Report: Gillick Will Make Another Move

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, July 24, 2008 10:35 AM

The Wilmington News Journal’s Phillies blog yesterday has Pat Gillick saying it’s very possible the Phils will make another move before the trade deadline next week.

Spoke to Pat Gillick before yesterday’s game, and he said it’s a “good possibility” that the Phils will make another trade before the July 31 deadline. He said pitching remains the priority, although he’s pursuing a bat, too. The Pirates may be dangling outfielder Xavier Nady and lefty reliever Damaso Marte. What would you give up for them?

To address the players mentioned lately, the Phils shouldn’t go after Xavier Nady. It’s mainly because of his high price at the moment. Are the Phils better off giving up Carlos Carrasco and Shane Victorino for Nady, a lifetime .281/.336/.455 hitter? He’s having a career year thus far, but has never been completely healthy. Too high an asking price.

Matt Kemp, on the other hand, a lifetime .302/.344/.480 at 24? While he’s much more of an unknown quotient, I’d be more inclined to give up value for him.

Of the left-handed relievers out there, John Grabow sounds like the cheapest and looks effective enough to handle being a LOOGY. Damaso Marte could cost the Phils Carrasco. According to MLB Trade Rumors, Gillick seems to value Lou Marson more than his top pitching prospect.

  1. Phil Says:

Roy Halladay is apparently unhappy in Toronto and has let management know it, and management has apparently responded by doing some quiet surveying of teams (such as St. Louis and the Dodgers) that are far, far away from the AL East in an effort to see what it could get for the 2003 Cy Young Award winner.

I called it!!! That’s from MLBTR

  2. philsphan Says:

I don’t see why the Dodgers would trade Kemp, but if he is available, the Phillies should try to get him.

I agree that the Phillies should try to get Grabow instead of Marte (he will be cheaper/easier to get although not quite as good). I still think they need another bat, but I don’t really know who they could realistically get and who they would have to give up.

I still think the Phillies should move Myers to the bullpen and let Happ be in the starting rotation. But if any team wants to trade for Myers I would do it.

  3. Mike Says:

Would you trade Happ if you could get a decent bat and relief pitcher for him ? everyone give your opionions on this idea please

  4. philsphan Says:

I wouldn’t trade Happ since he is the insurance if Myers becomes totally ineffective or if a starter goes down. Happ could also replace Moyer next year, or Myers he they can manage to trade him in the off season.

I would consider trading Carrasco depending on who the player is and if its more than a 2 month rental.

  5. Geoff Says:

I think they should be looking for a setup man instead of a loogy. gordon wont throw off a mount for at least another week. thats not good at all. they need a setup man, and a good one at that.

i dont see holliday being moved at all the more i think about it. id be surprised at least.

philsphan, youre right, why would the dodgers trade a 23 year old major league level outfielder with A list potential? that would be completely retarded. plus, juan pierre and andruw jones suck this year. so i dont see why theyd trade matt kemp at all.

  6. Geoff Says:

I put happ over carrasco and being a keeper. i lvoe carrascos stuff but he isnt performing well. we saw happ and we know what he can do. i dont think he should be traded at all. too valuable.

  7. Bart Says:

After Myers preformance last night I think they are still looking for another starter and a bat. I wouldn’t be surprise at all if AJ Burnett still found his way here

I agree that Happ should be in the rotation right now instead of Myers and I believe that will happen after his next start. If he can get command of his fastball then make him the 8th inning guy in place of Gordon (who is done IMO). Go out and get another lefty for the pen like Marte or Gabow for some prospects and let’s see where that takes them. Happ is far ahead of Carrasco right now and could be a better major league pitcher. I want to hold onto Vic and I believe the offense will get going.

  13. Geoff Says:

Yes, Phil! I just saw that. that would be awesome. I didnt think theyd actually consider it but despite their pitching move with blanton, pat gillick is REQUIRED BY INTERNATIONAL LAW to do everything in his power to get halladay. id give him victorino, carrasco and someone else like donald or myers.

pull out all the stops. toronto likes golson, give them golson. marson is still untouchable though, and gillick has said as much.

emergency change of plans: halladay is the priority i dont care what it takes. no JA Happ, no lou marson, but everyone else can go. id even offer them jimmy rollins, seriously.

  14. Pete Says:

I would trade anyone for Halladay. Marson, Carrasco, it doesn’t matter. The guy is a bona fide ace, under contract for 2 years below market, with no significant injury history. Marson + Carrasco + Donald + Savery? Done. Marson + Carrasco + Happ + Donald? Done. Trade them the entire roster of the Reading Phillies if you have to…they’re instant contenders for the next three years with Halladay on board

  15. Geoff Says:

id get jimmy rollins out of this clubouse PRONTO. hes become a complete asshiole.

  16. J-Man Says:

We need another pitcher…Blanton was probably Gillicks worst trade,Myers still sucks, and Eaton well he’s still himself.

  17. Yinger Says:

We need another starter, but I feel like Victorino is the guy that people are gonna want for another prime time pitcher. It’s a tough call….
