Gamenight: Phillies (57-49) At Nationals (38-68)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, July 30, 2008 06:21 PM

The Phillies continue their three-gamer in Washington, D.C. with a match against Tim Redding and the Nats.

Seeing Redd: Tim Redding is the No. 1 Phillie Killer, the B.A. Baracus of the team of guys who openly throttle us on a regular basis. He has pitched 13.1 shutout innings against the Phils this season, giving up eight hits while walking five. If the Phils decide to take pitches …

Iron Ryan: Ryan Howard has a consecutive game streak of 221 games, longest in baseball.

Flawless Final: After last night’s win, the Phillies are 46-0 when leading after eight innings.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (9-6) 3.76 ERA
Nationals: Tim Redding (7-5) 3.98 ERA

Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 88, cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Bruntlett/Ruiz/Moyer

Your gamenight beer: Affligem Blond is a Belgian beer, really my favorite nation for beer. It’s yellow/gold, very light and has somewhat of a banana lace smell. Can’t beat that combination. When facing a guy who has baffled you all season, you need to rethink strategy, take your time, focus on every little pitch. That makes Affligem Blond a nice beer for tonight. For a food pairing, I’d go with clams.

Go Phillies!

  1. Phil Says:

The Marlins are in strong talks about Manny. Isn’t that lovely?

  2. Mike T. Says:

Man, what a great day on this blog. A re-cap: First, the Phillies will not be making any significant moves prior the the deadline. Yes, they will sign junk in the waver pool. Second, CBP has great food, but it’s way too pricey. And yes, the profits from concessions and memorabilia is gigantic. Yet, the owners simply refuse to open the bank up for acquisitions. Any solution? As Geoff said, “Ed Snider/Comcast buys the team and opens up the war chest for the payroll.” Also, I think Tim actually deleted someones ridiculous post - that’s a step in the right direction, Tim. Next, have Brian write a program for a user registration. Lastly, Pudge Rodriguez for Kyle Farnsworth? Kyle Farnsworth? Are you fucking kidding me? Where were we on this?

  3. Phil Says:

Yeah, I would have given them Seanez and Condrey for fucking Pudge.

  4. Mike T. Says:

Tim Redding owns the Phils. We should just trade for him and end that whole thing.

  5. Phil Says:

I already suggested that Mike T. haha Trade for him and then trade him to some shitty AL team.

  6. Derek Says:

He would fit….all the marlins do is hit home runs and play bad defense….and all manny does is hit home runs and play bad defense

  7. Phil Says:

haha, yeah but Manny hits home runs better than them.

  8. Phil Says:

I just got unlazy and looked up Farnsworth stats. Seanez and Condrey are having a better year. WTF was Gillick thinking on that one?!

  9. Geoff Says:

you know where we were mike? pat gillick,AGAIN, fo rlike the 5th time in the past month or so, caught ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL AGAIN!!!!

let me reiterate: kyle farnsworth SUCKS! we have guys that suck to give the tigers, like geoff jenkins. the tigers wouldve taken carlos ruiz straight up and gillick, again, NOWHERE TO BE FOUND.

if youre “going for it” like montogmery said they were, arent you getting pudge rod to provide veteran leadership down the stretch?

  10. Geoff Says:

what does washington want for him? a few crappy prospects, ill do that.

i know thatll piss don off, but again, pat gillick sitting onhis ass doing nothing, which is exactly what hes told to do. nothing!

  11. Phil Says:

I am officially about to stop liking the Phillies since our FO sucks.

  12. Phil Says:

5:56pm: Baseball Prospectus’ John Perrotto has multiple baseball sources saying the Red Sox are on the verge of sending Ramirez to Florida for three players, including outfielder Mike Stanton.

  13. Phil Says:

Wow, they’re going to get Manny at a steal. I’d take Manny for a steal too.

  14. Geoff Says:

by the way, the florida marlins are about to get manny ramirez for a three man package.

i didnt want manny anyway, but its always nice NOW that the marlins have him, hell kill us when we play them down the stretch.

i wanted holliday, they say no, i want jason bay/raul ibanez, they say no. well what do you get? some waived piece of trash in august? hahahaha

they know that the fans will be pissed if they sit on their ass and theyll still do it because they know youll sitll come to the ballpark, buy their aramark food and stand in line for 4 innings just to get a bucket of crab fries. ahahahaha

  15. Mike T. Says:

Manny to Florida doesn’t bother me. They need pitching more than we do - they’ll fall off at any moment.

