Gamenight: Braves (48-53) At Phillies (54-48)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, July 25, 2008 05:14 PM

The Phillies return home to tangle with the Braves after a diastrous final two games in Shea Stadium.

Re-charge: It’ll be essential for the Phils offense to come out of the gates. After looking bad against Oliver Perez and the Mets yesterday, they’ll have to face young stud Jair Jurrjens.

Burying the Braves: The Phillies are 8-1 against their rivals from down south. They’ve swept them twice at Turner Field.

Chip Off Tonight’s Block: Chipper Jones has a strained left hamstring and will sit out tonight’s game. He sat out the last game one between these two teams, but came back to play the final games of the series. A report said he wasn’t optimistic about his return just yet.

Knock ‘Em Out: Last season the Phillies kicked the Braves out of the playoff race with a late-season series win. It’s possible the Phils could do the same this season with a sweep right here.

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (8-4) 4.87 ERA
Braves: Jair Jurrjens (9-5) 3.22 ERA

Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 85, partly cloudy
Lineup:

MLB TV
MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday

Your gameday beer: The picturesque Shoal’s Pale Ale from Smuttynose is today’s pick. Brewed in New Hampshire, it’s a very pastoral kind of beer. Very easy to sip in the summer sun. For a pale ale that’s not always the case. But you’ll want to get your hands on this one.

Go Phillies!

  1. Call up Happ Says:

It’s funny how Oliver Perez is “bad,” but Jurrjens is a “young stud.”

Phillies kick the crap out of the Braves, and I’m sure the Mets will come off their emotional high against the Cardinals. Phils will be back in first place on Monday.

  2. RiVLez Says:

Actually if you read it again it says: The Phillies looked bad against Perez. I hope the Phillies can sweep the Braves just so we can say they are done and out of it and let them start the selling process.

  3. Call up Happ Says:

I was referring to a different post, Rivlez.

  4. Joshua Says:

    call up happ:

what makes you think the phillies will be in first on monday? i do not think so.

    check this:

since june 13, the phillies are 14 – 20, batting .220 as a team and avg less then 4 runs per game…that doesnt sound like a first place team to me.

  5. Bill Says:

I hope you are right about the Cards beating the Mets. We just need to take care of our own business.

    http://myteamrivals.typepad.com/phightin_phils_phorum/

  6. Call up Happ Says:

Josh: I only say that based on how the Phils have dominated the Braves this year. Take 2 of 3, Mets lose 2 of 3, and Phils are in first again.

  7. Joshua Says:

true, the phillies are 8-1 against the braves, plus chippers not playing…the braves will be out of contention in about 2-3 weeks.

  8. Greg Says:

How about this? For the next two series against Braves and Nats: We win 5, that puts our record for July at 15-10, and is our best month yet. We win 4, 14-11 isn’t too shabby either.

F the Mets series, let’s get this train back on track.

  9. J. Thomas Says:

There are 60 games left. If the Phils win at their to-date pace they will end up with 86 wins. That might be just enough to win the Division. This is a team that can’t hit good left hand pitching; doesn’t believe in ’situation batting’; and is average to good in all other phases of the game. There isn’t likely to be any significant roster changes. Slumps and moods will come and go.

It seems to me the best thing for us fans to do is to sit back and enjoy and leave the tactics, strategy , psychology, etc. to Charley M and the players.

  10. Joshua Says:

86 wins?? that might not be enough.

  11. that guy Says:

Can anyone tell me why Rivlez is still here? Shouldn’t he be on cardinalsnation.com this weekend. Me thinks he is a closet fightins fan!

  12. TJ Says:

I respect that RiVlez is still here because he knows we actually talk baseball instead of our new “Famous” shirts and “how we cant wear our new fitted Mets caps because my hair will get messed up” like the Mets fans over at their sites. Not like Ive ever been to one but I can imagine. RiVlez is OK by my standard, and OK is pretty damn good for a Mets fan.

  13. that guy Says:

TJ: How about his alter ego Joshua? Is he okay too? You guys seem to be missing the point of this rivalry. I highly doubt red cox and crankees fans would be having this love fest. Stop defending the NAMBLA members before I get Danny on your ass.

  14. Chase Mutley Says:

Giving respect where it’s due, not my site but, I welcome ANY teams fans here so long as they’re as knowledgable and reasonable as RiVlez.

Do you people get out at all? I work with Mets, Yankees and Red Sox fans and we talk baseball all the time without acting like faggots like 99% of the Muts fans on the internet.

  15. metsfan Says:

What is this about Met fans? I am a Met fan and do not act like that. Its all n good fun. My girlfriend is a Phillies fan and we have a good time with it. Not all Met fans are a**holes.

