   So this guy has amazing K/walk numbers, but without the help of dominating stuff.

   Coupled with his lefty 3 quarters delivery, this dude is similar to Sid Fernandez.

   Phil I know you hate Condrey but he does have a 3.50 ERA since middle of April and for the last bullpen option that is pretty good, compared to what we used to have with mesa, hernandez, rhodes and god awful mike williams, oh and turk wendell and dennis cook, i feel like i could name 80 people here

   Condreys really improved over the course of the year untill he was caught in the Myers debacle last week. Condrey’s not going to be anything more than a mop-up guy and this way if its short-term as the Phils will aggresively court a set-up guy like Fuentes Swindle could really give Charlie what he’s wanted all year in that second lefty that’s not named Steve Kline.

   Really interested to see how this guy works out, apart from the Braves the rest of the division can be free swinging bats which this guy could be murder on.

    Ok so, as i let out a sigh of relief, it appears that still either happ or carrascro will take myers’ place in the rotation.

    condrey is still out, then fine, swindle can come in and see what hes got. plus, i really want to see what a 52mph major league curveball looks like

    condrey goes, though theyll need someone slse to eat innings out of the pen (ryan madson). condrey is a 32 year old mop up guy who battle his whole career to make a big league roster. sort of costian, but chris coste is an impact hitter. condrey can catch on somewhere else or be kept for organizational depth. someone else might grab him if the phillis send him to to AAA because hed have to clear waivers.

    You need a fifth outfielder, not taguchi, because jenkins is the fourth outfielder and hes completely worthless

    YES! Taguchi is the Most Worthless player right now on this team, replacing him, with almost anyone, is an upgrade.

    Condrey has done a pretty good job this year in his role… he is a mop-up guy who eats innings when they are up big, or down big… Obviously he is the least exciting pitcher on the team, but is he even worth talking about replacing??

    Ryan Madson has been throwing a lot lately, and has been doing VERY well in my opinion… Im wondering if he might be getting an audition for some other teams since the Phillies have Durbin, Romero, Gordon (who I hate) and Lidge… Madson seems like he could be a trade piece.

    If Swindle stays, then the odd man out has to be a pitcher. Say what you will about Taguchi, but there’s no way the Phils go with 4 outfielders (even if Dobbs and/or Bruntlett can be used there in a pinch).

    Tim: the Brandon Watson shout is a good one. I know he’s not on the 40-man, but I somehow doubt that anyone’s claiming T.J. Bohn if we DFA him. If Taguchi goes and Snelling still isn’t healthy, then Watson should certainly be the one to replace him.

    I think you need condrey to be able to actually pitch in games that matter, otherwise its a wasted roster spot. also, how can so taguchi still be on this team? its totally amazing. he comtributes absolutely nothing at all to the team.

    Every team needs at least one guy that can go pitch when you are either definitely going to win..or lose that game. That is what Condrey is on the team for.. otherwise you could be winning 12-2 and using Madson, Durbin, etc…. then the next night its a 3-2 ballgame, and they are tired from the night before.

    In an ideal world, we would have an all-star at every position, including every bullpen spot.. but there are way more important issues to this team than complaining about the bench and minor-role guys..

    Jenkins hasn’t been very good, but if he’s the 4th outfielder on your team, you really don’t have too much to worry about.

    Bruntlet and Dobbs can be your 5th OF. Screw Taguci.

    Unfortunately they would never do that b/c then your bench is shortened to basically 3 guys b/c you dont wnat to PH your back up C, so Taguci stays and Condrey is trade bait…….could use him in a SP deal?

    Hey you guys see that Sabathia is the top priority trade wise for the phils according to Todd Zolecki? I dont like it unless they ink him to a long term deal before the trade.

    Yea I don’t think he holds much value, but he’ll be one of those journeymen relievers that sticks around the majors for 10+ years.. teams aren’t going to give up much for him, but when his time with the Phillies is done, Im sure he’ll get another job in the bigs.

    I read before the Indians were not willing to give any team a “window” to sign Sabathia to a long-term deal… and that Sabathia wants to hit the free-agent market…

    Who does everyone want at this point? Harang is having an awful year, not just record, but his ERA is way up…. Bedard is a whackjob, Sabathia would be a rental, you’d have to give up EVERYTHING for Harden… any thoughts?

    Lets just say…….we gave up Condrey-Cardenas-Savery to Indians for Sabqthia…I’d be ok with it. I know that the Indians wouldnt do that deal, but I wouldnt offer more than that. Period.

    Harden-Harang-Bedard you have to throw in Carrasco.

    I like a Bedard deal. If this was February and the Phils had a chance to get Bedard we’d be offering the farm.

    Maybe thats what you have to do I dont know. I dont know if there is a frontline pitcher that works thats not a rental or a d-bag that you can get. They didnt do enough in the offseason like we said.

    The indians will hang up the phone if you even mention clay condrey. Teams will pick up condrye, maybe, if you DFA him but noone actually wants him in a trade. he has no value, just a throw in if you can even get someone to accept it.

