Gamenight: Cardinals (50-40) At Phillies (48-42)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, July 08, 2008 06:47 PM
After a damning series loss to the Mets, the Phillies begin a three-game series with the Cardinals at the Vault. Last time the Phils played Saint Louis they lost two of three. We only pray that’s not the case this time. The Phils have six games to go before the All-Star break, and they’re falling on their knees getting there.
JC Romero has a nagging injury; Rudy Seanez is having shoulder trouble. These aren’t good things. The Phils can use a break — moreover, tonight the Phils can use a sterling performance from their starter, Cole Hamels. Chances are he will deliver such a thing.
The Phils’ righties are hitting just .239 against right-handed pitchers. So tonight, of course, Jayson Werth, Pedro Feliz and Carlos Ruiz make up the back of the order.
To put it out there, Brett Myers will start Saturday for AA Reading (not making a road trip to Pawtucket), while Pat Burrell is still trailing Corey Hart and David Wright in Final Vote balloting. Come on people, VOTE BURRELL.
Phillies: Cole Hamels (9-5) 3.22 ERA
Cardinals: Joel Piniero (2-4) 4.52 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 86, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Werth/Feliz/Ruiz/Hamels

Your gamenight beer: Once I recommended Arrogant Bastard Ale. Tonight it’s Double Bastard, because this team needs a kick in the pants. They need a big series win against a good NL team. And they need it bad. Eat … something with this. I don’t know. Make something up.
Go Phillies!

Home

July 8th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
Cubs got Harden today. Have more about this later. Man, oh, man.
July 8th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
well hardens gone…funny traded for gallager who was a big piece of the deal who graduated 2 yrs b4 me from the same high school…looks like bedard is ours if were gonna do something..or maybe well trade for burnett and not require a physical
July 8th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
#@?*&! Feliz should have started yesterday, Dobbs tonight.
July 8th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
Wake up Gillick, damn.
July 8th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
(Sighs) Get Bedard.
July 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Bedard is poison. We’re f***ed.
Let’s keep our prospects, get some more playoff experience, and come back full on next season.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Harden would have been a bad move, the A’s haven’t exactly hid the fact is arm is falling off at this point in the year.
Bedard or Burnett… Will take one if the deals in our favour but have a feeling were going to be shaking our heads when this goes down.
Come on Cole!
July 8th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Bedard or bust. I didn’t want Harden anyway. Dude is made of glass, scares me.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Damn it Gillick. Thats BAD. Hardens injury prone but the Phillies didnt come close to scoring on him. I guess it is Bedard because even though hes a douche who might be hurt, he has the best stuff left on the open market.
If they think they can go get some middle of the road guy theyre not going anywhere this postseason.
Hey, GILLICK! your competition is moving fast and early to get the edge. Now its time for you to go get someone like, now! you canot wait until the deadline and itd better be good. I dont want adam eaton to pitch again for this team.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Oh, nice, Carlos “5-4-3″ Ruiz is up.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
My bad: Meant 6-4-3
July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
New nickname for Ruiz, “DP”
July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Ruiz is an offensive retard….he has no fucking clue at the plate.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Assume that Harden will stay healthy this year. YOu have to counter that, you have to counter Sabathia’s move. Top two talented pitchers go to potential/likely playoff rivals in the NL.
And will you fucking guys please drive runs in with risp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need another everyday hitter now too, sorry. I cant take these retards leaving runners on base. shitty teams leave lots of runners on base….you dont want them to be a shitty team do you?
July 8th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
There should be no issue now as to what to do with ruiz. He fucking blows. Get out. DFA. Bring up the kid Marson.
This team is self-destruvting and they need to IMPROVE their roster or else they will fail to make the playoffs because they will not get the wild card.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
You could see that DP coming last week
July 8th, 2008 at 7:42 pm
I go to my friends wedding in Pittsburgh on the 18th for a few days, and by the time I leave they better have traded for that starter so they can work on getting a reliever and a contact hitter for the rest of the two weeks
no excuses fo rthis shit anymore. you want to win? well the opposition just laid down the gauntlet. now its our turn
July 8th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
just release him…by dumb luck you can bat better then .200
July 8th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I’m lovin’ your passion Geoff.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
phillies need to go out an acquire a bat now to. I would like to see the phillies drop ruiz aka dp waiting to happen now and bring up marson or any other walking catcher who could hit more then .207.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
The A’s actually got a halfway decent haul. LaPorta is going to be the face of the Indians franchise for 10 years though. The A’s haul is more mlb-ready though. Beane has tons of starters to plug right in there though and have no drop off. hes such a good GM. That team will be in the playoffs next year if not this year.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
hey man, my dog can run pretty fast and catch tennis balls on the fly. If I can team him how to hit maybe he can replace geoff jenkins.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Geoff is right…you dont do anything before the trade deadline not only do you fuck yourself this season but you also fuck yourself in the off season…what quality player in their right mind wants to play for a team that shits the bed every year and does nothing about it. Im sick of it and as fans we deserve better than this.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
If Hamels gives up like 2 or 3 runs over 8 innings and we lose this game, I might not watch another game til after the All Star break. They can’t waste a great start when they get one, especially if they only come once or twice per rotation.