  16. phils Says:

well that sucks but the marlins need pitchng more then manny.

  17. Geoff Says:

i want to see jimmy rollins get pulled in the middle of the game and told on tv that hes been traded. priceless.

at this point, im desperate for them to get roy halladay, you know what? fuck it

carlos carrasco, shane victorino, jason donald, antonio bastardo, fabio castro, BOOM. get me roy halladay i dont care what it costs. i wouldnt even be pissed if they traded lou marson, yes, thats a flip flop, but i dont care because its ROY HALLADAY. who cares? you want to win? show me. otherwise im accuring the front office of criminal theft.

  18. Geoff Says:

i want to win something. if theyre not going to go for it then trade everyone off for prospects again. im tired of this fucking shit

  19. Rob Cowie Says:

We have been kicking around having those viewers who wish to post comments to register with the site. Though, at the present time, we are going to keep the posting requirement as is. A few idiots shouldn’t deter those who enjoy reading/posting here at Philliesnation.

Also, there are only two spots left for our trip to D.C. So, if you’d like to go purchase your spots now!!!

    Go Phils!

  20. phils Says:

thats why i love the flyers they go for it every year and not do anything when they need something.

  21. Rich Harden Says:

I hate Pat Gillick, he isnt as active in the market as he should be. Way too conservative for a team going for it all.

I like Bruntlett starting at third over Dobbs.

Moyer is going to rock these guys to sleep.

    Howard goes yard.

    Phils win 8-3.

Manny to Florida would be intense. If that happens I can guarantee that the Mets would push real hard for Bay and then we stay put or something. But yet we would still win the division IMO. One player can only do so much. I was reading today that Bartolo Colon won 10 games after the trade deadline for the Expos way back when but they finished an additional half game back to end the year.

  22. Geoff Says:

i love the flyers more than any team. the phillies are a close second. i played hockey since age 5, played baseball for a few years but im getting back into playing it again now. i was raised on teh flyers and that owners does NOT tolerate failure. sure they havent won in ages but they go for it all the time. that team is SOLID going forward and i cant wait.

dont ou wish ed snider owned the phillies? that guy doesnt f around. awesome pro sports owner. he hates being embarrassed. they finished last, the flyers, then, BOOM, turnaround all the way to the final 4 this year, fired/gutted the front office and now theyre ready to roll.

  23. Phil Says:

If Snider owned the Phillies right now we would be WS favorites.

  24. Phil Says:

I hope the Phillies have been watching extensive video on him for the past few days.

  25. phils Says:

snider is the best owner in the history of philly peroid.

  26. Geoff Says:

the rays pirates talks for bay stalled today, now its time to swoop in there:

carlos carrasco, antonio bastardo, jason donald, fabio castro for jason bay and john grabow

  27. Phil Says:

Yes, I just extended my MLB beat the streak to 7 games! haha I picked Victorino to get a hit tonight!

  28. Phil Says:

Geoff, it’s not happening. Gillick is too dumb.

  29. Geoff Says:

at this point, who cares? do we know these prospects are going to pan out? i think marson will but i have no idea about the rest of them after recent developments.

someone in that FO has to grow some balls and say, you know what? lets go for it

  30. Jamie Says:

Werth for Trever Miller or JP Howell? I think not. If Colorado wants several prospects for Brian Fuentes, we should be able to get MUCH more value for Werth.

  31. Geoff Says:

i know it wont happen but this is why the phillies fail like every year, n balls, dont want to spend money, etc. im going to check developments of trade activity….

  32. phils Says:

the redsox might have intrest in werth if they deal manny and they have some good pitching to give us in there farm.

  33. Phil Says:

This trade deadline is garbage. We’re going to end up with only Joe fucking Blanton while the Angels get Teixera(not that we needed him), the Yankees get Pudge, Nady, and Marte(needed all 3), and the Marlins possibly get Manny. WTF GILLICK!

  34. Phil Says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!! They’re hitting Redding!

  35. Phil Says:

Too bad this is probably the only inning they will, and they won’t score any runs.

  36. phils Says:

com on the yankees always get good players and the marlins are renting manny the fish have no pitching so im not concernd ther.

  37. Phil Says:

The Fish have 4 #2’s…no definitive ace. PAT THE BAT!!! 2-0!!!

  38. phils Says:

    we have a 1.5 in hamels and 4 #3

  39. Phil Says:

4 #3’s are you serious? And Hamels is a #1

Get off my team Jenkins. Way to kill a rally.

