Gamenight: Phillies (52-44) At Marlins (50-45)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, July 18, 2008 06:12 PM

Welcome to the second half of the 2008 baseball season!

The Phillies find themselves opening the second half the way they opened the first: tied for first place. The Mets saddled up next to them with their 10th straight win, a comeback win over the terrible Reds. Now the Phils will wipe the slate clean. It’s 66 games to the finish.

And the Phils open the second half with a new member of the roster. Joe Blanton joins the Phillies, but won’t start for almost a week. Tonight it’s Jamie Moyer back to work. He pitched eight days ago against the Cardinals (seems like a lifetime ago).

The Phils will face Ricky Nolasco, who dominated the Phillies last time out back in Miami. That was the beginning of the Phils quest back to Earth. I’d say it’s high time the Phils start lifting themselves off Earth again.

Moyer is 9-0 against the Fish lifetime (nine-for-nine). The Phillies are 12-4 on Fridays.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (8-6) 3.95 ERA
Marlins: Ricky Nolasco (10-4) 3.70 ERA

Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 82, partly sunny
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Feliz/Ruiz/Moyer

Your gamenight beer: For a beer like Cantillon Gueuze 100% Lambic, you have to treat it like a wine. Store it, wait for the right time, enjoy every sip as if it was your last. Sure, tonight you may have a Miller Lite or whatever makes you loony, insane crazy. But for this game, for a Jamie Moyer start, go with the slow stuff. Get the half started right. And eat some pizza with prosciutto and mozzarella. Mmmm.

Go Phillies!

Just tried to sit through SC tonight and 45 min. of the hour was about the Mets winning streak. I mean, thats great and all, and we’re all impressed, but………..

ESPN gets such a hard on for the NY teams, BOS, The Lakers, and the Cowboys. It gets so old. I wish I lived in the Philly area.

  2. Thom Says:

SC AND ESPN ARE THE BIGGEST WASTE OF TIME ANYMORE

  3. TJ Says:

I’m sure the other 15 minutes was about Brett Favre. Something along the lines of “Breaking News: Brett Favre just woke up from his nap. Does this mean he’s not going to comeback afterall? We return with Len Pasquarelli who has the inside scoop on Favre and today’s happenings.”

  4. Thom Says:

breaking news brett favre is comming back, the mets won 10 straight the rays are in the race and the redsox are playing tonight o wait i knew all that so this isnt breaking news to us but to them its like the only thing going on.

  5. BeatWritersSuck Says:

awwwwwwwwwe poor little phillies feeling neglected

  6. Thom Says:

jimmy ummmmm hello the first pitch dont swing.

  7. The Man Says:

The Joe Blanton trade wasn’t that bad.

  8. Thom Says:

    yeh big man good swing

  9. danny Says:

I live in Orlando and I’m blacked out tonight. Word on the street (ESPN gamecast) is Jenkins got himself an RBI SINGLE!

  10. Thom Says:

the favre look alike did something

  11. danny Says:

I hate sportscenter and baseball tonight. Very much, I hate them.

  12. danny Says:

We’re on the Mendoza hunt tonight with Carlos! Are you guys as excited as I? Think he’ll get it tonight?

  13. Thom Says:

i want marson dannny and the mendoza watch is going to be a blast whats it 1 more out and hes 199

  14. NJ Says:

Have only got the game on ESPN gamecast so not seeing it… Did Moyer almost go yard there?

  15. scot Says:

is anyone else terrified anytime mike jacobs comes to the plate vs moyer? or is it just me having flashbacks since i was at that sunday game at the bank?

  16. danny Says:

I have the mlb radio going… Sounded like he went to the track (opposite field?!)

  17. danny Says:

How awesome would it be if Howard stayed hot for 2 months.. Hit 55 hrs, 140 rbi’s, .270.. we won the division… He’d have to be considered for mvp. Has there every been an mvp who didn’t make the all star team?

  18. scot Says:

    jimmy rollins last year, danny.

  19. danny Says:

    Back to back!

  20. scot Says:

jeez. even when howard misses, he nearly parks it now.

  21. Thom Says:

it is great to see eaton in the bull pen but i wish he was gone.