  16. TJ Says:

that guy: Danny is a little bitch first of all. I’ve never seen someone be so offended on a blog before. And why wouldn’t you welcome other teams fans in here? As long as their reasonable then I don’t mind them. Of course there are the dickhole Mets fans that can’t spell David Wright correctly and rant about how new york is the best city in the world when they live in New Brunswick.

  17. TJ Says:

What else is new? Man left in scoring position with 1 out.

  18. NEPA Says:

Wow, same old shit already. I guess I’ll hit the reset button a second time.

  19. TJ Says:

I like that Victorino stole but Utley down on strike, suprise, and J-Roll pops out to begin the game. All I have to say is why? Just why?

  20. AGH Says:

“MVP? F_ck you!” Chase needs to be dropped to the 7 spot in the order until he finds his stroke. MVPs dont have multiple stretches where they don’t get a hit for a week.

  21. Geoff Says:

Nady and Marte were both pulled frmo the pirates game and they have BOTH been traded. no word yet to who or for what.

    thats from mlbtr

  22. Call up Happ Says:

    Geoff: going to tampa
    rotoworld.com

  23. Geoff Says:

    damn it.

  24. Geoff Says:

you can compare us ot the rays in many ways, but the rays saw their weaknesses AND WENT OUT AND GOT IT DONE if it is indeed them. we got blanton, ok, fine, but we sitll need ANOTHER starter and ANOTHER reliever and ANOTHER outfielder. where are they at??

  25. Geoff Says:

now one of the easier guys to get could be something elsewhere.

  26. Call up Happ Says:

Starter = Happ (hence the screen name)
Reliever = plenty available for cheap
OF = Jason Bay, if Pittsburgh is still selling?

  27. Call up Happ Says:

stand corrected: The Yankees have reportedly acquired both Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from the Pirates.

No word yet on the return, but Melky Cabrera is still in the game for the Bombers. The team’s top prospect, Austin Jackson, might be involved for that kind of return. The Yankees figure to have Nady rotate between the outfield and DH, but he’ll be an everyday player. Marte will help set up for Mariano Rivera. The Pirates could make John Grabow their new closer and Steve Pearce their right fielder.

  28. Geoff Says:

yeah they are selling i think. word is maybe the yankees are getting one of them. i was just in pgh for a wedding over the weekend, and they said bay REALLY wants to stay. but i knew nady and marte would move because they said they were going to be gone in a week. jackwilson is going to get traded. maybe they will move bay. snell will stay, and the pirates need pitching. theyre about ready to call one of us up and put us in the rotation because they cant find poeple who can start.

  29. Geoff Says:

damn, the yankees got both of them. ian kennedy is probably going as one of the prospects.

  30. Geoff Says:

ian kennedy and austin jackson and another prospect or two is a good haul for the pirates

  31. Geoff Says:

thats such a typical yankees move. good move, but the yankees should be sellers but theyre the yankees. the yankees arent ever sellers.

  32. Craig Says:

Is that the same Ian Kennedy that Cashman refused to give up for Santana?

  33. Geoff Says:

i dont know who they got back, just guessing

  34. smithy Says:

Yankees haven’t lost a game since the all-star break and are just 3 games back of a playoff spot. With Matsui out for the year this was a very smart move. Allows Damon to DH and gives them a big bat with Posada on the DL for who knows how long. Abreu is a free agent and Nady will slide over the RF for 2009. Ian Kennedy is a big chip to give up, but he meant nothing to the Yankees as far as making the playoffs in 2008 is concerned, and we all know how they live in the now. Unless they also make a move, it’s hard to see the Rays sneaking into the playoffs now. too bad…

  35. Call up Happ Says:

Rotoworld: The Pirates will get Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf and two other prospects from the Yankees for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, SI.com’s Jon Heyman reports.

  36. Adam_Stein Says:

THAT’S A BUNCH OF CRAP!!! THEY WANTED CARRASCO, OUR #1 PITCHING PROSPECT, AND THEY GET 2 SHIT BUMS FROM THE SKANKS. BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!

  37. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Ian Kennedy? I guess now the Phillies are the Pride Of Pennsylvania now.Buckos are just a mere shell of what that once proud franchise was. Now who do the Phillies covet?

  38. Geoff Says:

that cant be right. who are the other two?

  39. Jason Says:

What a steal for the yanks.

  40. Call up Happ Says:

also involved, LHP Phil Coke. I need some coke to deal with this lopsided trade!

  41. Jason Says:

Tabata is the only “name” in this deal.

  42. YankeesFan Says:

Face it you do not have the young talent the yankees have. Besides, they want to deal with a class A organization.

  43. Geoff Says:

the yankees didnt give up shit. they gave up one guy. ross ohlendorff? ahahahahahah

  44. Call up Happ Says:

By the way, our offense isn’t doing anything tonight, and the Mets are again up big on the Cardinals. Will the suffering ever end?

