   I don’t hate this trade. If the offense can produce like they have the past few games and like we know they can, this bullpen can really shut ‘em down.

   I’m actually a big fan of this trade. I just wish we could trade Rollins away somehow and keep Donald.

   they need an everyday right fielder before the offense is complete. i need a nother body out there who you can trust.

   id feel better about this trade if donald wasnt in it, but if they do that then whatever. jsut dont screw up.

   Come on, Phil. Let’s trade an MVP and proven top player so we can hold onto a 23-year-old who will could pan out to be comprable to Rich Aurilia. I’ll have more on this soon, once it breaks.

   Rollins could land you an ace or at least a really solid #2 guy. Rollins is a team cancer this year.

   A 37 year old relief pitcher who’s owed 4 million next year for a pretty solid infield prospect. Sounds like a Phillies deadline move.

   But Donald is NOT ready to contribute to a pennant-contending club. Not even close. And Bruntlett filling in for the remainder of the year won’t suffice.

    Donald is a fresh draft pick and he’s at least 2 to 3 years away from the majors AND he would have to play out of position (jkenn)… I absolutely love this trade. The phillies are instantly better and sacrificed a prayer.

    lets stop with the trade rollins talk. Its not gonna happen, and for good reason. He’s done some stupid things this year, but hes the reigning MVP and still probably in the top 3 shortstops in the NL.

    Love the Mahay move. Having only Romero from the left side is probably the bullpen’s only weakness. Donald is probably a solid major leaguer, but not close to better than Rollins.

    Gillick pushes in some chips in his last year…

    I agree with Mutley. I think this trade could work out very well for the phils. Rollins is not going to be traded so Donald is not going to get to the phillies for a while.

    Phil, honestly, when have you ever heard of trading All-Star players for All-Star players? The math and common sense just doesn’t add up. You pay for an ace in FA. You trade prospects for an ace towards the end of a contract. Rarely do you ever see trading top position players for top pitching.

    Rob – You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. That’s what I hate about this site, nobody is really in tune with the farm system on this board. Donald is destined to be here in 2010, and could be here in mid-09 if he hits well in AAA next year.

    Horrible, horrible trade.

    This would be an awesome trade for the Phillies. The time for us to win is now, while guys like Burrell and Howard are still under contract. Donald won’t be in the majors for years, and Mahay is having a really good year. Who cares how old he is, he can clearly pitch (1.81 era in 54 innings, 7th best in mlb among guys with more then 40 innings). Lets just hope they do a physical.

    Donald is ready now or at the very least by 09. That guy is going to be a stud. Don’t trade a stud for a 37 year old relief pitcher. We already gave up a stud for Blanton. Come on now…

    I’ve seen a lot of talk on here lately about having to make moves to win NOW, and that’s what this move screams. Donald is a solid prospect but he’s blocked by the reigning MVP and won’t see the bigs for a long, long time. With Mahay, we solidify the bullpen and give Romero some much needed rest. This guy has an ERA of 1.81 and a WHIP of 1.19, those are pretty ridiculous numbers. I love the move, trading a MAYBE of the future for a DEFINITE (or as close as they come for a reliever) of the present, let’s win now.

    matt, donald is blocked. not pulling the trigger on this kind of deal is the sort of thing that leads to a team finishing 3 games out of the playoffs every year.

    Matt — why are you planning for something that might happen in 2010? Who knows what this team looks like in 2010? I think this team wins it all this or next year or they start from scratch. You can’t keep f’ing around with Howard or Hamels before one of them wants out of here. This team likely won’t be contenders in 2010. Who our starting SS will be in 2010 is of little concern for a team in a pennant race in 2008.

    Why would this team start from scratch if they didn’t win this year. Do you guys really think a situational lefty is going to get through the Cubs or Brewers this year?

    I agree this move would help us get to the playoffs. I’m telling you, I’ve seen Donald play a lot this year, and watched Utley play in the minors, and this guy has a lot of the same characteristics. An IF of Howard, Utley, Rollins, and Donald would be awesome in late 2009 / early 2010.

    If he was part of a piece of the puzzle to get us a legitimate SP like Holliday, or someone else, I’d be more open to it. I’m just not willing to trade a future starting 3B (I’m not sure why nobody can really get that through their head, he’s not roadblocked), for a LOOG.

    Truth is, Donald was coming up in September and would be ready for a 25-man roster by Opening Day 2009. Problem is he doesn’t exactly have 3B range and is much more apt as a shortstop or second baseman. He’s blocked. They would’ve had to trade Donald, and now is a good time considering his value is high (almost ready to contribute, Olympic player).

    Matt – In general a lot of Phils fans don’t know much about the farm system. That’s OK. But it’s good to have some knowledge.

    Pull the plug on this trade and do it Gillick…I don’t mind trading Donald it’s not like he’s going to see the majors because J-Roll is blocking him from coming up and J-Rolls not going anywhere anytime soon.

    Matt, I respect your argument but I never said they would be starting from scratch. I said that this team is going to look different and in 2010. We *might* not even be in it in 2010 so how would that “stud” third baseman help us then. Sure, we very well *might* be in it in two years but the truth is we ARE in it right now, a lefty out of the bullpen is one of our weaknesses, so we might as well make a push for it.

    We’re likely losing one of our best hitters at the end of this year. We likely won’t have Howard in 2010. You might be very right, but it does us little good now.

    How does trading a 23 year old for a 37 year old not fall under the “mortgaging the future” category? Whether or not we project a minor league player to have his path to the big leagues blocked, it’s still a risky move. I’m not a fan of this proposed deal, and in 95% of the moves Gillick has made during his tenure. The key players on this team are still the players that Fast Eddie left him.

    If this trade does not go down. This could potentially open the door for a Howard trade in the winter, and moving Utley to first, then Donald to 2nd.

    Unfortuantely the Phils are still stuck with Eaton and Jenkins next year. At least Myers could be a little easier to move.

    The point that people tend to be making on here is this, “It’s fine to trade these players away for so-so returns because their position is ‘blocked’ within our system by guys like Utley and Rollins.”

    Value has nothing to do with the Phillies’ needs. Just because we aren’t in need of a player at a given position doesn’t diminish his value unless there are 29 other teams who also don’t have a need at that position (never).

    A near-majors-ready player at any position is a valued quantity and shouldn’t be traded away hastily. I’m not saying Mahay isn’t worth it b/c I’m not intimately familiar with him and his numbers do look good.

    I just disagree with the reasoning and justification some folks are using for it.

    Cardenas has value, but the other two guys didnt. even outman, reliever prospects are strange anyway. their either ready to come up like imediately or they get bounced around.

    The Phillies have been DESPERATE for a legit 3b prospect for a few years.. they thought they had one in Costanzo.. he got traded.. obviously they knew that Donald wasn’t moving up at SS.. If he was going to one day play 3b, wouldn’t they have been playing him there this year??

    Tim… the past week, I keep getting shut out of here for lengths of time with that WORDPRESS ERROR or whatever it is.. any idea what thats about or why that happens?

    seriously, is the only argument against mahay his age? looking at his stats, i don’t give a damn if the guy is 60 years old. if he matches comes close to matching those numbers for the Phils this year (and next, as he’s under contract) this is a very good and necessary trade for the phils.

    scot.. its just people getting carried away and not being able to look past the fact that the guys we traded recently weren’t coming up the major league level anytime soon because they had All-Stars and MVPs in their positions, AND.. they can’t see that the recent pitching additions, while not BLOCKBUSTER enough for some fans, do in fact make this team better without mortgaging the future.
