Gamenight: Phillies (45-39) At Braves (40-40)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, July 02, 2008 06:08 PM
The Phillies greeted the National League with a Coke and a smile yesterday, beating the Braves 8-3 in a solid, if standard win. Kyle Kendrick pitched well enough, the offense hit well enough, the Braves were bad enough.
Tonight Adam Eaton goes for the good guys against Jorge Campillo. It’s the second time this year these two will face off. The Phils scored three runs in 5.1 innings against Campillo, while Eaton gave up three runs, as well, June 8. The Phils won 6-3.
The offense got a boost last night, and I’m especially proud to report Geoff Jenkins had two hits, keeping that elbow low and driving the ball on a line. It would be nice for that to continue. Obviously.
Cole Hamels will start tomorrow. No word yet on who starts Friday against the Mets.
Phillies: Adam Eaton (2-6) 4.86 ERA
Braves: Jorge Campillo (3-2) 2.54 ERA
Gametime: 7:00 p.m. EST
Weather: 85, sunny
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Werth/Feliz/Coste/Eaton

Your gamenight beer: Tonight’s beer is Ellie’s Brown Ale by the Avery Brewing Co. out in Colorado. I dig it cause there’s a dog on the label, and while I’m not a dog guy per say, I like this dog. I’d assume this is Ellie, and she probably just had a long day hunting rabbits and fetching things for master. Good dog. Good. Dog. Eat some grilled portobello mushrooms and linguini with this.
Go Phillies!

Let’s go Phils, tonight would be a good game for Eaton to suprise us all and go 8 strong innings.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:55 pm
Fred, Eaton has gone 8 innings one game and 6-7 almost every single other outing this year. Eaton has been a huge surprise this year.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:00 pm
He may have pitched quite a few innings every game, but how many times has he gone 7-8 and given up only 1 or 2 runs ? I’m talkin ’bout a dominating start, in the mold of King Cole
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Eaton is our 5th starter not our ace…I expect him to give up 3 runs, as long as he can keep us in the ballgame.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I got to agree with Phil. Although Eaton is overpaid, he is just our fifth starter and as long as he keeps us in the game and doesn’t pitch like last season, I’ll be happy. He is not an ace and never was. If the Phillies make the playoffs this year, don’t expect to see him on the roster.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm
Carrasco isn’t making his scheduled start for Reading tonight. Let the rumor mill begin…
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:31 pm
I never said I expected him to go 8 innings and give up 1 run, i just said it’d be a nice night for him to do it, chill…
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:42 pm
GOD DAMMIT!!! EATON HITS A SINGLE AND COSTES SLOW ASS COULDN’T SCORE!!!
Fred, it’s not going to happen, especially against the Braves. I bet Chipper Jones averages one run a game off the Phillies by himself over the years. Also, not to mention that Teixera kills Eaton and McCann and Frenchy are Phillies killers(although Frenchy hasn’t been this year thank god.) It’s hard to only let this line up get 1 run off of you.
Thanks for the info PhillyFriar. That makes things interesting. I’d like for it to be Carrasco honestly.
I’d take Eaton over Myers at this point in the game as the 4th man in the post season, but that’s just me.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:46 pm
It would be nice if Carrasco could bridge the gap between now and a good trade to really make a push… that could be more wishful thinking than anything else though
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:47 pm
Would it be better to start Carrasco (if it is him) tomorrow on the road against a team the Phils have been hitting hard or this weekend against the Mets (will they move up Moyer’s start to Friday depending on who’s starting for the Mets – Santana I think)
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Carrascos got a bright future ahead of him, but I just worry that they’ll bring him up, he’ll get shelled and then his trade value will decrease slightly
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:53 pm
I’d put Carrasco up against Santana. Santana will shut us down because we can’t hit good AL pitching(and yes he’s been in the NL for a few months now so he’s still AL born and raised IMO.) So let them go up against a guy that has no book on him and hope we get to their lousy pen. Manuel already said he wants to make sure Moyer gets the extra rest, so I could see our mystery pitcher starting Friday night, and right now I think it’s going to be Carrasco.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:57 pm
I wish they would wait on bringing him up cuz his last start at AA was terrible 3IP 7ER and his career ERA at AA is over 4 in about 30 starts.
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:00 pm
RYAN HOWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!! He’s catching up to Utley and Hamilton for homers and ribbies!!!
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:00 pm
thats what im talking about ryan !