  40. phils Says:

rohdes to flordia could be also comming tommrow along with gregg zaun

  41. Phil Says:

We have 4#4’s and 1 of those #4’s has the potential to be a #2 and one of them is pitching like a #2.

  42. Phil Says:

Marlins are having a win now attitude, unlike the Phillies.

  43. Phil Says:

    Mets are already winning.

  44. Geoff Says:

hamels is a 1.5, exactly, hes too mortal but hes only 25 so hell get better. then we have two numbers 5s and two numbers 4’s in the current rotation

  45. phils Says:

the fish will hang around but they wont go anywhere

  46. Phil Says:

    Hamels is 24

  47. Phil Says:

    Wow, already…that’s nice.

  48. phils Says:

shit willie harris are u kiding me

  49. Geoff Says:

that means im allowed to call hamels a kid because hes a year younger than me.

  50. Phil Says:

6:24pm: MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro is hearing about a three-way deal that would also send Jason Bay to the Red Sox.

  51. Phil Says:

Hamels is exactly 2 days older than me, so I can’t call him a kid I guess.

  52. Phil Says:

Pat Gillick should be fired right now for letting all of this happen.

  53. Geoff Says:

three way deal: bay to the red sox as part of the manny deal? mlbtr

when i lived in pittsburgh, i called jason bay to the red sox THREE years ago. how about that?

  54. Phil Says:

If I were the Marlins I’d just snub the Sox and get Bay.

  55. Geoff Says:

don..you see why we hate gillick? he sits around and allows teams to make good deals for clutch players while he does nothing. sometimes hell even come out and say: no, we have no interest in kyle lohse anymore, sorry. etc

  56. Phil Says:

Wow, Moyer imploded…1st time in like what, 10 games?

  57. phils Says:

    o god moyers done

  58. Phil Says:

Lovely. We will lose this game. Maybe it would be a tie game if that douche bag Jenkins didn’t kill a rally.

  59. Geoff Says:

ahaha, moyers collapse starts right now. like clockwork. get him out of there right now…JA Happ takes his spot in the rotation, make him retire immediately and trade for roy halladay

  60. Phil Says:

Geoff, you’re being a dick. Hamels imploded the other day. Let’s trade him for a bag of balls.

  61. old men can't pitch Says:

    wow moyer is good!

  62. Phil Says:

I love how Moyer has 10 incredible outings in a row and now everyone is saying make him retire and that he can’t pitch.

  63. Geoff Says:

hes groowing meatballs right over there plate

  64. Geoff Says:

hamels is 24. that, kid, is allowed time to develop. moyers had his time, now its time to call him coach

  65. Phil Says:

Yeah, and when was the last time you’ve seen him do that this season? The beginning of May? Come on dude…it happens sometimes. I’m sure Halladay, Lincecum, Volquez, etc. have done that in a game or 2 this season. Halladay let up 7 to the Cubs in 3 innings. It’s bound to happen here and there. Moyer has been pitching great for us this year.

  66. Geoff Says:

    im partially joking. partially.

  67. Jamie Says:

I agree with Phil. It’s ridiculous when fans react and come up with trades based on emotions rather than intellect. Trade everyone, fire everyone, retire everyone. They can’t be perfect all the time, and even *stars* have bad years/streaks. It makes no sense to trade away the farm or roster for a two month rent-a-player. Oh, and for those who say “we’ll get two #1 draft picks out of it” think about that for a second. How long before those #1’s are major league ready, and we all know the percentages aren’t very good that they will even reach the majors.

  68. Phil Says:

RUIZ GOT A HIT HOLY SHIT!

  69. old men can't pitch Says:

comparing moyer to halladay is plain stupid

  70. Geoff Says:

both of these pitchers canceled each others hexing powers out, so there gonna be some offense tonight

  71. NEPA Says:

Ruiz single, this calls for a celebration. Lou Marson who?

  72. Phil Says:

Okay Rollins, step it up right here.

  73. Phil Says:

I wasn’t comparing Moyer to Halladay. I was saying every pitcher implodes. I’m sure you’re a Muts fan. Look at your old man pitcher. Moyer is having a MUCH better year than that broken down has been.

  74. Jamie Says:

Phil, I was pickin’ up what you were puttin’ down, and I agree.

