Gillick: “We’ve Got To Start Scoring More Runs”
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, July 29, 2008 10:37 AM
Paul Hagen has a Q&A with GM Pat Gillick.
Nothing too groundbreaking coming out of it, with Gillick mostly toeing the company line. He does remind us Chase Utley is a little injured, which Utley still denies.
At the end Hagen asks him about his legacy, leading to a bit on the offense:
Q. What do the Phillies have to do this year for you to feel good about your 3 years here?
A. You’d like to go to the World Series. We’d love to go to the World Series, and that’s the goal. But the first step is to get into the playoffs. So hopefully we can reach the first goal of getting into the playoffs and then we can go deeper than we did last year and get to the Series.
But we’ve got to get our guys going and we’ve got to start scoring some more runs. If we don’t score more runs, it’s going to be difficult for us.
Q. Do you think you can score more runs with the guys you have here now?
A. I think we can get them going. We were scoring runs last year and I don’t think there’s any reason we can’t score them this year. We’ve just got to get them going, that’s all.
I think Gillick is clearly displeased by his offense’s performance. And judging by the team’s bold push for Matt Holliday and recent discussions with the Red Sox for Manny Ramirez, it seems the team is really trying to upgrade any way they can. Don’t be surprised if the Phils make a solid move for an offensive player (could a Jason Bay/John Grabow package deal be in the works?) before the deadline.

given whats realistically out there, ill take a jason bay in right field and bring someone like grabow on board.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:11 am
I’d like to see them go after Pudge.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:12 am
i heard a rumor, unfounded but interesting. ruiz and a mid-level prospect for bengie molina from SF.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:15 am
I highly doubt anything happens before the deadline…I think we’re stuck with what we got, and I say “stuck” in the sense that we have a team only 1 gm out of 1st place with August 1 looming.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:15 am
That’s not happening…if it did that would rule, but it’s not happening. I still want Ruiz as a back up and to be around to catch Cole Hamels. They work really well together.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:15 am
we need a bat….either bay or molina IDC do it
July 29th, 2008 at 11:16 am
We’re .5 games out of 1st place.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:17 am
The only positions we can upgrade are 3B, and that’s if you can actually find someone better than Feliz which I doubt you can, C, and possibly RF, although I think Werth should just be our everyday RF.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:17 am
we need an outfield bat more than a catcher. marson will be our guy next year but there are too many other problems to deal with right now to add the catcher thing to it now.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Id like to force werth and victorino into a platoon and get an everyday RF, that adds real depth. jenkins would be the 5th guy because wed be stuck with him and So would go.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Molina would be great to have. The guy might be the slowest runner in the league (Burrell would be happy to have him on the team to make him look fast), but he freekin’ rakes! When the Phils play the Giants and he comes up with a runner on I keep waiting for the GDIP, but Molina always seems to find a gap and consistantly hits line drives. This is the first I have heard his name come up, but the more I think about it the more I like it. Bay would be great too. Just do SOMETHING to shake it up and show the team and the fans you are serious about getting to the post-season and WINNING.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:20 am
Whoooaaaa, where’d the Myers article go? So trippy.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Victorino has proven he’s an everyday player. You don’t need to platoon him with Werth. I think Werth can prove he’s an everyday player too if he was given the opportunity. Last year he was incredible down the stretch. That guy was king clutch. I think he would be this year as well. I don’t really know what you can upgrade. RF potentially, CF potentially, 3B, and C. Actually, you could upgrade SS.
Any word on who is filling in for Eaton’s slot in the rotation?
July 29th, 2008 at 11:24 am
I just want to add an outfielder whos legit. that way everyone gets better. werth still cant hit righties well enough to be everyday. he goes on hot streaks though where he can play for liek 2 weeks and rake, then he goes unnoticeable for a week or so.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:26 am
i actually hope the mets get manny, because he WILL implode their team overnight. the manager will lose control again and theyll bottom out in like 3 weeks time. just watch.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:28 am
A.J. Burnett allowed one unearned in seven innings to defeat the Rays on Monday night.
He walked four, but he struck out ten and allowed just six hits. He had a couple of tough starts to begin the month, but he’s settled down nicely since. Maybe he’s inspired by the chance to get out of Toronto. The victory was Burnett’s twelfth of the season, tying a career high.
Go get Burnett NOW!!!
July 29th, 2008 at 11:30 am
the blue jays issued a statement yesterday saying they will not trade him before the deadline but may trade him in august if he clears waivers. same with arroyo, the reds are keeping him (good, because he sucks).
July 29th, 2008 at 11:30 am
burnetts not coming…they wouldnt have gotton blanton if they had plans of burnett still
July 29th, 2008 at 11:31 am
its a reliever or OF…hopefully package with bay thatd beeee realllllllll nice…4 guys over 20 bangers
July 29th, 2008 at 11:33 am
i doubt they get another starter thi syear. we can hope for ben sheets next year. but the best we can hope for in terms of starting ptiching, is that WHEN myers tanks, happ explodes onto the scene, cementa his palce in the roataion, and wins like 7 or 8 of his remaining starts, doign what kendrick did last year.
ive come to assume they wont get another starter by the deadline, but, i hope and demand an everyday outfielder who can hit (jason bay, etc), and a setup man whos legit.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:34 am
We’d have more than 4 guys with over 20 bangers…Feliz and Werth will be very close to having 20.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Its going to be an awesome few days i hope, defintely one of the most exciting times of year in sports. mad stuff goes down some years, and i hope this is one of those years, and i think ti will be.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:38 am
Saw the burnett statement but that is GM talk…a solid deal gets it done…can and would Bay play RF though?
