Gamenight: Phillies (44-39) At Braves (40-43)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, July 01, 2008 05:45 PM
The Phillies return to National League play, and not a moment too soon. The Phils went a horrible 4-11 in Interleague play, culminating in a lifeless 5-1 loss to Texas. The Phils lost every Interleague series and are now just 0.5 games ahead of the Marlins in the division. Awesome.
Of course, coming back to the Senior Circuit isn’t all fun and games. Now the Phils have to play 10 games against three of the league’s best/most frightening teams: Atlanta, New York and Saint Louis. It starts with a three-game set in Atlanta against Charlie Morton. No, not Charlie Murphy, but Charlie Morton. He’s a right-handed rookie who was lit up considerably in the Minors. His ERA never went under 4.29 (how do you move up with a bad ERA in the GCL?), yet he found his way to AAA and put up a shocking 2.05, putting him in the Majors with the Braves. As usual, the Braves find a guy with a very down-homey name and somehow, he’ll turn in a fine season. He has a 4.24 ERA; oddly enough, he’s the second guy in a row the Phils are facing with an ERA of exactly 4.24.
Kyle Kendrick is coming off possibly his career-best start, an eight inning masterpiece against Oakland, one of the Phils three wins in their last 12 games.
By the way, the whole National League has played poorly lately. Only Saint Louis, Cincinnati and Houston have winning records in the last 10, and barely. Yeah, the AL killed us this year.
Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (7-3) 4.59 ERA
Braves: Charlie Morton (1-1) 4.24 ERA
Gametime: 7:00 p.m. EST
Weather: 81, sunny
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Ruiz/Kendrick

Your gamenight beer: Here’s a good summer beer that we might need because it’s strong and will let you forget this team’s really, really poor play. It’s Farmhouse Saison by Hennepin, a New York brewery. This one is delicious. It’s very possible after this game you’ll want to go into some farmhouse and sit alone for hours at a time. Not that I ever did that. ….
Go Phillies!

I get to open the comments just like at the constitutional convention. Lets trade for someone like arroyo, or harang. We don;t have the prospects to get sabatia
July 1st, 2008 at 6:43 pm
Arroyo? I’d rather Myers pitch than Arroyo…
July 1st, 2008 at 6:56 pm
u beat me to it phil… back to howard and utley back to back..liked it the other was
July 1st, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Just for kicks.. since Myers was the #12 pick in the 1999 draft, I looked it up… our first 2 picks were a Pitcher and an Outfielder..
At #12 we took Myers… Alex Rios went #19 to the Blue Jays.
At #63 we took OF - Jason Cooper… John Lackey went #68 to the Angels
July 1st, 2008 at 7:11 pm
Don M, in response to your earlier post - yes, I’m siked for the Braves. Time to win a series.
July 1st, 2008 at 7:12 pm
Holy shit…Rollins had a lead off single and took some pitches. Welcome back to the NL!!!
July 1st, 2008 at 7:13 pm
And Shane swings at the 1st pitch. I’m sick of this 1st pitch swing shit, especially against a guy you’ve never seen before.
July 1st, 2008 at 7:17 pm
why is Howard back hitting 4th
July 1st, 2008 at 7:44 pm
nice play chase! huge!
July 1st, 2008 at 7:45 pm
such a good point phil
July 1st, 2008 at 7:49 pm
J ROLLS BACK!
*makes fart noise with mouth and arm*
July 1st, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Vic took a pitch this time
July 1st, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Yeah, swing at ball 4 Vic. You don’t need no walk!
July 1st, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Victorino homers?!?!
July 1st, 2008 at 7:55 pm
it looks like they came to hit tonight
July 1st, 2008 at 7:58 pm
It’s great to watch the NL Phils again. 4-0, 5 straight hits - hopefully the last 2 weeks have been just an AL mirage.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:01 pm
even Jenkins is hitting again
July 1st, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Jenkins got a hold of that one!
July 1st, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Is anyone else watching this game on mlb gamecast?? Did Ozzie Smith talk for 10 minutes straight or what? Unbelievable! What the hell was he even talking about?
I love hearing the dejected Braves announcers as the Phillies bash them. It’s too bad Ozzie just kept talking and talking and talking..
