Happy Independence Day

Posted by Brian Michael, Fri, July 04, 2008 04:29 AM

Baseball and America are inextricably linked, we all know that, but sometimes it takes a moment like this to really grasp the significance.

When two hippies ran on to the field at Dodger Stadium, looking to burn an American flag, Cubs OF Rick Monday swooped in and saved the day.

    Yessss!!!
Thanks for posting. I’d never heard of that incident.

  2. Mike T. Says:

How do you know they were hippies?

  3. scot Says:

Awesome, Brian. Thank you for posting that.

  4. BigDaddy Says:

    Brian,

A GREAT WAY TO START THE 4TH, NOW FOR THE FOOD, AND A SWEEP OF THE METS.

  5. scot Says:

bigdaddy, you forgot to mention the beer. but i’ll raise one to you (and all phils fans) anyway.

    happy 4th everyone!!!

  6. jeff Says:

this guy is pretty proud of himself… really quite a risk he’s taking there grabbing the flag that isnt on fire. glad he could give us a little breakdown of his thoughts there… douche

  7. Brooks Says:

How can we tell they are hippies?
Obviously you were not around during that era. Flag desicration was big at the time, it was before Ronald Regan brought pride back to the forefront of American philosophy. It was also during the Jimmy Carter reign as president, after Watergate and the Sprio Agnew debacle –
Not good times – What Rick Monday did was uplifting and gut wrenching all in one swoop.

  8. rob Says:

    Jeff,

    Exactly. Thank you.

If that flag ignited like a Christmas tree, and burned a slow burn while the two culprits dance around it and high fived…

there might not be an America today.

    Rick Monday…American Hero.

  9. scot Says:

If what the flag burners were doing is merely an expression of free speech, fine. But, Rick Monday’s acts and his choice to speak about why he did what he did afterwards is also free speech. More power too him.

    Jack English… American Hero

  11. Phil Says:

    hahahaha that rules Pat.

  12. NEPA Says:

Hahaha, love that video Pat. “They knighted Elton John and he’s about the biggest homo in the world” and “Call them American Glory Cakes” were the best, but the whole thing had me dyin laughin.

  13. ryan Says:

awesome video. never heard of that incident before. although i really wish he would grabbed the flag and then beat the shit outta them afterwards because clearly they deserved an ass beating.

as far as the crowd singing god bless america afterwards, that’s a bit much.

  14. Matt Kwasiborski Says:

Yeah, well it was done on our 200th bicentiennal birthday, not on any normal day at least that is what the video says. I think this might be why there was an outpouring of American sentiment.

And republican Gerald Ford was in office then, not Carter. Carter was elected that November and we were able to rid ourselves of lying crooks who inhabited the White House. Sounds eerily similar to the past eight years.

  15. PROBABLY A BAD IDEA BY THE GUYS THAT RUN THIS WEBSITE Says:

Let’s bring up politics on a phillies website at a time when half of America completely disagrees with the other half on every major issue. Maybe tommorrow we will touch on which religion is “right”.

  16. TJ Says:

Good stuff, this was years before my time but I’ve never heard of it. Happy Fourth and let’s beat the mets.

  17. Gavin Says:

Baseball is America. Cool video. I was two.

Happy 4th!!! Can’t wait to see what the gamenight beer is tonight.

I think it is 100% appropriate to show this even if we disagree on the direction of our country.

    Go Phils!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Mr Met Says:

    Nice post. Thanks

  19. Geoff Says:

baseball still is the pasttime and still represents america to a better extent than the nfl. college football has some purity left, but the nfl is just plain smut…

i couldnt get tix this year but ive been to plenty of july 4 games. theres no better day to see a baseball game than july 4, not even close

  20. Nosoupforyou Says:

Listen to jeff sitting safely there in mommies basement eating his parents food while surfing the net and enlightens us all by calling someone who had the guts to get involved a douche. It’s blatantly obvious who the douche bag is here jeffy, you mindless Little puke.

  21. Geoff Says:

you must obviously not be talking to me, because none of that dribble means anything at all. the american flag is the wrong symbol to attack anyway. the government is evil, not the people. the flag represents the people and their history and sacrifices. the people are responsible for taking control of the direction of their government. in that regard, they have been grossly negligent. the only way to solve these problems is to become the government again and get people in there
    who arent evil.

in all honesty there, chief, im actually most likely more active than you are. you probably dont even know who runs the government you drooling mentally retarded babboon.

if you werent talking to me then disregard that.

to everyone else. HUGE game tonight, ill be in the ciy tonight watching the game before hitting the town. enjoy the night everyone!

  22. PROBABLY A BAD IDEA BY THE GUYS THAT RUN THIS WEBSITE Says:

Dear nosoupforyou: Ronald Reagan ruined America. Think about that while you are dancing in your underwear listening to Toby Keith’s latest album.

  23. Paul Says:

Whoa Geoff calm down…he was obviously talking to the other Jeff.

I don’t know why people are trying to create this into a political thing. Rick Monday did what any other American should do by trying to preserve a national symbol. Regardless of what your political beliefs are, everyone should be proud that Rick was able to successfully do what I hope the rest of you would also attempt to do.

  24. Throwbacks Says:

Stumbled on your site quite by accident, I’m glad I did. I’m always on the lookout for a new football resource and your site really fit the bill :)

    thanks,
    Denise

  25. metheadfred Says:

“Ronald Reagan ruined America”…what? ask Carter about he sat on his ass while Americans were held hostage buttcrack boy…and I suppose you think Obama gonna save us….you’ll be running Omama!!!….ya must have missed the history classes…I learned awhile back never ask a Philly person or someone from south jersey anything about numbers or history…or directions ….Ronald Reagan ruined America…ha yeah right!

  26. Georgie Says:

Yeah, Ronald Reagan, American hero, thanks for:

    #1. Iran Contra
    #2. Initiated deregulation
#3. Decline of the middle class through trickle-down economics
#4. Supported Saddam Hussein’s regime and supplied them with chemical weapons which were used on the Iranians and Kurds.
#5. Financial and military support to forces which eventually became the Taliban.
#6. Inflated military spending which led to a huge national defecit.

    Assets:

#1. Defeated Communism (which was already on its way out).

That’s it for now, yep, Reagan was awesome!

  27. Geoff Says:

Since JFK, EVERY SINGLE President we have had – including the current one – has been a total, complete liar and shill for the private offshore banks (aka Federal Reserve, IMF/World Bank) that openly run the federal government. Every president has done terrible things like that, including this one. Im sorry, but does anyone actually believe those people are out for our best interests or that of the country? Come on now…a study was just released indicating that most politicians have the same personality traits as serial killers (brazen liars, sociopaths, split personality, etc).

  28. metheadfred Says:

Georgie watching too much msnbc…..one of 7 Obama stations…. the one sided news outlets…its all good Georgie…I would agree with Geoff….lets get back to baseball..America’s pastime….