July 8th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
had to get that off me chest there
July 8th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
the sixers are making trades and the phillies are not how sickening is that
July 8th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Looks like the central up the game. I think the phils should stay away from bedard he is bad news, but yet again we look to be in a lose lose market now.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Sarge is explaining to everybody how he loves giving Pujols head….just take it out of your mouth while you talk Gary
July 8th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
very sickening being that ed snider couldnt care less bout the sixers and the flyers are making signings and doing what ever they can to get better. The phillies havent shown signs to do that ever.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:03 pm
we do more dishing out talent then getting any
July 8th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
What trade did the sixers make?
July 8th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
im tired of the phillies standing pat every year.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
gillick better be talking to GM’s like right now and theyd better come out tomorrow and annoucne tha tthey get a number 2 starter
July 8th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
sorry was not trade…free agency….elton brand and the sixers and trying to finalize a contract
July 8th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
i think maybe we should look at aaron harang.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Guys, just because two teams jumped on trades early in the month doesn’t mean we are standing pat. Nearly the entire month is left, those two teams just moved early and aggressive.
Honestly I would have taken CC, but I wouldn’t want to have given up everything for Harden. Bedard should be #1 on the radar and I think he always was. A 1-2 of Cole and Bedard would be great for us down the stretch. Makes the other 4-5 mediocre starters we have need to scrap to keep their place in the rotation / majors.
Gillick is a good GM and knows what he is doing. I honestly think he always knew we didn’t have enough for those two guys.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
4 Innings, O Runs - more of the same for the Phils.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
and the phillies should be up 5-1 but are losing because of LOB runners
July 8th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
i want a hitter
July 8th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Ruiz grounds into a DP, Feliz pops up the 1st pitch with 2 runners on. Some things never change eh. And i wouldn’t trade for Bedard, too much of an injury risk and dosn’t go deep enough into games. I’d move Myers to the pen because everyone already there is injured (gordon, seanez) or just not that good (romero, durbin). Then maybe i’d go after Maddux. But it isn’t really the pitching that sucks, it’s the hitting. Any trade involving Victorino is suicide, if anything i’d look to ADD offense in the way of a OF or C.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
maddux anit happeing cause he wont come here. i saw that this afternoon on DNL.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Durbin, not that good? What, did you watch one game all year - where he gave up the HR to Tatis? Don’t bother posting nonsense like that.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
maddux? are you serious? you have that type of guy in moyer, meaning an old man who cant go deep into a game too often. basically you have cole hamels and then 4 guys that are only good on average for 5-6 innings. that is and will KILL this bullpen. because of that wear, they already need another bullpen arm. now, to lessen that, you need a STUF starter who can go deep into the game. i really dont care if you have to trade victorino or not. hes a retard at the plate who lucks into a double once in a while. they need to trade for a centerfielder who doesnt swing at the first pitch. jenkins is worthless but i think were stuck with him for the rest of the year (groans).
there are guys out there for cheap who can help in center or in right. you still need a starter.
go for maddux as your big score? thats bullshit. thats the kind of attitude that we need the front office to shed in order to become a serious contender.
WTF?
July 8th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
wtf? JOEL PINIERO? that guy is a 4th or 5th starter and hes moqwing them down
July 8th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Im extra fired up tonight because i just hooked up my brand new LCD HDTV only to watch these douchebags pull the same old shit.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
yeh i think the phillies need to get a contact hitter to play 3rd, C or of choose 1 i almost have to say that might be a top prioty now.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
MLBTR has good breakdowns of each positions available players this years trade deadline
July 8th, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Well, 2 HR’s but both solo shots. Big inning here with Vic, Utley and Howard. I’m thinking we gotta score this inning.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Elton Brand is staying with the LAC. I’m a clippers fan, random, I know but I love medium market teams. Clippers, Phillies, and the Packers and NJDevils.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Getting a lefty could be scary. Hamels, Bedard, Moyer, Happ, Kendrick…4 lefties
July 8th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
this team in its current form is done. theyre not going anywhere. they need to boost the morale and shke it up and add to it. then people will pick it up and youll see some life again.
right now they look dead
July 8th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
the phillies are a large market team. phildelphia is a top 5 city in almost every population/media category.