  75. Geoff Says:

id actuallly wait to pull jimmy to tell him hes traded until hes at the plate, just to humilate him and teach this team a lesson

  76. old men can't pitch Says:

I am a Phillies fan and have been since the mid 70s. But I call it like i see it. Why do you accuse everyone of being a Met fan if they disagree with you? That is a piss poor defensive arguement.

  77. old men can't pitch Says:

wow, a scoreless inning! i smell a longterm contract brewing

  78. phils Says:

hamels is not hurt with a fracture in his elbow his velocity would have droped along with his arm slot.

  79. Phil Says:

old men can’t pitch, you’re saying Moyer sucks when he’s been solid this year. Only Muts fans do that usually. Well, Muts fans and Geoff.

  80. Rick Says:

Jeez guys. . . There’s a lot of game left. Remember last weekend??? Who has the better bullpen? They’re the friggin’ Expos for God Sake!

BTW - Heard something on Eskin today about a Hamels injury? Likely you guys have been posting about this already and I missed it. Anyone know anything? Anyone???? Buller??? Buller???

  81. old men can't pitch Says:

show me where i said “moyer sucks.” i said comparing moyer to halladay is stupid. if that has gotten you up in arms, then you need to remove your rose colored glasses, my phriend

  82. Phil Says:

I’m sure it’s just to bail Hamels out for his piss poor performance the other night. He’s not injured.

  83. Phil Says:

I never compared Moyer to Halladay. Your avatar says it all though. Old men can’t pitch to me=Jamie Moyer sucks. Maybe I shouldn’t assume.

  84. Geoff Says:

whered that come from about hamels?

  85. Don M Says:

SUP GIRLS… here is the ESPN link to the story about the Pudge trade.. and some quotes from it that make sense!

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3511535

Farnsworth is 1-2 with a 3.65 ERA this season. Farnsworth pitched for the Tigers for the first four months of 2005, compiling a 2.32 ERA in 46 games before he was traded to the Braves at the trading deadline.

“Another team wants me. That’s the way I look at it,” he said. ” They [the Tigers] know my reputation. They know what type of person I am.”

The departure of Farnsworth creates a void in the eighth inning for the Yankees. When Joba Chamberlain moved into the starting rotation and gave up that role, Farnsworth eventually stepped in and had been effective.

“He’s been throwing the ball great and it’s great to see the things he’s done to make himself better, but it’s a business and you have to understand that,” Chamberlain said.

Tigers slugger Gary Sheffield said the trade made sense to both sides.

“This is a surprise to people if they don’t know the situations of the players,” he said. “Both teams get better by this, and that’s what a trade is supposed to be all about.”

Who were the Tigers going to take from the Phillies… while at the same time we’re trying to add guys to our bullpen to make it stronger?? Just wondering…

  86. old men can't pitch Says:

it’s an embellishmnet, that i’ll agree with. and maybe i assumed when i read “Halladay let up 7 to the Cubs in 3 innings. It’s bound to happen here and there. Moyer has been pitching great for us this year.” to me, that sounds like you’re saying moyer is on par with halladay, which even you can understand is untruthful

  87. Phil Says:

We need a lefty to make our pen stronger, Don. Seanez and Condrey are expendable.

  88. Don M Says:

Phil im with you though… Geoff has been saying all year the Moyer should, and will retire… in the meantime, he’s the 2nd best pitcher we have. When other pitchers get rocked its no big deal, because people realize that not everyone has their best stuff every night.

He pitches nasty, gets no run support…then gives up some early runs in a game and people are calling phor his head..

  89. J-Man Says:

The Marlins getting Manny?I guess Pat Gillick wants the Phils to lose this year.

  90. Phil Says:

Yeah, I’m not dumb. Moyer in his prime wasn’t as good as Halladay. What I was trying to prove is that even the best pitchers in the game get lit up from time to time. Of course it will happen to Moyer too.

  91. Geoff Says:

i was JOKING, cant you tell?

  92. Geoff Says:

it means don, that your man-love-man-crush-man-love pat gillick got caught asleep again

  93. Phil Says:

I wouldn’t bash Moyer if he had a 5.00 ERA. The guy is 45, he helps our young guys, and he keeps us in ballgames. Even last year he kept us in the game. Moyer has been great for us this year, and it’s one of my few qualms with Geoff as a poster. Other than his beef with Moyer he’s one of my favorite posters on this site.

  94. Phil Says:

haha Flores leads the Nats with 44 RBI’s. That’s sad. Victorino is so great defensively. The phlyin Hawaiian fan club is great too.