July 1st, 2008 at 8:03 pm
how bout the fact that we have had 4 straight singles from home run hitters
July 1st, 2008 at 8:05 pm
The only question is: will Feliz or Ruiz ground into a DP
July 1st, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Neither.. maybe the Phils are back
July 1st, 2008 at 8:14 pm
Yeah, AL mirage sounds about right, but here’s the problem…you have to face an AL team in the WS. If we can’t beat the AL we can’t win the WS. No NL team can win the WS unless it’s a fluke because the AL is far superior. Even the Royals beat up pretty bad on the NL.
July 1st, 2008 at 8:33 pm
Jenkins going 2 for 3 with a cycle threat? WHAT?!?!
July 1st, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Kendrick is looking great again
July 1st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Don’t jinx it Keith…
July 1st, 2008 at 8:45 pm
i thought about that when i said it
July 1st, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Bronson Arroyo gave up 10 runs in one innings. I dont even want anyone on my team who gave up 10 runs in one innings
July 1st, 2008 at 9:10 pm
nice to see them reasserting their dominance over the garbage national league east.
a nice performance by kendrick, who contunally shows why he is not tradeable.
i would trade none of our top prospects so you can have them available to you next year to actually play for this team.
just put together the best package you can without dipping into that and get the best guy you can without jeopardizing the future at all.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
geoff jenkins should be just released. what a worthless player. the bases are loaded! get the bat on the ball and get at least just one guy in.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Geoff, I actually blame Charlie for that one. Who gives a guy a 3-0 green light with the bases loaded?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:13 pm
Yeah Jenkins yeah!
July 1st, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Honestly, I can’t decide which Geoff is more frustrating; the highly paid, under-achieving outfielder or the loud mouth, over-reacting armchair GM.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
I can say with confidence that I wouldn’t be the least bit sad if Wheeler died.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:18 pm
haha me too Clare, as long as it ain’t Harry K.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:19 pm
Oh great…here we go.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:19 pm
why what did wheeler say now?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:21 pm
good move, let him leave the game only having given up 2. no way he can get a loss, keeps confidence up. nice outing by kyle kendrick
July 1st, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Nothing in particular, he just constantly pisses me off with his comments. Plus he’s a Penn State fan, I go to Pitt!!
July 1st, 2008 at 9:21 pm
damn, thoere goes the scoreless streak.
fyi, this probably means nothing, but yahoo has durbin listed as the starter for thursday.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:22 pm
It’s ashame he let up those 2. I wanted to see another 8 inning 0 runs outing for him. Watch his ERA plummet to a low 4. Kendrick is shaping up to becoming a solid #3.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Manuel already said Durbin isn’t starting.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:22 pm
And thanks, Phil! I must say you’re one of my favorites on here.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:22 pm
oh im sorry for speaking out and pointing out things that are obvious and shouldnt need to be said.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:23 pm
well he does say stupid stuff but i cant be mad at him for being a Penn State fan cuz i go to Penn State
July 1st, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Why thank you Clare. I thought I was 4th most hated behind Mike T. Chris M and Geoff for our severe negativity.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Hahahaha fair enough, Keith.
Random fact that you all probably care nothing about but I’m saying anyway: I’m pretty sure my boyfriend got me a jersey for my birthday, a really nice one but I’m not sure which!
OH and have any of you been to Wrigley? Did you like it?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Man, I don’t like this at all. Man on 1st and 3rd with Chipper, Tex, and McCann all coming up.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:30 pm
What happened to Chris M?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Better make sure left-handed reliever is still on our wishlist. romero has declined of late. need more if you expect to go anywhere in the playoffs
July 1st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
It’s alright Phil, Juan Carlos has everything under control.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
i really wish i could be watching this and not doing the gamecast
July 1st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
error by chase utley, run scores. no doubel play.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Told ya.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
i say they walk mccann
July 1st, 2008 at 9:33 pm
I call him Jesus Christ, but if he doesn’t pick it up then he’s totally losing that name!
