Phils Barrage Braves, Hold On
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, July 27, 2008 11:00 PM
Joe Blanton spotted the Braves two runs in the first inning, then the rains came. After a nice delay, Adam Eaton spotted the Braves another three runs. Then the bats came alive.
The Phillies won 12-10, thanks to a slew of home runs. They murdered Braves’ pitching throughout the day, holding on late despite cruising in the middle innings.
Shane Victorino provided the big bangs. He tied the game with a three-run homer, then scored a run later by barreling into Brian McCann. The Braves catcher left the game but X-rays were negative. Vic went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs.
Homers also came from Chris Coste, Jayson Werth, Pat Burrell and Jimmy Rollins. Let it be known the offense was the story in this game, single-handedly giving the Phils the win on a wacky, soaked Sunday.
The win went to Clay Condrey, who pitched two fine innings in relief of Blanton (2 IP, 2 ER) and Eaton (2 IP, 3 ER). The latter received a lot of jeers during and after his outing. It’s likely Eaton might be heading to AAA Lehigh Valley, or elsewhere, after this one.
Rudy Seanez and Ryan Madson helped provide a scare with a five-run eighth for the Braves, but the Phils saw their way out and Brad Lidge collected his 24th save in as many chances. The Phils took the series, 2-1, and remain one game in back of the Mets for first place in the NL East.

We’ve now won two straight games with W’s going to Eaton and Condrey, I guess anything is possible.

I wish the “Trade Victorino” chants would cease! This guy, NOT ROLLINS, is the part that makes this engine run! He is the only one that plays with heart on this entire team!!

Victorino is Bush League and the Braves should have plunked his midget ass

It is so painful watching Eaton limp through every inning he pitches. It will be such a relief to see him located anywhere else but on the Phillies roster.
And as for vic, he’s the sparkplug on this team. He does so many things for this squad that doesnt always show up in the box score. If he is dealt his speed, defensive presence, arm strength, and patented drag bunt will be sorely missed.

That would be good for the Phillies if they call Happ up and give the kid a chance in the rotation. It worked for the Yankees in Chamberlain.

I was at the game, and we gave Mccann an ovation as he walked off… the funny thing was i turned to my girlfriend and said… “You know, if he held on to that ball… he would be getting absolutely NO ovation right now”
All in all it was a great game to watch, had great 8th row seats behind homeplate too!

Oh and yes… Happ needs a chance. What’s the worst that can happen… he gives up 10 runs…. oh wait.. that happened today.
yea I think it’s time.

Bowling over the catcher is part of the game. He would have been out and knocked the ball out and was safe. It turned out to be a pretty big run. Nothing mailicious, the head-to-head contact came because McCann was off-balance from fielding the short hop. Nothing bush league about it, and the Braves showed that by not plunking him. I’m sure that Victorino and the rest of the Phillies hope that McCann is OK and doesn’t miss any time.

Happ should not be traded. To many teams give up thier fan system to try to win now and most of the time it does not work out. Most high market teams like the Yankees, Mets, Phillies, ect. trade these young prospects for average players or high paid players and it works out most of the time for the small market teams. You can trade a Happ and other prospects for guys like Holliday which you really don’t need. You need a starter. Then a couple of years later Happ might become an all-star and Holliday is not on your team anymore becuase you lost him to free agency because you maximized your budget and then you regret trading Happ in the first place. Then when your former prospects who become really good players with the small market team you traded them to that team trades that player for more young prospects. Just ask Minn. who got Liriano & Nathan from the Giants, Florida got Hanley Ramirez from Boston for Beckett and Lowell (former Yankee prospect).

Metsfan: I totally agree. Another reason Happ should not be traded is that even if he isn’t an all-star, he can probably be a Moyer/Kendrick type pitcher who keeps us in games and usually pitches 6 or 7 innings. Why pay a guy like Adam Eaton $8 million to do that when you can get better quality a lot cheaper?
I hope that Myers goes to the bullpen, Eaton gets cut, Happ goes to the rotation, and we get a lefty reliever (DFA Seanez or Condrey to make room). I would also like a bat if possible, preferably one that can play some 3B since Feliz is injured, although I don’t think its seriously.
July 28th, 2008 at 1:23 am
Casey Blake is a good player that can play 1B, 3B & OF.

I’m starting to be swayed by the “don’t trade Vic” crowd. Jimmy is a primadonna asshole this year, and Vic has definitely stepped up to provide the heart and spark that are otherwise missing. Every time I turn around, he’s helping the team win or he’s the only guy who is hitting.
He’ll never be MVP (or maybe never even an all-star), but it’s hard to deny what he’s doing this year.
If we gotta trade somebody to get a marquee player, I’m with Geoff. Trade Rollins. His attitude wore thin on me weeks ago.

