Gamenight: Mets (42-44) At Phillies (48-39)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, July 05, 2008 05:48 PM

John Maine, 4-0 lifetime against the Phillies, will try to stop the good guys’ four-game winning streak tonight when the rivals clash at Citizens Bank Park. The Phils bring Jamie Moyer to the hill. In two starts against the Mets this season, Moyer is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA.

Last night the Phils got to Johan Santana, then pulled off the walk-off with a Shane Victorino single. JA Happ pitched well enough to get to the bullpen, which was dominant in keeping the Mets from doing anything at all. A total win. Pedro Feliz is a hidden hero from yesterday’s game, striking a two-out double and scoring on Vic’s single. He’s hitting .500 (6-for-12) in his last three games.

It’ll be hot at the park tonight (you know, I’ll be there), though the weather is luke warm and rain is expected.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (7-6) 4.13 ERA
Mets: John Maine (8-6) 3.86 ERA

Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 77, possible storms
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Ruiz/Moyer

Your gamenight beer: From Bourbon Brown to Black Bavarian. This black ale is satisfyingly nutty and filled with strong aromas, though it’s not necessarily heavy. It’s the perfect kind of beer to drink during a Moyer start — a little more aged, a little more complex, a little easy on the pallet. A good drink for your post-Fourth hangover. Have some grilled steak with it. Ya know, leftovers.

Go Phillies!

  1. Joshua Says:

John maine never loses to the phillies

  2. Phil Says:

He has some no decisions against the Phillies. We faced him last season during our 8 in a row win streak against them last season.

  3. Phil Says:

Tim I got UFO last night. It was really good, but it reminded me more of a wine cooler than a beer. It’s a GREAT summer beer, but it’s toooooooooo refreshing and fruity and less beer like. The thing I like about Purple Haze is that it’s a wheat beer with a hint of raspberry flavor, unlike UFO which was a raspberry wine cooler with a hint of wheat beer. Catch my drift? I’m not knocking it, I know it seems that way, it’s really tasty, just not beer like enough. Know what I’m saying?

  4. Geoff Says:

The one complaint I had about UFO, which i also had yesterday, was that it tasted too american. in otherwords, it wasnt strong enough despite it being a light beer. the balance wasnt quite there. still, quite tasty

  5. Phil Says:

    Yeah, it was too crispy.

Fuck Ryan Howard’s D. Does he try to lose games for us with his D? Does he do that on purpose?

  6. Geoff Says:

all of a sudden you look up and he has 76 rbi and 23 hr.

  7. Geoff Says:

he was having a bad year until a few weeks ago when the rbis started flowing fast. if his batting average was better hed be an mvp candidate again

  8. Geoff Says:

im totallyt serious about this: i really just cant deal with jenkins anymore. i just cant do it. like, get off our team. get out. please, someone, eh, like the pirates, please take this guy off out hands for like a TERRIBLE prospect. or just some cash considerations, like 1 dollar

  9. Joshua Says:

This umpire is disgraceful, he called 2 non strikes to church. then calls a strike a ball to moyer.

  10. Geoff Says:

i also cant deal with wheeler anymore. please. just let the sarge do the majority of the innings. he works well with tom mccarthy so let them both get innings 3-7 or let the sarge do 1-2 and 7-9. wheeler is just unbearable sometimes. the sarge knows more baseball too i think and can explain things to the audience better than wheeler.

  11. Geoff Says:

if maine is injured too the mets are so done. maine is one of the 3 mets that i do not completely hate (santana, wright, maine) and without him the phillies gain an extra edge over an already struggling mets squad

  12. Joshua Says:

it can’t be anything tooooo serious, cause hes still in the dugout watching the game. If it was serious he would leave for the clubhouse w/ the trainer

  13. Joshua Says:

thats got to be tough on both parts:

    1) having to come into the game and pitch against a hitter half way into an at bat and
    2) having to bat against a completely new pitcher half way into an at bat

  14. danny Says:

A cramp in the left forearm? Jesus, what a lame departure.