July 1st, 2008 at 9:33 pm
nvm stupid gamecast being so slow
July 1st, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Clare, you need to relax.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Romero should never come in when there’s a runner on base. He can’t handle the pressure of runners on base.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:34 pm
it sucks that kendrick pitched so well and isnt gonna be able to lower his ERA
July 1st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
I’m not not relaxed, if it’s the exclamation points that are throwing you off then I always use those.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
Durbin or Gordon in the 8th?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Better be Durbin…fuck Gordon.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:37 pm
true but i wasnt sure if they were showing who is warming up in the pen?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Yeah, Durbin for me too.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
wow i knew that he wasnt going to get the bunt down properly but thank god for the error
July 1st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
You don’t see that much…
July 1st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Its Gordon
July 1st, 2008 at 9:40 pm
well we better get 2 at least out of this situation
July 1st, 2008 at 9:40 pm
THeres no excuse for putting an injured tom gordon in there in a meaningful situation. hope its durbin too
July 1st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Utley is not Mr. Clutch anymore.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
They showed Gordon warming up…so its Gordon
July 1st, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Hey now, Phil.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Horrible, are you kidding me? 3 and 4 batters strike out? Terrible.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:44 pm
The Phillies aren’t back. 2 innings in a row leaving bases loaded not to mention Gordon is coming in. This game is over. We lost.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:45 pm
WHAT?!?! what kind of team gets NO runs out of that? AND thne sends an injured pitcher out there in the 8th innings.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:45 pm
Oh, not to mention the Marlins are coming back. 6-4 in the 8th. The Marlins will probably be in 1st by the end of the night.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:45 pm
It’s funny, the braves telecast was shocked that we left the bases loaded 2 innings in a row… hahaha this is business as usual for us
July 1st, 2008 at 9:46 pm
theyd BETTER win this game.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:46 pm
well if gordon walks anyone he should be out immediatley
July 1st, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Nationals have bases loaded with one out
July 1st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
5.20 ERA! what a set up man! double that man’s salary.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:49 pm
C. Durbin is actually listed on Yahoo sports as Thursday’s starter. Anyone hear anything? Maybe why he isn’t in tonight?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:49 pm
8-4 NATS!
July 1st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
JC Romero is awesome
July 1st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
CZ…Manuel already said that Durbin WILL NOT be pitching Thursday and that he’s staying in the pen where we need him. Gordon is pitching because Manuel is a moron, luckily Gordon got out of it.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Gordon looked pretty darn good…just sayin…
July 1st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
i hope not
July 1st, 2008 at 9:52 pm
I heard that too but I don’t know why a reputable sports website would jump to a random conclusion like that unprovoked. That’s all I’m saying. Maybe we don’t read into it but who knows. I’d rather it was Happ myself…
July 1st, 2008 at 9:54 pm
whew. somehow gordon performed well. now theyll rest him for another two weeks instead of just putting him on the 15-day DL
July 1st, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Dude, the braves line up sucks! Look who he faced!
July 1st, 2008 at 9:56 pm
The rays just pushed their lead to 3-1 with a 2 out single by their catcher. Wow, can ya’ll imagine?
July 1st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
thats good baseball by feliz. get the run in. some of these other guys should take note
July 1st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Hahah Jenkins gets the runner to third he old fashioned way
July 1st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
I wouldn’t call that waltzing, Harry.
July 1st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080701&content_id=3041050&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi
I can’t wait till he’s in a Phillies uniform!
July 1st, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Feliz has 6 lobs just today… Between him and Ruiz it is a empty pit and the bottom of this order
July 1st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
The only thing i hope is that he can improve on the power a little bit, like 15-20 HRs at the major league level
July 1st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
NC Jason…Feliz is really good for a 7 hole hitter. He’s on pace for 20 homers and 80 RBIs with a .260 avg. What more can you ask for, honestly?
July 1st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
wow this guy, boyer, basically sucks.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:01 pm
especially since he is usually batting 8th when Coste is playing now
July 1st, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Yeah but Phil - how unclutch has the guy been? I would rather a big hit then a meaningless solo job in a 9-0 game. That being said that was a huge sac fly. I will give credit when credit is due and he might be one of the best glove men in ML but come on. Those stats do not tell the whole story.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Plus the guy has k’ed 3 times
July 1st, 2008 at 10:03 pm
yea but that is only 33 strikeouts for the season
July 1st, 2008 at 10:04 pm
i will say thats true about feliz. you look at his offensive numbers and youre like, what? he has that many rbis? he plays worse on offense than his numbers actually are.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Im okay with Feliz. He hit a GS the other night. If Myers doesnt suck, we win, remember?