  95. Geoff Says:

i respoect moyer a lot but people give his pitching a pass because of that respect. he gives up 5 runs in 3 innings one night? eh no big deal, its jamie…whaaaaaaaat? the man just gave up 5 runs (not tonight, as an example) no excuses apply

  96. Phil Says:

    FISH TIED IT UP!

  97. Rick Says:

Geoff - Howard Eskin said today that Hamels might have a fracture in his elbow. I believe his source was multiple scouts. Who knows the validity of it? I was just wondering if anyone heard anything else about it.

  98. Geoff Says:

you never know with eskin…could be true, if it is… roy hallday

  99. Phil Says:

Yeah, I think if Hamels goes down Gillick will have to go after Halladay.

  100. old men can't pitch Says:

be careful what you wish for, Phil. The Marlins may be the real players in the NL East, not the Mets. You really want to cheer for them to win?

  101. Don M Says:

Geoff. you are obviously a closet homosexual.

Who were the Phillies going to trade to get Pudge in return? you forgot to answer that as you were typing how much I

  102. Don M Says:

Phuck the Marlins.. they are smoke and mirrors this year

  103. Phil Says:

I already answered it for you Don M.

  104. Phil Says:

If the Muts lose and we win we’re back in 1st at least.

  105. Don M Says:

If Hamels has a fractured elbow.. this season is in the shitter…. Adding a pitcher to replace him will still make you a pitcher-short heading into the postseason

  106. Jeff Says:

the washington nationals should never score 3 runs in an inning…or prolly a game for that matter.

with that said if the phils can’t score 4 off the nationals then they don’t deserve to win…it is the nationals

  107. Phil Says:

I wish that ball would have hit his fucking hand. IT’s the only way he would have gotten on base.

  108. old men can't pitch Says:

and Don, you don’t think the Mets are, with Carlos Delgado and Fernando Tatis hitting .400 in July, or Mike Pelfrey pitching like Tom Seaver?

  109. Geoff Says:

obviously not…the point is the tigers GAVE HIM AWAY. kyle farnsworth is HORRIBLE. id have gvien them ruiz in a flash, or even a few prospects. mid-level prospects because they GAVE Him away

  110. Don M Says:

Clay Condrey and Rudy Seanez are not 8th inning setup men… Farnsworth ain’t great, but I sure wouldn’t mind having him on the phillies.

And if they would have taken those guys, im sure we would be watching Pudge in Pinstripes tomrw night

  111. Phil Says:

Pelfrey pitching like Tom Seaver. hahaha I like the analogy. Yeah, Tatis and Pelfrey will not carry that team the rest of the year. The Marlins will fail because of their defense and inabilit to hit anything but a home run. Jenkins got a hit. Wow.

  112. Jeff Says:

so jenkins just got a hit…i almost passed out.

which deserves more of a celebration jenkins with a hit or ruiz?? haha

  113. old men can't pitch Says:

    and I agree with Jeff

  114. Phil Says:

I’m sure Gillick didn’t even pick up the phone to call.

  115. Geoff Says:

tatis needs to be tested again

  116. Phil Says:

Jenkins with a hit. More is expected of him than Ruiz.

  117. Phil Says:

    Ugh. This offense is horrible.

  118. Phil Says:

I bet you Pat Gillick isn’t making moves because he has a horrible cell phone plan and doesn’t want to use up all of his minutes.

  119. old men can't pitch Says:

I think we have to show more respect to the Marlins. No one saw them coming in 2003 and look what happened. Now they have Johnson back, they have Anibal Sanchez coming back, Olsen and Nolasco have been very good, and the offense scores a ton. I think they’ll be in it until the end

  120. Rick Says:

I think if Cole goes down, we finish 500. And Eskin did make a point to state that it was in Hamels throwing arm elbow too. We’ll just have to see if anything more comes up about it. Stupid MASN on mlb.tv sux!

  121. Phil Says:

Yeah, their pitching is better than anyone is willing to get them credit for. They have 4 #2’s.

  122. Don M Says:

I think the Mets blow too..

Geoff… YOU and I would gladly give them shitty prospects for the Hall-of-Fame catcher… but that doesn’t mean thats what the Tigers want in return..

When everyone in their organization realizes that it was a good trade “for them” then what can we say about it. To get Pudge, we would have had to give them bullpen pieces, meanwhile, we’re trying to strenthen our bullpen before the deadline, not give some of it away..