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:34 pm
So Myers line tonight 5IP 3ER 5H 6K 2BB 0HR 1Wild Pitch 1 Passed Ball and 100 pitches (60 strikes) he had a good 4 innings had only given up 2 hits coming into that inning but gave up the Hits and the walks in that inning
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:36 pm
So i would say that tonights start for Myers looked promising until the 5th inning where he blew up again. Also something that looks bad about it is that he had the 100 pitches in 5 innings.
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
God I’d love to see Carrasco come up and pitch Friday night. I would just love to see a new face on the mound and see how he handles that situation.
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
That’s not the most encouraging start. Still, 6 K’s in 5 innings isn’t too shabby.
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Hm, not a Q. Myers shouldn’t be allowed to come back up until he has 3 Qs in a row. Pat the Bat had another homer tonight!
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:41 pm
I agree Nepa put him up against one of the best pitchers in the game today. Eaton let up a home run on a good pitch. It’s all good Eaton.
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Just saw a webgem.
July 2nd, 2008 at 8:47 pm
They do need a young face in there. fresh young arm for the rotation
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Take him out of the game, now. Take him out right now.
Thank you.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:03 pm
who do they send down then when Carrasco comes up? Condrey? Swindle technically took Myers spot on the roster
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:04 pm
loaded the bases with no outs
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:05 pm
Gordon goes to the DL to make room for Carrasco, but not until Condrey gets back — that’s my guess.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
Eaton with another good outing.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:11 pm
That’s a great illustration for why Durbin isn’t moving from his bullpen spot — he’s versatile and dependable in a way a young guy wouldn’t be prepared to do.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:16 pm
true nice outing by eaton only wish he could have went 6 though
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Chris good point….it doesn’t look like they’ll move Durbin
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
7pm game tomorrow. What time would Happ or Carrasco need to be at Philly International to be ready for the game?
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:43 pm
they get to the ballpark several hours beforehand.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:44 pm
well they wont have to cuz Hamels is pitching tomorrow night in Atl and they are coming home for the mets series
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:47 pm
I bet Carrasco/Happ will meet us in NY.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
the series is in Philly Phil
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:48 pm
well then theyll be alone because the games are home this weekend
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Why is Madson in the game?
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Oh yeah forgot. haha He’ll be waiting at CBP. NC Jason MAdson is in the game because Frenchy is a righty has been struggling and Madson is having a great year.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 pm
See what I mean? Madson has been a beast after April.
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:53 pm
nevermind…. good call charlie
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Madson since May 1st has a 2.15 ERA
July 2nd, 2008 at 9:59 pm
By the way, note the use of the bullpen tonight. Instead of going to Gordon, they went to Madson in the 8th. I think they give Gordon a couple weeks of rest and have him ready to come back after the all-star break and by then they know what they have in Swindle and may have made a deal creating a spot for someone.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I understand that he has pitched well that does not mean I am confident that he will pitch lights out
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Way to get that one back!
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:01 pm
maybe but why would they not put gordon on the 15 day DL then, they are already down a pitcher cuz of myers being sent down and not having condrey
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:02 pm
true but he was coming in to get one out would you have felt more confident with Gordon coming in instead of Madson
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:04 pm
That is a coin flip question
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:04 pm
its ashame we cant make the braves an american league team and meet them in the world series possibly
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:05 pm
exactly NC Jason, cuz thats what Manual had for the options, cuz it def seems like Charlie does not like to have Lidge pitch more then an inning.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:06 pm
its nice to see howard being more patient at the plate even though he just got lucky as how
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:06 pm
i meant Hell
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:07 pm
oh no. if there was some way for so taguchi to give the braves runs by screwing up during this at bat, he would find a way to do it.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:07 pm
I would not extend my closer if I did not have to either…. 2 innings saves are tough and taxing… but Madson got the job done so good for him and good move by charlie
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:08 pm
GIDP like clockwork. get that guy off my freakin team!
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:08 pm
SO CAN FUCKING JUMP OFF A BRIDGE SWINGING AT THE FIRST PITCH?!?!?
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:09 pm
lidge hasnt gotten work during their slump so theyre really looking to get him work
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:11 pm
I know theyre a cheap team, but how awesome would it be to sign mark texiera as a free agent?
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:11 pm
can we get rid of taguchi now?
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:12 pm
geoff where would you play him?
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:13 pm
Is Swidle actually at the stadium? This would be a nice chance to get a look at him if they had been thinking ahead. How many times this year has Lidge come in in a nonsave situation bc of 8th/9th inning runs?