  22. TJ Says:

If it wasnt raining that ball by howard would’ve been #2 on the day and 5-0 Phils, But it was. Why does Burrell always get struck out by low and outside? Moyer is doing very well and has fairly well numbers against the Marlins aside from Jacobs. I like Eaton being in the pen, maybe he can lift some stress knowing that he’ll throw 1 or 2 innings rather than starting. If he fails in the pen he needs to be out.

  23. scot Says:

    Jenkins wants the Ashburn.

  24. Thom Says:

Jenkins is feeling it tonight let hope he can keep it up for a while.

  25. Richie Allen Says:

Moyer’s got a no-no so far, huh? Got get ‘em!

  26. TJ Says:

Jenkins is earning his money tonight, RBI single, nice sliding catch, Solo Shot.

  27. scot Says:

that was a fucked up play by vic and burrell. someone’s gotta get to that ball.

  28. Matt Says:

You’re right TJ, I think Jenkins took a long, hard look at himself over the break.

  29. GrrrumpyMiner Says:

Two piss warm “cold” Miller Lites $16……Two “nathans” hot dogs which look like ball park franks $9.50…….. Last Play at Shea with Billy Joel…..PRICELESS! Mets/Phils Tied…….Dogfight!

  30. Thom Says:

Billy joel at she worthless Billy joel at the wachovia center priceless

  31. scot Says:

    and manuel gets tossed. terrific.

  32. Greg V. Says:

    Cholly is atta here!

  33. phil Says:

on the plus side john maine just imploded, can someone tell me why charlie got ejected i dont have a tv feed

  34. Thom Says:

he yelled at jim joyce the hp ump and he said somthing and got the heeve.

  35. Thom Says:

    ruiz watch .198

  36. Jason Says:

Can you really have a guy hitting below .200 in your starting lineup this late in the year?

  37. scot Says:

    carlos!!! .199!!!!!

  38. TJ Says:

You really have to give credit to Ruiz for sucking ass with the stick.

  39. scot Says:

this is more exciting then the abe nunez era.

  40. Thom Says:

This is very intresting how far longer they go with him.

  41. TJ Says:

He can call a game though. Bat him behind the pitcher or forfeit his spot in the order as an automatic out and save time.

  42. scot Says:

you gotta hand it to the marlins announcers. to be professional broadcatsers, live in miami, and obviously do so little research before the game. those guys have it made.

seriously, do they not have newspapers or the internet down there?

  43. Thom Says:

wow go larussa with the batting order.

  44. TJ Says:

    Slow night..

  45. Thom Says:

    this game is boring

  46. Brian Says:

Where’s harry tonight? Tuned in late.

  47. Brian Says:

    where’s harry tonight

  48. Brian Says:

    sorry for double post

  49. Thom Says:

    good point anyone know

  50. christopher Says:

boring how? this has been a really fun game. very good start from moyer, i love watching him make young teams look silly. some big hits, including a surprisingly nice game from jenkins.

  51. Thom Says:

Wheres the hall of famer kalas i miss him

  52. DS Says:

harry’s got something wrong with his eye…forget what it’s called

  53. DS Says:

    ..detatched retina!

  54. Phil Says:

    Who is this other phil?

  55. christopher Says:

hmmm where are the mets fans on a night where cordero doesn’t implode and hand them a win on a silver platter?

  56. Phil Says:

Is anyone else not comfortable enough with only a 2 run lead? That’s not enough. They need to tack on another run or 2 here. It’s the heart of the Marlins order, and they like to hit the long ball.

  57. Phil Says:

Carlos is above the Mendoza line!

  58. Matt Says:

Maybe im in the vast minority, and he WAS great, ,but it’s time for the Harry K era to end. T-Mac is so much better at this stage.

  59. Phil Says:

They’re crying in their mom’s basement, Christopher. “Oh no, we’re not in 1st anymore. We tasted it for 16 hours and now it’s gone.” :’(

  60. Phil Says:

I don’t like any of our announcers all that much Matt. T-Mac would be better if he didn’t do those stupid in game interviews. I’m all for Larry Anderson to take over.

  61. Phil Says:

Bad base running by Ruiz, he got lucky.