Believe it or not, ive backed off of victorino. hes shown he has more heart than rollins does. for that reason he can hang around for a stretch run. they still need an everyday right fielder though.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:18 am
It’s about time you’ve backed off of Victorino. haha Now when will you be backing off of Moyer?
July 28th, 2008 at 9:20 am
The Phillies and Braves don’t really have much bad-blood between them.. they play hard and Victorino’s was a clean play..
I said last week.. he took Randy Johnson and Johan Santana yard.. he seems to step-up in big games and really plays solid defense. If he crashed into walls, he’d get the same props that Rowand got, but he has played a very good CF this year..
July 28th, 2008 at 9:21 am
When he throws a CG shutout or when he retires. hes been doing well this year. if i back off of him hell fall apart. victorino actually shows heart and tries, unlike jimmy rollins who now wont talk to anybody and still cant lay off the first pitch.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:23 am
Don’s right. Vic was the only guy who showed up to hit against the Big Unit in that Arizona game (you know, the game where Eaton … on second thought, why relive all that).
July 28th, 2008 at 9:24 am
We would be horrible if it wasn’t for Moyer’s brilliant season. He’s been showing up and pitching brilliantly in big games for us. When they pulled him in the 7th the other night he was at a 70 pitch count. He was well on his way to a complete game, but they needed the offense. Moyer and Victorino have really stepped up in our time of need during this season.
July 28th, 2008 at 9:24 am
This is now the EXTREME shift where Geoff starts to love and praise Victorino…
Moyer has been solid… what about Kendrick ??? his ERA is climbing.. now closer to 5.00 then it is to 4.00 … Happ has been solid all year, dominant at AAA and pretty damn good in his starts for the Phillies.. and Im glad they are going to give him a chance.
In the Daily News today they have all kinds of breakdowns.. I think they said the Phillies are 14-20 in day games this year… that is crappy
July 28th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Our starting pitchers are 32-34 this year.. that aint good.
We need some help.. they had the Phillies scouting the Mariners in Toronto this week, looking at Miguel Batista and Raul Ibanez ….
July 28th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Don M, w/l has nothing to do with pitchers. It has to do with a team. How many of those 32-34 losses came from the Phillies offense not bring their bats to the ballpark?
July 28th, 2008 at 9:34 am
miguel batista won 16 games last year, but i wouldnt touch him this year. we dont need another old bastard in here. raul ibanez is a class act though and honestly, i think hed really improve this locker room and provide leadership.
dude, youre getting annoying when you point out something i already acknowledged. i already said im changing my status designation of victorino from “must immediately trade” to “is allowed to stay for the stretch run and well go from there”
jimmy rollins is in the “must immediately trade column,” so is brett myers. joe blanton just got here so its not worth the effort to complain about him because hes not going anywhere until his contract runs out.
geoff jenkins, rudy seanez, adam eaton, carlos ruiz are all in the “must immediately cut” category. taguchi is actually not as bad as he appears if you give him playing time. if youre going to give him decent playing time then keep him, becuase he gets rusty fast, otherwise he can go.
utley is in the “if hes hurt then stop f’ing around and put him on the DL” category.
if i ever see cole hamels give up that many runs, errors or not, in one inning then hes going to get it too.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:07 am
I’m definitely the most annoying person when it comes to pointing something out.. no arguement there.
Phil… i’d say its about a 50/50 split that the loses come from
A. Not bringing the bats to the ballpark. and
B. a couple starting pitchers not getting out of the 4th inning but giving up 6+ ER
Stats can say anything you want them too, but from a guy that has been on the positive side with this team all year, THAT is a tough one to spin that your team is above .500, but your starting pitchers aren’t …. I would be AMAZED if they could carry that into the playoffs, cause I doubt any team ever has.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Im definitely amped up about happ coming back. i just hope its into the rotation.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Geoff… wtf..
Jimmy Rollins is in the “must immediately trade column” ???
Ruiz has actually been playing pretty well since the All-Star break. The only two guys that I think don’t help this team are Seanez and Taguchi… but they are probably the two most limited-roles on the roster anyway, so its not that big a deal
July 28th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Once again wins/losses IS a team stat. Cole Hamels could go 0-20 with a 1.94 ERA. That would mean he didn’t lose 20 games, his offense couldn’t score runs. Once again w/l is a team stat.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:14 am
I understand and agree… I’ve said many, many times that the most telling pitching stat is his ERA.
BUT… a number of the Phillies loses this year are because Brett Myers, Adam Eaton, Kyle Kendrick have been ROCKED early in the game and didn’t make it out of the 4th inning..
a number of those loses are 2-0, 3-1 etc where Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer have pitched amazing, and the offense didn’t show up… Hamels SHOULD have about 15 wins right now
July 28th, 2008 at 10:17 am
Hamels should be like 15-4 right now and Moyer should be 13-6.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:21 am
Right.. and obviously that can work both ways… and guy that gives up the lead.. if his team re-takes the lead and he is still on record.. he can get the win.
its not a very telling stat.. I think quality starts.. which revolve around ERA is a good stat… but my point was that a team whose starting pitchers are 32-34 has a tough road ahead of them.. I would be interested to see if any team has made the playoffs whose starting pitchers were below .500….. or what the worst W-L was for a starting rotation of a team that made the playoffs.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Blantons gotta get his act together. they brought him in here because the starters cant make it through 7 innings (except hamels and once with kendrick/moyer) and he needs to provide 7 innings for them routinely.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Look at our bullpens record though.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:31 am
For starting pitchers, ive become obsessed with WHIP and ERA. im big on innings too, but i try and focus on efficiency. especially with whip in relation to pitch count. how many pitches does it take to get through 7 innings for this guy as opposed to that guy, etc.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Geoff we don’t know what Blanton would have ended up pitching last night, he very well could have put up a further 6 scoreless innings. The bats need to stay alive so that he can pitch the 7th of 8th in a close game rather than being pulled for a pinch hitter.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:36 am
Yes I know that. Im giving him the benefit of the doubt. Im just saying we really really really need him to be efficient if theyre not going to get another starter.
July 28th, 2008 at 10:43 am
I’m worried we’re going to misuse him and wish we’d started him behind Myers as the 3 giving the pen some rest before facing the back-end of the rotation. He’s going to give up hits a few walks and runs but will eat up innings if the games close.
July 29th, 2008 at 4:56 am
Imagine, if hopefully the Phillies win the NL East and go to the next level, we will all look back on this Atlanta series and say that the Phillie’s season, this close to oblivion, turned on it!