the owners are cheap money grubbing highway crooks. thats why it appears they are medium market.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
I vote the Fred never posts here again after saying Romero and Durbin are not that good. Durbin and Romero are probably the best righty/lefty relief combo in all of baseball right now.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
I consider the Phils medium only because of the players and ownership like you said, thats they way I base marketing and teams or the Clippers would be a large market team.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
yeah i didnt agree with anything he said
also, if greg maddux is all they get, i guarantee with 100 percent certainty that they will fail to make the playoffs.
i used to think as they are they can win the division. the mets series proved to me that you cant guarantee that anymore. changes need to come to make that certain again
July 8th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
ok just makin sure. so you base it on behavior basically.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
we need to do something quick or we will be hitting the links in october watching a fish or dare i say the metz. This sucks and will not get better.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
behavior, activity in the offseason, population, national television coverage, ownership. Alot of things factor into a team’s market.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
We will get a pitcher guys, cool it. It’s probably going to be a guy “out of leftfield”, quotes are there to avoid the reversed Rick Ankiel joke.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
NEPA, Durbin isn’t that good because his career stats say so. He’s had one good half a season; i’d like a bit more of a track record than that in the set up role. He’s sucked for the most part of his MLB career
July 8th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Phillys got shitty behavior like boston and new york, we have a major city, large pop, tv deal with CSN AND CW and are on fox and espn(NESN JR), The phillies owners spend like they are in toronto with a semi large payroll in a big city with no will to win.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
theyve been talking for a while now about the starter. teams know whats available in the way of prospects and starters. theres no excuse not to pull the trigger now and focus on other improvements.
i will go so far as to say, even if they get that number 2 guy, its not enough to get through the NL anymore. its enough to get to the playoffs i think but not farther. they need to seriously load up if they want to do it this year.
or they could do the dreaded slow-played 3 year approach that don m and i argued about. the problem i have with that is those plans never work because the GM/owner always screw it up and keep sewtting the team back because shit happens.
im tire dof this shit. please bail me out here gillick and make some improvements
July 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
DONT YOU FUCKING DARE PINCH RUN FOR HIM!!!!! get this man over and get him in.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
exactly thom. total penny pinching skimming crooks
July 8th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
And Phil, i never said that Romero and Durbin haven’t been good this year. But they are due for a regression and adding Myers to the pen keeps it a strength. Standing pat in the pen is just waiting for it to become slowly worse.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Honestly i want the phillies to score some time in the next week.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
ESPN is really the only National Coverage you mentioned, every team has deals with a regional broadcast. We get on ESPN sometimes but never over a Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs, you know, large market teams. We’re on Fox like twice a year, aside from the playoffs last year. They spend, sure but on who? Geoff Jenkins? Our own guys that we’re resigning? Adam Eaton? Rarely will you see big names come to Philly. We build mainly from within.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
fred, he’s a relief pitcher right now, its all about what they’ve done lately. And lately, Durbin has been the best middle reliever in the game. and thank you to Geoff and Phil for seconding my opinion that fred’s comments were ridiculous.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Fred, stop posting. You said they aren’t good. You are dumb. You must be a Mets fan.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Holy lord. Goodnight Phils.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
I just got home- more of the same in this game huh guys? Does Coste come through?
July 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
This is just absurd. I can’t even watch these guys any more.
Let’s just forget about this game and concentrate on the fact that it looks like Elton Brand could be joining the Sixers tomorrow!
July 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
fuck me these twin killings are driving me nuts. The offense from the catcher position is just a joke atm
July 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
oh my god. thats, wow. this is INSANE! nobody is this bad. i mean, right now, theyre BAD. milt thompson has to go people need traded, blah. just blah. mad pissed off
July 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pm
And now Coste GIDP. I’m so sick of this unclutch hitting.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
This team needs a a player who hits for average and a starter.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
those tow guys, durbin and romero, arent even problems at all. romero needs the all star break badly because hes been overworked for his skill set. durbin is fine.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Who are we gonna get that hits for average? Brian Giles is on the trade block. Maybe you can platoon Werth and Giles?
July 8th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Mike W.,
Brand isn’t going to be a Sixer, sorry. Go Clippers and Movies in LA with my new boyfriend.
Sincerely,
Baron “The Baron” Davis
July 8th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
its pretty clear this team needs like 3 or 4 moves to be a legit contender.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
And i won’t stop posting, i’m a phillies fan and i’m simply voicing my opinion. Back to baseball, and thank god manuel took Hamels out at 100 pitches. He’s killing him with those 125 pitch counts
July 8th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
No more Sixers talk either. I understand Phillies fans and Sixers fans go hand and hand but there’s Sixers’ blogs out there. Use one of them.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
i dont want brand cause besides him we got nothing.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I hate the NBA and the NFL
July 8th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
You’re a really dumb Phillies fan.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I just looked up the play by play. 2nd and 3rd and nobody out and we get none in the second inning?
