Myers Goes Into Seventh In A+ Game

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, July 19, 2008 01:24 PM

Brett Myers finished his three-game adventure through the Phillies farm system, pitching an unspectacular but necessary game against the A+ Brevard County Manatees.

The line: 6.2 IP, 2 ER, 6 K, BB

According to Jim Cawley of Florida Today, Myers said he’s ready to rejoin the Phillies starting rotation.

“I feel ready – especially today. I was locating my fastball more than I have been in the past. We’ll see what happens. Hopefully, I can do it on Wednesday.”

Myers threw a lot of fastballs – about 70 percent, and he said he now feels pretty confident in his fastball.

“Minor leagues usually are very good fastball hitting leagues – all the way up from A-ball to Triple A, and that’s why I wanted to come down, to prove that I could throw my fastball and get people out and not rely on my offspeed stuff.”

Of course, this is A+ ball hitting we’re talking about, not Jose Reyes, David Wright, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado, who he’ll face in his first start with the Phils Wednesday. Via text message, Cawley wrote Myers showed no character on the mound, seemingly all business. A far cry from the “fun” Myers was trying to reclaim in Allentown.

Hopefully the fun is over and Myers is ready to win games for his team. He said he wants to win 10. We’ll see.

10, what’s he at 3? If he comes back and wins 7 games for us then there is a god and he was shining down on Brett Myers. If Myers comes back and puts up 100 strike outs 7 wins 3.50 ERA or under in the 2nd half then he’s the #2 we needed him to be.

  2. NJ Says:

There’s two really important elements there, 70% fastballs and ‘no character’. If Myers comes back ready and focused the skies the limit here, it’s his head and in-ability to adapt on the mound that de-railed his season so maybe he’s done what he needed to do to become a ‘pitcher’ again.

  3. Phil Says:

NJ I 100% agree. I think that Lidge signing was the saving grace. After that happened he said to himself, do I want to start for the Phillies the team I love or go close somewhere else? I think he chose the former.

  4. Chris C. Says:

How tight a leash do you keep him on? How many bad starts until he is removed from the rotation again? Honestly, I think that with the race as tight as it is, if he bombs in two consecutive starts and shows no change from when he was sent down, he must go to the pen. No team can consistantly get crushed every fifth day and expect to contend. If he cannot start, send him to the pen and bring up Happ. Enough fucking around. This team claims to be a second half team, well prove it.

  5. NJ Says:

I think because of his brieft time in the pen he forgot how much starting pitching was a game of cat and mouse, his struggles may be the defining point in his career where he channels his emotion into veteran presence on the mound to become a seudo-Schilling.

  6. Phil Says:

Give him 3 starts. He deserves it. Make it kind of like best out of 3. If he implodes in 1 and pitches brilliantly in 2 then keep him, if he implodes in 2 and pitches brilliantly in 1 get him out of here. If he pitches decent in all 3 then make him the 5th starter.

  7. Pete Says:

Sure, but when he implodes in the first two just don’t give him the third start as a courtesy…ship him to the pen.

  8. Phil Says:

Absolutely Pete. Best 2 out of 3.

  9. Gavin Says:

Who gets sent down when he returns? Condrey? Thats a friggin joke. Condrey doesnt deserve to get sent out b/c Eaton sucks. If that happens then Gillick and Co. care more about the money invested then they do in winning.

  10. Gavin Says:

To further my point. Eaton has been one of the slowest startes in the game. How is that going to translate to the pen when he has 7 minutes to warm up and then pitch one or two innings.

I want to hear Gillicks rationale for why they didnt release him. I want to see how they spin it of if they’ll admit its about money not about performance. Damn I’m pissed.