  62. Matt Says:

Phil – I think LA is happy with his current color job on the radio. Him and Franskie (sp) really seem to enjoy themselves. I think LA can say more on the radio than he could on TV.

T-Mac is a really solid play by play guy. I agree it’s a shame they stick him out there to do all those interviews – I’m sure that’s not his call.

  63. Matt Says:

Boy it’s so nice having a big time closer.

  64. DS Says:

i was listening to a phils game on the radio earlier this season, around early june maybe, and i believe it was LA who was talking about the homerun jackpot and the contestant’s last name was Cashman, and he said “…and with that last name, you know, shit happens”. *pause* then a quick subject change.

please tell me someone else was listening that night.

  65. Phil Says:

Back in 1st by ourselves! Go Phillies! Go Mutz!

  66. christopher Says:

que geoff complaining about how moyer is going to break down any day now ;D

  67. Phil Says:

Geoff is probably my favorite poster on here when he’s not bashing Moyer.

  68. Jamie Says:

I’ll take Moyer’s performances this year any day of the week. He may be 86 years old, but that sum bitch can sure throw the ball effectively when needed.

  69. Phil Says:

He also is huge in important games. He knew tonight was a must win game. He got it done.

  70. Jamie Says:

We just gotta pray that his arm doesn’t fall off, and I think we’ll be okay. He’s a nice change of pace from the flamethrowers like Hamels & crew. Keeps batters on their toes.

  71. Phil Says:

We don’t really have any flame throwers. Hamels and Kendrick are high 80’s low 90’s. I’m not too sure on Blanton. Myers used to be a flame thrower. He’s low 90’s now. Carrasco is a flame thrower. We’ll see him soon.

  72. Jamie Says:

Well, that wasn’t exactly my point, but whatever. 90’s is pretty damn fast compared to Moyer, and that was my point.

  73. GrrrumpyMiner Says:

you have at Shea at least 1 Mets fan…….maybe more! Billy Joel closing out Shea in style.Tony Bennett did NY STATE OF MIMD….And Now Garth Brooks!

  74. TheBestMetsFan Says:

Good win for the Phillies. Solid pitching will always win. These are the kind of games the Phillies need to win. Can’t win when you give up 6+ runs. Anyway where is metsfan tonight after we lost? After all that shit talking after last nights Mets game. Oh well 10 game winning streak gone. Tomorrow maybe start another good winning streak.

  75. Don M Says:

Geoff is good… when he makes sense… I OFTEN have to question his flipping out and calling for the “blow this team up” kinda stuff.. but he knows his stuff, knows that it takes a solid farm system and a young core to win… look at the Yankees as the prime reason why you can’t just outspend teams and expect to win.

Glad to see us in 1st alone again tonight.. hope we can keep it going!

  76. Phil Says:

I always say on this board that Moyer is our guy to give the ball to to get the job done. He’s HUGE in big situations. He continues to baffle me at the age of 45. All of this talk about his arm falling off is so annoying. He throws the ball 80 mph and he knows his body. He would never do anything to put this team in jeopardy.

  77. Lewisauce Says:

Moyer’s arm/health will be fine. Guys who throw 78 mph fast balls can do it forever. And once again, he proves that grit and experience still have something to teach the youngins.

On a side note, I’m pretty sure I heard on 610 just a bit ago that Myers got shelled tonight. I don’t remember the exact stats and I swear I head ‘em say he pitched for Clearwater (which makes no sense?). Can anybody clear this up?

  78. Matt Says:

Clearwater lost 3-2 last night in a 7 inning game. Brett Myers was the starting pitcher.

Myers pitched 6 2/3 innings (he gave up the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs), 7 hits, 3 runs 2 of which were earned, 1 walk, 6 K’s.

Not a dominating outing, but I wouldn’t say he got shelled. He’s about as ready as he’s going to be this year.

  79. Phil Says:

If Myers can put up the numbers in the bigs that he’s been putting up in AAA then I’ll be happy with that.

  80. Wilson Says:

This from Ken Roesenthal, through mlbtraderumors.com

“The Phillies were recently working on a blockbuster with Colorado that would have netted them Brian Fuentes and Matt Holliday for something like Shane Victorino, J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, and Lou Marson. Those talks have stalled, and the added payroll might’ve been a problem for the Phillies anyway.”