As Nathan Explosion would say: That’s totally brutal.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
i follow and am aware of those tow pro sports, but i cant stand th eway the leagues are run and the way the players act in those two leagues.
elton brand is old and injured. the sixers should go for josh smith. i dont even care about the nba and i know that.
i like MLB, NHL, college FB, european soccer, collge BB.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday that Brand has given the Sixers indications that he is poised to accept a five-year deal worth an estimated $82 million and spurn what was presumed to be a slam-dunk return to the Los Angeles Clippers to hook up with Clipper-to-be Baron Davis.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Can I open my eyes yet? Is the worst over?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
We’re about to get one of the classiest acts in sports and one of the best big men in the league. Exciting times for Sixers fans.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
im so frustrated with the phillies the stupid sixers look good right now and i dont think that would happen this season but it did and THIS FUCKIGN WHY I WANT COSTE STARTING AS MUCH AS HE CAN HE IS THE MAN
July 8th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
nice one coste. taking the hit, werth threw a good strke from RF
July 8th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
if coste gets hurt i give up on the season.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Yeah TJ. Awesome DP. Werth gunned down someone at home to save a sac fly. Coste got ran over though.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Duncan knee’d the hell out of Coste. Head’s up Duncan!
July 8th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Sorry good ol’ Phils! I woulda given you ol’ Harden for a package of Sizemore, Cliff Lee, and Brandon Phillips.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
kenny word
July 8th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
What part of the Phillies have a better record when Ruiz starts don’t people understand? Ruiz calls a WAY better game and makes our pitchers better.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
coste is the man…if asshole manual had him as a starter I would love to see what he would have done in the all star voting….flat out a ball player
July 8th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Hopefully Coste is alright, if hes not Werth’s finishing the game at catcher and Ruiz will start every game.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
now let’s go score some runs
July 8th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
The way this off season has gone I wouldn’t be surprised to see Brand go to the Sixers then Baron say no to the Clippers and return to Golden State.
But I’ll stick to my guns on this. Brand wont be a Sixer. Josh Smith will. That’s best case scenario for Sixer fans.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
LETS GO BOYS NOWS THE TIME DAMIT I WANT TO WIN
July 8th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Haha fred. Not gonna happen.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
no its because Ruiz catches for Hamels everygame and Coste was getting the short end of the stick pulling Myers almost every game…ruiz sucks my fucking balls
July 8th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
dude, anyone can call a good game. coste calls an ok game.
carlos ruiz was a .270 hitter last year (right?). thats ok and you can play him with that average.
this year, hes one of the worst hitters in the national league. hes killing rallies and producing nothing at all. i cant do that. you cant expect to win anything with that. thats garbage. your 8th hole hitter has to be able to get a base hit sometimes. he cant even do that this year.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
a professional catcher, i mean, is SUPPOSED to call a decent/good game
July 8th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
I’d prefer Elton Brand, but I’d be happy with either. Brand is supposed to be a great person and class act. Smith, well, we all know about that.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
I don’t think Coste starting everyday is the answer…that’s the point I’m trying to make.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
rollins, ruiz, feliz and geoff whiff jenkins are dissapointing so for this season.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Agreed Geoff. A few weeks back I was OK with the platoon of Ruiz/Coste because Ruiz had not completely shit the bed yet. Now, he’s simply unbearable and they’ve got to do something about him.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
I tend to agree because of his age and durability concerns. but ruiz isnt the guy he blows. either its marson or you better add that to the list of deadline needs and check out the catchers market.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
no of course it is not the answer but it is a piece to the puzzle….they need a lot more then that…
July 8th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
coste has hit well in his playing time, but if he played more regularly i think Manuel fears he’d drop off in production. But he might as well try it and find out instad of starting ‘GIDP’ Ruiz. And Rollins has been awful today at bat
July 8th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
thats 3,4,5 big holes now that have emerged here. very concerining
July 8th, 2008 at 9:09 pm
I don’t see Feliz as that much of a disappointment. I guess I didn’t have very high expectations for him.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
They mine as well try out Marson at this point…
July 8th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
if coste is hurt this is a real blow.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
I dont think the sixers should spend anything on a Free Agent really, wait until next year and the year after, let your young guys develop and sign some big names in the next two years.
