Gamenight: Phillies (56-49) At Nationals (38-67)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, July 29, 2008 05:39 PM

The Phillies begin a six-game road trip tonight against the Nationals.

Brett, Take Two: Less than a week ago Brett Myers walked five with his fastball, but struck out two with his curveball. It’ll be interesting to see how he fares with the former, and if the Nationals can hit the latter. With JA Happ’s addition to the big league roster, Myers will have to perform well to remain in the rotation.

Burrell Blasting: Pat Burrell has homered in 28 different ballparks, a franchise record (Bobby Abreu is second). He can make it 29 by homering in Nationals Park this week.

Eastern Pitch: The Phillies have a 4.05 ERA against the NL East this season, best of all teams intra-division.

Not Feliz: Pedro Feliz is on the 15-day DL, which will give both Eric Bruntlett and Greg Dobbs more playing time.

Phillies: Brett Myers (3-9) 5.82 ERA
Nationals: Colin Balester (1-2) 5.75 ERA

Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 89, partly cloudy
Lineup:

MLB Gameday Audio
MLB Gameday

Your gamenight beer: Dogfish Head, which makes many find beers, brings forth 90 Minute IPA, which is stronger than your 60 Minute, but it really tastes good. Between its nine percent content and superior satisfaction, it reminds you of a good Belgian brew. Perfect for a mild night like tonight. Eat some pork with it.

Go Phillies!

  1. Jamie Says:

Burrell goes deep again tonight. Phils win 10-6

  2. NEPA Says:

Great beer choice tonight. I’m pretty excited for this game tonight, but I can’t stand watching Brett Myers pitch. Maybe tonight he’ll be dominant just so he can afford himself 3 more terrible starts in the future. My wish, Myers gets pounded and is taken out of the game by the 2nd or 3rd inning and is sent to the bullpen for the rest of the season. Happ joins the rotation following tonights game – but the Phils offense still explodes to win the game like 15-13. We rid our rotation of Myers and still get the victory – I can at least wish.

  3. Gavin Says:

Tex traded to Halos. Good that he’s out of the NL, bad because if we ever were to make the WS (please forgive me baseball Gods for even saying that) then the Angels are going be a sack o hell.

  4. Kenny Says:

10-3 Phillies….Burrell, Howard, Jimmy lead the hit parade!!!! And Myers pitches well enough to piss us off for another week

  5. Griffin Says:

Muts start off the game with 3 straight doubles off of Olsen. I wonder if he’ll blame his teammates for those.
Luckily dumb Reyes tried to stretch his into a triple, so it’s only 1-0 so far

  6. CZ Says:

Myers is throwin darts so far. Straight GAS as Mark Grace would say.

  7. CT Says:

wow, it feels like it’s been forever since we’ve seen Utley go yard

  8. NEPA Says:

    What hip injury?

  9. Jamie Says:

Nice to see Myers in mid-season form (pun intended) and Utley going yard. Hopefully they’ll both keep it up and we’ll win like 32-0.

  10. Jamie Says:

Utley denies it, but Gillick said he’s had a sore hip lately.

  11. Jamie Says:

I’m not watching the game on TV – I’m listening to it on the radio – but it sounds like Myers has pretty good control and poise tonight. Anyone?

  12. danny Says:

Myers looks great against the worst hitters in baseball

  13. danny Says:

Seriously, I think my UCF baseball team could out hit the Nats.

  14. NEPA Says:

Yea, he definitely looks better than last time out simply because he’s throwing strikes. But if this was any other team than the Nats they would probably be smoking some of these pitches.

  15. Brett Myers Says:

This is easier than Double A

  16. Jamie Says:

Nats or not, Myers seems to be efficient (only 51 pitches through 5 innings) and in control. Let’s hope this is the *new* Myers.

  17. Jamie Says:

It is sort of refreshing that Myers is inducing outs rather than trying to blow the batters away with his 72 mph fastball.

  18. Jamie Says:

Muts just took the lead 2-1.

  19. Joe Durbin Says:

It is hard to believe MLB can be almost a whole batter behind Gameday.
    How is anyone else’s?
    Is it just mine.

  20. Jamie Says:

Joe, are you watching on MLBTV.com, or listening on the radio? Where are you located?

  21. Gary B Says:

Muts will blow it with their pen like last night, Id love to see the fish take all three…

  22. Joe Durbin Says:

I am watching on the internet and live in Phoenix.