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:15 pm
you would play him at 1b because howard can not pick up a god damn ball
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Just a thought, is Charlie starting to see So’s defense as shaky? He brought in Bruntlett as Burrel’s replacement….
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:16 pm
make him lose weight and play third base. or trade ryan howard for a kings ransom of young mlb ready players/pitchers.
not saying hes better than howard. but smart teams figure out ways to create trade chips and gain assets. if youre smart in free agency you can create a surplus and create demand by coughing up some money
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
so’s gotta go
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:17 pm
they need to pound them tomorrow night to give lidge a night off
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:18 pm
But wont having 2 expensive 1B be seen as a reason we HAVE to trade Howardso teams will give up less — plus how many teams are willing to pay him?
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:20 pm
the angels and the yankees and the red sox. some random team that isnt usually a player will step up and be a player too.
and that error is why howard cant play first base and is really a DH
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
and the red sox dont care that they alreayd have youkilis and david ortiz thneyll find a spot for him
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:21 pm
What is worse So batting or Howard’s defense?
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:22 pm
bad defense costs runs.
so taguchi costs runs too though
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:24 pm
brad lidge is awesome
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:25 pm
even when he has an off night he wont blow the save
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:25 pm
And we got him so cheaply and to think the Houston fans didnt want him.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:26 pm
resign this guy. what other closer strikes out mark texiera with a full count and the bases loaded when hes having a bad night
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:28 pm
we have to give this guy what he wants. yes we did get him cheaply. michael bourn is decent and wouldve been a nice 4th outfielder here but the other two? eh geoff geary was ok
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:28 pm
i dont know if he had a bad night tonight, Howard is the blame for that. He did strike out the side
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:29 pm
haha yes look at myers on that iron pigs uni, wearing number 44
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:30 pm
bad nights for lidge are letting someone get to second base before striking out the side
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:30 pm
yea Bourn would be nice as our 5th or 4th OF but he is turning into a Joey Gathright type player in Houston. I have been keeping tabs on him this year and he isnt even batting 240 in about 300 ABs
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:33 pm
I dont think I ever sweated out a 4 run lead in the bottom of the ninth like that before, Howard should’ve let Utley take that second one, if he didn’t homer tonight I would’ve really been pissed at him…
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:37 pm
yeah he cant get on base. hes one of the best baserunners in mlb when he does get on.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:40 pm
WPHT star of the game: Chad Dubin. My choice as well. Although Ryan Howard did win $1000 for someone during the Daily News Home Run Payoff Inning.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:42 pm
myers is 0-1 in the minors
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Why can’t we win against the AL? Is their pitching that much better?
This is not a Negadelphia question. But we get back to the NL East and win two in a row. What happened against the AL? Is that whole league seriously that much better?
And if so, HOW DO WE GET SOME OF THOSE PITCHERS?!?!
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:54 pm
jurrgens has a 23.67 IP scorless streak going so it is going to be tough tomorrow
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:55 pm
well the Angels, Red Sox and Blue Jay pitchers that we faced are some of the best in the bigs, the Rangers we would have won two out of three if it wasnt for myers
July 2nd, 2008 at 11:02 pm
most of those guys the Angels have were homegrown i think. you have to spend money to keep the good ones around. the phillies are so far away from having a sustained deep farm system. they are strong in AA and A but not in AAA. theyre a ways away from having an assembly line of mlb starters like some of these fgarm systems can churn out
July 2nd, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Keith, you’re forgetting the A’s who have the best ERA in majors.
July 2nd, 2008 at 11:03 pm
Jurrgens is bound to let up some runs. How about tomorrow against the Phillies?
July 2nd, 2008 at 11:06 pm
yea i knew i was forgetting someone
July 3rd, 2008 at 1:23 am
A 3-6 record with a 4.80 ERA for 8 million dollars isn’t a bargain, its a ripoff. Is this philliesnation.com or the adam eatonballsackriders.com. Happ, Carrasco, Bastard, or Outman would probably not do worse than Eaton yet we want to give him seconds of dessert for winning tonight. If Durbin doesn’t bail him out, you would have just had another shit outing from Eaton
July 3rd, 2008 at 1:34 am
How many times do I have to explain that w/l isn’t a pitcher stat but a team stat?
July 3rd, 2008 at 6:07 am
lol well said barry zito. Eaton is definatley pitching better than last year, but he still is an absoloutley horrible mistake of a free agent signing.