Sorry about this NBA talk people that aren’t interested but i need a break from talking about Ruiz, how much we need a number 2 but wont get one, and our offensive struggles. The Phillies refuse to give us something good to talk about, christ atleast call up Marson.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
feliz is leave average or better for the 7th hole i think. cant complain at all about him. there are other major problems here. im ok with feliz because hes signed cheaply for his whole contract term here. by then a oyung 3b prospect like hewitt will be ready to come up. its this year next year plus a cheap option i think
July 8th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
I don’t even know why we’re still talking about this. The Cubs just secured themselves the NLCS today. They should just blow up the team after that.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
NEPA i agree…he has saved us at third and his production has been par, about what you expected to get. He does have to do better with swinging at first pitch off speed shit and pounding it in the ground, the pitchers are smarter then giving him his fastball
July 8th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
scratch that for now.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:11 pm
well they did openly say marson is untouchable when negotiating for sabathia. that could mean they think hes ready.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
ok im pissed
July 8th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Just to share some good news, the Mets are winning against Lincecum and the Giants. Oh… maybe calling that “good news” really depends on who you’re talking to. Naaah… I’m sure that makes everyone happy.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
ive calmed down enough to say the phillies should take their shot and load up as best they can (sans the untouchables, whoever they are) and say f it lets try it.
this team has driven me crazy the past few weeks. i thought they were a lock to win the division and win a round liek 2 months ago. then its well theyll still win the division.. by this point im not sure about that at all. very concerning
July 8th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Lets go metz
July 8th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Yeah, Amaro and Gillick both said Marson and Victorino are untouchable. Victorino shouldn’t be untouchable.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
and phil the cubs did not lock their fate…dont be stupid….harden is good when he is healthy…he has failed to stay healthy, now add in him having to swing a bat and play NL baseball, also you have soriano hurt all the time and outside of lee and ramierez what frontline players do they have in their staring line up….you never know what is going to happen the second half of the season. I would absolutely love to see the cubbies get over the hump but not over the phils
July 8th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Well said TJ. I don’t think you can find a add a better piece than Brand. If he signs, I think Iggy goes bye bye.. which I’m totally okay with after that postseason.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
mets will be 1.5 out baby see u guys after the asb to sweep u to go ahead and never look back.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
The thing is, the mets are winning that game how the Phillies use to, long balls. Lincecum has pitched well that game and wishes he has two pitches back. A Beltran three run shot in the first is a stinger and Delgado got a hold of one in the sixth. It also doesn’t help when your offense doesn’t provide your pitcher with run support, AHEM Phillies and Giants.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
What a play by Lidge!
July 8th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
I think the Phillies have to bring up Marson if Ruiz keeps struggling, right?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
yeah youd think so danny. youd think so. ive seen enough of ruiz.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Kenny…assuming Harden stays healthy I’d like to see anyone beat this rotation in the post season
Harden
Zambrano
Dempster
Lilly
Let’s get real.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
Mets fans crawling out of the corners of the internet!
July 8th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Big NY sucks, and so do the mets. they’ll start slumping again soon, just like before…
July 8th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
4 blown saves for franklin. he was a bum when he was here.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
I am excited for Ruiz’s avg to go under .200. It’s like, at that point, you can’t deny you need to make a change, or at least bat the pitcher 8th.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
remember dempster has been a bullpenner for a long time he has not pitched this much in a long time, and lilly are you fucking serious
July 8th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
3,4,5 in the order are up. Please score some runs, this is embarrasing.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
Franklin couldn’t pitch a scoreless inning vs. a little league team when he was in philly. we need to step up and try to steal a game here.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
lilly is total, complete overrated garbage.
but harden zambrano dempster is pretty good.
im a believer in zambrano and dempster being a bit overhyped but harden is harden.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
this game is making me sick
July 8th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Phils got some problems schedule wise now, unless they start playing the baseball they played the first 2 1/2 months. schedule isn’t kind going forward.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
i we suck thats y were winning and ur not
July 8th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Thank you danny, and if Iggy leaves when Brand comes then boom what do you have, the Clippers of like 06 all over again ( without Tim Thomas ), a team that is too young around a guy that cant do it all.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Lilly as the 4th man…he’s not totally terrible. Remember he’ll be going up against someone else’s #4.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
HOWARD TRIED TO BUNT!!! hahaha
July 8th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
5-0 ny mets winning. beltran has 4 rbis tonite. But also, you gotta give credit to pelfrey who put up goose eggs for 7 innings.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
its official…they are doing drugs in the locker room what the hell is howard doing?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
oh my god. did howard really just try and pull a bunt down the first base line? This is rock bottom - officially.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
haha howard tried to bunt thta was classic. at least he got on base
July 8th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
that looked like howard has never squared to bunt in his life. Good entertainment. And he singles !
July 8th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
joshua u know u like it
July 8th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
LOL NEPA
July 8th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Howard should learn how to bunt down the 3rd base line to beat the shift sometimes to get a rally going.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
i want to see burrel uncork on this idiot
July 8th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
ok jayson. its your turn to be the man. again.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Yyes taek that you philadelphia loosers, gaming games on you gusy liek its spetmber whne yuo did it to us
July 8th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
footsteps can u hear them philles fans
July 8th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
After tonight, 71 games left, but most against teams with winning or 500 records. Here are the dregs that Phils have NO MORE GAMES AGAINST: Cincinnati, Houston, Colorado, San Francisco. Only 3 more games each against Pittsburgh and San Diego. Yes, we have 12 games against the Nationals, but added to the Pittsburgh and San Diego games, that’s 18 out of 71 = 25%.