  23. Overlord Says:

When was the last time myers was making hitters (I know its the nationals, but still…) look silly in the 8th.

  24. Gary B Says:

here we go…where’s “dim the lights” durbin?

  25. NEPA Says:

What the hell is wrong with Utley’s defense this year? He’s shaky over there.

  26. Geoff Says:

    Damnit chase

  27. Gary B Says:

He’s a pretty boy now. Its a shame but he is…

  28. Joe Durbin Says:

I hate to say this, but our stix, apparantly thought 2 was enough.

  29. Geoff Says:

my other email address wouldnt post….

  30. Geoff Says:

myers was pitching wel tonight too

  31. Jamie Says:

If you’re watching on the internet, there’s your answer. They have a slight delay. It’s normal.

  32. Gary B Says:

Myers did his job, it would suck to rob him of that momentum…

  33. Geoff Says:

though a better team would smoke some of those myers fastballs

  34. Jamie Says:

Wow. John Lackey has a no hitter through 8 innings against the Red Sox. Only 1 walk keeps him from a perfect game.

  35. Brian Michael Says:

That was a nice play by Romero.

  36. Jamie Says:

    Durbin saves the day again!

  37. Gary B Says:

Geoff I agree, but you gotta start somewhere with Myers, and unfortunely the little league world series doesnt start for a while…

  38. Geoff Says:

Its a start. But does it prolong the inevitable return to the pen?

  39. Jamie Says:

If he pitches like he did tonight, yes.

  40. Gary B Says:

Yeah you might be right, they might have already made that decsion though by bringing Happ up. Hell, if ends up a win, I ll take it.

  41. NEPA Says:

    Big save here.

  42. Gary B Says:

Im on gameday whos in? Lights out?

  43. Geoff Says:

    yeah

  44. Jamie Says:

Yup, Lidge is on. 0-2 count, 1 down, bases clear

  45. NEPA Says:

Yea, Lidge. 1 out, none on. Full count to Kearns.

  46. Gary B Says:

fuck gameday, Im like a week behind…

  47. Jamie Says:

    2 down

  48. Jamie Says:

is Myers still pitching? Then yeah, you are. 0-2 count, 2 outs

  49. Jamie Says:

Muts just got a 2 run HR. THey are up 4-1 (Delgado)

  50. Gary B Says:

Yeah he just closed out the game to give the Phils the NL East…

  51. Jamie Says:

    Phils win!

  52. Jamie Says:

Gary, unless the Marlins pull their head out of their ass, we’re still going to be 1/2 game back.

  53. CT Says:

i hate to say it, but i think Myers deserves the Ashburn award tonight!

  54. Gary B Says:

Sorry Jamie, I was making a horrible reference to how far I was behind with gameday and was making fun of the fact that Myers closed out the Nats in 07 to win the east…

  55. Fred Says:

Foxsports.com is reporting the Phillies have traded Pat Burrell to the BoSox for Manny Ramirez straight up. Burrell and Ramirez have both waived their no-trade clauses and the Phillies have agreed to not pickup Manny’s club option for 2009 thereby allowing him to become a free agent after this season. There you go folks…our blockbuster deal has come to fruition.

  56. Geoff Says:

Bullshit. thats a fucking retarded trade. that doesnt make any sense. many isnt any better than burrell is THIS YEAR

  57. NC Jason Says:

Great pitching by Myers tonight. Now the real question – trade or keep?

  58. CT Says:

Fred, i call BS on that… i haven’t seen any sites confirm it yet

  59. Jamie Says:

Fred, that’s funny because it’s not on their site as of right now. Do you have a “Friend” in the front office like the O’s guy?

  60. Gary B Says:

Fred is rack addict reporting this from his momma’s double wide trailer…

  61. Jamie Says:

Gary, I get it now. Sorry – I didn’t get the pun the first time. Oh and Fred, if you’re going to make shit up, at least go with something that makes sense.

  62. GoodOneFred Says:

A Phillies official told ESPN.com Tuesday night persistent reports that the Phillies are pursuing Manny Ramirez are “false” and said the Phillies have “nothing doing” with the Red Sox involving Ramirez or any other player.

  63. Fred Says:

Makes perfect sense. Both players will be gone at year’s end. Burrell gets to the AL where he can play some field and DH. Manny gets reunited with his good buddy Charlie. Both have basically the same stats this year. This would serve the purpose of shaking up the team. As a side point, a motivated Manny is much more dangerous than a Burrell.