July 29th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Just started reading this one..
But… if you were going to platoon Victorino, why wouldn’t you just trade him instead? He is proven as an above average outfielder, with a plus-arm, plus-speed, and he can hit #1, 2, 6, 7, or 8 in any lineup.. guys like that dont grow on trees.
I wonder what is up with Feliz’s back, and why do all 3rd basemen have bad backs??
I think you stick with the offense you have, and try to improve your pitching.. if your offense becomes the reason you miss the playoffs or something, then you know what you need to do in the offseason.. but with the guys out there, I dont think its worth it to get anyone but Bay or Ibanez.. and im thinking you would have to give up a lot to get either of them
July 29th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Becuase everytime I suggest trading victorino, EEEEEEEEEEVERYONE jumps all over me.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:43 am
bay would play RF. ill take jason bay and john grabow today and spend the rest of the time until thursday trying to improve the starting staff.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:43 am
and I personally don’t think Happ is going to be lights-out or anything when he comes up… he’s not a young guy anymore, and he’s not going to catch anyone by surprise. ALSO… KENDRICK sucks his last couple outings, I really hope he can turn it around
July 29th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Speed is something you can’t train. Victorino is one of the fastest guys in the league. He is also really erratic when he’s on the bases and it seems to fuck with pitchers. Victorino will only get better. Werth has the potential to be a 5 tool player. He has a great arm, has pop in his bat, is fast, is a good defensive player, and he lacks hitting for average. The only way that guy is going to learn to hit righties is by playing him against righties.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:45 am
Still need to pull the trigger on a starter…Cole Hammels has pitched a lot of innings so far ,will he hold up?…Blanton is not the answer …Get Burnett now,,I agree with Bull
July 29th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Don M…Kendrick gave up 1 run his last outing. Where were you?
July 29th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Happ, old? He’s 25. Hamels is 24.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:50 am
I rather not trade talent for Molina, a guy who’s OBP is the same as Ruiz’s. He grounds into far too many double plays and is overhyped by the media because of his brothers. Also, we’re not getting Burnett for the same reasons previous posters already made.
Bay and Grabow would be great addittions but for what price? I’m sure they would cost probably two of Marson, Carrasco, Victorino, Golson, or Donald because we would be getting Bay for so cheap (I think 7.5 million in 09)
However, it’s always fun to imagine
Rollins
Victorino/Werth
Utley
Howard
Burrell
Bay
Feliz
Ruiz/Coste
That’s the lineup I think Charlie would put out. I would put Pat in the 4 hole to mix the left/right matchups.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:51 am
i think they need victorino more than they need to trade him… i don’t know who they would get in return that would be such a major upgrade. I hear Bay’s name a lot, but can he steal bases, can he throw anyone out at any base… will he run over a catcher or beat jose reyes to 2b and break up a double play? I do think all of those elements need to be considered, mainly because he’s one of the few (if not the only one ) guys on the team who are doing those things right now and that’s what is winning the games they do win.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Guess I was thinking back more to his Marlins game and his D’backs game… just looked him over and still not that impressed by him
June 2nd – 5.1 Innings Pitched, 4 ER
June 18th – 3 IP, 6 ER
July 11th – 6.1 IP, 4 ER
July 19th – 4.1 IP, 7 ER
***With a couple of VERY, VERY good starts in between though.. but he isn’t steady enough to be anything over a #4 guy in a rotation..
My point on Happ was that most STUD pitchers tend to get called up in their early-20s… not their mid 20s… he turns 26 in October. I think he’s good, and did a nice job in his starts this year, but I don’t expect anything special from him
July 29th, 2008 at 11:54 am
I agree. Victorino has been the sparkplug this year.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:55 am
no way, bay and grabow??? look what the yankees gave up for equal or better return tahn bay/grabow. marson and carrasco wont be in taht deal and you can get it done without giving them up. the pirates have a younger shortstop than wilson in brian bixler so they dont need donald
bay
grabow
FOR
bastardo
OF prospect in A or AA
RP prospect in AA or AAA
SP Prospect in AA or A
IF prospect in AA or AAA
that would be an offhand, non-researched guess.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:56 am
woops, bastardo is the SP prspect in AA, nm
July 29th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Kendrick is a #5 starter with potential to be a #3.
July 29th, 2008 at 11:58 am
Yea Victorino is one of the few guys that could afford to trade, and get something soild in return… but I don’t think you should trade him because he means a lot to this lineup. and the defense.
Again, if he was slow like Rowand, and had to dive for balls to catch them… he would win gold gloves too…
July 29th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Why does everyone keep saying that we can give teams our shitty prospects and get All-Stars in return???