Its an interesting move, but there goes the farm system. What do you guys think?

  81. Phil Says:

This is old news Wilson. I’d do it if you take out Fuentes Marson and Carrasco and add Bastrado, Donald, and another lesser prospect.

  82. Matt Says:

Wilson – As good as Holliday is, I wouldn’t do that deal. Colorado isn’t one of these small market teams, I can’t see why they’d give away Holliday at this time. They should be looking to build around him, not trade him. I think this is just a wild rumor that someone’s dreamed up.

Also, a good hitting catcher is always superior to a power hitting corner outfielder.

  83. Phil Says:

Matt, the Rox are a small market team. His contract is up next year. His value is much higher now than it would be in the winter.

  84. metsfan Says:

Holliday would make your offense the best in the national league! If they get him you would not have to worry as much about picking up another starter!

  85. Phil Says:

We don’t need another starter. There was noone worth getting that’s a #2 type. Holliday would make our offense the best in baseball.

  86. metsfan Says:

True. How about Burnett? He is a #2/3 starter. Whats up with myers? Is he coming back?

  87. metsfan Says:

Are the Philies trying to make a move for Holliday? Who would they have to give up?

  88. Phil Says:

Gillick is trying to stay away from guys that break down. I don’t disagree with him on that one. Burnett is always broken down. He’s also streaky, just like Myers. Myers is coming back next week against the Mets. If he can come back and pitch to his potential he is our #2 guy. As for Holliday, yes a trade is in the works centering around Victorino and prospects. As long as Marson isn’t given up I’d say pull the trigger. Werth can play CF and imo is better than Victorino.

  89. metsfan Says:

I would not give up Marson either. And if Myers can come back and stay healthy then the rotation should be good with Blanton. Blanton pitches a lot of innings so that will help your bullpen from getting over used.

  90. Phil Says:

Yeah, Blanton is a good #3. He eats innings. He gives up runs, but he’ll get support. He’s better than a 4.96 ERA. I’m not in anyways concerned about the back end of our rotation. Moyer/Kendrick is incredible for our #4 and #5 guys. Our whole season may rely on Myers.

  91. metsfan Says:

I know Livan Hernandez is not an ace but he would be a great #4/5 starter. He eats innings also and with blanton & hernandez that would save a lot of innings with the bullpen and the Phillies strenght is the bullpen! And that would help the bullpen to stay strong fininshing up the year. Livan Hernandez has a 9-6 record. His era is 5.44 but in the American League on the Twins. Bring him on a contending team and he can be better.

  92. Phil Says:

Nah, Moyer and Kendrick are fine.

  93. metsfan Says:

What are the Phillies lacking that is a concern going into the 2nd half of the season?

  94. Phil Says:

A bat that can get on base and hit in the clutch. ie Holliday.

  95. metsfan Says:

Ibanez from seattle is on the block. He would help. They are really looking to move him.

  96. metsfan Says:

The pirates would look to trade nady and bay but would they trade with philly?

  97. Phil Says:

Yeah, they’d trade with Philly. It’s not like hockey where we’re division rivals. I wish Pittsburgh was back in our division though. For starters it would be nice to beat up on them like the Cubs get to, and they’re inner state rivals in other sports. Even the Steelers and the Eagles don’t like eachother. I’d rather have Giles, DeJesus, or Holliday over Nady, Bay, or Ibanez. I either want a guy that can get on base a lot for our big boys. Holliday is a bit different. He’s one of the top 10 best hitters in baseball. He will be on base a lot for Howard and Burrell and he’ll also drive in Utley and Rollins. Let’s face it, if we got Holliday Utley will move to the 2 hole.

  98. metsfan Says:

Is Atkins on the block? He would be a get pick up and that would be a scary lineup. And 3rd base is a position you can upgrade. With Jenkins and Worth platooning in RF then 3B is the only other position you can upgrade for that type of player.

  99. Phil Says:

Eh, Feliz is fine. His glove is incredible, and he’s hitting .270 with 12 homers and 45ish RBI’s. We need to upgrade in the outfield. Werth should play everyday over Victorino and Jenkins. If we got Holliday the OF of Werth, Holliday, and Burrell would be ridiculous. That’s a 100+ home run outfield with a .300+ BA and 200+ RBI’s written all over it.