  45. Geoff Says:

dude, that tells you a lot about our prospects. tabata? ok has some potential. ross ohlendorf? garbage. kontos, coke? ok. maybe 2 B’s and 2 C’s? maybe tabata is an A. i dunno enough about them. but if a prospect is awesome ill hear about how theyre cant miss.

    i wonder what gillick offered?

  46. Geoff Says:

yeah the offense is shit. they need a stuf outfielder to force shane and werth into a platooon. ive said this before and im sick of sayiing it. i dont care what it costs, just go get the best outfielder you can.

kendrick is pitching pretty well tonight. nice running catch by burrell there. ANOTHER taguchi for burrell switch. damn it

  47. Call up Happ Says:

The Yankees have acquired Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from the Pirates for Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendorf, George Kontos and Phil Coke, the New York Post reports.

i.e. the Yankees gave up nothing for a .320 hitter and a decent set-up man. why do teams always line up to get raped by them?

  48. Geoff Says:

im tired of saying the same shit. they need a huge shock move. bigtime outfielder. bigtime pitchers. i said theyd need two more starters. i said theyd need an everyday outfielder. i said theyd need a setup man. what do they need? just that. other have said that too, dont get me wrong, but i always get attacked for saying that shit.

  49. that guy Says:

How do you aquire a solid bat and a solid arm for Paul Orndorf? Why did we give up two strong prospects for a meatball pitcher? Wtf are these guys doing? Our management team is truly wretched. Btw, I referred to Joeseph Blanton as a meatball pitcher because he throws meatballs and he looks like a guy who ate 62 meatballs before the game. By saying that he ate that many meatballs I am saying that he has a weight problem. By saying that he has a weight problem, what I’m trying to say is that he is a fat pig. In addition, jimmy rollins=willie mays hayes, and chase utley=bump bailey

  50. Geoff Says:

dude, the pirates owners DONT WANT TO WIN. THEY WANT TO TAKE YOUR MONEY. i lived there for 6 years and watched them get a new stadium and spend even less money the next year.

  51. Geoff Says:

the phillies owners, sometimes, well often, act like that too though.

  52. RiVLez Says:

Holy crap the phillies can’t score runs if their life depended on it right now. If this continue through this weekend, I would think that a drastic change needs to be done to change things up a bit.

  53. jeff Says:

rollins is the worst shortstop in the nl east right now

  54. RiVLez Says:

I went to Pittsburgh many times and PNC is just beautiful and the fans were great and very knowledgable. It’s just a pity that the management is that big of a POS to not help this team in anyway. Any WTF, the Pirates didn’t get shit for Nady and Marte. Marte is one of the best left handed relievers in baseball. I doubt the Phillies and the Mets were willing to give anything for them both.

  55. Geoff Says:

i agree. pnc park is THE best park in baseball hands down. totally beautiful. they waste it by not spending money on that team. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PLAY MONEYBALL WITHOUT BILLY BEANE.

    see wade, edward.

  56. that guy Says:

I also don’t understand why our announcers were trashing francouer and praising myers for their stints in the minors. Francouer was in a slump and worked out of it while Myers is born loser. I can’t bear these jerks without Harry. I swear they take peyote before some of these games. Fire ‘em all. Harry and LA on TV and make Rube amaro and tom gordon call the game on the radio.

  57. RiVLez Says:

What is up with Rollins??!?!?! He’s been so sporadic. He shows a few flashes of last year and then just goes in a slump. IMO he’s the most important part of this Phillies team.

  58. jeff Says:

yeah and to chris wheeler every pitcher is a cy young

  59. Geoff Says:

i KNOW. wheelers slobs the knob of every opposing starter. rollins has become trade garbage.

  60. Call up Happ Says:

call me crazy, but I smell a rally coming

  61. Geoff Says:

this is sickening. like i said. taime to get shocked. manuel said either theyll fix it the easy way (internally) or the hard way (by trading people off)

  62. Greg Says:

If these guys waste another solid pitching outing I don’t even know what to say. The offense is a joke right now. Utley, Rollins, Jenkins, Howard…. they all sux right now.

  63. jeff Says:

they need something right. this is bad

  64. Geoff Says:

they have to do something this weekend. so many big chips have already gone. this is an early bird year because sabathia went so early. gillick has to see the trend and move on it. caught asleep at the wheel again

    nice inning by durbin

  65. Greg Says:

Ever notice the Phils hitters get dominated by any pitcher that is decent? These guys simply can’t hit unless the pitcher is terrible. I have an idea, why don’t you strike out more guys? Why don’t you play more piss poor lack of fundamentals baseball? Why don’t you mope when things don’t go your way more? Be an effin man and earn your million dollar salaries you bunch of fairies.