  123. old men can't pitch Says:

If the Marlins win tonight, they show they are the true players on the NL East. They went to Chicago and held their own, and now could take 2 of 3 from the Mets. Meantime they’ve beaten us plenty and we can’t beat the Mets. Time to show credit where credit is due.

  124. Geoff Says:

thats what they got in return….shit

    kyle farnsworth is shit

  125. old men can't pitch Says:

and now the Fish have a 3-1 lead. I’m telling you guys, watch out for these Marlins.

  126. Don M Says:

Their entire pitching staff is guys that are FULL OF POTENTIAL… none of them have pitched in a playoff race or a big game before.

I think the Marlins finish 10 games out of 1st place in the East.. and I think the Phillies (as long as someone is kidding about Hamels) and the Mets battle to the end, but the Mets bullpen is terrible

  127. Phil Says:

The Marlins have nothing to lose, that’s why they’re playing their hearts out. They’re a bunch of kids.

  128. Don M Says:

appearantly Geoff hates Kyle Farnsworth, and the old man hater, loves the fish

  129. Phil Says:

Yeah, but real baseball starts on August 1st ,which Don has pretty much already pointed out. The Phillies are kings at playing down the stretch.

  130. Jamie Says:

Marlins just took the lead 3-1. Both Willingham and Hermida are still in the lineup for all you “Manny trade” folks.

  131. Jeff Says:

who enjoyed dan uggla’s showing in the all star game? and when i say showing i mean worse fielding that ryan howard. besides blowing the game for the nl in the field and at the plate i thought it was hilarious

  132. old men can't pitch Says:

C’mon, Don. Experience isn’t the only thing that makes a team a winner. You could criticize the Marlins the same way in 2003 but they went on to beat the Yankees to win it all. It’s going to be August in 2 days and the Marlins are still right in the thcik of things. If they haven’t faded yet, I don’t think they’re going to. This team is for real and it’s time to take notice.

  133. Fred Says:

I guess this trade proves teams can be BUYERS and SELLERS in the same trade.

  134. Don M Says:

Geoff at some point you need to come the realization that not every trade that another team makes, is the one that your team should have made.

Carlos Ruiz is not the problem this year… and the Phillies have stated over and over that they want to improve the bullpen which, stay with me here, is CRUCIAL to late-season success..

So to weaken what you are trying to strengthen would not be a smart move for this team… but by all means, tell me how so-and-so sucks and Gillick was sleeping or something

  135. Jamie Says:

    Er…I mean 4-1 with a runner on 2nd.

  136. old men can't pitch Says:

The Phillies are kings of playing down the stretch, because of one year Phil?

  137. Jamie Says:

Man, I can’t keep up with the Fish. Josh Johnson just doubled to help his own cause 5-1 Marlins with 2 out and a runner on 2nd.

  138. Don M Says:

Yankees gained a catcher which they needed…. but have no 8th inning setup man … which is going to hurt them since their pitching sucks balls

  139. Jeff Says:

phils always played well down the stretch…just most years they were so far behind they couldn’t catch up to the division or wild card leader. this is gonna be a fun race to watch. marlins can’t field, mets have no bullpen, phils have a hole in the rotation and an inconsistent lineup but i still think they have the best lineup in the division

  140. Geoff Says:

i realize that don. thts obvious but i see opportunities squandered regularly by pat gillick and this FO

  141. Rick Says:

holy shnikees! Another hit by Ruiz!

  142. Geoff Says:

what is ed wade doing? getting latroy hawkins? why. hahahha

  143. old men can't pitch Says:

it’s going to come down to which team wants it more, and i have a hard time believing any team is going to want it more than the upstart, exuberant Marlins. don’t we knock the Phillies for being so complacent this year? that’s not exactly the type of characteristic a team needs to win a division.

  144. Jamie Says:

Holy shit! Two singles in one game for Ruiz? What the hell got into him?

  145. Don M Says:

Old Man with his, loose skin, and old balls…gross…

I think in something like each of the past 3 seasons, the phillies have had the best “2nd half” record.. sounds like they have been pretty good at playing down the stretch to me.

and everyone respects what the marlins do year in and year out.. but you have to admit that they don’t have big game experience, and that COULD hurt them as the pressure starts to mount

  146. danny Says:

    Come on J Roll

  147. Jeff Says:

thats the j-roll we need to see more of

  148. danny Says:

He’s a double machine in the clutch

  149. phils Says:

    that was nice jroll

  150. Don M Says:

are you once again talking about the “opportunities” that were Trading the farm for the CC Sabathia rental… or for the injury-prone Harden, who has pitched GREAT so far, but has helped the Cubs win how many so far?