  64. Geoff Says:

not this year fred.. pointless trade look at stats

  65. ryan Says:

wow. looks like the real brett myers finally showed up to pitch tonight. very encouraging. if he pitches like that then the phillies may finally have the duel aces that they were hoping for. we’ll see if he can build off this start.

  66. Tim Malcolm Says:

No Manny trade. Not even close.

Also, good job by Myers tonight.

  67. danny Says:

That trade makes sense, but it’s not going to happen

  68. christopher Says:

real nice win. the nationals are always a pain for us for whatever reason, if we can two more wins like that i’ll be ecstatic.

  69. danny Says:

This trade’s going down… Manny’s gonna put this team on his shoulders.

  70. Geoff Says:

what the hell is wrong with you guys? youre not gaining anything tangible by getting manny. do you even read stats or pay attention? he has a good average, everything else is the same or WORSE than burrell AND ibanez AND bay. POINTLESS FUCKING TRADE

  71. Geoff Says:

if they did get manny theyd finis3rd or 4th in the division guaranteed

  72. Fred Says:

Manny and Burrell have basically the same stats and Manny has had an attitude all year while Burrell is in a contract year. A motivated Manny is way better than a motivated Burrell any day of the week. Not even close. And think what Manny would do in this bandbox of a ballpark.

  73. Chase Mutley Says:

    Mets win.

  74. Chase Mutley Says:

Burrell is a Phillie. Manny is not. I want to drop 20mil on Ben Sheets next year, not an 80 year old Manny Ramierz.. We have plenty of bats.

I’ve yet to decide which shitty ESPN-phrase is more annoying — referring to pitchers’ parks as “bandboxes” or the phrase “going yard.”

  75. Geoff Says:

    going yard is pretty lame

  76. danny Says:

    Baseball Tonight is just lame

  77. danny Says:

    [Comment From HankDaTank]
was this true?…Rumor has it Roy Halladay is not happy currently in Toronto, and Howard Eskin from 610 WIP stated that the Phillies inquired immediately to find that the price was atleast 3 top prospects. After backing off for a little bit, the Phillies offered SS Jason Donald, C Lou Marson, P JA Happ, and PTBNL. Toronto thought about the offer, and neglected, but said the offer was very close to what they wanted. He said that they wanted Fabio Castro added to the deal, but the Phillies expect Castro to be in the pen by the end of the year.

    7:25
News to me. Dont look for Halladay to be traded.

  78. danny Says:

I miss living in Philly, with Eskin’s BS gossip rumors making my car rides a joy

  79. Tim Malcolm Says:

I almost feel the need to post that Manny is a stupid move.

Come on guys. First, the guy flies by his own seat. He’s a loon. He’s not completely a team guy. He’s bad defensively. He doesn’t hustle all the time. All that alone makes him the worst fit possible for Philadelphia.

    Manny’s numbers: 20 HR, 68 RBI, .304 AVG, .400 OBP, .538 SLG
    Burrell’s numbers: 26 HR, 61 RBI, .277 AVG, .400 OBP, .585 SLG

That’s a lateral move. What does that do? Anything? Add in all that personality crap. Meanwhile, Burrell is one of the team leaders, an all-out good guy from what we see, a friend of practically everyone on the team and the one who desperately wants to be on a winner (judging by his play and attitude late last year).

Now, seriously, how the hell is Manny better than Burrell? Don’t make me post something.

  80. Chase Mutley Says:

    * hitters parks, excuse me.

  81. Geoff Says:

NOONE listens to eskin anymore. mike missanelli is on ESPN radio in the same timeslot, and thats what i and lots of other listen to. missanelli is crushing eskin in ratings

  82. Tim Malcolm Says:

Just to add: I’ve watched both Manny and Pat for a long, long time. At first I wasn’t a fan of Pat’s, but watching him play, giving his effort, seeing his attitude, I’m a HUGE fan of his. Manny? I loathe him. Is that directing my writing about this “trade idea”? Yes, sure. Manny, I will say, is a great player, one of the greatest ever. And he has won. But in no way is he a winner. Pat is a winner.

    I’m done. Yeesh.

  83. Fred Says:

Manny’s gone next year and so is Burrell. 20 mil on Sheets??? It’s quite obvious why you’re blogging and not working for a MLB team.

Also ‘bandbox’ was a term in use at least 50 years ago. But then again, most here weren’t born in the age of no CATV.