  66. Geoff Says:

i htink this team mightve been a one year fraud. this has happened too often. i hope not but they sure look like it

  67. Greg B Says:

    make them hit. please?!!

  68. Greg Says:

This team lacks every intangible in the book.

  69. that guy Says:

Quote from Wheels, “its not like guys aren’t trying down there”. Thanks for that t-ball analysis Chris. I guess he forgets that these guys are getting paid to perform their job duties. From now on I am going to ram my car into the building I work in every time rollins swings on the first pitch and pops up. We will see how long I keep my job if I repeatedly act like an asshole like rollins is right now. If only I worked with chris wheeler so he could tell my co-workers “its not like he’s not trying to park his car in a regular spot.

  70. Greg Says:

Jesus, the gayest player in all of baseball (Jose Reyes) has more heart than our entire squad of fairies.

  71. Jason Says:

I agree, PNC Park is the best park I have ever been too.

The Phils better do something soon. Either start winning with whats there or make the big trade with which to win with. I think we have all had enough of the mediocrity.

  72. Geoff Says:

    jeez what the hell

  73. Flamer Says:

Greg, are you trying to say gay people have no heart?

  74. Geoff Says:

theyre one run behind and they look totally lifeless. what thw fuck? its like they already quit and..thats not a strike damn it

  75. Geoff Says:

WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how did he not get on base.

  76. Geoff Says:

correction wheels it been that kind of 6 weeks, not that kind of night. when it lasts for 6 weeks it becomes disgraceful.

  77. Greg B Says:

well, they apparently hit the ball hard that inning.

  78. Greg Says:

Not really, don’t be so literal. Point is no one has less than Philbos.

  79. Greg B Says:

maybe we can trade Utley and Rollins for that guy

  80. Greg Says:

These guys are a disgrace. Pitching has been extremely solid the last few weeks and the “strength” of our team has let us down. 1 run in the last 17 innings. Factor out the 9th of game 1 v the mets and we have 6 in 34 innings. Despicable.

  81. Greg V. Says:

I hope these losers get booed out of the Bank tonight! What a disgrace!

  82. that guy Says:

Not sure I can contribute. Ocean City Boardwalk has me at 64mph on the gun. You could definetly trade me for gillick though. I am plenty capable of sitting around doing nothing. Btw, I guess Lidge is gonna suck now so he can fit in better in the clubhouse.

  83. Geoff Says:

this team, in its current form, is DONE. goodnight. they need BIG moves. THEIR SEASON IS OVER OTHERWISE. i fucking said they needed to make big moves at the deadline and thye made one incremental move with blanton. not nearly enough. if thats all their going to do then just BLOW IT UP.

trade jimmy rollins for prospects. trade trade trade. get these overpaid assholes the fuck out of my city.

  84. Greg V. Says:

Oh my god, even Lidge sucks tonight! What a joke this game is!

  85. Geoff Says:

ill try and remain calm until the deadline. but i dont think i can.

  86. Jason Says:

    Now its over.

  87. Greg V. Says:

OOOOOOOOOOOOK! I jus shut this one off! Don’t know about the rest of you.

  88. Call up Happ Says:

Boy, you know things are heading south when even Brad Lidge is getting beat up.

Bad news – we’re going to be 2 games back
Good news – we’re facing Mike Hampton tomorrow. If we can’t beat him, it’s time to call it a season.

  89. jeff Says:

yep and i just wasted two hrs of my life

  90. CT Says:

    christ

  91. Chase Mutley Says:

You know it’s a rough night when you want to agree with Geoff. I’m not jumping off the bridge yet… however, I am turning off my TV.

Lets bring back Abreu next year ; )

  92. Geoff Says:

HAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHHA even lidge gets lit up. FUCK!!!! there is NO argument now . they are cooked. brad lidge gave up 5 runs in one inning! when that happens you know theyre in trouble.

rollins goes this weekend if im the GM, no questions asked.

    victorino goes
    jenkins goes
    ruiz and coste go
fuck, you know what its easier this way….

utley hamels blanton kendrick burrell howard lidge happ can all stay. EVERYONE else goes. this year. theyll actually start doing better if you sell some people off. just watch. trade rollins and victorino and they WILL surge right back INTO FIRST PLACE..

    yes thats right

  93. Adam Eaton Says:

Hey guys! I’d have gone in and pitched that inning but my ass is too sore from all this sitting down!

  94. Geoff Says:

thats whats funny. is theyre getting blown out and they still wont trot eaton out there

  95. Greg V. Says:

Yeah this is definately one of those moments where I just throw my hands up and say, trade the lot of ‘em! I second Geoff’s list of people who can stay, except I’ll dump Blanton too!

  96. that guy Says:

That’s the end of that! These guys are in for a rude awakening if they keep this up. There are a lot of guys like me that have tickets to 5 or 6 games remaining. That environment can turn ugly on the home team about in as much time as it takes Joe Blanton to eat an eclair.