  151. NEPA Says:

Yea, great piece of hitting there. They need to make this at least 5-3 at this point. Those 2 baserunners, at least, need to make their way home. This coupled with the Mets getting beat up made for a good ten minutes or so.

  152. Rick Says:

J-Roll with a 2b… Geoff should they tell him now or during his next at-bat?

  153. old men can't pitch Says:

well, if that’s the case, Don, the Phils better start picking it up - especially against the Mets and Marlins, you we’re a combined 8-14 against this year.

  154. Geoff Says:

cc sabathia has 3 complete games in a month and a half for a surging team

  155. Geoff Says:

they should come and PULL HIM OFF THE BASEPADS. send mike cervenak out there to tell him and replace him.

  156. Geoff Says:

shane victorino is off the trade hook. hes can stay

  157. NEPA Says:

That’s what I’m talking about. Beautiful.

  158. danny Says:

Nice hitting, damn, I’m falling in love all over again..

  159. Jamie Says:

that double by J-Roll doesn’t count - Geoff traded him last at-bat. Runners back to their respective bases…

  160. Jeff Says:

    great hitting by victorino!!

that throw by millidge shows y this is the washington nationals…that was more lo duca’s fault though

  161. danny Says:

What happened to Paul Lo Duca?

  162. CZ Says:

    Hooooowaaaaaahh!

  163. danny Says:

    WHAT A BOMB!

  164. Jamie Says:

Nice to see Chase back. Word.

  165. Geoff Says:

    YES!

  166. Jeff Says:

jeez it looked like a pop fly…that ball just traveled

  167. NEPA Says:

Wow they are carrying tonight. It didn’t seem like T-Mac or Milledge thought that was getting out and it just kept going. Great hitting by the Phils, didn’t see this coming at all.

  168. Julie Says:

you’re not so tough anymore, Tim Redding

  169. Jamie Says:

On second thought, although it’s nice to see Chase back, it’s nice to see 1st place back, eh fellas?

  170. old men can't pitch Says:

    who needs Manny?

  171. Rick Says:

HAHA!!! That was probably your funniest post ever, Geoff. You should just stop now while you’re ahead.

Well so much for the phillie killer Tim Redding. Way to go Utley! I guess that cortisone shot is working wonders???

  172. Jeff Says:

nothing like playing the nationals to break a slump.

a sweep here would be nice…get some momentum and make a run. the phils are certainly capable of stringing a bunch of wins together

  173. danny Says:

Manny: “The Red Sox don’t deserve a player like me.”

  174. Jamie Says:

Jeff you’re right. They could put quite a string together in the next few weeks. They face: @STL (3); home against FLA (3) & PIT (3), on the road against LAD (4) & SD (3) before they’re back home against these pesky Nats (3), LAD (4) & Muts (2).

  175. Rick Says:

I think Jenkins is one of those guys that needs 20-25 ABs a week to be a consistent hitter. He is obviously not suited for a platoon. Have Werth’s numbers versus righties really been that bad?

  176. Jamie Says:

Just when you thought Manny was a complete arrogant dick, he makes a comment like that. Lovely. I guess he may be moved yet, although Hermida and Willingham are still in the game. BTW, everything is “fine” with Cole Hamels’ elbow according to the announcers.

  177. danny Says:

    Manny cracks me up.

  178. Geoff Says:

by “fine” they mean pat gillick actually has to get up on his ass and is panicking right now trying to get roy halladay. but then, the owners walk into his office and say, whooooooooa, you WILL give up carlos carrasco for paul byrd. and thats what hell do.

  179. Jamie Says:

We end the regular season going to Atlanta (3) and Florida (3), and then head home against Atlanta (3) and Nationals (3). Out of 12 games, I’d like to think we can take 9 or 10 of them.

  180. NEPA Says:

    ^^^
Just when you thought Manny was a complete arrogant dick, he makes a comment like that… AND TOTALLY REDEEMS HIMSELF!

Hopefully someone knows what I’m gettin at.

  181. Geoff Says:

    duimb and dumber

  182. NEPA Says:

    Haha, nicely done Geoff.