    Good for us!

  15. danny Says:

Come on Jamie, 2 more outs… hang in there

  16. danny Says:

Can’t we bring in Madson to pitch to Reyes? Please?

  17. danny Says:

Oh, there we go. Only a double.

Good idea Charlie. Maybe Moyer can get a complete game!

  18. Joshua Says:

madson pitching to wright w/ bases loaded.

  19. Geoff Says:

anyone notice harry misjudges balls a lot lately? every long fly ball is called like a homerun.

please dont put so taguchi out there to replace burrell even though bruntlett is running for him.

it will cost us if they allow so taguchi to field a fly ball or touch a bat or step on the field.

  20. danny Says:

    Yes Werth! No Werth!

  21. danny Says:

Werth was safe and a half

  22. danny Says:

    ****

  23. Joshua Says:

ever notice that the phillie fanatic and charlie manuel walk exactly the same? come to think of it, they have the same physique….hmmm, maybe the fanatic is realllly charlie

  24. danny Says:

    Hahaha

  25. danny Says:

Why do I we have to live and die by Gordon all the time??

  26. Phil Says:

    I hate Gordon.

  27. Joshua Says:

As the old cliche goes…”it takes 25 to win”

  28. Joshua Says:

^ and the mets showed us thats true.

  29. Keith Says:

    can hamels pinch hit instead?

  30. danny Says:

RUIZ TIME!Y You guys ready for a 3 run homer or what?

  31. thom Says:

i hate gordon and utley is not clutch

  32. Frank Says:

I know Gordon isn’t terrible. There are many worse relief pitchers in MLB.

But I can’t wait for the day his contract is up. I just can’t stand him anymore.

  33. chris m Says:

thats y u dont pull burell

  34. scot Says:

Gordon shouldn’t even have been in the game. The only reason Gordon was on the mound is cause Romero didn’t get the job done.

  35. danny Says:

Hopefully Wagner walks a couple in the ninth cause he’ll be pumped up

  36. scot Says:

can’t expect to win a game anyways when you only have 4 hits. awful.

  37. Keith Says:

yea but burrell would never have scored the go ahead run

  38. Joshua Says:

You can’t blame Gordon, Romero didnt get it done, he’s pitcher of record so far

  39. danny Says:

Okay, Seanez got him right where he wants him, and now you take him out?

  40. Phil Says:

    Sucks Durbin wasn’t rested. :(

  41. Joshua Says:

what kinda bull is this? its the freaking 9th inning…no need to delay the game. Just finish the inning and end it now

  42. Mr Met Says:

Phillies blow. Rain delay? yeah, that will win you a game.

  43. thom Says:

Buster onley says if the brewers dont part ways with there top 4 prospects the phillies are second in that chase for cc sabathia and it will cost the phillies carrasco, outman and some other lower level guy.

  44. Gavin Says:

Buster Olney is saying that the Phils and Brewers are the leading candidates fro CC. Brewers have MLB ready talent. Phils have alot of talent in A ball.

  45. Gavin Says:

    Good timing thom

  46. Phil Says:

I don’t want to give up Carrasco for a rent-a-pitcher…

  47. Don M Says:

Gordon sucks dick…that belt-high “fast”ball to Schneider was a joke.. I’m pretty sure I could’ve hit that too.

I don’t think its worth your top pitching prospects for the 2-month rental that is CC Sabathia… the Indians said before they didn’t want to give anyone a 72-hour window or anything to get a deal done, and I really don’t see the Phillies outbidding, say the Yankees, who are in need of Starting pitching next year

  48. thom Says:

Looking the brewers it would most likely be a rent a player situation and being a small market team i think they might heistate and that would let the phillies in. The top to guys of the brewcrew are good and they tribe want them but they only want to give up 1.