July 1st, 2008 at 10:04 pm
I really hope that we start using Werth more as Burrell’s replacement in close games like this, instead of so taguchi
July 1st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
looks worse i mean
July 1st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
thank god they didnt do it for a third straight inning
July 1st, 2008 at 10:06 pm
brandon watson needs to immediately be called up to replace so taguchi.
this is the stuff that pisses me off. why are taguchi and kenkins taking playing time away from younger players in the system who bring something else to the table aside from committing errors (so) and striking out(jenkins)
July 1st, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Feliz is fine. You all have a lot more to worry about than your 7 hole hitter with 9 homers and 40 RBI’s with a .260 avg and gold glove defense half way through the season. You know what worries me, when your 2 super stars strike out with the bases loaded back to back. That’s a much bigger worry than Feliz.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Who are these guys that the Braves are pitching? Did they find them in a local bar? They look like us the past 2 weeks - score some runs and get back into the game and then pitching shits the bed and gives up more runs.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Jenkins is fine to have on the team, but yea we should get rid of taguchi. I think Jenkins will come around and be the player he should be.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:08 pm
No question about that Phil I just wanted to kill Feliz for a bit for sucking
July 1st, 2008 at 10:09 pm
thats why gillick is a bad general manager despire making some very good moves
ps, the braves, aside from jurrgens, hudson, chipper jones, escobar, mccann and texiera, are total garbage
July 1st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
2 hits a piece for the top six guys in the order
July 1st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
jenkins has given us nothing at all. hes been completely worthless. a call up, even tj bohn can do what he does for less money
July 1st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Campillo has a future Geoff.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:10 pm
I like Pedro Feliz a lot. He doesn’t strike out, he eats up the short/3rd hole, he is quiet and takes care of business. He seriously is my favorite Phillie this year behind Utley.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:11 pm
thats just pointless to sign him. theres already way too much old overpaid junk on this team as we documented today.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:11 pm
hahaha, good one phil
July 1st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Danny - seriously? What about Lidge, Durbin, and some of my favorite Phillies are in the Mets front office because whatever they do helps us.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
Geoff, Jenkins has been horrible the past few weeks, but he actually was pretty good before those 3 weeks. Remember that game against the Marlins where he tied it up on that 2 run home run? Or what about the game against the Stros where we were down by 3 in the 1st inning and Jenkins hit a 2 run shot to put us within 1 and keep us in the game. Jenkins has just been horrible recently. You never saw me bash Lidge. I think he would be much better if he got to play everyday and wasn’t a platoon player. He’s just been slumping really hard.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:12 pm
just caught up on the thread…. i love how people criticize geoff then leave for the nite. besides tim, this guy offers more to this site then anyone. how interesting would it be with no body putting in any good insite we could react too?
anyways huge win for me. my moral is sky high, i got some faith baby!
July 1st, 2008 at 10:13 pm
No, Geoff…I’m serious. Campillo is going to be a good pitcher.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:14 pm
I don’t yet Chris M. They had 2 innings where they left the bases loaded in a row. This score should be 11-3.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:15 pm
some call up can do all of that and much more. watson, even a limping, inured golson can literally do a better job than jenkins at the plate
July 1st, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Campillo is good for scoring 11 runs on him tomorrow
July 1st, 2008 at 10:16 pm
chris m and geoff = love
July 1st, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Thanks for the article on Marson, Phil!
July 1st, 2008 at 10:17 pm
i feel ya but i just got off work and was following on my phone so i just say runs not what we left on….anyhow this win is big to enstill a little confidence in this team and in me
July 1st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
what i give the guy credit bc he offers great insite… maybe it looks like im inn love bc i dont offer other guys respect bc their idiots
July 1st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Feliz also looks and acts like a softball player on my team, so I like him for that too.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
lou marson is going to be awesome.
this win is mandatory over a team thats totally limping to the halfway point like the braves
July 1st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Although, my player hits way better!
July 1st, 2008 at 10:20 pm
kidding chris and geoff
July 1st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Geoff offers good analysis consistently… a lot of people on here do.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
o ha ok…i get more shit on this site then anyone so i wasnt sure.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
appreciate that people agree sometimes.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
No way can we call up TJ Bohn to do what Jenkins does though, cuz he isnt an everyday player at AAA cuz he is batting in .170, plus jenkins plays a pretty decent RF and is always giving it his all
July 1st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
I have to be honest- I would only feel bad a little if the Phils sweep the braves again.
Anyone else think the Braves announcers will be whiney drunk by Thursday afternoon if this happens?
