Hamels Outduels Jurrjens; Phils Sweep Braves Again
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, July 04, 2008 10:00 AM
Cole Hamels threw a career-high 125 pitches (82 strikes) and went 8.2 innings in a 4-1 victory over the Braves at Turner Field. It was the Phils’ second sweep of the Braves in Atlanta, pushing them now 2.5 games up on the National League East at 47-39.
Hamels struck out seven, walking two and giving up five hits. At one point he retired 11 straight hitters and after a leadoff single in the second inning, he didn’t let up a hit until the eighth. He was dominant, pure and simple.
The offense backed him well, scoring off Jair Jurrjens early. Chase Utley hit his 24th home run of the season in the first inning, then with Hamels rolling, Pedro Feliz singled home Pat Burrell, who doubled to lead off the fourth. Home runs by Ryan Howard (22) and Pedro Feliz (10) rounded out the Phils scoring.
A pretty confident win, overall. It was a little troubling to see the Phils get three runs off homers, then not be able to score Jimmy Rollins, who tripled to leadoff the third inning. The major doubt tonight was whether Hamels was in the game too long. Probably. The last thing the Phils need is Hamels to injure himself because of too many pitches in a pretty safe June game. They could’ve brought in RJ Swindle to see what he has to offer; instead, they’ll never know — Swindle was demoted back to AAA Lehigh Valley with JA Happ coming in to start Friday. It’s a bad move. Why not dump the practically useless So Taguchi and run with a shorter bench before the break?
Oh well, they did sweep the Braves. And that’s big enough.

Great win, good game to watch. But Charlie should’ve pulled him late in the eighth inning or at the start of the ninth. I know Hamels likely wanted to stay out there to go the distance, but that isn’t his decision, and we all know he has an injury history.
Whatever. I’m not complaining. Good to see Pete Happy step up and deliver with three hits and a couple RBIs, while providing his usual stellar D.
I find it amazing that, with a leadoff guy on third, Vic, Utley and K-How couldn’t collectively hit a fly ball.
I think the Braves are done. If I’m their GM, I’m selling over the next few weeks. Smoltz and Glavine may (possibly should) retire. Hampton is — and always has been — filler for the 60-day DL. Some of their young players are nice (McCann, some of those pitchers), but if I’m the Braves front office, I’m dumping salary to rebuild and come back in like 2010 or 2011. Makes one wonder if Tim Hudson would be available … (not that they’d trade him to a division rival, but still …)

Hudson isn’t going anywhere if they blow that team up. He’ll be their veteran pitching staff ace.

After seeing Ryan Howard have two errors on Wednesday night (that nearly cost us the game), I started to thinking. How come Manuel is willing to pinch run Burrell late in games and not Howard? Isn’t Howard as slow? Is Howard’s bat more valuable? Doesn’t Pat get on base more? If they take Pat out to put in a fielder that “should” be better defensively, why not do the same for Howard. If Ryan is the last at bat in the seventh, why not put Bruntlett in for him at first. I think Eric would do a better job and likely make less errors.
What do you guys think?

I hope that J.A. Happ does better this year than last in his start with the Phils against the Mets. Myers needs to right his own ship because the phightins will need him towards the post season.
The Phillies did the reversal move last night in Atlanta. They swept the Braves prior to their slump so, sweeping them again allowed them to reverse the voodoo . . . I think I seen So Taguchi filling in for the bat boy yesterday in Atlanta.

The more I look at it, Burrell’s replacement is less about defense and more about protecting him from further injury. If it was all about defense then Howard would probably come out before Pat.

PED one of the reasons why Pat the Bat gets taken out and not Howard is because they need someone that can cover ground in the outfield. I also doubt that they want to have 2 defensive replacements. They need to keep those bats on the bench just in case. That also puts a huge void in your line up if something happens and you have to go into extra innings. Would you really want Bruntlett and So Taguchi batting 4th and 5th if something happened? I know I wouldn’t. Also, Howard IS faster than Burrell. Howard isn’t fast, but he’s fast for his size, and he is faster than Burrell. Last but not least, Howard is a former MVP. It would be a low blow to his pride, which is retarded but that’s the way it is.

Nah Chris L. Burrell has no injury history. That guy is in tip top shape, especially for a chain smoking drunk.
July 4th, 2008 at 11:42 am
Anyone in New York tonight and wanna watch the game somewhere? (I’ll ask this later, too.)
July 4th, 2008 at 11:46 am
haha. tip top shape for a chain smoking drunk. i love it. i always laugh when he has to bust it on the basepaths afterwards he always looks like he’s huffin and puffin and needs a smoke.

I’m told that the Phils are close to acquiring Bronson Arroyo and pehaps corey patterson for Victorino and a minor leaguer position player (not cardenas).
I really don’t like this trade too much, but I’m hoping it’s just a rumor.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Mike, please tekk ne you are joking. If this team aquires Patterson I’m gonna vomit. Were it not for Dusty Baker the kid wouldn’t even have a job in baseball. He’s terrible.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:06 pm
jeez, i can’t even bother to check my spelling when thinking of Patterson in a Phils jersey. ugh. just awful.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
Mike M…that has to be a lie. I wouldn’t give the Reds Victorino for Arroyo, Patterson, and Freel.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
That’s a blatant lie in every sense of the word. No way they would make that deal.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
K-How … best nickname ever
July 4th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
Hey Tim, can you make an entry about why Pat Burrell should be an allstar and how he’s having the best year out of any outfielder in the NL leading with most homers, slugging, OPS, and fielding perecentage. He’s 2nd in assists and OBP. If Clint Hurdle doesn’t pick Pat the Bat then I’ll be really pissed off.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I really hope that rumor is a bad joke. Now Victorino and two prospects for Harang, Freel, and Bray (a good LH reliever) I would do. I doubt the Reds would do that deal though.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Um, Victorino and 2 prospects for Harang is a good deal.
July 4th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
There is a rumor floating about that the Reds and Phillies are working on a Bronson Arroyo for Shane Victorino swap. However, the Cincinnati Enquirer ran the report by a Reds official who said there’s nothing to it. Many thanks to Reds beat writer John Fay, who keeps a blog here.

phew. shane for arroyo? ill give like a shitty prospect for arroyo. shane has more value than that. if shane is in a trade to the reds itd be more like shane, donald, other prospect for harang. nobody wants arroyo after he gave up 10 runs in one inning
July 4th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
The Phillies won and you’re complaining about the Ace not being used like an Ace?

Looks like the Brewcrew is probably getting Sabathia.
July 4th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
theyre taking a huge risk, but it look slike theyd rather take the draft picks when he leaves. good thing i have tickets to that series after all i guess.
July 4th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
Brewers will have a great 1-2-3 punch if that happens, probably the best in baseball. Their farm is so deep that they don’t care probably. They’ll also have 5 of the top 35 draft picks next year when Sheets and Sabathia walk.
July 4th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Ill bet they let both of them walk. they can recover from that in like 2 years with those draft picks, their farm system, and their core. the phillies dont have such a luxury so getting sabathia is foolish.
July 4th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Heh, some commenter at MLBTR wrote this:
“on an unrelated note i work for the reds and we have a closed circuit feed for fox sports net and they were running graphics for Pat Burrell with Reds logos. i dont know if they do that normally or what but just an interesting note.”
Uh …
July 4th, 2008 at 5:19 pm
it doesnt make sense to trade burrell in the middle of a run. ill take the draft picks for him instead. unless of course, trading pat purrell brings you back edinson volquez and jay bruce.