If you were the Pirates, would you trade Bay and Gabrow for junk????
July 29th, 2008 at 12:04 pm
they traded xavier nady and damaso marte for OVERRATED yankee prospects. maybe one of those guys will be awesome, maybe another one will be serviceable, im thinking of tabata and karstens. the other two are garabge throw-ins. ross ohlendorf, are you SERIOUS!!!!!!!!
even our prospects are better than that. thats excluding marson and carrasco. marson is NOT going anywhere, i can guarantee that.
July 29th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
5 bucks says the phils don’t get anyone new by the deadline
July 29th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
AND.. for everyone that mentions how dumb the Phillies are for not signing Rowand.
Rowand: .288 avg, 43 runs, 9 HR, 55 rbi, 2 Stolen Baes, 3 caught stealing
Victorino: .283 avg, 66 runs, 8 HR, 35 rbi, 25 Stolen Bases, 6 caught stealing
Both players have a .350 on-base-percentage.
Victorino has a higher fielding percentage at .995 to .989… only 1 errors to Rowands 3..but Rowand has more chances..
Victorino is younger and makes $410,000 ….Rowand makes $4 million this year, and $60 Million over the next 5 years.
Sounds like the Phillies were pretty smart in that decision.
July 29th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
We want Rowand for his leadership that he brings for the team. He’d also have 15 homers if not more in Philly. San Fran’s ball park is HUGE.
July 29th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
most of those guys were at least ranked in their top-10 prospects
and Nady is no Jason Bay either…
Here is our top-10 going into this season ranked by Baseball America:
TOP TEN
PROSPECTS
1. Carlos Carrasco, rhp
2. Adrian Cardenas, 2b
3. Joe Savery, lhp
4. Josh Outman, lhp
5. Kyle Drabek, rhp
6. Dominic Brown, of
7. Greg Golson, of
8. Lou Marson, c
9. Drew Carpenter, rhp
10. Jason Jaramillo, c
Only 3 of those guys ranked in the top 100, Carrasco was the highest at #54… Marson was #8, JUST this year moving ahead of Jaramillo… Donald isn’t on there, but some of you think he can take Rollins place with no problem…
July 29th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
Yeah, but now Golson isn’t even in our top 10 and Donald is in our top 5. Things change.
July 29th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
I can’t find a current one… I think Carpenter was hurt this year too, right? So he probably isn’t in the top-10 anymore either.
All im saying is that there needs to be a steady approach to the way fans look at prospects.. you can’t overvalue or undervalue them, because nobody knows.
Because Geoff thinks the Yankees prospects were overrated, doesn’t mean that the Pirates would want to give us Jason Bay for Bastardo (who came out of nowhere this year before getting injured) and a couple of crappy prospects..
I think we all agree that EVERYONE besides Carrasco and Marson should be available… BUT…. to get anything legit in Return (like this Pirates deal) you would surely have to give AT LEAST one of those guys up
July 29th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Gillick has expressed NO interest in Manny Ramirez and explains in a reported interview:
“At this point, there’s no interest on our part,” Gillick said in a phone interview. “We have no place to play the guy. Burrell has to play left field, and I don’t think RamÃrez has played right field in seven or eight years.”
Pat Burrell, the Philadelphia Phillies’ left fielder, is batting .277 with 26 home runs, 61 runs batted in, a .400 on-base percentage and a .585 slugging percentage. Burrell’s statistics are almost identical to those of RamÃrez, a left fielder who was hitting .302 with 19 homers, 65 RBI, a .400 on-base percentage and a .531 slugging percentage before Monday night’s game.
In addition, Burrell is not as divisive a personality as RamÃrez, who has infuriated Red Sox ownership with his latest antics.
Hopefully, this provides a reality check for baseball fantasy addicts. (chuckling)
July 29th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
Kendrick has had some shakey starts but Brandon Webb did poorly his first 2 years in the league also. I am not saying Kendrick is Webb but maybe Sinker Ballers take a little longer to develop???
The Phils need to look to unload Myers. I suggest a Myers and Ruiz to the Tigers for Pudge. Maybe phils throw in a low level prospect.
Next Year’s Starting Rotation
Cole
Moyer
Blanton
Kendrick
Happ/Eaton
Eaton is only on there because the Phillies are to cheap to cut him. Also for the guys who said Amaro Jr. Sucks. I absoluetly agree with you, I have no faith in the 2 knuckleheads taking over the GM post
July 29th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Donald on his way out?
Left-handed reliever Ron Mahay could be on the verge of heading to the Phillies.
According to clubs that have been speaking with the Royals, they’ve been having extensive conversations with the Phillies about a trade that would send Mahay to Philadelphia for shortstop prospect Jason Donald, a member of the U.S. Olympic baseball team.
It’s believed that as many as 10 teams have contacted the Royals about Mahay, who is signed for next year at $4 million. Most of them have come away with the impression that the Royals aren’t motivated to trade him. But in Donald, the Phillies have a commodity for which Kansas City has been searching aggressively. So the fit appears better with the Phillies than with any of the other teams on the Royals’ list.