July 1st, 2008 at 10:23 pm
I think they need to sweep this series and take 3 from the Mets. Come back into the NL East and show them all that we were just in a slump and we’re not going to fuck around and take any shit.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:23 pm
i could count on a single hand people that offer good insite day in and day out. some offer good insite but you only see them every few days(nothingwrong with that, not everyone could look at this at work and all)
July 1st, 2008 at 10:23 pm
People always say the Phillies have a crap system but if you look at their top prospects they have a chance to be solid. Not to mention most of the players on the team now went through the fram system
July 1st, 2008 at 10:24 pm
this really is a good site. there are at least a dozen people on here who i will read their long rants. people really have good ideas on here. like the idea to get aaron harang. i forgot whos idea it was though.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Chris I rarely give you shit, and agree with you 95% of the time. Sometimes you just get a little too hard on people that don’t deserve it.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:24 pm
That being said - you can not bring up Bohn and expect him to produce even if it is only every 3 games
July 1st, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I think my problem with Jenkins (other than his recent slump) is more a problem with me and my expectations for him. I think we all hoped he would come in here and bash lefties and righties to the tune of 25 and 90 like he did for a few years with the Brewers.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:25 pm
thats the key NC… look at this team and see how many went throught the system, a good amount…wade had some good drafts
July 1st, 2008 at 10:25 pm
I said we should go after Harang, Geoff. I think a few others did too.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:26 pm
yeah but thats basically what jenkins gives you.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:27 pm
When did this turn into a site where we sing songs, hold hands, and then give each other hugs? Phil sucks, Chris M is mean, Geoff is dumb …..
kidding!!!!!!!!!! I enjoy this site so much because being in NC it gives me people to talk to who are die-hard fans and I can relate to. So tahnks to all for their comments, even if I do not agree.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:27 pm
GOod call then phil. i will personally call walt jockettey and ask him what he wants for harang.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:28 pm
ha i know phil, im harsh bc some people say some real dumb stuff (and nobody wants to say anything but someone needs to et these peeps know sometimes)… i prob have but i heard someone say myers would be better in the bullpen then flash… why would someone ever think that after seeing myers pitch this year, even though flash hasnt been great.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:29 pm
I live in Orlando and have 0 Phillies friends except my Dad who lives in Jersey. It’s just nice to have company to watch the game.
This place is like an online bar, you know? Some dudes get drunk by the third inning (chris maybe) and misspell everything, some dudes say stuff like “that whippersnapper Howard better not stare at his homerun” and there are dudes who are constatly negative and sarcastic (like me). It’s great to be here.
Thanks everyone.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:30 pm
NC forgot to mentipon you, ha, but youve given me some good laugh, you had the best rant on this site ive ever seen, it impressed me
July 1st, 2008 at 10:30 pm
NC Jason, we are on the same page. Well done with the hand holding and songs. Someone had to make that joke.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:31 pm
“… that rant……… it…… impressed me.”
LOL
July 1st, 2008 at 10:31 pm
What rant was that?
July 1st, 2008 at 10:32 pm
isnt harang also signed reasonably for two more years with another option. 11mm next year, 12.5mm the year after, and an option that increases to 13 id he goes over 200 inning in 2010.
ill take that contract
wow, mitch said jenkins changed his aprroach. is he changes his swing maybe hell be not totally worthless. he hit the ball tonight, thats a plus.
ill bet the philies go on a rampage now they they are back in their comfort zone against NL garbage pitching
July 1st, 2008 at 10:32 pm
ha danny havnt seen you around much but i like what i see,i type fast and dont check bc i figure everyone gets the piont… its good to have good crews here for games
July 1st, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Chris M, which rant? Also, I’m not even going to say who the worst poster(s) on this site are, but I’m pretty sure you agree with me who it is.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:33 pm
oh and by the way TJ Bohn this year at AAA is batting .200 in 160 ABs with 3 HRs and 8RBIS. Tell Me how that would be better then Jenkins
July 1st, 2008 at 10:34 pm
i just remember you being called a redneck by somebody and went nuts and offended a lot of people (me excluded), just a few weeks ago
July 1st, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Snelling could be better than Jenkins.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
phil, had to think a bout it for a SECOND ha i know. that was good
July 1st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Choosing the best and worst poster is a challenge. What do you value in a poster? I personally prefer short, precise quips. And 0 critical thinking. That’s a key.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Did I call him a redneck? I remember calling someone a redneck recently. Maybe it was on here?