Phils have 9 more games against Atlanta, but who’s expecting 9-0? I don’t think so.
The rest: more mets, marlins, st louis, milwaukee, cubs. The wild card? 8 games against the Dodgers.
Doesn’t seem favorable. Any thoughts??
July 8th, 2008 at 9:26 pm
i guess when your a mets fan your IQ goes down…way to spell moron
July 8th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
They’re going to lose. I am so sick of this team. I’m becoming a Rays fan. I choose the Rays because I am a fan of underdogs and could never bring myself to like the Red Sox, Yankees, or Cubs. btw I’m not really becoming a Rays fan. I am just fucking sick of this team. They can’t hit a fucking beach ball.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:27 pm
I’ll break my own rule just to say - AnotherMetsFan, thats borderline non-english.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Love the way “AnotherMetsfan Says” spells…welcome to NYC, capital of mental retards and idiots of the universe.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
6-0 mets
July 8th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
they couldn’t hit a planet
July 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
phillies loose 1.5 mets out baby you guys are doomed if hamels cant win
July 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I think it might be time to realize that our team isn’t good.
We have one good starts, a closer, and 3 streaky homerun hitters. A crappy catcher, and 2 terrible starters.
We might be lucky to finish .500, right?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
the phillies have a tough schedule. gillick has to get up off his fat lazy ass and go something. like ASAP. hes the laziest GM ever.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I might need to take a little hiatus from this team for a while.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
yup
July 8th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
how about this ‘big ny’… get a life. Have you no freinds to celebrate the mets leading with ?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
If it weren’t for the Braves, imagine this recent run of games..
July 8th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
i sick of them worshipping ankiel. he was in the mitchell report for HGH and steroids
July 8th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Can’t expect a Mets fan to score “lose” correctly
July 8th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
no im watchin on SNY HD at my house with my fam
July 8th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
AnotherMetsfan Says: “Yyes taek that you philadelphia loosers, gaming games on you gusy liek its spetmber whne yuo did it to us”
wtf???
Was any of that English??? We might both be Mets fans but if you’re gonna post stuff like that, can you use a name not so close to my own?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
i’m dying here. i’m supposed to go to Thursday’s game, and I don’t even want to anymore…
July 8th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
The braves are a mess. Francour is pissed with the managment and they just signed julian tavarez ! It could be worse guys…
July 8th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
we got brand
and fuck mets
July 8th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Met fans dont you have a website? Even though it may be hard to read because you are all mentally retarded, proven by your comments and spelling attepts, we would be gratefull if you stay the fuck out of ours.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Whilst on the computer ‘big ny’… not very sociable is it ? Now fuck off you twat, no one likes you here, your own family don’t even like you. Why else would you be on here instead of talking to them ? Retard
July 8th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
I’d like it if we won a game this week! Seeing as Hamels got no run support, I’m not so sure that will happen!
July 8th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
I’m with you Geoff, I can’t stand the praise ankiel gets
July 8th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Are you sure, Philadelphia isn’t the toilet? Because you guys are taking a big shit in Citizens Bank Park.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
ANKEIL IS SO GOOD he beat u today didnt he
July 8th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
LIKE I LIKE TO DO AT CBP LETS GO METS LETS GO METS
July 8th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Here’s the problem with CBP. Its almost impossible to win consistently in a ball park like that…why do you think so many phillies have inflated hr totals..if they played half their games in shea/SF/SD they wouldnt have close to those hr totals.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
CBP is a joke like the team playing in it.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Another HR for NY, 7-0 bottom of the 9th no outs.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
8th not 9th*
July 8th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
mets fans: LETS GO METS
July 8th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Joshua, Why would it be the bottom of the 9th when they’re at home winning? Riddle me that.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
CBP is a problem when the GM/owners/everyone think you can put some washed up cheap guys in there and ASSUME theyll hit 30 hr 80rbi. if you suck you still cant hit no matter what ballpark youre in
July 8th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
bot 8 it is and we are in full control
July 8th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
this is like bigtime shock needed. someone popular in the clubhouse but underachieving (victorino) needs to be traded
July 8th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
What the hell, who started the Mets rally cry? What the fuck is this? Let me guess. The Yankees fans kicked you guys out of the New York Chats?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
well give u heilshit for him and the gulf logo hanging off the leftfield upperdeck near harry the K’s
July 8th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Another mets fan, read above your comment! it was a typo.
