Gameday: Phillies (53-44) At Marlins (50-46)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, July 19, 2008 02:40 PM

Jamie Moyer moved to 10-0 against the Marlins and the Phillies moved to 12-4 on Fridays with a big 4-2 win. They’re back alone in first place.

Of course, the Phils are 11-4 on Saturdays. Ouch. But today Kyle Kendrick goes to the hill to face the Fish. He’s 8-3 this season, and the Phils win a lot when he pitches. Here’s hoping that happens again.

They’ll have to do it against Florida starter Scott Olsen. The lefty is 5-4 with a 3.77 ERA this season, and loves facing the Phils. Today’s game is FOX’s Game of the Week, so the whole country will be watching the Phils. Well, almost the whole country. New Englanders will get blacked out watching the Red Sox.

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (8-3) 4.47 ERA
Marlins: Scott Olsen (5-4) 3.77 ERA

Gametime: 3:55 p.m. EST
Weather: 89, sun, storms
TV: FOX

Your gamenight beer: Back to Sam Adams, and it’s time for an Irish Red. Like many Irish reds, it’s full-bodied and not a bad sipper. Usually a good beer around September, I’m bringing this one in early, as this weekend resembles the kind of September baseball required out of great teams. Let the September play continue.

Go Phillies!

  1. Mike W. Says:

Here in nyc we also get blacked out. What a GD joke.

Also, I’m sure this has been pointed out (but i haven’t been able to read for a while), but Manuel’s complete jerkoff decision to wait til tomorrow for Cole, means he wont face the mets.

  2. chris m Says:

    tailgaiting it. Duck the marlins

  3. Brian G. Says:

    Let’s do this.

  4. Jamie Says:

I feel a big day is in store for Burrell. We need a good 6 or 7 from KK, with 3 or less allowed. Go Phils!

  5. Phil Says:

Whoa, Cantu didn’t make an error.

  6. Phil Says:

    Victorino shoulda bunted there.

  7. Griffin Says:

yeah, in NYC we’re blacked out. sucks. Also, Mike W., we’ve been wondering why Hamels didn’t pitch yesterday and can’t figure it out. Truly idiotic.

  8. Phil Says:

These announcers are so dumb that they’re making my brain hurt. Kendrick’s looking good. Shoulda been a 1-2-3 inning, but Feliz didn’t feel like getting dirty.

  9. Matt Says:

Yeah, Phil - Dick Stockton has no business doing baseball, he needs a better color man than McCarver to help him out.

Not starting Cole yesterday (so he faces the mets on Wednesday) really says a lot about his psyche.

  10. Phil Says:

Good call Jamie. Let’s see if Werth can get it done.

  11. Matt Says:

Howard may be able to hit homeruns, but he has below average baseball IQ.

  12. Griffin Says:

is it just me or do the Phillies seem to always run on contact from third base? They just seem to get a ton of runners thrown out on infield grounders

  13. sean Says:

finally cantu does something to help us other then crush our pitching

  14. Jamie Says:

How clutch would a 2 run single be here for KK?

  15. Jamie Says:

who is the dipshit announcer taking Anderson’s place today? He sucks like a Met fan

  16. Matt Says:

What a waste of an inning. I can’t believe that with 0 outs, and runners on second and third, they couldn’t hit one ball out of the IF.

  17. Jamie Says:

Ugh. We could really have used more than one there. What a waste.

  18. Phil Says:

That shit pisses me off. We shoulda gotten 5 runs that inning. Rollins is a fucking choke artist this year.

  19. Griffin Says:

that totally sucked. Since the game is blacked out for me, I was wondering if the plays at the plate were bad running plays or great defensive plays or what?

  20. Phil Says:

Coste has been choking Ruiz style lately.

  21. Phil Says:

Oh, they were horrible running blunders. Howard should have trampled their catcher. He would have ran into him so hard that he’d fly into the fucking stands.

  22. Phil Says:

Look, the Marlins can capitalize with men on base, but we can’t. This is fucking retarded. I’m about to turn the game off already.

  23. Matt Says:

Phil - But then he might have injured his shoulder and he wouldn’t have been able to make $13M next year.

  24. Phil Says:

Wow, is Kendrick the new Eaton? WTF!

  25. Matt Says:

    Time to get Eaton up…

  26. Jamie Says:

Fuck. That hurt. John Baker of all people. Later in the game, we’ll see Frank Poncherello homer.

  27. Phil Says:

    haha probably true Matt.

  28. Phil Says:

    This game is lost.

  29. Matt Says:

After thinking about it for a few minutes, in all fairness to Howard, there’s only 2 Phillies that I can think of that would have bowled over Baker in that situation : Utley, and Victorino.