  100. metsfan Says:

Yes, but he is a player you are going to have to give up a lot for! Is it worth giving up he farm system for? Even your top pitching prospects.

  101. Phil Says:

In my opinion it’s worth it if we can give up Victorino, Donald, Carrasco, and a lesser prospect.

  102. metsfan Says:

I just think they are going to ask for your 1st or 2nd to pitching prospect for him. They are going to try the get alot because he is their best player they have.

  103. metsfan Says:

If the Phillies make that move that is a Home Run for them. They will score 8-9 runs a game!

  104. Phil Says:

I’d give up Happ and Carrasco/Bastrado for Holliday to make sure we win a WS.

  105. metsfan Says:

I would do the same thing prospects do not matter when you have a World Series ring at the end of the year!

  106. Phil Says:

Exactly. As long as Marson isn’t trade then we’re fine. Utley and Rollins will secure the middle of the infield for years to come. Hewitt will come up and play 3rd. Golson, Werth, and someone else will be our outfield for years to come. 1B is a question after Howard walks after 2011.

  107. metsfan Says:

Howard will stay! You really think he wants to leave that stadium? Not unless he goes to Colorado. That stadium is to his advantage and to play on a team every year and having a chance to contend puts the ball in the Phillies court! He would sign for less, I think.

  108. Phil Says:

    He wants A-Rod money.

  109. metsfan Says:

The mets and phillies do not have to make any moves for the rest of the year. The only other team that worries me in the national league is the Cubs!

  110. metsfan Says:

Howard is not making A-Rod money no matter where he goes. Unless his numbers are the same and he can play defense he is not going to make that.

  111. Phil Says:

Oh, I know he won’t make A-Rod money, but he can make 20-25 million a year probably. If Tex gets $23 million a year like he’s asking Howard can get $25 million. Only teams that will pay him that are the Cubs, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Dodgers, Giants, and Angels. Only teams that make sense to actually pay him that are the Yankees, Red Sox, and Angels. He’s a DH playing in the NL. Cubs and Brewers are both scary with their starting rotations.

  112. metsfan Says:

If I’m the Phillies I’m trying to re-sign Burrell before he gets on the market at the end of the year!

  113. Phil Says:

Oh, it’s not happening. Burrell is leaving. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him wearing a blue and orange uniform next season.

  114. metsfan Says:

I agree he’s a DH. But lets see how much the market is in 2011. We will see how much Teixeira makes next year. The Brewers have a good rotation but lets see how long their rotation stays healthy!

  115. metsfan Says:

I think burrell is having a great year and he is a met killer. But, I just do not think that is going to happen.

  116. Phil Says:

Yeah, Sheets could collapse, who knows. Their bullpen is atrocious, but Sheets and Sabathia can eat innings. Para(is that his name) is good too. Something tells me Burrell is going to the Mets. As for Howard, the Phillies will offer him 15 million a year. I can see something like 5 years $75 million. He won’t accept that.

  117. metsfan Says:

Parra is ok, Sheets will get hurt and C.C. Sabathia is the only guy that scares me. Not only can he pitch but he can probably hit clean up. He should of been in the HR Derby! Their bullpen will be their down fall!

  118. metsfan Says:

Burrell is not going to the mets! You see the Mets like signing 37+ players, like Alou who they will give a 4yr contract to like they did with castillo so they can retire as a met. I know this is coming from a met fan, but I do not agree or like alot of the moves they make. And last night when I heard El Duque might be back on his 54th birthday that really pissed me off. Enough already with these old part time pitchers!

  119. Phil Says:

Parra has good numbers. I’ve never seen him pitch. Luckily CC wasn’t good last year in the post season. Hopefully it sticks again this year and Sheets gets hurt. Considering they’ll probably make the WC and the NL East will play the WC, that’s what needs to happen.

  120. Phil Says:

haha the combined ages of both New York teams has to be like 7,374,884,543

  121. metsfan Says:

I think we are trying to get Julio Franco to play LF until alou comes back 2 games before the end of the season.

  122. Phil Says:

    hahahaha good one.