  49. Mr Met Says:

    2 more baby

  50. Mr Met Says:

    sweeeeeet!

  51. Don M Says:

Rain is the worst… drinking beers inside instead of on the deck for the 4th of July is just not that fun… its freakin nasty out right now too.

Happy belated 4th of July of everyone… hope you all had a beer or two and thought about how great this country still is… where you can sit around and bash NY Muts fans and whatnot

  52. Gavin Says:

anyone absolutely amazed that RH has 76 Rbi’s and leads the NL. Proof that numbers do lie.

  53. Mr Met Says:

Yeah, the 4th is good. have fun everybody.

  54. Don M Says:

So that mlbtraderumors thing said that the Phillies best prospects are in the low-minors… does that mean Cardanes, Drabek, Savery, Darby Myers, Quintinn Berry, etc…

If we can hang on to Carrasco, Marson, Golson then the rental aspect isn’t so bad.. but since those guys are close to the minors, it would really hurt if you trade for Sabathia and it doesn’t help you sign him next year

  55. NC Jason Says:

I do not know who I am more pissed at Romero/Gordon or the selfish ABs by JRoll tonight - hitting the ball in the air and being totally unproductive - even Willie Mayes Hayes was told to hit the ball on the ground. What is up with him lately??!?! I am tired of him trying to be a hero every AB. A lot of times this year Vic. has had to be the lead-off hitter after JRoll has swung at the first pitch tonight Vic bunts the ball and gets a hit - when was the last time JRoll did that?!?

    Shitty game tonight… shitty

  56. Don M Says:

MLBTR says that the Rockies are shopping Willy Taveras, tell me that he wouldn’t be an awesome fit into this Phillies roster.

  57. thom Says:

    he might be

  58. Geoff Says:

hed help. wonder what they want.

just heard brewers backing out of sabathia deal because they want another elite prospect in addition to laporta. thats arrogant as hell.

the phillies offered carrasco golson cardenas. thats too much in my opinion. however those two picks would be nice if they fail to sign him. i think that the rotation would be lefty heavy though. hamels sabathia moyer kendrick happ. f adam eaton, garbage.

maybe they have to do it. im keeping happ though because i liek his stuff and they can work on his control.

  59. Geoff Says:

oh and tom gordon is done.

  60. thom Says:

geoff who said the brewers are backing down?

  61. Geoff Says:

    olney

  62. thom Says:

nice thats a good thing cause the dodgers wont do it cause they like to build from with in and the rays need a outfielder more so the phillies need to act quickly.

  63. Greg V Says:

This is one of those games that makes me sick. For one thing, don’t pull Pat the Mets Killer out of the game when it’s tied. Two, I don’t care if Romero is getting banged around, I’d leave him in there before I went to Gordon. I’d have put Condrey or Seanez in before him.

A bad bad bad bad game over all. Nothing worse than when they get your hopes up and then take you right back down lower than before. Plus, I had a fucking Mets fan at the bar tonight, who I promptly cut off after the fatal two run double!

  64. Bruce Says:

Hey, remember… this is a four game series. To have Happ and Moyers going against Santana and Maine in the first two games and the Phillies still managed a win is not all bad. One more win for the Phillies in this series and Mets will not have gain any ground. To add another positive perspective, the Mets will have four fewer games left in their season to catch the Phillies. :-)

In addition, the Phillies still retain their 3.5 game lead over 2nd place Florida who lost tonight to Colorado.

I guess the law of averages finally caught up with the Phillies’ bullpen tonight. After another supreme performance by the bullpen last night (4 and 1/3rd scoreless inns lowering their ERA to a ridiculous 2.62), Romero, Gordon and Seanez were ineffective in tonight’s game. I know they and the rest of the team will forget about this game and prepare for Sunday’s game.

    Go Phillies!

Oh, before I go, here’s an oddity:

    NL West: 1st) Arizona 43-45 .489 pct; 2nd) LA Dodgers 42-44* .488
*result of tonight’s game not included

    Incredible!