  30. Phil Says:

haha probably true Matt. Maybe Burrell if he was in the mood. Huge throw by Burrell btw. Kendrick needs to step it up and not let up any runs the rest of his outing.

  31. Chris L Says:

Bruntlett and Jenkins would have also run him over. Not sure about the Coste but the team and the league in general have a ton of pretty boys

  32. Phil Says:

As soon as the Muts fans figure out we’re down by 2 they’ll come out of the wood work and start talking shit on the blog.

  33. Jamie Says:

No shit Phil. I hate them even more.

  34. Phil Says:

    YEAH UTLEY!!!

  35. Phil Says:

The trolls might be waiting to see if they win and we lose before they jump on our blog to talk shit.

  36. Phil Says:

Man, if he would have gotten his bat about 1 inch more under that ball it woulda been gone.

  37. Phil Says:

God dammit. I’m sick of these douche bags not being able to situationally hit. They deserve to lose this game.

  38. christopher Says:

nice work from pedro and coste. one run game.

  39. christopher Says:

and now tied! very nice inning.

  40. christopher Says:

werth sure isn’t looking like an everyday player this game.

  41. Griffin Says:

that’s a great point about guys on this team who would run over the catcher. Howard and Burrell definitely not. Utley, Victorino and Bruntlett yes. I don’t know enough about Jenkins (he hasn’t gotten on base since May). I think Coste yes and Ruiz yes. What about Werth, he seems like the kind of guy who would. Rollins is too slight.
On another note, Josh Beckett is filthy. And since Eric Karros is the color man for this game, I can only imagine that you guys are getting McCarvered.

  42. Griffin Says:

    yes, Pat!

  43. Phil Says:

Way to pull an Eaton, Kendrick.

  44. Phil Says:

Wow Kendrick…how does it feel to be back to having over a 5.00 ERA? I’m sure it will be.

  45. Phil Says:

You know what, maybe this isn’t Kendrick’s fault. Ruiz makes his pitchers SO much better.

  46. Thom Says:

I think kendrick hit the wall of innings its more then his total last year so he hit the wall.

  47. Jamie Says:

No, he just sucked the big Eaton cock today, like a Muts fan. He hasn’t had this bad of a start since his 2nd this year. Maybe Pat will rescue us yet - we’re only down by 3, and there’s a few innings to go.

  48. Thom Says:

no one can do as bad as eaton.

  49. Gavin Says:

How do you think Eaton will do in that situation? That will be his role when Condrey gets sent out. He pitches his ass off. I’m not saying he’s the next Lidge for God’s sake, but he is a solid long reliever.

Eaton would have thrown 25 pitches in 1/3 of an inning and then rolled his eyes when they ripped his tits.

His quote after he pitches 1/3 of an inning in relief, ” I just have to figure out how to stay out of the big inning.” No shit.

  50. Phil Says:

These announcers are the worst of all time. All they’ve done this whole game is talk about other teams. They’ve gotten players names wrong too. It’s horrible. How are they allowed to announce a major league game?

  51. Phil Says:

Did anyone else smell that striek out coming from a mile away? I love how they showed he has 5 career grand slams and then they say Howard has 4 career grand slams. These guys are so dumb.

  52. Phil Says:

GOD DAMMIT! 2 times in this game they don’t do shit with the bases loaded. I’m sick of this shit.

  53. Griffin Says:

    nice job Kyle. yuck

  54. ryan Says:

i feel like the difference between yesterday’s win and today’s loss is that yesterday they played a clean crisp game with very good defense. i feel they lost today because they played sloppy defense a couple of times.

  55. Phil Says:

Bad running of the bases and lack of key hits with bases loaded or RISP in general.

  56. metsfan Says:

Why is Cole not starting against the Mets? That is a mistake.

  57. John g Says:

More good news…..looks like the Brewers made another move tonight, possibly for a lefty reliever. According to the Milawaukee paper website, it may not be announced til tommorow. IF this is true, another case of someone beating us to the punch. The deal may also be for a Ray Durham type, which would never bother me at all.

  58. John g Says:

Darren Ford is involved, from beautiful Vineland NJ

  59. John g Says:

and Mets Fan, they say they are trying to save him innings right now so he is ready for late in the year. I guess he is on pace for like 230 IP and he has never thrown more than 200 at any level.

  60. metsfan Says:

Give him some rest another day. I would not rest him against the mets!

  61. Thom Says:

Its for houston street mlb trade rumors says could be delt to the brewers this is not a good move because he isnt what he use to be and is over worked and blew the save again today against the yankees

  62. metsfan Says:

Street would be a good pick up for them. He might not of pitched great this year but in the national league and facing batters that have never seen him might help.

  63. John G Says:

No, read the blog further on the JS website. ITs not for street;, its for that lefty from SF and Durham, and they gave up a great hitting C prospect, (angel salome).
