post. I hope you get your mortgages paid off and enjoy that vacation….while watching the Phils in the playoffs. good stuff though.