Geoff, but CBP produces ALOT of cheap homeruns
July 8th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Joshua, I think the only Phillie who strongly benefits from CBP is Pat the Bat. The short porch in left aids his pull swing and gives him the odd cheapy. Everyone else benfits for sure, but most of the power hitters in the team are lefties, and the dimensions favour right handed hitters and thus players such as Coste and Feliz, theoretically, should reap the rewards more. Unfotunatley visiting teams seem to be able to use the park to their advantage far more than we do lately
July 8th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Well, Mets have a more favorable schedule the rest of the way. 72 games left, 33 of which are against NL dregs San Fran (2), Colorado (3), Cincy (4), Houston (7), San Diego (3), Pittsburgh (5), and Washington (9). that’s 36%.
Only 3 more against St. Louis, 3 against Milwaukee, and 4 against the Cubs (11%). 9 against the Marlins and 8 more against the Phils.
Conclusion: When the Mets choke and fail to win the division, and/or fail to reach the playoffs, ALL THE NEW YORK IDIOT FANS WILL RECOGNIZE WHAT A FRAUD THEY REALLY ARE…MINAYA, WILPONS, ALL OF THEM!
And remember NY’ers: You guys will always be second place in town to the Yankees! Go Yanks - Fuck Mets.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
want me to bring more mets fans to ur little blog happy place i can get NYY fans to chime in
July 8th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
well. the phillies looked like the worst team in all of baseball tonight. i seriously thing an american legion team coulda went in there and beat them tonight. they were beyond awful. so predictable too. there is absolutely nobody on this team that knows how to hit for the situation. how predictable was it that Ruiz was gonna hit into that DP? i called it the second he stepped to the plate. i also knew that with runners on second and third in the first wouldn’t cross the plate. it’s just so predictable and pathetic at this point. they were absolutely shameful tonight and i really hope charlie is chewing them apart right now in the clubhouse.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Man Gillick that offense is good. They’re soo consistant too. We deff don’t need another bat, just pitching which you refuse to give prospects up for. We’re on the right track. Does a slump really last over a month or is that just a sign of overated hitting.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Fred, ok if the mets choke the rest of the way, they will look like idots..the problem is, with the schedule tehy have the rest of the way, i don’t think that is possible.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
the phillies sched is harder then the mets and i think the mets will be in control sooner rather then later. VOTE DAVID WRIGHT
July 8th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
yes, a reporter actually asked if they were going to get another everyday hitter too. haha
July 8th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
fellow New yorkers, is anyone as excited as i am to listen to mike and the mad dog tomorrow and hear chris russo B**ch about tim linsecum and how the mets beat him?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Here’s what I would do if I were Gillick tonight, walk straight into that locker room, tell Ruiz to pack his fucking bags with a straight face in front of the whole team so its effective then tell Charlie to sit JRoll, it seemed to work last time.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
o yea
July 8th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Put it in the books… Mets win!
July 8th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
good call TJ. that shit works sometimes. you cant overuse it but tonight is a prime time to do it.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
The Phillies are 13-1 in their games against the Braves & Rockies this season, and 35-42 in all their other games. Maybe they should consider being sellers at the trade deadline. This mix of players isn’t working.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
1.5 back and the footsteps grow louder and louder and closer and closer and now the race is on and i think the CBP is not a good home field adv for the phills
July 8th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
its mean, but this is their job. you have to take your job seriously, whatever it is.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
There is absolutely no need to talk trash in July. I don’t even bother going on NY posts. Now come September theres no doubt i will, and althought i’ll hate it i won’t mind Mets fans ragging on us then. But until September don’t talk trash its just pointless. Its basbeall theres way too many games to be played and way too many more bumps for both teams.
July 8th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Pelf is 5 for 5 so far possible 15 game winner?
July 8th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
CBP is an advantage if you have good pitchers. liek awesome pitchers. im talking hamels number 2 kendrick 4 sinkerballer 5 sinkerballer
July 8th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
yes those others are guys they dont yet have. but hamels 2 moyer kendrick happ is better than having eaton and myers in there
July 8th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
but moyer has to retire at the end of this year. your 3rd guy has to be a little bit of a stud too. im talking like 14-16 wins
July 8th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
TJ. I agree with you. Ruiz is flat out terrible. He has a gun for an arm but when pitchers have a better batting avg then you your not worth it. And when is jroll going to learn he’s not a homerun hitter and stop flying out. I’d sit him. He’s your leadoff man, he’s supposed to get on base right? He swings at the first 2 pitches everytime. I don’t remember the last time he drew a walk.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
he needs the all star break more than anyone, jroll i mean. he has actually legitimately become willy mays hays in major league 2 when he thinks hes a power hitter at the beginning of the season. he was a SICK leadoff hitter last year. now hes performing like a 7th hitter and so is shane. werth is the only leadoff hitter acting like it out there. this lineup is so f’d up without aaron rowand and all of these guys hititn gin a funk
July 8th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
We need Dejesus, Freel, or Taveras. They will do more for our team then a starter that shows up once every five days.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
i think its both though. marson called up, starter, reliever, outfielder.