  97. Jamie Says:

fuck these guys are pathetic lately. they need their asses kicked before it’s too late, although I think charlie may have already lost this team

  98. Geoff Says:

blanton is on the keep list because theyve only had him for a week, so im being nice to the guy because none of this is relaly his fault.

ive seen teams surge before if you sell off a few guys. all of a sudden they end up in the playoffs when you thought they were sellers.

  99. Geoff Says:

blanton is on the keep list because theyve only had him for a week, so im being nice to the guy because none of this is relaly his fault.

ive seen teams surge before if you sell off a few guys. all of a sudden they end up in the playoffs when you thought they were sellers.

  100. CT Says:

is it possible to give the steve jeltz award to the whole team?

  101. VA Steve Says:

Actually, I would start with Manual first. We need a big time shake up, send him packing. Besides, you could tell Lidge didn’t have it tonight, was no where near the plate. Never should have been pitching to Mccann. Big Mistake Charlie, now go find a job. Start there, trade some pieces, find some people who WANT TO WIN.

  102. Geoff Says:

hes lost them. they will finish 3rd or 4th if they dont ship some of these assholes out of here

  103. Geoff Says:

tonight is the low point of the season. theyre losing 8-0 to a braves team that is going to sell at the deadline. maybe we should sell too. noone has any fire out there.

  104. Jamie Says:

if condrey has any hair on his nuts, he puts one right in mccann’s ear his next time up.

  105. Greg V. Says:

Yeah I say the Steve Jeltz goes to the Philadelphia Phillies.

  106. Call up Happ Says:

VA Steve has a point. The last time Manuel wasn’t managing, Jimy Williams was guiding the Phils to a 6-run 9th inning come from behind win over the Mets. The Mets made a similar move removing Randolph for Jerry Manuel, and they turned it around with the same personel, but a different attitude. The Phillies don’t need new players – they’ve proven they can win with the players they’ve got. What they need is an attitude adjustment.

  107. Geoff Says:

agreed. the jeltz goes to the entire organization

  108. dope Says:

Jamie – your answer for sucking is hitting the opposition in the head?

  109. danny Says:

I think I truly hate this team.

  110. Geoff Says:

i really like charlie, but hes gotta go. hes lost this team. when a manager loses the team he has to go. it sucks because hes a great charachter, all time classic personality. but he lost the team. sorry

  111. Jamie Says:

maybe we need to start the “Steve Jeltz of the Month” award and give it to the whole team. Rollins has been playing like shit, Vic mediocre, Utley shit, Howard mediocre, Burrell mediocre, and the rest of the offense shit. Pitchers are hit or miss except Cole and Moyer. And they don’t seem to care. I used to be a big J-Roll fan, but i must say that the shit he has been pulling and his shitty “I don’t care attitude” needs to go.

  112. PhilliesSuck Says:

Phillies are really heating up now!

  113. Jamie Says:

Well, no, but it would just make me feel good right now. People say violence doesn’t solve anything, but I disagree…it solves EVERYTHING.

  114. PhilliesSuck Says:

They look like they will finish 4th in the NL east if the Nationals don’t catch them.

  115. dope Says:

so, Jamie, do you also support the Taliban?

  116. VA Steve Says:

Don’t waste any time, shut Charlies door in about 10 minutes, shake his hand, wish him luck, go out into clubhouse and light a fire under the players asses. Its now or never, and let Jimy Williams take a turn.

  117. Jamie Says:

well well well, Ryan…we could have used that earlier. it doesn’t mean shit now.

  118. Greg B Says:

I wish they would have got shut-out

  119. Chase Mutley Says:

Thanks Nolan Ryan Howard. Too little, too late.

  120. PhilliesSuck Says:

Mets WIN! PUT IT IN THE BOOKS!!

  121. Jamie Says:

no, dope, I don’t. Do you?

  122. PhilliesSuck Says:

Wow, Phillies 2 games back and counting!

  123. Fran Says:

im almost embarassed to be a phils fan right now

  124. Greg V. Says:

Good job Howard! That was a rally I’ll never forget!

  125. Greg V. Says:

I’m starting a petition to get the A’s back in Philly and sending the Phils to Oklahoma or something.

  126. Fran Says:

i dont see why everyone is getting on ryan howard. Would you rather him strike out there???????? at least he didnt give up

  127. Chase Mutley Says:

C’mon fellas, we’re starting to sound like Muts fans. The team stinks right now but all the ridiculous “trade Jimmy” / “fire Charlie” stuff is kinda wack. This team is playing like garbage now but you know they have the talent. Jimmy is capable unlike say, Adam Eaton, who there is no saving grace. We need to add, not subtract. We’ve got half of the puzzle, we need the rest.