    The Indians will get and want 4 A prospects for sabathia. not 2. the phillies should not get CC. repeat, NOT. hes not resigning and theyd give up their future for a few months of a guy that chokes in the playoffs anyway. The phillies will need those prospects, or most of them, as we said yesterday.

    Also, their lineup is not good enough to beat the Angels, A’s or Red Sox starting pitching. we saw that.

    haha.. he’s not garbage… but he’s not worth talking this much about either… he’s thrown 33 Innings this year… he’s really a non-issue. He has a minor-role on this team, and he does an alright job at his role. He has no trade value. But if he was a out there for the taking, another team would grab him without a doubt because everyone needs arms in their bullpen..

    Condrey is decent in mop-up and better 12th man than many bullpens have. However if there is a better arm, specifically a lefty since the bullpen needs two left-handed pitchers, he should be sent down to AAA. I think that Swindle will do well in the majors and take Condrey’s place. Condrey will probably pass waivers and then be sent to AAA in case we need him again.

    I would rather see Snelling (if he’s not injured), Brandon Watson, Jason Donald, Jeremy Slayden, Greg Golson, or even some other AA or AAA outfielders not named TJ Bohn than have So Taguchi waste anymore time on the 25 man roster. It’s time to DFA Taguchi.

    As for Geoff Jenkins, he really isn’t that bad. He is no longer a MLB starting RF, but his offense and defense and fine in a platoon with Werth. Jenkins numbers from April and May were quite good. He struggled in June, but so did most of the team offensively. As the team gets out of the hitting slump he will as well. He isn’t much more than the lefty in a platoon and an extra lefty on the bench when Werth starts, but he isn’t worth getting rid of, at least not yet.

    Hopefully the Phillies will bring up Happ for the spot in the rotation. I would be okay with Carrasco although I don’t think he is quite ready yet. I just hope they don’t go with Durbin/Madson, the bullpen needs both of them, especially with Gordon apparently not able to pitch as much.

    Here are your candidates… Durbin, Happ, Carrasco, Swindle (unlikely)

    Happ is my least favorite… low ceiling. If they do bring up Happ, I think that they’ll use him in the ‘pen.

    Durbin is probably the front runner… he has been in the majors and he has seen and had success against major league hitters so a couple of losses probably won’t hurt him. He’s strong enough to get you five or six good innings a night but it will hurt their bullpen.

    Carrasco is the phillies top prospect but he struggled in April (AA) with his command. He’s been better in June but he’s a high risk guy… high reward, too. He has the best stuff and the most potential but they don’t want to kill his confidence so I could understand if they didn’t go with him. Regardless, they need to get him major league ready by the end of the season… they’ve been really babying him.

    Swindle is a bit of enigma… 1.94 ERA in 18 games with the Iron Pigs (AAA) and his KK/B ratio was a remarkable 48/6 this year but he doesn’t have a fastball and could get hit around in the majors. I think that the most likely scenario is Durbin heading into the rotation and Swindle taking his position in the bullpen. They said that Swindle is there to replace Condrey (who is at home for the birth of his first child and will rejoin the team on Thursday) but I think he’ll stay there for a while.

    Another name being thrown around is Burnett… assuming that we can’t sign Sabathia long term (I would be fine taking him as a rental but I’m probably in the minority), and we don’t want to give up the farm for Harden (and I’m not the least bit excited about Harang and Bedard), I’m wondering what it would take to land Burnett… thoughts?

    I wouldn’t mind Burnett, but he has been hit hard this year. Plus he would only be a rental, but he does have an option. How about Myers and a prospect to the Jays for Burnett? Both guys could use the change of scenery.

    I would have rather Harang than Burnett, but I’d rather have Burnett than Bedard or Harden because of their injury risks. I would like Sabathia, but I doubt the Phillies will be able to pull that one off.

    I don’t think Burnett makes this team that much better. I’d rather stick with what we have in prospects and hope they turn out decent, instead of trade a lot for Burnett and clear out the farm for an overrated pitcher

    if burnett pitches well this season, hell opt out and be a rental

    if he is average or worse, hell stay and youll be on the hook for 15mm next year for an average pticher.

    im not touching burnett.

    um, if you give up the farm for sabathia knowing he isnt going to stay, then the phillies DESERVE to be a bad team for like 5 years, which they will be if they do that. i guarantee it.

    Im actually now saying. dont clear the farm for ANYONE! they cant afford to. they need marson and golson and those guy sto be players on the roster next year.

    if you can package myers with a few B prospects that we can afford to lose then im ok with thtat

    Right.. and eventhough Gillick will get bashed for it.. its the right move. Instead of going all-out this year, why not try to keep the team competative for the next few years, and maybe one of them will work out for you!

    They’ll add a middle of the road starter… give up some combination of Jason Donald and Pitcher.. and that will be alright.