July 1st, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Snelling possibly could be but we are kind of stuck with Jenkins and hopefully with this new batting approach that Charlie has given him he will get out of this slump.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:36 pm
it mite of been you phil but im not sure but it went back and forth and it was great to watch since i dont usually get to watch it bc im usually in it
July 1st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
TJ Bohn sucks. He hit one lucky double- okay
July 1st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
he makes less money than jenkins and didnt totally suck when he was called up this year
July 1st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
im not worried bout jenkins ye bc taguchi is still on this team (terrible bunt tonite) but ill woryy bout jenkins once this terrible jap is gone
July 1st, 2008 at 10:38 pm
ok maybe not tj bohn. brandon watson would be better though. so would an injured greg golson, playing while hes injured.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:38 pm
haha I think it was me. I called someone a redneck that was from the south and doesn’t get to watch the Phillies that often and was disagreeing with me about something. It was probably NC Jason.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Phil it was me but as we squared it on that thread I am from Philly. Isnt being a good poster like being the best class D player - you still suck
July 1st, 2008 at 10:40 pm
yeah the first order of business is to get So out of here. totally taking playing time away from players that have a future in AA or AAA. hes TOTALLY worthless
jenkins is still a bad signing though. no reason to sign him. hes the old overpaid junk that im talking about. changing his swing will help him not completely suck when hes up there.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
I know he is at AA but with him playing college ball and everything, I think that Jeremy Slayden could help us in the outfield as a 5th OF if we wanted to
July 1st, 2008 at 10:42 pm
Yeah, my bad. I think I was really drunk that night and you insulted my intelligence. I also really dislike dumb white people and the south has a lot of dumb white people.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:42 pm
speaking of overpaid junk - that is one of the problems with baseball right now, half the league is overpaid pieces of junk anymore, so every team is always going to have that
July 1st, 2008 at 10:43 pm
even steve susdorf, senior from the national champion fresco st bulldogs, 19th rd pick, will help us more than so taguchi or even geoff jenkins
July 1st, 2008 at 10:43 pm
fresno st
July 1st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
No worries, I do not take things on this site that seriously. I am on board with hating dumb white people - I just happen to work and go to school at ECU. But I thought I was funny.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:44 pm
thats exactly right keith. maybe you can get away with one or two guys, but the phillies have way too many of them
July 1st, 2008 at 10:45 pm
Keith - but that is the way right now, the contract Silva signed with SA talk about paying a lot for junk…
July 1st, 2008 at 10:45 pm
i thinkt he ke to a good 5th outfielder would be somebod with not great future bc i dont want him to loose valuable playing time since most of the time its for running and defense, but someone who could handle a bat when needed a bunt of importand sac fly or something, and someone who could handle this role .usually a vet bc its a tough role
July 1st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
And because people pay a lot for junk the ones who are good get paid 20x what they are worth
July 1st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
well i know that Jenkins is one of them, and Howard to some degree, but who else Geoff?
July 1st, 2008 at 10:47 pm
phil u hate dumb whit people, try S. florida for a day
July 1st, 2008 at 10:48 pm
exactly. thats rampant in baseball as well as almost all sports. carlos silva got 11mm a year for 4 years! thats insane!!!!!! that set the sport of baseball back 5 years
July 1st, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Go Phillies! Good night, thanks for the laughs guys.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:49 pm
yea and the way Kyle Lohse is pitching right now, he is somehwo gonna get 13 mil a year from someone
July 1st, 2008 at 10:49 pm
As bad as Jenkins is, at least we didn’t get Andruw Jones…
July 1st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
I have family in S. Florida. My uncle from S. Florida chew snuff and claimed last year that the Rox were going to sweep the BoSox and that Papelbon is the most overrated closer in baseball. I mean Papelbon is overrated, but he made it out to be that Papelbon was just straight up bad.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:50 pm
but that is also why the M’s GM no longer has a job
July 1st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
yea i think he has to be the most overpaid piece of crap right now
and to go with the contracts, another thing to blame for it is the damn Yankees
July 1st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
look at the deals they have given to Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright
July 1st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
in the past
July 1st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
i know hes done well for the most part, but why do we need 39 year old rudy seanez, seriously.
eric bruntlett is only 28, but brad harman offers more promise than he does. bruntlett can play every position but catcher thats why hes on the team
tom gordon has had a great career, hes still got the talent, but hes old and injured and makes 5.5 mm a year.
jamie moyer is a revered figure, still performs well, should be a pithcing coach, but he should retire after the season. let him ride this year out and then hire him as a coach.
so taguchi, geoff jenkins as noted.
clay condrey is 32. what the hell does he offer?