  128. Phils Says:

this team is done and this season is history

  129. Greg V. Says:

Nah, I think I’d have been happier if he struck out! That dinger was just rubbing it in!

  130. VA Steve Says:

You know, I’m not embarassed, been down this road TO many times. I really don’t know where my loyalty comes from ……. sorta warming up to the Rays. FIRE CHARLIE!

  131. dope Says:

no, Jamie, and I know you don’t either, but I wish people would think for a second before the post something as idiotic as what you did

  132. Phillies Suck Says:

Whose got a straw? It’s 1986 and there’s blow all over my lap. We just won the World Series!

  133. Fran Says:

Chase is right, Yeah its bad now but this team is not done. This is a legit team that we have to stick behind

  134. Phils Says:

i want the uncle charlie gone cause this team is to damn comfy and relax its time to get a ass whooping manager i dont care who but they need it but stupid wont go he has a 3 year extention.

  135. Fran Says:

Its not charlie, its the players. If you cant get yourself fired up for a playoff run then its your own fault

  136. Phils Says:

this team cant get up cause utley is not a leader, howards def not and stray roll isnt anymore and this team is to quiet. Rowand was that but they let him walk. The mets will run away with that unless the phillies figure it out soon. Charlie has to do something and the players arent really up tempo people outside victorino.

  137. Fran Says:

JC romero has to use all that fire he has a start talking

  138. Phils Says:

if this season falls apart like its going to it seems i think they should blow it up.

  139. mg52 Says:

Call Up Happ, not only is your identity a command to which the Phils should listen, but your reasoning is cogent. The Mets’ Manuel is getting it done; the Phils’, no. Jimy Williams has managed before with more than middling success for the most part and probably is a wiser baseball man. Charlie is a hitting coach by profession – and a good one at that. But manager? Gimme a break. Hasn’t he realized that this club is not the 1995 Cleveland Indians? He claims to have discussed situational hitting with the guys, but it is not enough. And this is where Geoff’s excellent comment comes into play: a MAJOR shakeup needs to be considered. Some players previously believed keepers might have to be traded. See The Man’s posts on other boards for more information. He and I have identified the Angels as a match for a blockbuster deal to go down.
Yeah, alright, okay: Lidge was no good tonight. He’s human; we can forgive him for this. But he should be coming into games in which his teammates have spotted him a lead or at least a tie. When an offense is this scant, someone like him feels that he must be perfect. The other pitchers tonight were lucky not to have cracked under such pressure. It is not just a transient slump in which this offense is mired, but a sustained malaise. The Mets cleaned house and we have witnessed the result. The Phils must return the favor before they pull the Nationals out of the cellar.

  140. J-Man Says:

FIRE CHARLIE MANUEL,FIRE CHARLIE MANUEL,FIRE CHARLIE MANUEL.

  141. Chase Utley Says:

Seriously, I love Aaron Rowand. I went out of my way to get tickets for his return as a Giant this year and I stood and cheered his first at bat but seriously, THERE WAS ONE TEAM, THAT WON’T CONTEND THE ENTIRE TIME HE IS ON THE TEAM, THAT WAS DUMB ENOUGH TO GIVE HIM THAT CONTRACT.

Until you pussies start supporting this team, hell or high water like Red Sox, Yanks, Cubs and fuck it, Mets, fans do they won’t justify the cash to sign ridiculous contracts like Rowand’s. The support of Philly baseball has been a joke. ECW had more interest in Hostile City.

Enough about “leadership”, none of you have ever played pro sports, this team just sucks for no other reason than that they suck. They’re all capable, they just stink. Look at the Mets, there has been no lineup change from April until now and they went from worst to first because they just started playing better.

If you faggots stopped becoming Eagles fans in August, there would be cash to sign gay contracts like Rowand’s. Support your team or live with the mediocre crud that we get.

  142. J-Man Says:

It’s sad how lost this team is now and i don’t think he can get this team back…If the Phils can’t win these next 2 games and take at least 2 games against the Nationals, they better send him packing.

  143. Phils Says:

i hate the eagles so i wont be doing that so thats not a issue to me but fire charlie please put jimy or anyone who is better and then get rid of some players in the off season.

  144. J-Man Says:

    Not an Eagles fan either.

  145. The Man Says:

“Gameday: Phillies (54-47) At Mets (54-47)”
This is where my trade posts are. If you are a supporter of the phillies trading their stars then see my entry

  146. Greg B Says:

Here is a request to change the Steve Jeltz award from Brad Lidge to “Everyone but Kyle Kendrick and Chad Durbin”

  147. Tyler Says:

This is sounding like the Mets blog website in early June.

Mets got that 2 game lead, baby!

  148. PhilliesSuck Says:

    What’s up with J-Blows?