  84. Geoff Says:

silva got 11mm per year, oliver perez will get 11mm per year, sheets is worth 18-20mm per year

  85. Geoff Says:

    by those scales

  86. danny Says:

    Pineapple Express looks great, nerds

  87. Tim Malcolm Says:

danny: I agree, and I had to buy MIA’s “Paper Planes” because of it.

  88. NEPA Says:

My roommate played that constantly last year and I wanted to kill him for it. Then I found myself starting to enjoy it, weird song though.

  89. Chase Mutley Says:

Fred, Manny is slated to make 20 mil next year which is where that number came from. I wasn’t drawing up a contract. My point is that I would rather spend that kind of money on an ace and not a bat.

I’m 35 years old. I’ve been following baseball since I was 10 years old. In 25 years, I have NEVER heard more people refer to smaller fields as a “bandbox” as I have in the past few years. Sure, you can Google and find that etymology of the word dates to a John Updike piece from 1960 but you’re lying to yourself if you don’t think it recently has become a descriptor of choice for the blog / fantasy / weekend sports radio host.

  90. Griffin Says:

I hooked up with a chick in high school who played the tuba, I got all the “bandbox” I could handle.

  91. danny Says:

This ManRam thing is polarizing for sure. Goeff and Tim, you make similar, excellent points (in your respective styles).

  92. LetsGoMets! Says:

comparing Manny and Burrell is laughable. Manny is one of the top 5 right handed hitters of all time and has the most career post season homeruns of anyone all time, not to mention 2 world series rings and a world series MVP. If you guys dont think thats a good trade for your ball club than you havent been watching baseball the last 10 years. Manny was brilliant during last year’s playoffs.

  93. Phil Says:

Manny is always great in the playoffs. He’s incredible, but Burrell is having a better year and is 5 years younger.

  94. Chase Mutley Says:

LGM, you’re completely taking it out of context. No one says that Manny isn’t one of the best hitters to play the game. We’re saying it’s not an improvement to the team because, this year, right now, it’s a wash and we’re not going to resign him because we need starting pitching.

Unlike some teams I can think of, our outfielders are actually producing and this isn’t a glaring need for our pennant race.

  95. LetsGoMets! Says:

assuming both players put up similar numbers the rest of the way and the phillies make the playoffs. Who would you rather have playing left field for game 1? The answer is Manny, and since both players are free agents its almost irrelevant who is younger, both would sign elsewhere.

but your not making the playoffs so I guess its a moot point. At least the Soul won, even Phillie deserves a championship every quarter century

  96. Phil Says:

Wow, are you Nostradamus? The Muts are a .5 game up and they already made the playoffs?

  97. ryan Says:

are you guys really serious about acquiring manny ramirez? put down the crackpipe. there is absolutely no reason what so ever to even think for two seconds about picking up manny ramirez. over the past full year pat burrell has been much more productive player than manny. and you can’t play either of them in right field. so why are you even discussing this idea? just because he’s a big name and he might be available? its stupid as hell and this is a waste of time even discussing

  98. 1986 Says:

LetsGoMets! Time to brush up on your math, I was actually 22 years ago.

  99. Chase Mutley Says:

LGM, for argument’s sake Chipper Jones hits the market right now and the Braves want David Wright. Straight trade. Chipper Jones, one of the best hitters in the game period. Future HOF. David Wright isn’t even fit to wax Chipper’s eyebrows. Do you trade for him? Sure, you’ve got an “All-Star” third baseman who is younger, loves playing for your team and in your city, is a well-respected member of your clubhouse, makes less money and your bullpen looks like shit but you know, this is Chipper Jones we’re talking about. Dude hits the baseball like Doc hit the pipe. You know Chipper wouldn’t have stared at strike three like Beltran against the Cardinals. What do you do?

  100. Phil Says:

    haha good one Mutley.

  101. justin Says:

mutley… of course we wouldnt trade wright for chipper jones, to even bring that up is just retarded. that is like saying, lets trade chipper jones for chipper jones 10 years ago.

  102. fred Says:

Just to clarify, that was a different fred spreading manny rumors earlier. I don’t want people to start thinking i’m an idiot who spreads rumors that aren’t true, that aint cool. Pat the Bat is better than Manny anyway, and he dosn’t have an attitude problem. Also there’s a chance Burrell re-signs, Manny won’t.

  103. Chase Mutley Says:

    >> that is like saying, lets trade chipper jones for chipper jones 10 years ago.

    exactly!