    I think im almost ready to see Golson over Burrell, unless Pat takes a real paycut to stay here. Marson will be a nice addition, and Carrasco has been on our minds for so long, don’t we really want to see what he has instead of trading him for Burnett, or Harang ??

    I wouldn’t be willing to part with Carrasco but they have been really keeping him close to the teet… at some point, he has to show some progress or someone has to be held accountable (why isn’t he moving forward). Golson won’t start for another year…

    Burnett hasn’t been awful this year (108 k’s). I would rather rent Sabathia but it’s going to cost you a lot more with no hope of any future benefit. If you take away a few terrible outings, Burnett has been alright. In 8 of his last 10 starts, he has given up 3 ER or less. He needs to improve his WHIP but he can get himself out of a jam because he strikes guys out. I wouldn’t mind Burnett if we can keep Carrasco and Golson (they can have Donald and Benson… would have to think about Myers).

    I basically alreayd think theyre not good enough to win the world series NOR will they be if they get burnett or bedard.

    wwhat they need to do is make sure hamels and lidge are here long term and get rid of the old useless overpaid junk on the roster (jenkins makes 5 mm per year!!!!!)

    i number 3 starter is reasonable i suppose. Id rather keep the young prospect core in tact and make a run at it next year. this team isnt good enough to beat the angels or the red sox in the playoffs.

    if you urinate away all your top prospects for 2 months of sabathia, th ephillies will be a last place team in 21010 instead of contending for a WS in 2010

    Blowing off steam. Not blow up the team now. I say next year they select a core group of like 8-10 current guys on the roster and blow everyone else out of there. bring up young prospects and judiciously fill the other spots.

    im tired of them being a borderline contender/pretender team. just make a decision to either rebuild or go all out.

    remember how the flyers under clark were always a borderline contender/pretender team except in 1997?

    well finally it caught up with them and they bottomned out but the GM holmgren smartly made the decision to rebuild in one offseason basically. they turned it around compeltely.

    If Swindle pitches well tonight (I can’t see them not using him) do they keep him and DL Gordon when Condrey comes back? I know it’s a stretch but it gives them another lefty and still have a starter - one of the minor leaguers Durbin and Madson have defined roles and last time Madson bounced from rotation to pen it didnt work out well.

    In terms of the OF, Golson, etc. need everyday playing time to prepare for either (1) Werth or Vic being traded (2) showing enough to become tradable or (3) know what the team has for next season. I’m not a fan of Taguchi but it makes no sense to bring in one of the future stars to sit on the bench if they could be playing everyday in AA or AAA. Now someone like Bohn I have no problem booting So for (but are they gaining anything by doing that and they still have to pay So)

    My whole thing is that you are paying people regardless of their production… so if you would be better with TJ BOHN over Taguchi.. then make that move… Manuel is loyal to his guys though and until/unless Taguchi starts hurting the team, I cant see them making that move

    I don’t see why they don’t bring up Jason Jaramillo. He’s a switch hitter which is a plus and anything right now is better than Ruiz. Does anyone know whats going on with Greg Golson? He was a first round pick and plays the outfield. It sounds like he has potential but last I heard he was hitting under .250 in AA. I’m just trying to find replacements for Taguchi and Jenkins because they both suck.

    TC…Golson is hitting close to .300. He’s like Pedro Cerano though and can only hit fast balls and he strikes out a lot. He strikes out like Howard does and walks less, so it’s pretty bad. You don’t want to just bring him up and let him sit on the bench and replace Taguchi. You want him to stay in the minors and develop so he can be a good player some day.

    Earlier notes talked about bringing up Brandon Watson. I don’t agree. The last thing we need is another slow moving outfielder with no pop.

    Here’s a thought … Greg Golson. Somehow we get this kid enough ABs to show that he can be Burrell’s replacement. I know Pat’s having a good year ( just like he did his last contract grabbing year). Golson may be the only outfielder in the farm system with enough experience to show all 5 tools and actually be Pat’s replacement.

    Oh and lets stand pat with the pitching. If we can fix Myers (don’t thinkso … he’s a never has/never will be … head case and needs to go) he can contribute this year.

    Again, bring up Golson (no offense So) get him some playing time the next time Pat’s bat goes flat (in about a week and a half). Just imagine wheels in the 7 hole in front of Coste (take a seat Carlos). Golson, Golson, Golson!

    Stop talking about bringing up Golson. Do you want him to ride the bench like So? Let him stay in the minors and develop his game instead of sitting on the bench in the majors and never getting a chance to play which won’t make him better. I don’t want to replace Burrell if we don’t have to. If you can get Burrell for cheap and under 5 years than do it.

    Amen Phil…. If Golson is excelling at the plate at the AA level, what makes anyone think that he is ready to start playing everyday in the big leagues. I think, to a degree, they wasted Micheal Bourn that way.. instead of giving him regular at-bats in the minors, they brought him up to be a pinch-runner … now he can’t hit for sh!t.. but we got Lidge for him, so it worked out for us