  149. Dave Says:

Jimy Williams was the manager in 2005 of the astros and then got fired, then went on a tear to lose in the w.s.

Also the mets remind me of the 03 marlins for some crazy reason and i hate to admit that…..

  150. Chase Mutley Says:

In addition to agreeing with Geoff, you know it’s a bad day when you want to respond to PhilliesSuck with “I don’t know, what the fuck IS wrong with J-Blows?”

  151. Phils Says:

phillies need to make a differnce making change like manager or deal jblows or burrell or something to shake things up

  152. Vernon Dozier Says:

I don’t know how this can be blamed on the manager. This isn’t a team filled with young players – they’ve all been around for a while.

Philadelphia was a season-high 13 games over .500 and had a season-best four-game lead in the division after a 20-2 win at St. Louis on June 13. Since then, the Phillies are 13-21 and the offense has sputtered: They have scored two runs or fewer 13 times in those 34 games, including three shutouts.

  153. Braves fan Says:

It’s nice to go on someone else’s blog to see that all baseball fans are alike – we all trash our own teams and we all think our guys are the worst in the league.

Gotta tell ya, seeing Lidge lit up like that tonight gave me hope we’ll keep Tex, Ohman and others after all.

By the way, pretty lame booing the proposal of the two Braves fans tonight. Can’t say I’ve seen more class than that in a long time.

  154. PhilliesSuck Says:

The problem with the Phillies is they need Rollins bat bad. They need a lead off guy. I know you guys do not like reyes. But, he is a guy that starts this offense. Rollins was that guy last year and that’s why the Phillies were good. And why he was the MVP. This team is based on getting Rollins going because the rest of the lineup is mostly a homerun team. They need a consistant #1/2 in the top of that order so they can score runs!

  155. Chase Mutley Says:

As a married man, we did them a favor. ;)

You’re wise to get rid of Tex this year like we’re gonna be wise to get rid of Burrell this year. I think the Phils can still make the playoffs but I don’t think they’re winning it all so it makes sense to say peace to Burrell (and he’s my favorite player) like it make sense for the Braves to see Tex in pinstripes.

  156. PhilliesSuck Says:

The Mets sucked the first half and then they fired Willie. It was not the manager’s fault. It was because the team was not hitting in the top of that order. The Mets top of the batting order is now hitting so they are winning. Don;t be to quick to get rid of the manager. Get Rollins and the #2 hitter going.

  157. Chase Mutley Says:

PS, there is not a single baseball fan who doesn’t appreciate Jose Reyes’ talent, we just think he’s a woman, well, because he’s a woman. We all know he’s a great player and we wish J-Roll was playing up to his talent right now (JoRe was stinking up the joint in the beginning of the year). No one is selling Reyes short, he’s just annoying to watch play the game cuz he’s such a child.

  158. PhilliesSuck Says:

The Phillies need a Willie Tavarez type of player in the top of that order who plays CF and get on base, steal and score runs.

  159. PhilliesSuck Says:

Reyes is cocky. But he wasn’t the first half. Then he started getting cocky again and started producing. I know it can be annoying but, if he was on the Phillies and he was producing for the team and winning I really don’t think you would care.

  160. Chase Mutley Says:

Jimmy and Shane are those players. They just need to stop f’ing around. I’ll say it again, the talent is here, it just needs to execute.

Two MVPs in the top of the order, a front runner for this year’s MVP too, you’re not going to find that in FA. There are no prospects that are going to fill Chase, Jimmy, or Ryan’s shoes. Those jerks just have to step the F up.

  161. Chase Mutley Says:

I’ll be straight with you, I would care. If any Philly started acting like that jackass I would care. I hate when our football and basketball players do it. BUT I agree with you that most fans wouldn’t. No one cares when Jimmy and Shane act a fool. Reyes just does it better than most. Jimmy sat down when told to sit down. Reyes, untucked his jersey and nany-nany-poo-poo’d around the bases.

  162. RiVLez Says:

Who cares about cockiness. I could give a crap if anyone on any team does any kind of celebration. You ever see Joba Chamberlain after a strikeout, looks like he just won the World Series. I guess this stuff doesn’t bother me as it does some people.

  163. Chase Mutley Says:

The glaring omission in your statement RiVLez is is that Joba has never won anything. Acting a fool is bush league, it’s as simple as that and the only people who like Reyes are Mets fans (like A-Rod are Yankees fans, like Bradley are Rangers fans, like Manny are Boston fans, et al.)”

  164. Vernon Dozier Says:

There’s been something going on with Rollins all season. In one of the first series of the year, there was a game he helped win and then he declined to talk to the media afterwards. What was that all about? He doesn’t look like the same guy we saw put the team on his back last season. If there’s no spark at the top of the order, this team isn’t going anywhere.

