Odds And Ends: No Burnett; Fuentes; Futures
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, July 13, 2008 10:49 AM
In Ken Rosenthal’s latest Full Count video (via MLBTradeRumors), the FOXSports insider says the Phillies are not an option for Blue Jays starter AJ Burnett.
Evidently the Phils are among the teams on Burnett’s no-trade clause, and the Phils have little interest in him.
- Staying with trade talk, the Phils are reportedly talking to the Rockies about reliever Brian Fuentes.
Sam Carchidi says the Rockies are asking for either Carlos Carrasco or Lou Marson, but as we know, the Phils won’t give them up. Currently reliever Tom Gordon is on the disabled list, and sent-up LOOGY RJ Swindle has a 7.71 ERA in three appearances.
- Phuture Phillies has a Futures Game discussion page going today.
Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson, Greg Golson and Jason Donald are scheduled to play in the game today in the Bronx. The game is at 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the trade deadline will pass with the Phils not making any big moves….?
July 13th, 2008 at 10:56 am
I think it’s going to go either way. Either we’re not going to do anything, or we’re going to make an incredible trade out of left field that we weren’t expecting. I’m going with the former.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:10 am
If we trade Carrasco for a relief pitcher, I will be extremely pissed off and call for Gillick’s head. Though he wouldn’t give him up for Sabathia so I have faith in the franchise on that. I can see us now tradiing him to some team only to have him emerge as the new Josh Beckett (who the scouts seem to love comparing him to). I was alright with trading him for Sabathia and making it the all-in move in a go for it year. I’m not for trading him for B-list talent and sure as hell not for trading him for a relief pitcher. If it’s a set up guy were so desperate for, I think Madson is just as good of a candidate as anyone.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:20 am
I think a move will be made for a starter but it’s looking likely it’ll be one coming straight out of leftfield unless the Bedard deal goes down, trade rumors for Burnett grown far past his value. Fuentes is going to be an expenisve proposition as we’ll be in a bidding war and our most sensible move here is to move Myers or Eaton to the pen and increase Madson and Durbin’s responsibilities.
Whatever the FO does, it has to be done aggressively. The more doubt surrounding moves. the more this team is going to be stuck in a status quo.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:27 am
They should just grab Bedard now while he’s on the DL and before it seems like Gillick is desperate. Donald, Bastrado, and another 1 or 2 lesser players could get it done.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:56 am
I didnt think you were allowed to trade people while they were on the DL.
in any event, theyre not going to trade the untouchable guys for briant fuentes, who will leave as a free agent for the yankees iin the winter anyway. The rockies want two top prospects for him because theyre trying to improve over the draft picks theyd get fo rletting him walk. It would be the worst trade in Phillies history to trade either of those guys for someone like that.
July 13th, 2008 at 11:59 am
I wonder how available Bedard actually is, he’s on the DL retroactively to free up a roster spot beween his last and next start. The Mariners want something of value back and they like Carrasco but thankfully looks like he’s staying put. Unfortunately the words out on Gillick being desperate and rumors of his future suggest there’s a conflict of interest dealing with Seattle.
It’s just a damn shame Lowe went off the Market.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
This is what I hate about “TRADE RUMORS” sites and stuff…. The Phillies and Blue Jays have had scouts at each others games… does this mean that the BJays don’t think Donald is good enough to play SS ??
I hope they don’t give up the farm for Fuentes, cause isn’t he a free agent after this season? If you could get him for this year and next year, its a good move though.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
They needed to make an early move like the one for Harden.
Now from here on out the price tag will go way up for someof these players that have 15 teams interested in them. Even the injured Freddy Garcia will get a decent deal from someone. The pricetag for Fuentes will be way too high by the time he gets moved.
Burnett is not worth what Ive been hearing the tag is for him.
THe problem is there will be an open slot that they need to fill. Happ will replace Eaton but Myers doesnt look trustworthy so theres an empty slot there.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Maybe theyre just trying to lower Burnetts price by saying they arent interested. I dunno. Thats a guy you should be able to get cheap. If he didnt have the career numbers he has he would be on the B list too. But hes way overvalued now.
Maybe Id better take another look at the B list, which is a scary thought.
July 13th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
I think Burnett sucks.. i did back before he signed that deal and I think so even more now that he’s never developed any more… is he better than what we have, Yes…but not at a high cost..
Alright, Im gonna go watch myself some Futures game.. and then hope taht Webb keeps his suspect-pitching going. cause he hasn’t looked too sharp lately
July 13th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
no way is gillick trading carrasco or marson for that chode fuentes.
July 13th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
You cant trade players on the DL. Also the phils will do nothing. I have no problem with them keeping the prospects. If anything unload eaton or myers if you can
July 13th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
If we have to give up Marson or Carrasco for Fuentes, forget him then…He’s not worth giving up those prospects for.
July 13th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Burnett sucks
July 13th, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Whatever, thats like when you find out that some chick thinks you are below her standard, and she’s totally beat anyway.