i see 4 huge holes here that will kill this team and prevent them from making the playoffs if not addressed
July 8th, 2008 at 10:06 pm
ill go taveras, bedard or burnett or shock creative move as good as those guys, fuentes, marson replacing ruiz
July 8th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
I say go trade howard away for prospects to an AL team. Then trade those prospects plus some of your own for Matt Holliday and and a pitcher. Then instead of .215 hitter batting cleanup you have a .320 hitter there and you gain a pitcher. Hey i’d give up howard for that.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Marson would be huge for this club, a starter we need and a reliever would be nice. I’m starting to gain faith in Myers because this team can’t go much lower than it is now.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
too complicated to do in two weeks
July 8th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
myers has to be traded along with victorino and prospects if you want a hitter a starter and a reliever. eaton and ruiz have no value. those guys plus prospects in 3 seperate deals will get you what you need
July 8th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
There’s no deal that is too complicated. Thats why your paying the front office the big bucks. How do 3 and 4 team deals happen a day before the deadline. Its not too late untill 12:00 that night.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
sure. too complicated for gillick. hes a lazy bum. not for billy beane
July 8th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
So much for wishful thinking Geoff. But Gillick would definitely not trade Howard in the middle of this season.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
the last thing this team can afford to lose is Victorino. Rowand was the motivator last year this year its evident to see its Victorino. He’s the one thats putting the shaving cream in the guys face’s when they win and he’s the one pumping his fists when he throws out the game tying run in Atlanta and hitting the game winner against the mets. They can’t afford to lose him. They’ll have a bunch of people who just don’t care
July 8th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
PANIC!
July 8th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
i hope they do something too, dont get me wrong. i guess youre right about vic but they have to be very creative. they need an absolute stud for the rotation. sheets and sabathia is an AWESOME one two punch. the cubs counter with Zambrano Harden Dempster.
now what do we have? they need to get a serious motherfucker in there. burnett bedard somone MAD good.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
We have to trade him if we want anything we need back. Give us Taveras, P spect and Aaron Cook for Victorino, I’d take it.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Hey maybe get Randy Wolfe back. And we can also bat him 4th and he can play outfield on his off days. Maybe that will spark the offense. Our picthers will then officially be batting better than Ruiz.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Although there are some dumb met fans posting, Adam C, don’t you realize that NY is the center of the world? Didn’t the state relinquish control of Philly’s public schools to a private company? I wouldn’t be calling New Yorkers “idiots,” it is really no contest between the two cities
July 8th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
1.5 GB Thanks GLHF……..Only a few weeks ago all I saw on here was shit talking that the Mets are completely done, they don’t have a chance and that the phillies will win the division. It’s only July and no way the phillies joke of a pitching staff will hold up to win the division. And to the guy above that said to trade Howard you are on crack. Guy has 24 HR and 78 RBI and he hits over .300 with RISP. He’s a huge part of their offense. I think the phillies would suffer terribly. And who’s this guy he’s going to magically bat .320 in place of Howard?
July 8th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
no. anybody who’s been to CBP when the mets are in town knows that “idiots” is way too generous a word for those pathetic , ugly, fat, greasy mother fuckers that route for the mets. they are below human. and did i mention ugly? goddamn they are tough to look at.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Matt Holliday dip shit read the post. Do you watch the games. Do you realize he literally strikes out more than he gets a hit. Holliday has much better numbers. He may hit .300 w/ runners in scoring position but he hits .115 w/ no runners on. Woah watch out thats threatening. Plus you can never count on him against a left hander. He’s terrible. Pops one once every 3 games and people think he’s doing great. When is he breaking out of this slump that he’s been in since April.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Dear Big NY: what part of central Jersey are you from? I think I know you. Dear Geoff: Why do you take every opportunity to bash the NFL? There are a lot of scumbags in the league but at least they all play for the Cowboys now and they were morally bankrupt to begin with. Its still a great game. Dear Everybody: for the last time, Myers and Eaton have ZERO trade value right now
July 8th, 2008 at 10:42 pm
I bash the NFL because one of their players gets arrested every day. They are all on HGH and theyve ordered hits on roid dealers to cover up the extent of the problem. half the teams cheat and every 5 minutes a player wants a new contract when they all are grossly overpaid like all pro athletes. THe owners charge 20-150000 for personal seat licenses and fleece the public more than ANY other sport does in taxpayer funded stadiums.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
What a great night, the E Brand show is coming to town. Let’s consider this night awesome despite the Phils crap, it’s the only way to not get too frustrated.
Sixers will re-sign iggy, unless they can move him in a sign-and-trade for a shooting guard with better shooting ability. this is gonna be a very very nice team this year.
July 8th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
At least you can fire a guy for not doing his job in the NFL
July 8th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
its completely morally and ethically bankrupt. baseball recognized their problem.
the nfl covers up its problem and has murdered people to cover it up.