July 1st, 2008 at 10:52 pm
I wish we just woulda spend more and got Rowand. Shoulda given Rowand 5 years 55 million. He may have taken the 1 million a year pay cut to stay in Philly. It was the number of years, not the amount he was getting paid.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:52 pm
carlos ruiz is 29, but hes basically completely worthless too
July 1st, 2008 at 10:53 pm
agreed. rowand is missed. this lineup was much better last year.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:53 pm
well seanez is only making like 400,000 and bruntlett is making under a million same with Condrey, condrey has been good for his role as a long reliever in non important situations
July 1st, 2008 at 10:53 pm
I wish we still had Rowand. He woulda been a killer 2 hole hitter this year.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
But that would have been too much for Rowand. He is not worth that much. But that proves that players want money more then playing for a good team.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
yea true about missing rowand by the end of his contract he is just going to be one of those high priced pieces of crap that is why we didnt want to give him a 5 years
July 1st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
I am agreeing that Rowand would have fit nicely either #2 or #6 but 11 mil a year? That is much - even when Utley only makes about 7.5 - 8
July 1st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
common about jeret wright… he was my niegbor during spring training lastyear… i dont wanna go off on baseball contracts though, its disgusting, how do u give zitp all that and now gotta sitt with that contract on your books for the next 5 years, shit like that holds back a franchise for a few years
July 1st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
the yankees are THE place for overpaid pieces of crap. bobby abreu, jonny damon, jason giambo, carl pavano, kei igawa, they resigned andy pettite after he admitted he did steroids, kyle farnsworth.
silvas gotta be the worst. bavasi totally screwed the goat when he made that deal. look at the 3,4,5 pitchers on that staff…silva, washburn, batista. thats sickening
July 1st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
yeah. well then you do some moneyball. replace rowand with a cost-effective guy that gets on base and makes contact and moves runner. not some whiffer like jenkins
July 1st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
I might side with Zito on this one. As a San Fran fan… how do you not just jump off a bridge when you look at his contract and then his results? I bash howard for that reason but it is only for one year.
July 1st, 2008 at 10:58 pm
I didn’t read through all the posts to see if it was mentioned, but did anyone else hear that R.J. Swindle is being brought up?
July 1st, 2008 at 10:59 pm
this is why gillick and the phils dont like to give pitchers contracts longer then 3 years, cuz San Fran is stuck with zito for a long time.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:02 pm
NEPA where did you hear that? No it wasnt mentioned
July 1st, 2008 at 11:02 pm
i wasnt bashing zito, who would ever deny that, but i blame MLB for letting it go this far, meche 55 mil, silva 44 mil, Lilly and more is sickening. i hate boras more then anyone, jd dreww 13 mil a year u crazy??????
July 1st, 2008 at 11:03 pm
No I am saying that I think that the zito contract was the worst one possibly ever
July 1st, 2008 at 11:04 pm
i know you are not bashing Zito but 3-12 5.99ERA he is worst then Myers right now and is on a contract of 7 years 126 million
July 1st, 2008 at 11:04 pm
also has more BBs then Ks now
July 1st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Apparently it was announced on SportsNite. I didn’t hear it first hand, someone told me about it.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
F Boras, i know he doing his job but its gonna cause problems in a few years
July 1st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
You kind of have to give pitchers 4,5 years though. gillick is wrong when he does that. you have to do your homework on a guy and you always run that risk. but GOOD pitchers dont want to play for 3 years, not even kyle lohse, who knows hes better off playing on a one year deal and gettin gpaid this winter.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:05 pm
http://www3.allaroundphilly.com/blogs/delcotimes/ryanl/2008/07/lefty-reliever-promoted.html
July 1st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
good starting pitchers i mean.
if they offer lidge 2 or 3 years he will laugh at us.