  183. Rick Says:

Stupid mlb.tv! I don’t get the CSN feed dammit! I do somewhat agree with what he said about Pedro and Nomar though. The Sox seem to tarnish a player’s image when they no longer want them. It seems like they do it to turn the fans against the player so there isn’t public outcry when they get rid of them.

  184. Jeff Says:

we have a lot of games vs the nl west the rest of the year and the nl west is not very good. considering one team is over 500…and that’s by 2 games i think in arizona. phils have the schedule to have a great run to end the year. we gotta beat the marlins though

  185. Jamie Says:

they’ll probably pinch hit for Moyer here, do you think they go with Happ here, or Durbin?

  186. Geoff Says:

    happ..cant let him get rusty

  187. danny Says:

    Why PH for him now?

  188. danny Says:

The Angles are smashing the Sox… God I love that.

  189. Geoff Says:

    becausehes old

  190. Jamie Says:

well, his spot was due and he’d already thrown 83 pitches. I guess they want him to go one more.

  191. NEPA Says:

    Pat the bat baby.

  192. Jamie Says:

that was a quick and efficient inning for Moyer. He may be able to go one more, but the heat and humidity will be the deciding factor.

  193. Jamie Says:

Mets just got a 3 run HR. It’s still 5-4 Marlins in the top of the 7th

  194. Rick Says:

WTF? Why pull Burrell in the double switch? Why not Jenkins? Doesn’t make sense! Burrell just had an assist last inning.

  195. danny Says:

Has the defensive switch ever paid off?

  196. Jamie Says:

God, these are the only kind of games Ryan Madson should be allowed to pitch in - ones where we have big leads. The guy is WAAAAYYYY overrated. He seems to give up runs when we need him to just hold on.

  197. danny Says:

He should have gotten out of that- how is that not an error?

  198. Jamie Says:

What, Werth (our defensive replacement) falling down?

  199. Tim Malcolm Says:

This is the second of the two Ryan Madson “I forgot how to get guys out” stints.

  200. danny Says:

“When they bunt the seventh place hitter [in the 8th inning] it tells you they are going to pinch hit for the pitcher.”

-Don Sutton, Nationals announcer, mlb.tv, 9:37 pm, July 30, 2008.

  201. Jamie Says:

Dan Uggla 2 run HR…Marlins 7-4. And go buy yourself a lotto ticket - Ruiz and Jenkins each with two hits IN THE SAME GAME!!!

  202. danny Says:

    UGGLA HOMERS!

  203. Jamie Says:

Brilliant informative piece by Don Sutton. He apparently sucks as much today as he did with those idiots at TBS in the years past. OH, and Tim I hope it’s the last of his “forgot how to get guys out” stints!

  204. Jamie Says:

What’s up with Bruntlett doing his best Ruiz impersonation tonight (2 x GIDP)?

  205. danny Says:

He’s had a bunch of them tonight Jamie… that might not have been the best. I just couldn’t take anymore without sharing the love.

The Nats broadcast is second rate. Maybe, third rate.

  206. Jamie Says:

Danny, that’s some good stuff. I appreciate a good chuckle now and again, especially if it comes at the Muts ‘expense.

Speaking of which, I fall in love with the Muts bullpen more and more every day…

  207. Chase Mutley Says:

Joe Smith is my favorite Met.

  208. danny Says:

    LOL

  209. Jamie Says:

Chase, he’s my favorite Met right now too. Tomorrow it will be Heilman, I’m thinking.

  210. Jamie Says:

Kevin Gregg is trying to blow it…3 consecutive singles with two outs. Marlins 7-5 with runners on 1st and 2nd.

  211. Geoff Says:

and the red sox get jason bay and john grabow, manny to the marlins plus cash, hermida and 4 prospects ot the pirates.

    asleep at the wheel AGAIN

  212. Jamie Says:

    Mets lose! Hello 1st place!

  213. Fred Says:

They pulled Burrell because he’s on his way to Boston.

  214. CZ Says:

Where are those Muts trolls tonight??!?? So confusing…

  215. Chase Mutley Says:

    1st place!

  216. Jamie Says:

Geoff, where are you seeing that?

  217. Geoff Says:

    mlbtr

  218. Jamie Says:

oh, well, then…it’s bullshit. gammons and others as of a minute or two ago said it’s unlikely because the marlins want boston to give up a prospect along with manny.

  219. NEPA Says:

I don’t believe any of that shit until its completely finalized.

  220. Geoff Says:

and you think pat gillick is going to do ANYTHING?