  165. ryan Says:

you people are seriously the most ridiculous fans on earth. lighten up. we go through a bad stretch and you want to trade everyone. trade howard (games best power hitter) , trade utley (games best second basemen), trade rollins (reigning MVP). get a grip.

  166. that guy Says:

Remember when that one short bus rider posted that Reyes was a HOF. That was classic. That guy makes Jeff Stone sound like the chairman of MENSA.

  167. justin Says:

sure wish i had reyes on my team over rollins

  168. TJ Says:

Same old shit, different night. 5 days and counting until the moment of truth, the trade deadline. Who knows? We might be lucky to be 4 games out by then the way this fucking team is playing. I’m going extra early to tomorrow’s game and standing by the Phils dugout to tell them what I think.

  169. nate Says:

i guess if they’re gonna get beaten by the braves, it’s nice that i was my starting fantasy baseball catcher that hit two homers, with one of them being a grand slam, and not anybody else. I feel like the guy in the steve jeltz award picture, especially living in NY.

  170. J-Man Says:

Yea they need to just let Jimy Williams take over for the rest of the season and see what happens…The Phils last 2 wins were when he was in charge because Manuel was ejected in the Marlins game last friday and the Mets game on Tuesday…We haven’t won a game since before the All-Star break with Manuel in charge the entire game.

  171. Phil Says:

I’ve decided tonight that I’m becoming a Giants fan. I want to be a fan of a team that actually has heart and tries. The Giants might suck, but they have heart. They also have Aaron Rowand(one of my favorite Phillies ever), and Tim Lincecum, my current 3rd favorite pitcher(would be favorite if we didn’t have Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer.) The Phillies are a bunch of heartless, underachieving, hacks. Fuck them. You can hate me all you want for saying this, but this team is garbage. I liked them better in the Francona and Bowa eras when they at least tried to win. Now they’re just a bunch of overpaid primadonna’s.

  172. Craig Says:

A little hard Jeltz’ing Lidge? He’s had one bad game all year. The entire batting line up should be on permanent Jeltz rotation

  173. Jay Says:

I would care if Reyes was on our team and acting like that. I don’t like watching J-Rolls flip of the bat or the way Howard stares at the shots he makes. Utley does it the right way. He is around to second before the ball is out and keeps up a good pace all the way around the bases. As far as Elbow bumping and all that stuff, that is all good, but being a Hot Dog all the way around the bases just don’t cut it to me. Believe it or not.

  174. rob Says:

Honestly folks, how much of a woman do you have to be to be offended because a player who just achieved one of the most difficult feats in baseball…breaking a late tie in a soldout game at home against his team’s chief rivals…makes excited gestures as he runs around the bases?

None of which are directed towards his opponent.

Are any of you guys barefooted folk singers in your spare time?

  175. J Roll Says:

    We lost. Oh well.

I’m the team leader. Oh well.

  176. BeatWritersSuck Says:

HA! Last 2 comments were priceless

  177. Joshua Says:

    The phillies suck. Oh well.

  178. p feliz Says:

Anybody see my bat?dont know where I left it.

  179. barefoot folk singer Says:

we are still only 2 out…everybody quit crying and direct some energy toward backing the Phills…Kendrick was good last night,Howard hit one,and so what Lidge got tagged for the first time.the mets will not win every game from now on…its just baseball ,momentum goes in small cycles. We are due.

  180. Oh Well Says:

yeah but the Phils have been this way for over 2 months….the fans gots to be concerned

  181. barefoot folk singer Says:

Hey at least we have a chance ..I remember teams here that were so bad here there was no hope..the season would end in april…We have a good nucleus, yea, its not perfect we could use a really good starter, but who?I just hope it stays close into september.

  182. Tyler Says:

Reyes, is cocky, sure. But if you’re producing, I think anybody has the right to be cocky.

2 game lead! Lets Go Mets!

  183. Chase Mutley Says:

“Honestly folks, how much of a woman do you have to be to be offended because a player who just achieved one of the most difficult feats in baseball…breaking a late tie in a soldout game at home against his team’s chief rivals…makes excited gestures as he runs around the bases?”

I dunno, go on over to metsblog.com and read the entire thread about Shane Victorino.

  184. Bobby Cox Says:

Hey barefoot folk singer – I would say WE are due! Time to return the favor for sweeping us twice in Atlanta.

  185. phillies Says:

Philadelphia – what a fucking dump of a city…also New York’s bitch….nice to be looking at the Philadelphia scum in the rearview mirror.

  186. barefoot folk singer Says:

As i said have some faith…Hammels had trouble..but I had thoughts of turning off the radio when it was 9-3..and had thoughts of you negative a-holes at the time ..but I persevered ,kept listening and low & behold look what happened . ,Dobbs great..Howard all right.Lidge came through…Screw all of the naysayers,.(who are really met fans anyway).