4 years 50 million for lidghe. and id do that in a second. they have no choice
July 1st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
he already has caused problems, thats why he hate JD Drew cuz Boras wanted so much money from us. Plus Maddux great pitcher but he is making 10 milllion dollars a year
July 1st, 2008 at 11:07 pm
thats a strange move. swindle is a reliever, that might mean durbin.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:08 pm
dont let lidge hit the market.he’ll be gone.. could of gave him an extension b4 the year for nothing. i know we didnt know hed be this good but we kne what we were gonna get but we got better
July 1st, 2008 at 11:09 pm
i just dont understand why they would bring up Swindle, if CHarlie said that we are not using Durbin to start
July 1st, 2008 at 11:10 pm
If they move Durbin into the rotation I’ll flip. Durbin has a history of being a terrible starter. He’s got like a 1.41 ERA in his current role, leave him there for christs sake. I’d rather them bring J.D. up and start him than take Chad out of the bullpen.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:10 pm
Swindle could be the lefty reliever we need but I really dont want Durbing to start :(, I feel like that could be a mistake cuz of who knows what is going on with Gordon
July 1st, 2008 at 11:10 pm
i cant believe that article until i see it. not logical at all. has to be happ or carrasco
July 1st, 2008 at 11:10 pm
i agree with you Geoff
July 1st, 2008 at 11:10 pm
If lidge hits the market he is gone. Some team (yankees) will overpay and we will not match the offer. I think the all-star break would be a good time to resign.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:11 pm
agreed.durbin is having a CAREER year in his current role. changing that is just not a good idea in midseason
July 1st, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Well the Yankees wont sign him even if they overpay him cuz Lidge wont want to be a set up guy again
July 1st, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Well I wouldn’t believe it strictly based on the article alone, but it was announced on SportsNite. And based on when he made that post, thats probably where he got his info as well.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:14 pm
well nothing was reported on the Phils website yet so who knows
July 1st, 2008 at 11:14 pm
I would not take Durbin out of the spot where he has been preforming. That could really mess him up for the rest of the year. We need someone for a couple of starts.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:15 pm
and another stupid thing about that is he could only give us 4 innings in the first start prolly
July 1st, 2008 at 11:15 pm
maybe condrey is our starter… how funny would that be
July 1st, 2008 at 11:16 pm
I would love to see Carrasco or Happ called up. They should keep Swindle up for now and send down Condrey, he is the only truly weak link in our bullpen this season.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Keith I would say that he could only give us 4 innings for a couple of starts which would tax the bullpen
July 1st, 2008 at 11:16 pm
funny news we beat Zach Segovia(we just released him) tonight in class A ball
July 1st, 2008 at 11:18 pm
why not start condrey one game and then Madson then next?
July 1st, 2008 at 11:18 pm
Haha, true. Durbin would only give us about 4 or 5 innings in his first start (sub-par pitching more than likely as well) and then Charlie would be looking out in the bullpen for Chad to replace himself. Unless Chad really sucked, then we could just bring in Condrey for his usual meaningless performance.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Gillick says that he doesn’t want to mess with the bullpen, and I have heard that they have pushed back Hamels and Moyer to Thursday and fir day respectively, so it does make sense that they would promote Swindle. Condrey is away with his family so the bullpen is short a pitcher right now anyhow. The Phillies needed another lefthanded and Swindle has great numbers in AAA so he had to have his chance in the majors sooner or later.
As for the starter, I still think it will be Happ (maybe Carrasco) and that Durbin will stay in the bullpen. Swindle would be called up now and then Happ (or Carrasco) would be called up Saturday to start that day. Condrey, Taguchi, or Swindle would have to be DFA’ed first though.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
that is a good point phil i totally forgot about that, well they would prolly send swindle back down or DFA condrey and just for the sake of it please DFA Taguchi
July 1st, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Hey, we may need Taguchi to bomb a few against our boy Wagner this weekend. He’s got a history of doing that.
July 1st, 2008 at 11:25 pm
that is going to be a huge series, home or away?
July 1st, 2008 at 11:29 pm
It’s a home series. We finish the first half of the season on a 10 game homestand.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:12 am
Swindle is probably only coming up until the mysterious 5th starter comes into the picture.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:21 am
THIS JUST IN!!! The Myers demotion was a brilliantly orchestrated punking by Kendrick. Revenge for the Japan stunt. Ok, kidding. But that would have been the ultimate ball-buster.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:28 am
Tommy A…don’t fuck with us like that. We’re all really happy he’s in AAA.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:58 am
Wow. Just got in tonight — my recap will be based on highlights and such, but great turnout for such a great win. Nice job, guys.
July 2nd, 2008 at 1:12 am
Phil…I’m happy too bro.
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:38 am
Now these are the Phillies we know and love! Back at home against NL pitching (I hope!).