  65. Fran Says:

I was down there tonight and when Gordon came out my section was like WTF is going on?????

    Side note:

#1 I hate mets fans with a passion even more then i did before

#2 That was the stupidest rain delay ever tonight

  66. Amanda Says:

i know i was at the game tonite too and i was around a bunch of mets fans i wanted to kill myself!

  67. Big C Says:

    Well, Phillies Phans,

What have we learned? We have learned that we can’t hit 1st teir pitching. That our bullpen is not as deep as we had hoped. ” Hey Chuck, why can’t Madsen et al go more than 6 pitches?” We are screwed. Any of y’all think we can win the WS? Seriously? We have 1 starter !. And that is all. We have a great pen…. how long can that hold up? Next year we lose another 5 hole hitting OFer? Like Rowand… now Burrell. We’re a contender? HA! Nope. Another pathetic entrance into the HOMERUN DERBY brought to you by the Montgomery Administration. SPIT.

  68. Big C Says:

    Bring on the AL!

  69. Amanda Says:

how is our bullpen not as deep as we hoped because they blew one game? did u think they were never going to in 162 games? Our starting pitching while it can improve greatly by adding another starter hasn’t been a huge issue this year, if u think about it the games we’ve been losing has been because of our offense not coming through, dont jump to conclusions after one game

  70. Amanda Says:

and before people start yelling i do wanna make it clear that we do need some more pitching, but this year they havent shelled us in many games, moyer has been consistent giving up 2 or 3 runs a game, kyle kendrick the same, adam eaton has been doing alot better than last year, the only big problem has been brett myers & hopefully we can find someone to take his spot

  71. Big C Says:

    Amanda,

Are you saying our pitching staff is good to go for post season play? Uncle Chuck will be glad to hear yer on board. I repeat… We do not have a post season pitching staff…… You got a problem with the truth, kid? And we can’t hit A Level pitching…

  72. Geoff Says:

im just going to cave in and say F it. get sabathia. cardenas golson carrasco is too steep though. really cant afford to lose golson. replace him with one or two lesser prospects. this is the same issue the brewers are backing out over, cleveland wants too much. you put your foot down and make your offer and if they push it then you tell them to go to hell. but hey if we do get him and he walks, well get two first round picks on top of our own if sabathia bolts. the new GM has to make smart free agent decisions to bolster the outfield in the offseason. im sick of this middle of the road purgatory approach.

yes thats a flip flop. we have to give them middle infielders because thats what they want. we can add donald and cardenas and maybe theyll be happy with lesser guys because those tow guys fill a need. just grow some balls and pony it up and lets make a run at it. those two picks form sabathia and burrell if he walks will balance it out. theyll get primo prospects ready to come up soon if they dont F up the draft picks.

im tired of this patchwork ass team. get some dominators in here

  73. Geoff Says:

ive been wavering about the merits and risks of sabathia all season

  74. Big C Says:

    geoff,

We cant get CC without losing Vic… And Vis is our man in the OF. Its a MoFo.

  75. Geoff Says:

yeah you have to put your foot down. i dont necessarily like vic a lot but they have no outfield depth at all. you cant send the 4th and 5th guys out there anymore. too dangerous. if they ask for him you tell them to take a hike. thats the same reason why you cant put golson in the deal either. no outfield depth.

cleveland asked for too much from milwaukee and they are balking at their demands. preparing to go after a different guy.

  76. Geoff Says:

id offer cardenas, bastardo, two lesser prospects and then go no farther.

    i dont want erik bedard.

theres not a lot out ther enow, but once the all star break is over people will be made available

  77. Y CHOLLY Says:

what’s wrong with bedard? we might have an ‘in’ because of gillick’s interest in seattle.. who knows.. when teams get you by the short hairs, it’s like highway robbery - stripping our farm sys dry..does not thrill me either..
